Mikulec also of Lodge 24, who passed away in 2013. This is a letter written to Lillian in approximately 1986 by the late Emma (Bartos) Fojtik of Lodge 81, Needville. In 1921, we got married with a small reception and left on our honey- moon the day after Christmas. The fol- lowing October, we were blessed with a sweet little boy. Three years later, an- other little boy came. I was deter- mined to give them all I was denied in my childhood. Eight years drifted by, and the work got me down. I became sick with heart trouble. The doctor or- dered rest which was not my style, but by then, Edmond started school. My husband never did any housework be- fore so there was nothing to do, but slow down and limit my work and take rest often which brought me com- plete recovery. We moved to Damon in 1931, and on Thanksgiving Day, Calvin came down with diptheria. He spent a week in the hospital and was a very sick baby. When we brought him in, the doctor pronounced him gone, but I pleaded with him to give him a chance. The doctor turned to me and said will you pay for it if it fails? What made me say I would, only you whom has had such a decision to make could understand, for we were poor as a church mouse. Well, the little darling suffered terribly, but survived and fi- nally the day came to take him home. I told the doctor, “See, you would have let him die and he made it!” He said, “But he won’t be right. He will suffer consequences due to the seriousness of his illness.” I took the blame on my- self for begging the doctor to perform the operation and got sick. As days went by, he began to notice when we spoke. I asked him if he loved me as his answer had always been, “I love you a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck.” His big, blue eyes seemed to speak, but no voice came out. Finally, one day he squealed out “peck” then and there I knew he would talk, but it took some time. He never gained for one year although it had no effect on his health. He is doing fine at 60. Another year drifted by with more rugged road ahead. In the time of the depression, on one Saturday morning on August 13, 1932, sultry heat began followed by sharp, gusty wind and rain. The blustering weather looked very stormy. The clouds chased one after another from east to west from the Gulf of Mexico. We did finish the first bale of cotton, and he took it to the gin. During the afternoon, I washed the clothes and cleaned the house as the next day we would cele- brate my 30th birthday. Louis came in from the gin and said a radio message came in that a tropical hurricane was due at 7 p.m. giving us only an hour to Remember . . .We are among you. Continued on Page 15.

Peace is not Freedomby Sharron Connelly

SPJST Lodge 154, Fort WorthIn 1994, I became aware of the dif-

ference between peace and freedom. Iwas privileged to take part in a SokolSlet (exhibition) in Prague in theCzech Republic. Sokol (meaning “fal-con”), an international gymnastic or-ganization, originated there in 1862,based on the Greek Olympics withcompetitions and exhibitions. Itteaches mental discipline throughphysical discipline and stands for thedemocratic rights of the individual.Due to their philosophy, the organiza-tion was taken over by the Germansduring World War II, and their leaderswere either killed or imprisoned. After the fall of Hitler, they were leftto the mercy of the Russian occupa-tion. Finally, they had peace, but it wasat the business end of Russian ma-chine guns and pistols. A 10 o’clockcurfew was issued. If you were foundoutside after that time, you would beshot!

As we approached the city by bus,we could see the remains of war.Looking out the window, I could seeCzech men driving Russian trucks inthe fields with men behind them walk-ing with hand plows digging up the

fields. Abandoned military equipmentwas utilized to start a new life.

Our event began with a mammothparade down the streets of Prague.People lined the streets, and manywere hanging out windows wearingold Sokol uniforms or any remnants ofones they had saved. The band wasloud and patriotic. Teams from manycountries including our past enemies,Russia and Germany, all wearingSokol gymnastic uniforms marchedbehind color guards carrying flags rep-resenting their countries. Electricityfilled the air. Our Sokol president,Jerry Milan, gave us small American

flags to hand out to the crowd. Oldwomen would run up and take one andplace it to their heart crying. Theyreached out to touch us Americans be-cause they knew our country had de-livered them from Communism.Along with the crowd, we weremarching and bawling.

The next day, we wandered thestreets of Prague and I came upon ahuge wall - about 120 feet long - witha mural painted on it. It had an oval inthe center with the remains of a per-son’s face and words written thelength of the building. When I re-turned to the hotel, I visited the gift

shop to buy some postcards and sawone of the murals in its original state. It was a portrait of John Lennon withwords of his peace song. The shop-keeper explained the story: Threeyoung college students decided to riseup against the Communists. They de-fied the curfew, snuck out, and paintedthe mural on the wall. The next daythey were found and shot dead in frontof the image of Lennon and their bod-ies left to rot as a warning not toprotest against the Communist occu-pation. The wall became a symbol ofpeace to the people of Prague, andpieces of it were chinked off as pre-

cious souvenirs. I returned to the sceneand found a piece on the ground, which I have along with the postcardas a reminder to know the differencebetween peace and freedom and howlucky we are to have both because oursoldiers fought and died for it.

