Why Use GUIDED MICROWAVE RADAR?Are you tired of re-calibrating the 0-point on DP transmitters or capacitance probes? Are you tired of having false readings due to angle of repose, or dust during the fill and empty cycle?Operating by the use of electromagnetic microwave pulses, the VEGAFLEX guided microwave radar gauges will provide accuracy up to 3mm! In addition, once initially configured, the gauges will never need to be recalibrated, and will never experience 0 point drift or fluctuations due to specific gravity, temperature, dust, or pressure. This translates into less time spent on set-up, maintenance, and troubleshooting, and results in a worry-free installation that will perform beyond expectation.

Principle ofOPERATIONPULSE The VEGAFLEX emits a microwave pulse at a frequency of 2GHz. This pulse travels down to the product surface and is “guided” by a stainless steel cable or rod. When the pulse hits the surface of the product it is reflected back to the gauge.

TARGET The microwave pulses are reflected from a solid or liquid material. The pulse then returns up the probe to the gauge.

TIME The transit time of the microwave pulse that returns to the antenna is measured and used to calculate the distance to the target.

TYPES OF ANTENNASVEGAFLEX instruments are available with 3 types of antennas; a single rod, a cable, or a coaxial tube. The single rod is for liquids or solids, and is available in two thicknesses. The cable antenna is used for liquids or solids and is suitable for long range applications or measurement of heavier solids. The coaxial antenna is a small rod antenna contained inside an outer tube. This system creates a very efficient antenna and is for use with liquids only. The ability to choose from these antenna styles allows Ohmart/VEGA to customize a VEGAFLEX system to each individual application.

INDUSTRIESGuided Wave Radar Systems can be applied in virtually any industry. The VEGAFLEX excels at measurement in industries such as:

• Chemical• Petrochemical• Water and Wastewater• Pulp and Paper• Plastics

• Power• Food and Beverage• Cement• Asphalt• Marine

• Steel• Mining• And many more!

APPLICATIONSVirtually Unlimited.

Compare Verses Other Technologies: Guided wave radar has many benefits over traditional level measurement technologies. With no moving parts and easy to configure electronics, guided wave radar can eliminate many of the measurement and maintenance issues associated with DP cells, and mechanical float systems. With no influence from temperature or pressure shifts, and no errors caused by a shift in specific gravity, guided wave radar can reduce many of the measurement errors associated with capacitance probes, and ultrasonic based transmitters. In solids, the VEGAFLEX is able to measure during the fill and empty cycles, reducing common errors seen with ultrasonic-based sensors.

INTERFACE: Measure the interface between two liquids, or track both the top level of product and the interface. The VEGAFLEX 67 is able to reliably track interfaces in storage vessels, bridles, and other applications.

GENERAL LIQUIDS: VEGAFLEX is well suited for general liquid measurement. Vessels or tanks that require a 3/4" NPT connection are perfect for the VEGAFLEX.

InterfaceMEASUREMENTThe VEGAFLEX 67 has been developed specifically for interface measurement in liquids. Typical applications are measurements in: oil/water or solvents/water, where the upper product has a lower dielectric constant than the lower product.

Microwave pulses are guided down the antenna where an amount of the energy is reflected from the surface of the upper non-conductive product. The remaining energy passes through the upper product and is reflected from the interface of the two products. The two reflections are then able to be evaluated as level and interface.

Interface Measurement Guidelines:• It is only possible to measure one interface. In case of multiple interfaces

no measurement can be made.• The interface must have separation between the upper and lower product, i.e. no major emulsification or mixing.• The upper product must cover the interface by at least 4 inches for separation of the signals to occur.

Page 11: VEGAFLEX - APPLIED MEASUREMENT AND CONTROL …appliedmc.com/content/images/Vegaflex-60-series.pdf · • Easy Set-up: Typical system set ... • Data collection and transfer via RS232

Product Guidelines:

UPPER PRODUCT• The upper product must not be conductive.• The upper product must have a minimum dielectric constant (rod and cable version 1.7; coaxial version 1.4).• The dielectric constant should remain consistent.• There must be no foam on the surface creating a second interface.

LOWER PRODUCT• The dielectric constant of the lower product should be at least 10 higher than of the upper product (example: upper dielectric constant = 2 / lower dielectric constant = min. 12). The most ideal solution is that the lower product is conductive (e.g. water and water mixtures).

OUTPUT SIGNALVEGAFLEX 67 is available with all electronics (4...20mA/HART®, Profibus PA, Foundation Fieldbus™).

OPTION 1: Evaluation of the current signal (4...20mA)

The 4…20 mA signal of the analog sensor is allocated to the interface. As there is only one analog output signal, there is no indication of the overall level.

OPTION 2: Evaluation of the digital measuring signal (HART®, Profibus, Foundation Fieldbus™)

With digital communication the distance to the interface and the distance to the overall level are both available. Both measuring values can be adjusted in the control system. A VEGAMET 625, or similar multi-variable HART® device or system is required to process these signals. All measured values (level, interface and layer thickness) can then be processed and sent out as 4…20 mA signals.
