Archbishop’s Annual Appeal The Vicariate Outreach Program

“Our Faith, Our Future” In the spirit of stewardship-Sharing God’s Gifts-the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal initiated the Vicariate Outreach Program in 1997. The Program offers support to local organizations that, by their efforts, are a big meaningful ex-tension of the mission of the Catholic Church and her teachings. The Archdiocese and the 2018 Appeal-Our Faith, Our Future, has received broad acclaim for sharing more than $15M over the previous twenty years of this effort. With the support of all parish households, we remain enthusiastic about continuing and improving this vital out-reach program this year as well. If you desire to suggest a worthy local charity for funding by the Vicariate Outreach Program, please contact the parish office. An outreach program of this scope requires following a time-tested process. If you make a suggestion it will be reviewed and considered for nomination-not all suggestions will become nominations as funds are limited. Please be sure to include as much information on the program as possible. Parish nominations are reviewed and confirmed by the Archdiocesan Vicariate Outreach Committee. Thank you for your concern and generosity.

Evening of Recollection: The Holy Angels in Family Life Basilica of the Immaculate Conception Thursday, May 24, 2018 Program: 5:30 P.M. Holy Mass followed by 6:00 P.M. Refreshments 6:30 P.M. Presentation:

The Holy Angels in Family Life

Followed by information for those who wish to begin the formation year towards the consecration to the Guardian Angel. Preached by Fr. Wolfgang Seitz, OCR. RSVP required, please call 860-422-4901. The angels have been largely forgotten by most Catholics, though they play a key role (after Jesus and Mary) in the natural and supernatural life of every human being. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states, “Form its beginning until death human life is surrounded by [the angels’] watchful care and intercession” (CCC 336). The angels are very interested in the life the family, called by the Church rightly “the domestic Church”. The conference will also focus on how we can cooperate actively with the Guardian Angels in our family life.

Our Faith, Our Future If you haven’t already, please donate to this year’s Archbishop’s Annual Appeal (AAA). The theme this year is: “Our Faith, Our Future.” It is the “bread and butter” fundraiser of archdiocesan life because

whatever is collected in a given year is spent that same year for basic activities, including charity, and an accounting is given annually for all the various components that are part and parcel of the AAA—everything from our seminarians’ education to the approximately 250 local charities throughout the Archdiocese that receive financial support in the name of the Catholic people. Your generosity in the past has been amazing, and we look forward to meeting our goal of $10 million dollars this year.

Pro-Life Thought of the Week

We are the people of life because God, in His unconditional love,

has given us the Gospel of life and by this same Gospel

we have been transformed and saved. The Gospel of Life, # 79 Pope John Paul II

The Pope Francis Center for Renewal

“After the fire there was a tiny whispering sound” 1 Sam 19:12 “How can God possibly forgive me?” This is a question that can haunt a person for most of their life. I came across a lady who had been victimized by abortion when she was a teenager in the 1940’s. Even though she was pressured by her parents to have the abortion as a young teenager, she spent the next sixty years of her life with deep remorse and feeling like she was damned. A lifetime is a short time for guilt and wounds to remain as fresh as the day in which they were inflicted. The weight of this guilt creates an interior vacuum in which the joy and peace given by the Holy Spirit is smothered and the person is left alone, feeling totally beyond the reach of any hope. Thomas Merton once wrote that hell is a place where people are left entirely alone with them-selves for eternity. The thought of this can be at least a little daunting even for the most pious of souls. The mission of The Pope Francis Center for Renewal calls together many people who believe they are beyond redemption. They live in the shadows of our city, ashamed of the mistakes they made in life. Some even attend Mass at the Basilica on a regular basis even though they sit behind the pillars and never dare to approach the sanctuary. Similar to Zacchaeus in his tree, they look at Je-sus from afar and never think for a moment that they can look at Jesus eye to eye. It is a mysteri-ous and ironic thing to hear St. Peter cry out, “Depart from me Lord for I am a sinful man.” Lk 5:8 One would think that the sinner should beg for Jesus with the desperation of a drowning man. But the hallmark of true contrition is true humility; the terrifying experience of the truth of oneself as

revealed in the light of Christ. This is why St. Paul writes, “When I am weak, it is then that I am strong.” 2 Cor 12:10 The Pope Francis Center for Renewal welcomes those who live each day that which St. Peter cried out so long ago. Nevertheless, the Holy Spirit is the advocate who prays to the Father through us, with us and in us. God is driven by His love to come to us and make His dwelling within us. Jesus calls up to Zacchaeus in his tree, “Come quickly, for today I must stay at your house.” Lk 19:5. In fact, the more humble the heart, the more pleasing is the home for the Holy Spirit. The Pope Francis Center for Renewal is the place where humility meets its just reward; reunification with the Holy Spirit of peace who is overjoyed to return to those who have encountered the truth about themselves through the purification of life’s many fires.

“Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And You shall renew the face of the earth.”