After the fall of Communism, theSokol organization finally had theirgyms and stadiums returned. The firstday we rode the bus to the stadium topractice. The people on the bus wereengulfed in a programmed dead si-lence; children sat frozen, staringahead. B.J. Cleveland, one of ourSokol members, who was the artisticdirector of the Arlington Theatre, broke the silence and started singing aCzech song that we all learned atcamp. We all joined in. B.J ran up anddown in the aisle singing to them en-couraging them to sing. First, theirmouths began to move, but nothingcame out. Finally, songs came forth, atfirst barely audible, then louder andlouder accompanied with bright eyesand wide smiles. The bus rocked withjoy. When we got off at the stadium, they waved and hollered at us from thebus singing. Joy arose from their new-found freedom.

The 1994 Sokol Slet, attended bythe president of the Czech Republic,Vaclav Havel, was held at StrahovsteStadium, the largest stadium in theworld, which is two football fieldslong and had 10 Olympic tennis courtsacross the end. Thunderous bellsrecorded from the St. Vitis Cathedralrang out to announce of the event. Asthousands of Sokol gymnasts marchedonto the field in their units precededby men carrying their flags, excite-ment filled the air. Mass calisthenics, beautiful rhythmic exercises, wereperformed to music by Sokols fromtoddlers to seniors, that being the OldGuard, which included our Texasgroup. In awesome conclusion, 30skydivers landed on the field. As wemarched off, the crowd was silent. They didn’t move. They did not wantthis recreation of wonderful memoriesto end.

Some of us celebrated the Fourth ofJuly by going to a very small pub. Itwas dead silent. After a bit, B. J. begansinging a camp song again, and wejoined in. Finally, everyone wassinging. Passersby heard the joy andentered. They came and came, untilwe were packed like sardines and wewere even standing on the bar! Oneman ran home and got his accordion, and the party lasted until the weehours of the morning. The solemn barbecame a place of joy. As we walkedback to the hotel, people were peace-

fully wandering the streets becausethey had the freedom to do so. A vio-lin could be heard playing in the dis-tance.

As we boarded the bus to leave, alarge, elderly lady ran up and huggedme crying, smiling, and nodding herhead up and down overcome withemotion and thankfulness for our

coming from America who savedthem. From her clothing, I could seethat she was a victim of the ravages ofwar. Overwhelmed by her show ofappreciation, I crammed all of theCzech money I had left into the neckof her dress, hopped on the bus andtook my seat in the back. I watchedout the back window and saw the ladytake the money from her dress and cry.The bus took off, and the old lady ranas hard as she could and chased thebus blowing me kisses until we wereout of sight.

Remember, peace is not freedom, ifyou don’t believe it, just ask theCzechs!

Caregiver’s Corner

Be a Friendto a Caregiverby Georgia FitzhughLodge 25, Ennis

Maybe you know a caregiver andyou would like to help them in someway. But you wonder what you shouldsay, and what you should do in this sit-uation.

You think, “I don’t want to botherthem, or be in the way, but I wouldlike to visit with her for a little while.”She always says that everything isokay, but couldn’t she use a little help?I know that she probably misses beingavailable to be with friends, to do whatshe used to do. I’ll bet she’s depressedabout that. Things are not the same, and they never will be. Maybe Ishould call her today. Or, maybe Ishould just mind my own business.”

So what does a caregiver’s frienddo?

If a caregiver could talk to her/hisfriends who want to help, here areseven things that a caregiver mightsay:

1. Don’t avoid me. Be the friendyou have always been. Come on over, but call before you come becausesometimes we’re out for appoint-ments, or we’re busy around here. It

can get lonely here with just us. Andsometimes it gets boring. No, it’s notthe same, but I’m still your friend.

2. When you visit me at home, don’t judge me or pity me. I am doingthe best I can at this work. You don’thave to feel sorry for me either. I amhere doing this work because I amdoing it for one I love. You don’t haveto fix or improve the situation. This islife as it is, and it is not so bad. Just bea companion. The time I spend as acaregiver may be long, or it may bebrief, but it will pass. Talk, laugh, share, and listen. That’s all.

3. Invite my family members to joinin your activities. Take my kids andteens out with your family memberswhen you go to the park or to themovies. They need a break. Could youdrive them somewhere when I can’tget away to do that? That really wouldhelp me. Being isolated at home isprobably the most inconvenient andwearisome part of the caregiving ex-perience for all of my family members.

4. Help me keep in touch witheveryone we both know. Tell them tocall and send cards or visit. I am stillinterested in being a part of their lives.I still care about them and think aboutthem often. My past experiences andmemories are important to me. So ismy future, and someday I will be ableto take up the work and pastimes Ionce had.

5. What you could bring with you:a cheerful, smiling face, magazines orbooks we might like to read, a DVDmovie or music we might like, food indisposable containers, flowers, oldphotos to talk about, a funny story. Just

bring yourself. 6. Offer to do a quick chore: take

the trash can out, wash my car, bringsome groceries, water the houseplants, sweep the porch, change aburned-out light bulb, do some petcare for me. You don’t know howmuch it will mean to us to have a fewminutes to rest instead of tending tothese chores.

