PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Well another couple of months has passed and what a hectic time we have had with droughts, bushfires and floods. As what Dorothy Mackellar once said, “I hope everyone survived with not too much damage” Once again, we have been having good turnouts to our runs especially on Australia Day. I believe a number of members went to the Berrima Rally even though the weather was not promising. We should hear about it at the next meeting. I hope everyone had a good time at our place on the 23rd. It was great turnout with a number of cars on display. Warren Brown brought his Bean racer which he hopes to drive from London to Sydney later this year. My neighbour Brian Ferguson brought his Morris J van which used to belong to his father’s bakery in Goulburn and Don Young (Rolls Man) bought his 2004 Chrysler Crossfire which is all Mercedes gear. A very smart sports car. I also had my newly acquired 1977 Triumph Stag that I have bought from a close friend (anyone want to buy a Jag). You would have received an email in regards to added amendments to the Bi-laws to be voted on at our February meet. See you all at the next meeting or on the road. Ivan Petrie

Psalm 23 The “Ford” is my car, I shall not want another; It maketh me to lie down in wet places, it soureth my soul; It leadeth me into deep waters; It leadeth me into the paths of ridicule for its name sake; It prepareth breakdowns for me in the presence of mine enemies; Yea, though I run down the valley I’m towed up the hills; I fear much evil when it is with me; Its rod and its engine discomfort me; It anointeth my face with oil, its tank runneth over; Verily, if the thing followeth me all the days of my life, I shall dwell in the “House of the Insane forever”. (The Ford is such a popular car and has so good a reputation that its manufacturers give a warm welcome to skits)

FROM THE EDITOR

Welcome to our March edition of the Broken Spoke, isn’t it great to see and breathe clean air again. Hopefully, we will see more useful rain continue. Late January we found ourselves down in Unanderra watching our grandson playing for NSW in the Under 15 Australian Indoor Hockey Championships, which they won. Early one morning we had some spare time and called into the Australian Motorlife Museum at Dapto. Being early we were the first in and the friendly staff spent some time with us walking around their fabulous exhibition. I was also taken into their large workshop behind the exhibition area to see several of their restorations underway by members. What a workshop and setup they have for this work. Needless to say, we took lots of photos, several below. We would thoroughly recommend a visit to the museum for those members who haven’t been yet. I have a shed story this issue, Ivan took me up to Warren Brown’s for a look. He sure is an interesting character with an impressive background. It would be great to see a good rollup for the Mogo Zoo run on 5 April. The Zoo has just reopened after the fires. There was a great story on its survival in the Sydney Morning Herald last weekend. They would welcome our support. Cheers Paul Jones

A MAN AND HIS SHED

WARREN BROWN

Ivan was good enough to run me out to Warren Brown’s property on the Middle Arm Road recently to look into his sheds. Warren has owned this property for about seven years and has constructed a large shed to house his unusual collection of vehicles and motoring memorabilia. Most members would be aware of his 1925 Bean 14hp Sports Special. This is a replica of the Australian adventurer Francis Birtles’ Bean made famous by being the first man to drive a car from England to Australia in 1927. The original Bean is now located in the National Museum of Australia in Canberra.

Looking around his large shed Warren has a passion for military history. I counted four jeeps, different models in various stages of restoration. One, a 1942 Willy’s Jeep, an SAS replica won an Australian award in 2002, and is fully equipped as they were for desert warfare, fuel and water tanks, camouflage, helmets, tools only missing its mounted machine gun. An interesting feature was the sundial mounted on the dashboard to assist in navigation in the desert due to the interference to normal magnetic compasses in the area. Warren also has a 1943 M3A1 White Scout Reconnaissance vehicle, a brute of a thing that weighs 5 tonnes. The body is ¼ “steel plate and it took some effort to lift the engine cover for a peek. It also has a continuous skate rail around the open roof line which apparently carried three machine guns. The large roller on the front helps it transverse out of ditches. Another unusual vehicle and a favourite of Warren’s is his 6x6 Blitz truck. This was formally an aircraft refuelling truck in the islands before being converted to a troop carrier.

Page 8: VETERAN & VINTAGE CAR CLUB of GOULBURN Inc · OFFICE BEARERS 2019-20 Committee: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and Editor Position Name Phone Mobile Email President

8

Warren also has an interest in fire engines, some of his earliest memories relate to an old Dennis truck on the Central Coast. He now owns two, one is a 1928 fully equipped unit he acquired from Condobolin and was used in one of Kevin Rudd’s election campaigns.

Page 9: VETERAN & VINTAGE CAR CLUB of GOULBURN Inc · OFFICE BEARERS 2019-20 Committee: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and Editor Position Name Phone Mobile Email President

9

In the shed is the usual collection of motoring items I find in many sheds, all with a personal story. He has done a nice job with an old Taralga shopfront which now contains many car products and signage. We then poked our head into his workshop, a separate double garage with a 1978 Series 3 Land Rover restoration well underway. The shed also housed the second 1933 Dennis fire engine stripped down which he claimed didn’t need too much work to complete. I think Brian H would be at home in this garage, I’m sure Warren knew where all the parts and tools were, perhaps.

Thanks Warren, for inviting us over for a cuppa and cakes. I’m sure some of our members would enjoy a look-see in the future.

