Until 1797 it was the capital of Venecia republic and it’ s one of the biggest cities in

Since its founding, the city has suffered from periodic flooding. Now the city has big
problems because of that. In spring and fall there is what is called “acqua alta” This is San Marcos square.

Basilica of San Marcos The construction of the
basilica began in 828 to house the body of St. Marcos brought from Alexandria. It became the Cathedral in 1807. It has more than 4,000 square meters of mosaics, some of the thirteenth century, and 500 columns of the third century.