7. Will you come again, or call? For just a short while? Maybe wecould all go out, perhaps to yourhouse. Or, maybe you could stay withmy loved one for an hour while I goout to get my hair cut or take sometime with the kids. Sometimes, I mayneed you to do something, but mostly,I need you in my life.

Thanks. I mean that. Thank you.

prepare for the blow. We both got busyand propped the building whichserved as turkey house and blacksmithshop with 12 by 12 sills. We got out ofthe house without any supper. We en-dured plenty of fear as a tornado brokeloose and took the house and barn withall our belongings. It left us with onlyempty stomachs.

What a tornado can do is a mystery. So much is unbelievable. We had around table with four screwed legs, but when we found the table a half amile away, each leg was unscrewedand scattered apart - the same waywith the recliner. The double barrelshotgun had a shingle nail drove in thesteel barrel. The sewing machine wasopened up in the windmill tower.

After the tragedy, it rained so muchthat the mosquitos were so bad, andwe had no place to live. There were noneighbors, and we were unknown heresince we just moved from Needville toa ranch in open space. After the tragicnight, we walked two miles to somepeople who happened to have a roofon their house. After breakfast thatday, we walked back to see what couldbe done. We picked up enough shin-gles from the house and barn scatteredall over the pasture to reshingle theturkey house and blacksmith shopwhere we were to make our home. Wefound a soaked up mattress and laid iton the roosts after cleaning the dirtfloor. I cooked on the forge in theBlacksmith Shop for six months untilwe got to move to another house.

We lost all our belongings in thefield. Fifty bales of cotton opened up

in the field. We had no insurance. Allour mules and cows died of charbon. We were at a dead end yet faith smiledat us. With spirits high, we survived.

Four years has elapsed, and thiswas August 3, 1936. Our 13-year-oldson Edmond has been taken to Rosen-berg hospital by Dr. Weeks for a rup-tured appendix, which, due to theirneglect, turned into six operations(locked bowels and more). He had afour-month stay in the hospital, and Iwas at his bedside day and night nurs-ing him all those months. My husbandwas sending 10-year-old Calvin toschool and tending the farm. We werepoor, had no car, but we had faith andhopes. Our hospital bill was high sowe had to borrow the money, but wemanaged nicely. We were just gladthat he was alive. That was all thatmattered. With God’s help, his healthwas restored.

The next year, we made a goodcrop. We paid most of our bills, buthad to work all the harder. On August4, 1941, Edmond volunteered into theUnited States Army. He chose thePanama Canal Zone where he servedover three years. He came out a finelooking soldier boy. Calvin was theninducted into the service. He went toOkinawa and Korea where he servedthree years. My husband worked at theFreeport Defense Plant while I was onthe homefront tending the farm.

Now, we have both lost our parents, which left us nice nest eggs, and for-tune smiles at us. We have a comfort-able home - no mansion, but whoneeds one. We are married over 65years in blissful happiness with twogood sons, five grandchildren, andeight great-grandchildren,

Our resting place is here at DamonCatholic Cemetery, but when we are

gone and weeds stand thick among ourshrubs and trees, and the house is oldand tumbled down, and what we onceloved has changed . . .

Remember, we are among you.Love,Louis and Emma

Editor’s Note: Louis lived from 1897to 1990, and Emma lived from 1902 to1995. Edmond passed away in 1991 atthe age of 69, and Calvin passed awayin 2005 at the age of 79.

Hovezi Village Descendants Gather

The Seventh Annual Hovezi Vil-lage Reunion was held at the LaGrange City Library on Sunday, Au-gust 23, 2015. This reunion brings to-gether people who have ancestors andfamily that immigrated to America, mostly Texas, from the village ofHovezi, which lies in the Vsetin Dis-trict of Moravia, Czech Republic.

The reunion was first organizedseven years ago by T.J. Slansky andTed Kaspar who have ancestors fromthis village. While talking to manypeople at the various Czech functionsaround the state, they discovered thatmany other people in Texas also hadancestors from this village.

They were anxious to meet every-one they could find whose ancestorscame from Hovezi. Organizing a vil-lage reunion seemed to be a good for-mat for meeting those people.

The reunion wasn’t originallyplanned to be a continuing event. Butthose who came to the first reunion in2009 enjoyed the gathering greatlyand wanted to hold it again the fol-lowing year. As word about the re-union got out, new people begansigning up to attend.

The programs are varied. They in-clude sharing family lineage, research, family stories, and programs on any-thing that might apply to Hovezi andthe neighboring villages of Huslenky,Hostalkova and others. Visiting is amost enjoyable part of the reunion, asis svacina, provided by several peoplewho attend.

The attendance each year has beenbetween 35 and 40 attendees. Ninetyindividuals have registered as havingfamily from Hovezi. Three familieson the register, who are in contact withTed and T. J., live in other states.

Hovezi Mayor Antonin Konareksent greetings and best wishes to allwho attended in 2015 that have fami-lies from Hovezi.

The next reunion will be held onAugust 28, 2016. For informationabout the reunion or to get your nameon the Hovezi Reunion mailing list, please contact Ted Kaspar at [email protected] or [email protected].