CLUB RUNS

Afternoon Tea Run to Richard Dillon’s Sunday 5 January On a very smoky afternoon nine members in five cars headed out to Richard Dillon’s property for afternoon tea. Due to the smoke we were invited inside his house for a cuppa and cakes. Brian & Helen brought out two budgies for Richard and there was some amusement with attempts to transfer them into their new cage. The men then had a wander through Richard’s sheds, a pity to see his Hupmobile with the motor on the floor in parts. Just as well he has a new shed as his collection of stationery engines has grown since our last visit. Richard is also accumulating other motoring items and is storing a 1929 Chev sedan for Brad.

Thanks, Richard, for your hospitality on the afternoon. Members were Kev & Bev (Kombi), Brian & Helen (Chev), Ivan & Sandra (Jag), Doug, Paul & Sharon (modern).

Mid-week Run – Charcoal Chicken Thursday 16 January For the lunch run Noel chauffeured by Bruce & Kathy, took 13 members on a country tour out on the Middle Arm Road, turning onto the Norwood Road across to Kingsdale and back into town on the Crookwell Road, ending up at the Charcoal Chicken in Auburn Street. Paul & Sharon joined them for a very pleasant lunch. We also had the company of Kev & Bev’s grandsons.

Australia Day – Victoria Park Sunday 26 January Goulburn’s annual Australia Day celebrations were held back in Victoria Park this year. Our club had its usual position overlooking a lot of the stalls, entertainment etc.

It was a typical hot summer day with everyone seeking a shady spot to sit, talk and have lunch. Once again, the club’s gazebos were very handy and thank you to Richard for bringing them along and then going home to get his motorcycle for the display. David is building a Quad cycle, that is at the chassis stage and he parked it alongside Tom’s completed vehicle. It gave people an idea of how we go about restoring or starting from scratch to build a vehicle.

Berrima District Historic Car Club Rally Saturday 15 - Sunday 16 February With an early start from Victoria Park seven members in four cars headed off to Mittagong for the 44th Berrima Rally, where we were joined by Doug & Anna, and Doug G. Vehicles assembled in year categories on the Mittagong Public School oval. There were 128 entrants in the rally and probably another 30 vehicles on show on Saturday. It took some time to move around all the vehicles. Overall winner of the display was a magnificent 1935 Studebaker Commander 8 boat tail roadster.

After a BBQ and salad lunch in the school hall we went on the afternoon run (68kms) through Colo Vale, Hilltop, Balmoral and Buxton to Bargo. We passed through the recent fire ravaged areas and saw many destroyed homes. At Bargo we visited a lovely private garden and museum before heading back to Mittagong for the rally dinner.

Page 14: VETERAN & VINTAGE CAR CLUB of GOULBURN Inc · OFFICE BEARERS 2019-20 Committee: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and Editor Position Name Phone Mobile Email President

14

The dinner was a Heroes & Heroines, Villains & Vagabonds theme with some very interesting costumes. They also had an Elvis impersonator (a local real estate agent) who entertained the crowd. On Sunday morning we took part in the second run (54kms) up Mount Gibraltar and down into Bowral, out past Wingecarribee Reservoir through the Kangaloon and Glenquarry areas before heading back to Mittagong for lunch prior to heading home. Well done to the Berrima club who did a great job of organising the rally and to their members who provided all catering.

Members attending were Tony & Yvonne (Vauxhall), Paul & Sharon (Merc), Garry & Helen (Pacer), Graham (MG Magnette), Kev & Bev, Doug & Anna and Doug in moderns. BBQ Ivan & Sandra’s Sunday 23 February On February 23, members travelled to Ivan and Sandra’s home at Middle Arm. Once we managed to find the correct gate, we drove past 3 very full dams before reaching their home. We set up our tables and chairs under the large tree and settled down for the day. The view down the valley is always impressive but after all the rain it is now a lush green with lots of full dams, a view we all commented on. As we were having lunch another member arrived, Warren in his Bean and a neighbour Brian in his

Morris J van and it was nice that they could join us for a while. After lunch, Peter borrowed a fishing line from Ivan and caught a fish much to his delight and then returned it to the dam.

It was a nice relaxing day and enjoyed by all present: Graham (Magnette), Peter and Kathy (Holden), Brian and Helen (Chev), Warren (Bean), Brian (Morris J Van), Bruce and Kathy (Chev) and those in their moderns were Doug, Tom, Norma, Yvonne and Tony, Bev and Kevin, Kel and Doreen. Ivan and Sandra also had the MGY and his new car a Triumph Spitfire on show and his friends, Don and Sandy with their Chrysler Crossfire.

Joke of the Issue

THE LAST KISS ~~~~

Back on August 9th, a group of HELL'S ANGELS, South Carolina bikers were riding east on #378 when they saw a girl about to jump off the Pee Dee River Bridge. So they stopped. Jimmy their leader, a big burly man of 53, gets off his Harley, walks through a group of gawkers, past the State Trooper who was trying to talk her down off the railing, and says , "Hey Baby . . . whatcha doin' up there on that railin'? She says tearfully, "I'm going to commit suicide! While he didn't want to appear "sensitive," Jimmy also didn't want to miss this "be-a-legend" opportunity either so he asked, "Well, before you jump, Babe . . . why don't you give ol' Jimmy here your best last kiss?" So, with no hesitation at all, she leaned back over the railing and did just that . . . and it was a long, deep, lingering kiss followed immediately by another even better one. After they breathlessly finished, Jimmy gets a big thumbs-up approval from his biker-buddies, the onlookers, and even the State Trooper, and then says, "Wow! That was the best kiss I have ever had! That's a real talent you're wasting there, Sugar Shorts…You could be famous if you rode with me…Why are you committing suicide?" "My parents don't like me dressing up like a girl." It's still unclear whether she jumped or was pushed. --
