Volunteers Needed – Spring Fair We are looking forward to seeing everyone at the 150th Spring Fair on Saturday 19th October from 11am to 4pm. At the Fair will be many rides, stalls and various community groups sharing their passions with the wider VPSK community. In order for this day to be a success, we will be looking for many volunteers to help run stalls, set up and pack up on the day. Please put this date in your diaries, next term we will be formally contacting all parents to see if they can spare an hour to help us run this event. Thank you to all the families who donated soft drink or chocolate towards our Spring Fair. We received almost 500 cans of soft drink and over 200 blocks of chocolate, an amazing effort. The next fundraiser will be held in Week 2 of Term 2 where the students will be invited to come dressed to School in a Onesie and donate a plush toy to the Lucky Dip Stall. More information about this day will be sent home next term. Any money raised from the Fair will go towards improving the digital devices and computers used in the school by all students. How wonderful the prospect for our students and staff to have new digital resources to complement modern pedagogical practice. Update for donations Spring Fair – The school will be holding a Crazy Hair Day on Friday 9th August. Originally, the plan was to ask for donations of jars and items for the Lucky Jar Stall. The Fair Committee has decided to change this to a cold coin donation and will source the items and containers themselves. This will assist us in meeting hygiene and allergy sensitivities. End of Term Just a reminder that the end of Term 2 will be this Friday at 2.30pm. Please note the earlier dismissal time and arrange child care should you need it. School will resume for all students at 9.00am on 15 July. We hope you have a relaxing and safe holiday wherever you may be. We look forward to seeing you all when school returns on Monday 15th July at 9am.

Changes to Parking at the School The following letter has been received from the City Council. I phoned them to find that they are hoping to make the changes during the school holidays in July. Please check all the signage before parking in areas stated below and note the no U-turn proposal. Nurlendi Road, Vermont – Parking Restriction Changes Council has recently met with Vermont Primary School to discuss traffic and parking issues surrounding the school during the school peak periods. As a result of these discussions and site investigations, I advise as follows. During the school peak periods it was noted that motorists park illegally within the ‘No Stopping’ area on Nurlendi Road between Webb Court and the school crossing, undertake ‘u-turns’ at the Webb Court intersection causing traffic safety concerns, non-compliance with the existing ’2-minute’ parking restrictions on the western side of Nurlendi Road and congestion along Nurlendi Road. After taking into account the above, arrangements have been made to undertake the following parking restriction changes during the school holidays:

Prohibit parking on the western side of Nurlendi Road between Webb Court and the school crossing parking at all times to improve traffic safety;

Replace the existing ‘2-minute’ parking restrictions on the western side of Nurlendi Road abutting Vermont Primary School with a ‘No Parking’ restriction on school days. It should be noted that motorists may park for up to two (2) minutes and they are not permitted to leave a vehicle by more than three (3) metres.

Install a ‘No Parking, 8.30 -9.15am & 3-4pm, School Days’ parking restriction on the west side of Nurlendi Road from Cantley Lane to the southern boundary of 14 Nurlendi Road to encourage parking turnover and reduce parking demand upon Nurlendi Road between Canterbury Road service road and Karwitha Street.

Install a ‘U-turn’ prohibition at the intersection of Nurlendi Road and Webb Court.

Student of the Month: June This month we have continued our focus on the Vermont Primary School value: “To Be Respectful”. Teachers have been impressed with the respect shown by students towards their peers, their teachers and their learning.

Congratulations to the following students who have been recognised by receiving a Student of the Month award for June!

Vermont Primary School Curriculum Literacy in Foundation In Foundation over the past few weeks, we have been learning about sequencing the start, middle and end of stories. One of our activities was reading Little Red Riding Hood and ordering the story’s main events using pictures before rewriting the story ourselves. Look at our amazing examples of the start, middle and end of Little Red Riding Hood!

Start Middle End

We love retelling stories and talking about the events that have happened in a text! When we read at home, please ask us all about the book and keep us practicing this amazing comprehension strategy. Resilience Project – Level 2 In Grade’s 1 and 2, students have embraced the opportunity to learn about resilience, gratitude, empathy and mindfulness through the Resilience Project. They have participated in yoga and mindfulness colouring to calm and refocus the mind, have begun to understand their emotions and identified positive ways to react to various situations. Students from 2DW have been reflecting on what they are grateful for at home and school by writing on a gratitude wall. Some reflections from students show how they are building resilience and happiness: Emily Fuller 2DW I have enjoyed learning about how to react positively to different scenarios and to think of the feelings of others. I also liked learning about how to bounce back when things do not go my way. Isaac Cresswell 2DW I enjoyed mindfulness colouring and yoga because it calms me down and makes me feel relaxed. I also learnt new ways to make sure others feel included in games.

STEM Students in Level 2 have been working on creating and solving sharing situations in mathematics lessons. Using a variety of materials, students have had the opportunity to create sharing situations where they demonstrate their understanding of equal groups, sharing by ones and sharing collections in groups, for example 2’s, 3’s and 5’s. They have also used their understanding of skip counting and addition to help them solve problems. Below, students showed how they could seat people equally amongst tables at a restaurant. When creating the tables using kinder squares, students also noticed and applied their understanding of fractions to fold and cut their squares into equal parts.

ROCK FEST Wednesday 19th June 2019

On Wednesday 19th June the school Rock Band went to Templestowe College to compete in the Rock Fest Battle of the Bands Competition. The competition was mostly made up of High School students. We competed in the Junior Section for Yr8 and below. We also got to watch the Senior Bands (Yr9-12) perform. They were awesome. Our band has 7 students from Yr5 and Yr6 – Maya 6ZA on vocal, Carson 6BP on drums, Hrishi 6AW on Guitar, Will 5PA on Guitar, Reiner 5GP on Guitar, Grace 5KM on Keyboards and Ryan 5PA on Bass Guitar and Backing vocals. It was fun playing our song All The Small Things in front of the Senior Students. It was hard competing against High School Students, but we had a pretty good roll. Thanks to Mr. Fraser for organising and driving us to the gig.

Community Information On Wednesday the 5th of June, 10 of the Grade 6 students and myself baked some delicious muffins for the staff! We were hosting an event to #RaiseDough for young people in need. The Grade 6 students and I were fundraising to support the good work of ReachOut Australia – who support young people and their families with online mental health support. Together we can 'bake a difference'! A big thank you to those Grade 6 students who helped out on the day, they were wonderful chefs, and the staff really enjoyed their baked goods!
