The school of devotion and charity dedicated to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel gained its official reco-

gnition from the Council of Ten on 22 September 1597, was built its present headquarters (designed by the architects Caustello and Longhena in the 17th century) beside the church belonging to the Carmelite monks. There the confraternity had its initial headquarters and an altar dedicated to the Virgin. The original antique furnishings inside the halls of the school have been entirely preserved. These consist of important oil paintings, rich stucco ceilings and original embroidered and carved wood.

Giambattista Tiepolo painted nine incomparable ceiling canvases In the Chapter Hall between 1739 and 1749, decorating the angles with a series paintings depicting the cardinal and theological virtues and other attributes of the Spirit. All of these images make reference to the Virgin Mary, with angels and cherubim bearing the scapular (the symbol of the devotion), along with the mariegola, the book containing the rules of the confraternity. The rooms of the

archive and of the hotel are also remarkable, where we find the masterpieces of G.B. Piazzetta (Judith and Holofernes) and of Padavonino (The Assumption of the Virgin Mary).

Saturday, February 7 will see the opening of the Gran Teatro of St. Mark’s Square, where the most anxiously-awaited traditional shows take place: the Festa delle Marie, a historical parade of 12 girls in splendid Renaissance costumes and on Sunday, February 8, the Flight of the Angel from the Campanile di San Marco, interpreted by the lucky ‘Maria’ crowned queen of the Carnival for 2015. The week before Lent, from Thursday 12 to Tuesday 17 February, will see an explosion of events, parties and parades: in piazza San Marco, on Sunday, February 15, with the finale of the most beautiful Mask of the Carnival competition, the Flight of the Eagle from the Campanile di San Marco and the

Flying donkey from the Tower of Piazza Ferretto in Mestre. At the Arsenale of Venice, the festival will last well into the night with live music. Mardi Gras is the grand finale, when the Carnival of Venice 2015 will celebrate the glories of San Marco in the Flight of the Lion, the winged lion on the red backdrop of the majestic banner of San Marco, which made the Serenissima Republic immortal in the Mediterranean and in the world.

Music, shows and parties: the Carnival amusement at the ArsenaleBesides the traditional places and appointments, the Arsenale of Venice is opening its

doors for the second year in a row. In an extraordinarily historical and fascinating place, the Carnival of Venice becomes big, very big! The Arsenale robes itself in magic, poetry, music and special sensational effects on water, transforming itself into the “Carnival of the Arsenal”. Evening and night time performances at the Arsenal, with open air, urban fancy dress and costumes, fireworks, water fountain displays, alternated with musical performan-ces, dance and “nouveau cirque” shows at the Tese.

During carnival nights of the 7th, 8th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th February, with the Arsenl as background, there will be light and music plays, and travelling entertainment shows, all in a special program directed by Davide Rampello, a performance with choreography and narration going on stage at the “Darsena Grande”.

10 EXHIBITSThe Peggy Guggenheim Collection celebrates the “Pollock Brothers”

After an absence of more than a year, and following examination, cleaning and conservation, Alchemy

returns to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection to be the focus of a documentary, scientific exhibition: Alchemy by Jackson Pollock. Discovering the Artist at Work (14 February – 6 April 2015), curated by Luciano Pensabene Buemi and Roberto Bellucci. The exhibition reveals to visitors an explosion of color unveiled by the long process of cleaning, which has made possible a dazzling rediscovery of this famous work. Exclusively and only for the duration of the exhibition, Alchemy is viewable without glass or plexiglas, rendering vivid the astonishing relief-like surface of the densely worked image. The visitor is guided through every technical aspect of the conservation project, as if moving inside the layers and materials of the painting itself, exploring Pollock’s working methods and the processes of conservation, with the aid of an enthralling multi-media installation. Video, 3D reproductions, touch-

screens, interactive devices, as well as documentation and original items loaned from Pollock’s studio in Long Island, bring Pollock’s masterpiece to life, with its thickly encrusted paint surface and its palette of no fewer than 19 different pigments. From April 22, through September 14, the museum will be the first European venue for the presentation of Mural (1943, University of Iowa Museum of Art, Iowa City), Jackson Pollock’s largest painting and now considered by some to be the single most important American painting of the 20th century. This privilege acknowledges that Mural was commissioned in the summer of 1943 (and completed by early November the same year) by Peggy Guggenheim for her New York apartment on East 61st Street. David Anfam, leading authority on Abstract Expressionism, is curating this touring exhibition, Jackson Pollock’s Mural: Energy Made Visible, of Jackson Pollock’s Mural following its exhibition first at the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, and then in Sioux City, Iowa. The exhibition offers an interpretation of its subject matter and locates it both in Pollock’s career (James Cuno, director of the J. Paul Getty Museum, recently said: “This painting made a cultural shift in a modern artist who redefined art in the 20th century”) and in the evolution of mural-scale painting in New York in the 1940s. At the same time the Peggy Guggenheim Collection presents the first retrospective dedicated to Charles Pollock, Jackson’s eldest brother. The exhibition documents his full career, with most of the material (art and documents, some of it never before exhibited) being loaned by the Charles Pollock Archive, Paris, thanks to the

