From The Chaplain The Importance of Slowing Down We live in a society where we are expected to just go, go, go. Rest is considered indulgent, and most people feel guilty at the thought of taking a minute just for themselves. Now, obviously we cannot just put our legs up and hope that someone else will do our work for us. Work and school are pretty much non-negotiable, and if you are a parent then you have even less time to yourself. Rest becomes this foreign concept, far out of the realms of the possible. However, sometimes the most productive thing we can do is rest. Have you ever been so busy that you have made yourself sick, or snapped at your loved ones due to stress? We all know what a lack of rest can do to us, and it is when we run ourselves ragged and spread ourselves so thin, that we struggle to accomplish even the smallest of things. If you’re moving too fast to enjoy the simple things in life, to go for a walk or to enjoy a good meal, then it might be time to put the brakes on, and give yourself permission to slow down. Why it is important to slow down sooner rather than later:

1. It’s good for you. Studies show that getting eight hours of sleep can lead to better mental health and lower anxiety, not to mention the obvious fact that a well-rested mind leads to clearer thinking and better work.

2. It makes you more likable. If you’re always tired (because you are doing too much), chances are you might also be cranky. It is not fun to be around someone who’s always complaining or in a bad mood. Your friends, family, and colleagues will thank you if you head out for a walk, take a nap or say “no” once in a while.

3. It helps you focus on what really matters. It’s possible to strive so hard that you end up missing the most important things in life. When all you have are obligations, you forget to savour the special moments. To be fully present in the lives of the ones we love.

When we slow down, we make a few important declarations to the world. “I can’t do everything, but I can do the essential things.” “My loved ones deserve my best.” “When I do less, I do better.” When you stop rushing and slow down, you enjoy life more. Over the school holidays try and take some time away from the business of life. Spent time outside, read a book, play a board game. Take a deep breath, you and your family are worth it. Carly Cassidy – Chaplain [ [email protected] ] Pastoral Care for the VPS Community, available Tuesdays and Wednesdays Walk to School When: 7th October – 1st November Every October, Walk to School encourages Victorian primary school kids to walk, ride or scoot to and from school. It’s a great way to help students learn healthy habits and achieve the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity, every day. Active travel options to and from school are also a great opportunity to connect and chat with your kids, plus meet up with other local families along the way. If you can’t walk all the way, your child can still get involved – simply drive part way and walk, ride or scoot the rest! By participating, you could help your school win great regional prizes and you will enjoy the benefits of walking, riding and scooting to and from school! Commit to Walk to School today and build healthy habits for life. Last year, over 600 Vermont Primary School students participated, accumulating to over 12,000 walks, rides are scoots to or from school. This was an outstanding achievement and no doubt can be equalled or even surpassed this year!

Vermont Primary School Curriculum Literacy in Level 2 Grade 1 & 2 students have been learning about fairy tales and myths during their writing lessons, exploring the key features that are incorporated in each. Focusing on a particular fairy tale/myth, each class developed a story map to identify key events from the text and discussed possible changes that could made to them. Students were challenged to make at least 1 change to the original texts, culminating in Grade 1 students writing their own ‘twisted’ fairy tale and Grade 2 students writing their own ‘twisted’ myth. Features of each text that students changed included the character/s, setting/s, problem/s and/or solution/s.

All students from Foundation – 6 participated in explicit lessons on being

smart, safe and responsible online during Child Safety Week. The Level 2

students designed their own avatar – a picture that can be used in place

of a photograph. Here are a few of the gorgeous designs the students

came up with:

As well as educating students about what pictures are and are not safe

to share online, we also focus on what information should and should

not be shared. “Don’t yap about your YAPPY

Inter School Coding Afternoon There was much conversation between the students from Vermont Primary, Rangeview Primary and Vermont Secondary College on September 5th, as the three schools gathered at VPS for our second Inter School Coding afternoon. Ten students from each school were selected to participate in the event, where they were asked to share and combine their knowledge and skills in coding and cyber safety to create a game or quiz using Scratch. Most students had been introduced using the Cisco video conferencing TVs earlier in the week, which enabled them to meet and start a conversation about what they wanted to create prior to the day. The rich conversations and sharing of knowledge made for a powerful learning experience and students were disappointed when the afternoon drew to a close, wanting more time to finish and debug their programs. I am hoping that next year, we can run more than one session to give the students more time to plan and execute their ideas. Many thanks to the VPS students and the staff and students from Rangeview and Vermont Secondary for their enthusiasm and organisation that made the afternoon a resounding success. I can’t wait to see what the students will create in 2020!
