![Page 15: Version and Date Here. Introduction to RAPt What RAPt Does RAPt works to help people with drug and alcohol dependence, both in prison and in the community,](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062805/5697bfc51a28abf838ca6b1d/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
What is NPS?
New/Novel Psychoactive Substances is a generic term for the relatively recent up rise of substances produced to mimic
the effects of traditional illicit drugs.
NPS produces similar effects to illegal drugs such as Cocaine, Ecstasy and Cannabis.
Other expressions to describe NPS, such as “legal highs”, are inaccurate and unhelpful as many NPS have now been
controlled under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 and therefore NPS can refer to both controlled and non controlled
substances.

How We Support Clients?
This year (2015) RAPt have launched their own strategy as we have identified that NPS use and addiction is on the rise.
Ultimately, the purpose of this strategy is to reduce NPS use in the prisons and in the community and raise awareness of the dangers.
The following four goals can help us achieve this purpose:
• Get those addicted to NPS into treatment programmes and support providers. • Provide appropriate support for those using, but not addicted to• Educate RAPt staff and our partners about NPS and the potential side effects of using
different NPS and interventions / treatment options• Collect data about NPS to better inform our approach and keep up to date with emerging
NPS and patterns of use
