John Paul Jones was the son of a gardener, that started a life on the sea at the young age of 13. After a short career as a trader in the West Indies Islands he fled to Virginia after killing a seaman in “self-defense.” In 1775 with the Revolutionary War heating up he signed up as a lieutenant and quickly gained command of the Ranger. The Ranger was a quick and sprightly ship of 18 guns that Jones used to capture several merchant ships and aggravate the British Navy. When Jones was promoted to captain of the Bonhomme Richard he gained the recognition that we know about today. Jones attacked superior forces in the Bonhomme Richard and seized the British ship Serapis that was more heavily armed than Jones’s ship. During the engagement the British captain called out to Jones. “Has your ship struck?” Jones famous response was, “I have not yet begun to fight!” The Bonhomme Richard had to be scuttled following the engagement and Jones took command of the Serapis. The British Admiralty attempted to court-martial the British captain; however, eventually the captain was knighted for his gallantry. John Paul Jones will forever be known as the man the humbled the British Navy.
