Pencil Tool:
Draw a path.Fill of none.
Black 30 pt. stroke.Round endcaps and
joins.

Effect>Stylize>Feather.
Radius: 15 pt.
Appearance Palette:Turn on New Art
MaintainsAppearance.

Drag the fuzzy stroke to the Graphic Styles
Palette.

Pencil Tool:
Make a few strokes.Select different stroke colors to change the
airbrush’s paint bottle.
Change stroke weight to move the airbrush
farther / nearer.
DoubleClick the Feather Effect in the Appearance Palette to adjust the amount of
paint.
Whenever you have a combination of
settings you like and might want to use
again, drag the path to the Graphics Styles
palette to save a collection of nozzles you can recall with a
click.

The Feather effect accomplishes the transparency when
sprayed over existing objects. Black darkens, white
lightens, so these are opaque airbrush inks.
If you want to work with transparent
airbrush dyes, set the Transparency Palette’s
Mode popup to Multiply.
To cut a frisket:
Draw a medium gray shape. (You might
even save a Graphic Style as “Frisket.”
Get the Pencil. Spray an initial stroke or
two onto the object.

Bring the frisket object to the front.
Select everything and Object>ClippingPath>
Make.
Black Pointer:
DoubleClick the clipping mask group to put it in Group
Isolation Mode. Now you can paint right
into the frisket.

Select the frisket shape and give it the desired “underpaint” fill from the Color Palette, Swatches Palette, or Grad.
Get the Pencil—er—airbrush and spray modeling strokes along the
edges of the frisket.
The neat thing about the airbrush strokes
is; they can be adjusted anytime after-the-fact.

In Group Isolation Mode, additional
airbrush strokes are masked by the edges
of the frisket.

While in Group Isolation Mode, draw a new frisket shape
and spray a couple of strokes on it.

Select it and its strokes.
Object>ClippingMask>Make.
Now it’s a frisket on top of a frisket.
DoubleClick it and paint into it until
content.

The nested frisket and its paint can be
AltDragged within the containing frisket to
make duplicates.
This larger frisket now contains three friskets inside it. Any one of them can be painted
into by doubleClicking it.