artist’s widow and daughter as well as other members of the Pollock family. A small number of works by Jackson Pollock, Thomas Hart Benton and a rare painting by Sanford Pollock will complement Charles’s early years in New York and Washington.

Daily 3.30 pm free guided tours of the temporary exhibitions.

More than 140 extraordinary drawings from one of the most important collections in the world ex-

plore the art and myth of Venice, from the Renaissance to the 19th century. On show will be a host of great masters, from Mantegna, Bellini, Giorgione and Titian to Veronese, Tiepolo, Piazzetta and Canaletto, together with a number of foreign artists who fell in love with the city, including Callow and Sargent.

The exhibition, to March 15th 2015 at Museo Correr in Venice, is organised by the National Gallery of Art of Washington in collaboration with the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia and the contribution of The Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation, is curated by Andrew Robison, Senior Curator of the Drawings and Prints Department of the National Gallery of Art of Washington.

The exhibition opens with the drawings of leading Renaissance masters: Andrea Mantegna, Giovanni Bellini and Vittore Carpaccio, who is represented here also with a Sacra conversazione in a landscape of great lyricism, a significant example of the artist’s work on paper.

This is followed by an extraordinary sheet showing an imagined Oriental emperor, executed by Dürer and then by the drawings of Giorgione, Domenico Campagnola and Gerolamo Romanino. An exhibition of this kind could not fail to include drawings by Lorenzo Lotto and Titian, but it also boasts a magnificent drawing

showing an angel and prophet by Sebastiano del Piombo, which has been acclaimed as one of the artist’s great masterpieces since it first emerged at auction in 1977 and one of the most refined drawings of the Venetian Renaissance. Another key work is the extremely rare coloured chalk drawing by Jacopo Bassano. His Mocking of Christ is one of the most refined of the six drawings dedicated by the artist to the life of Christ. The exhibition continues with admirably fine figure studies and compositions by Jacopo Tintoretto, Paolo Veronese and Palma il Giovane.

The fruitful Venetian 18th century is documented in all its aspects through examples of high quality, most of which never before displayed in Italy. These are counterbalanced by the “character heads” of Giambattista Piazzetta, drawn in chalk: images of a melancholic intimacy and among the first drawings to be perceived as finished works of art in their own right. Also on show are no less than 12 works by Giambattista Tiepolo, a simply imposing selection covering almost the full timespan of his career, documenting every aspect of the artist’s graphic production: compositions in pen, life studies, caricatures, and a special section devoted to landscapes. Here we can admire views of canals, lagoons and palazzi drawn by the leading exponents of Venetian vedute: Francesco Guardi, Bernardo Bellotto and fantastic images by Giovanni Battista Piranesi, of whom the National Gallery of Art of Washington has one of the most important collections in the world. The final part of the exhibition draws us into Venice the myth, the dreamlike vision that has constructed and spread the romantic image of Venice around the world with some attractive drawings by James McNeill Whistler and John Singer Sargent, both of whom friends of Henry James, with whom light becomes poetry.

The exhibition is accompanied by an important and timely catalogue published by Marsilio.

Seasonal opening of the Palazzo Cini Gallery at

San Vio, from 25 April to 15 November 2015 with the support of Assicurazioni Ge-nerali: exhibitions and cultu-ral and educational activities (Art Conversations, lectures, interpretations and guided tours) reflecting the nature of the museum and according to strategies highlighting the special features of the Palazzo Cini collection.

In spring, in concomitance with the Gallery opening, an exhibition devoted to Ettore Spaletti on the second-floor piano nobile will present works specially created by the artist in an intimate and close relationship with the setting.

In autumn, the same second-floor space will host an exhibition of a significant group of drawings from the Giuseppe Fiocco Collection, held by the Institute

of Art History. In 2015 the Guest at the Palace will continue with two more “surprises”. Organised in collaboration with major international institutions (begun last spring with the display of Bronzino’s Young Man with Lute, courtesy of the Uffizi), the series involves welcoming into the

rooms of the Gallery’s permanent collection “guests works” to create a dialogue in terms of form and content with the other works.
