The Version 24 offers powerful and easy to use Engraving capabilities for CNC machining.  This exercise has been created to teach you how to use the 2 Axis Engrave feature.  We will start this training exercise with the DXF file pre‐loaded into the BobCAD‐CAM V24 software.  

. Step 1 With the file loaded we will go ahead and create a new layer to define the stock parameters.  Place your cursor in the Layer‐UCS‐Post Manager and right‐click your mouse.  

  Click the Add New Layer item in the popup menu.

This will automatically create a new layer.  Name this layer Stock.  Then click the active layer button next to the new stock layer to make it active.  

  Now everything we draw will be placed on this layer.  Click the Rectangle feature button from the main CAD Toolbar.    

  This will load the Rectangle feature into the Data Manager.

We will define our stock by entering: 23.5 for Length X 23.5 for Width Y Select Bottom Left as the Origin. Click OK to draw the shape.   Click the Cancel button to exit the feature.  

Now click the View All icon   from the main view toolbar to obtain a clear view of the entire screen. Click the CAM Tab to access the CAM Tree.  

  You may need to click the small (+) Plus symbol next to Milling Stock in the Tree to expand it.  Place your cursor on Stock Geometry in the Tree, right click your mouse and click Re/Select.  

  Now hold down your Shift key on the keyboard and click one of the lines of the square you created.  The entire square will highlight.  Now hit the Spacebar key on the keyboard to indicate Ok.

Now switch into a 3D View.  Click the Views feature icon pull‐down from the View toolbar and click IS0 2.  

  This changes the view. 

  Now we want to blank out the stock and switch back to the original CAD layer.  First place your cursor on Milling stock in the CAM Tree and right click your mouse.  Click Blank.

Now click the first layer (0) as the active layer and then un‐check the blank‐un‐blank layer toggle button.  

  Step 2 Place your cursor on Milling Stock in the CAM Tree, right click your mouse and click Mill 2 Axis.  

  This will launch the 2 Axis Wizard.

Click the Engraving option and click the Next button to advance the wizard to the Select Geometry page.  

  Click the Select Geometry button first.  The wizard goes away and you will automatically be placed in selection mode.  Place your cursor in the upper LEFT area of the screen (1), click your left mouse button and hold it down while dragging your cursor to the lower RIGHT (2) position of the drawing screen.  When there, release your left mouse button to select everything.  

 Now hit the Spacebar on your keyboard to indicate OK.

Then the wizard will re‐appear and will display the geometry in the preview window.  

  Click the Next button to advance the wizard to the Feature Engrave page.  

  The Clearance Plane is set already. The Rapid Plane is .1 The Top of Part is 0  Click the Next button to advance the wizard to the Posting page.

Click Next again which will advance you to the Rough page.  

  You can enter a Tool Diameter of .125 Corner Radius of 0 is fine. The rough page offers an end mill tool.  However sometimes you may want to use a V‐Carving tool for engraving.     

  This page also allows you to customize Speeds and Feed rates.  By un‐checking the Use System Feeds & Speeds option you can manually change these settings for this part program.

To change Speed and feed setting on a tool in the library you would:  

1. Click the Tool Library button. 2. Click the tool type. 3. Click on an existing tool in the list. 4. Click the Modify button. 5. Click the Manual button. 

 

  

6. Click the OK button to save the data.  In this exercise we are showing an end mill.  Click the Next button to advance the wizard to the Parameters page.

  Enter a Total Depth of .05 Click the Finish button to save the data and close the wizard.  Step 3 Right click your mouse on Engrave in the Tree and click Compute Toolpath.  

  This will generate the toolpath.

The result:  

  The example being used in this exercise is extreme yet very doable.  The next step is to create the NC program.

Step 4 Now go to the top of the CAM Tree, click the small plus (+) symbol to expand the CAM Part folder.  Now right click your cursor on Milling Tools and click Post.  

   This will generate the NC program.  Note that the larger the toolpath file is the more time it may take to generate the NC program depending on your computer resources.    

  You can use the Advanced Add‐On Editor to backplot this file if the have the editor.

If you are going to use a V‐Carving tool for this program and would like to backplot the file properly in the editor, you will need to change some tool data in the code.  To launch the editor, place your cursor inside the post manager area where the NC code is, right click your mouse and click Edit CNC.  

  The Advanced Editor will launch and automatically load the NC program into it.  Click the Backplot button from the main toolbar.  

  Now take a look at the third line of code in the editor.  It reads:  (MTOOL T1 S1 D.125 C0. A0. H5.) Change the “S1” to S7.  This changes the displayed tool to a V cutting tool. Change the “A0” To A90.  This represents the 90‐degree taper on the V‐Carving tool you will be using.  Now the line of code should read:  (MTOOL T1 S7 D.125 C0. A90. H5.)

Click the Play button to begin backplotting the program in the viewing area.  The results:
