Stiegelmeyer beds promote the healing process – about that there can be no doubt. But healthy though bed rest may be, some patients also need to be activated early on in the recuperation process. And this sometimes necessitates extensive support and assistance from nurses and tremendous effort on the part of the patient.

In our view, patient mobilisation should be done differently, and we’re very pleased to offer you a genuine Stiegelmeyer innovation that not only intelligently meets the needs of the patients and nurses alike, but looks terrific: the Stiegelmeyer Vertica hospital bed.

Standing up made easy. Our take on standing up.For us, mobilisation means activating the patient without overtaxing him – or for that matter nurses, who shouldn’t be subjected to undue physical strain. So we thought, before standing a patient up, why not move the patient and his bed into an upright position so that nurses don’t have to go through all the effort of pulling the patient over the edge of the bed.

Thus the Vertica gently lifts the patient from a prone to a sitting position, and from there to an upright position, thus allowing for a smooth and stepless standing-up process – which can of course be interrupted at any time to allow the nurse to adjust the process to the patient’s needs and state of health.

Thus patient activation gets off to a safe start, and can be ended at any time.

It’s easy to sit up.In a conventional hospital bed, it’s often difficult if not downright impossible for a patient to assume a genuine sitting position – which of course cannot be achieved by simply adjusting the bed’s backrest, thigh rest and lying surface, since the patient is still essentially in a horizontal position.

But it’s a different story with the pathbreaking Vertica, which enables the patient to assume a genuine sitting position. What’s more, the Vertica foot board doubles as a table, thus enabling the patient to eat or talk to visitors while seated comfortably (large picture). In addition, the patient’s head is at the same height as that of his visitors, which has an extremely positive effect on the patient’s state of mind and self-esteem. For in the final analysis, autonomy and mobility are key wellness factors that make a significant contribution to the healing process.

The easy mobilisation afforded by the Vertica is beneficial for the patient in other ways as well. A great many more activation measures can be realised with substantially less exertion – an advantage that helps stabilise blood circulation over the long term and expedites the healing process. And this in turn can potentially allow for an earlier release, thus cutting healthcare costs.

The Vertica’s head and foot boards can be fully removed, and the foot board doubles as a table, or a surface for bed linens. When the backrest is moved to a nearly 90 degree angle, the sitting surface is reduced to an ergonomically optimal size (Figure 2).

Optional implement bars allow nurses to place implements around the patient flexibly (Figure 3).

Safe as safe can be.Safety always involves both the safety that’s designed into a product, plus how safe the user feels the product is. Thus for example, extremely weak patients will feel safer in a Vertica bed because having a table in front of them protects them from falling forward (Figure 1). What’s more, adjustable and readily accessible handles add an extra measure of stability and physical safety. In addition, a side protection element that can be fitted onto the bed also closes off the gap at the feet (e.g. when patients are attached to the bed in accordance with the German government’s BrArM guidelines).

Other safety features come into play as well when the Vertica is used to bring a patient into the upright position in preparation for standing up. A patient cannot be brought into the upright position unless the brakes has been applied. And with the Vertica a patient feels far safer since his feet reach the floor quickly, and thus he feels secure by virtue of having solid ground under his feet. What’s more, shock patients can be returned quickly to the CPR or shock position from any bed position during mobilisation or circulation training.

The mobilisation-support handles provide an extra measure of safety when a patient is being brought to the upright position (Figure 2) and can be swivelled out of the way if additional space is needed.

The mobilisation supports can be adjusted in such a way that the patient can reach them easily (Figure 3).

The innovative truncation of the calf rest allows for a comfortable seating height and secure contact with the floor for the patient (large picture).

Safety: it doesn’t get much simpler than this.

The Vertica’s MultiFlex side protection system has numerous advantages, the most exciting one being its extreme user-friendliness and the fact that the system is self explanatory. From the get-go, each hand movement can be carried out correctly and intuitively, thus making the user feel safe right from the start. The side protection elements can be raised and lowered with just a few flicks of the wrist.

And if the mobilisation supports aren’t needed, they are easy to unlock and lower, thus providing you with ready access to the patient with just a few flicks of the wrist.

for the emergency positions, which can be activated at any time from any bed position.

The function that allows a patient to stand up can be reversed at any time.

The Vertica allows a patient to be moved into the following emergency positions with the push of a button:

Emergency position 1: CPREmergency position 2: head down Patient operating leversUsing the patient operating levers (Figure 2), the patient can use all functions offered by a comfortable and fully motorised hospital bed.

Vertica’s electronic control system provides the ultimate in user-friendliness, user comfort and, above all, safety. The bed integrates a programmable control box with two control levers and numerous easy to use functions. All safety-related functions can be reliably deactivated so as to avoid inopportune operation of the two control levers. Staff operating element Safety is of paramount importance in a hospital setting. Thus the entire process of bringing a patient into the upright position in preparation for standing should only be realised under professional supervision, and with the Vertica can only be initiated by a staff member (Figure 1). The same goes

Perfection – down to the smallest detail.

People will only use technical devices if they’re user-friendly. Conversely, if a device is difficult to use, people will simply stop using it. Thus the Vertica’s stable mobilisation supports are easy to bring into position with only one hand (large picture above).

Extending the mobilisation supports to lengthen the bed (Figure 1).

The mobilisation-support handles allow the patient to stand up unimpeded and can be swivelled out of the way if additional space is needed (Figure 2, left).

The foot board can be used as a table or as a generously proportioned surface for bed linens. The removable head board allows for unimpeded access to the patient (Figures 2 and 3).

The Vertica is easy to manoeuvre because its wheels are close together; and it exhibits outstanding tipping stability thanks to its automatically telescoping support rollers (large picture above).

The short distance between the Vertica’s wheels makes the bed easy to turn, which is particularly useful when it comes to transporting patients in a hospital (Figure 1).

14

A lighter workload Vertica lightens your staff’s workload. Thanks to Vertica’s optimally automated patient mobilisation process, only one staff member need support the patient when he stands up. And best of all, the bed – not the caregiver – bears most of the patient’s weight. This means that all nurses can mobilise and activate patients effortlessly.

The Vertica’s groundbreaking technology does virtually all the heavy “lifting” for you. The bed’s optimally engineered movement process allows for patient mobilisation, even in the absence of a physically strong staff member. And this in turn allows for considerably greater staff deployment flexibility.
