Consider going on a whale watching cruise. The California Gray Whale makes the longest mass migration of any marine mammal as they migrate annually along the west coast of North America from the summer feeding grounds in the Bering Sea to the winter grounds of the Baja California lagoons and back again along the Orange County coast during the months of December through April. The gray whales seem to enjoy the beauty of the coastline as well. Most whale watching cruises take in the scenic backdrops while viewing the gentle giants just a few hundred yards from shore. Due to the geography of the orange county coastline, surrounding Newport Har- bor, the ocean conditions are comparable to a fresh water lake with very calm/flat seas, which allows whale watchers to fully enjoy this amazing migration. WHY IS THE TAX FILING DEADLINE ON MONDAY, APRIL 18TH? As you can plainly see from the calendar section to the left, the income tax filing deadline is on Monday, April 18th, 2016. April 15th this year falls on a Friday. So, why make the filing deadline three days later? Maybe the Federal government is feeling generous and wants to give you the taxpayer a bit more time? Not exactly. You can thank Abra- ham Lincoln for the extra couple of days. April 16th is Emancipation day. That is to say, the day that Lincoln freed the slaves with his infamous Emancipation Proclama- tion. It is in fact a holiday in the District of Columbia, known to you and me as Washington D.C. By law, District of Columbia holidays affect tax filing deadlines in the same way that a federal holiday would. Normally, emancipation day would be April 16th. With Satur- day being April 16th, it had to be moved to closest weekday, which is Friday April 15th, thus giving you and me, three more days to file our beloved tax returns. ADULT LIBRARIAN COMES TO VENICE SKILLS CENTER’S - ESL CLASSES Adult librarian Chrissy Carr of the Westwood branch of the Los Angeles Public Library (LAPL) visited the University Adult School campus. Uni- versity is one of many sites on the west-side and Hollywood that are part of Venice Skills Center. Upper level ESL students from Ms. Jahre’s level five & six, and Mr. Nagel’s level four class had the opportunity to learn what the LAPL has to offer students committed to making the next step. Student’s use of LAPL system is not just about English competency, but consumption of English language publications and ultimately integrating themselves successfully into American society. LAPL is available to all Angelinos at no cost. See the photo gallery on page 2 Notes from Mr. Badeau Thank you all for your hard work each and every day. There is much to do to prepare for the end of this school year. Please, become familiar with your End of year checklist soon. Graduation 2016 Meeting Emerson ALC Tuesday, April 17th Room 3 SUMMER SCHOOL COMES SOON TO VENICE SKILLS CENTER Summer School! It’s been several years since we’ve been able to offer a summer program to both adults and concurrent students. Due to the addi- tional funds from the Consortium, all DACE service areas will be offering classes in ESL, CTE and Academic courses, over a six-week period from June 20 - July 29, 2016, Monday through Fri- day. Both Emerson ALC and Venice Skills Center will have four-hour classes from 8:15 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The goal of the summer program is to offer classes that can produce numerous course completions during this short session; so only courses of 30 to 100 hours are being offered. This will be an excellent opportunity for many of our students to continue their education, complete a course, and reach their educational goals that much quicker! Instructors from all service areas who may not have received a summer assignment will have their applications sent to Central Office to create a pool of available instructors. Vacant as- signments will be filled from this pool. LEGISLATIVE DAY IN SACRAMENTO OPENS DOORS FOR DACE - CCAE REPRESENTATIVES APO Thomas Hunt and other DACE administrators visited our states capital, April 4th 5th. The purpose of which was for CCAE (California Council for Adult Education) representatives from LAUSD to confirm support for adult education in general and specifi- cally for the $500 million dollar AEBG (Adult Educa- tion Block Grant) that is currently being shared and distributed through the LARAEC (Los Angeles Re- gional Adult Education Consortium). All legislators visited were united in their support of the AEBG shared funding and cautiously optimistic for support of COLA’s or Cost of Living Adjustments related to funding needs.
