Insertion
Needle removal
• Complytoaseptictechnique throughout the procedure
• Disinfecttheinjectionsiteaccording to local policy
• Removethecannulafromthe packaging and lower the wings
• Adoptyourpreferredgripandremove the needle cover
• Insertthecannulaatalowangle
• Uponprimaryflashbacklowerthe angle almost parallel to the skin
• Advancethecannulaslightly,twoto threemillimetres,toensurethecannula tip is in the vein
• Stabilisethecannula
• Easetheneedlebacktwotothree millimetres
• Secondaryflashbackbetweentheneedle and cannula will confirm correct placement in the vein
• Advancethecannulacompletelyinto the vein
• Removethetourniquet
• Stabilisethecannula
• Occludetheveinjustabovecannula tip and withdraw the needle holding the needle grip or grip plate
• DoNOT hold onto the needle protection shield
• Disposeoftheneedleinasharps container
• ClosetheIVaccesswiththeend cap,otheradd-ondevicesoradd administration set
• Apply sterile dressing
• Flushthecannula to verify correct placement in the vein
