Editorial India is a land of many cultures, faiths, traditions and rituals. Different

Indian religions are like petals of one flower. This diversity extends over to the languages as well. It is a home to numerous languages, including Sanskrit which is one of the oldest languages in the world. The popular aphorism –

‘ कोस-कोस पर बदले पानी , चार कोस पर बानी’। (The language spoken in India changes every few kilometers , just like the taste of the water), very aptly depicts the linguistic diversity in India. The Vernacular Club aims to expose the students to the rich linguistic culture of our country. The various activities organised under the aegis of the club provide a platform to the students to explore the vernacular languages of India and understand that they are closely linked with each other just as the people and the rich culture & heritage of India. We hope to nurture and groom our students to become young Indians who would value and uphold the true Indian customs and traditions. Club Masters Brinda Ahuja | Pooja Datta

Bhasha Anveshan The first Vernacular Club Activity for the session 2017-18 was conducted on 11.5.17. The students were briefed about the club and its aim. They were shown a PPT and made familiar with the various languages spoken in different states of India. They also attempted a worksheet and answered questions related to the PPT. The activity was aimed at triggering the curiosity and interest of the students who were engaged in several activities through out the year which gave them an opportunity to explore the vernacular languages of India.

Salutations In a special assembly organised on 28.7.17, traditionally dressed up students representing the different States of India, enlightened their peers about how people greet in different Indian Languages. The Activity focussed on the following States and their languages- Punjab, Gujarat, Bihar, Maharashtra, Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan, West Bengal and Haryana.

VERNACULAR CLUB - भाषा संगम

Exploring Regional Scripts The students learnt and practised to write their name in different vernacular languages of India and beautifully calligraphed it in the activity organised on 28.8.17. The languages chosen for the activity were Urdu, Marathi, Kannada, Bengali, Punjabi, Gujarati, Tamil and Telugu. It was an enriching & joyful experience for the students and they enthusiastically participated in the activity

Rangmanch The activity organized on 26.09.17

was aimed at providing an opportunity to the students to explore Punjabi language. The students presented a skit in Punjabi in a special assembly. The students who were dressed up in traditional Punjabi costumes highlighted the need to avoid wastage of food. The names of various organizations where leftover food after events like marriages, birthday parties can be donated were also announced. The students enjoyed the presentation and promised to avoid wasting food.

Bhasha Darpan The aim of the activity ‘Bhasha Darpan’ which was conducted on 26.12.17 was to develop and create interest of the students in different regional languages and thus preserve India’s multiculturalism through multilingualism. The students were shown videos which apprised them of some basic phrases used in day to day communication in Assamese, Bangla, Tamil, Kannada, Marathi, Gujarati and Punjabi. It was an interactive session wherein students were made to practise the phrases they heard and read, along with the videos screened. The activity was a joyful and enriching experience for the students.

Cultural Fiesta 'Cultural Fiesta ‘ was organised on 30.10.17. The students learnt songs in different regional languages of India and presented them in the morning assembly. Singing songs teaches children how language is constructed and assists with the acquisition of language. Thus the activity not only helped the students to appreciate the diverse cultures but also gave them an opportunity to adopt them. This authentic cultural experience made the students aware and proud about the fact that they live in a country that speaks 26 official languages and 724 recorded dialects .

Vernacular Club has made an excellent effort to introduce the kids to their rich cultural heritage and has developed enthusiasm for learning different languages in our children . Ms. Simran Ahuja M/O Chintan Ahuja III D

Bharat Mera Gaurav The activity ‘Bharat Mera Gaurav’, was conducted on 29.01.18. It gave the students yet another opportunity to explore the scripts of different regional languages of India. The students learnt to write the word ‘Indian’ in different regional languages - Bangla, Gujarati, Sindhi, Assamese, Oriya, Tamil, Telugu and Punjabi. They beautifully calligraphed it on colourfully decorated A4 sheets.

The efforts of the school towards imparting knowledge about India and its culture are worth appreciation. My daughter was really excited to learn to write her name in Punjabi. It was a great learning experience for her. Amit Chopra F/O Ridhima Chopra III F
