VDS MAFRI 2011• Egg Drop Syndrome?

• Rabbit hemorrhagic disease – household with 3 pet rabbits. One died others unaffected. Strain susceptibility

• Goat Abortion Herpesvirus – new introductions, existing ewes high rate of abortion. Typical herpes lesions in liver

• Herpes virus pneumonia zebra

• ILT ongoing in small farm flocks – provincially reportable. Flock destruction and compensation

• Turkey influenza– Low pathogenic avian influenza A H5N2 infection in a turkey breeder flock (~3000

birds) in late November 2010. Oropharyngeal swabs were submitted initially along with lung tissues with a history of some drop in egg production

– Submitted on a Friday when staff sent home due to air quality. Not processed until Monday

– What if high path AI?????

VDS MAFRI 2011• Recent increase in PRRS outbreaks

– PRRS virus, mostly North American field strains, has been detected 9 separate cases in May 2011.

• TGE outbreak in sows in May 2010. Outbreak started in a sow barn and spread to a few nurseries. TGEV was detected by specific PCRs in VDS and Biovet. Outbreak was immediately contained.

• TGE outbreak in a finisher barn in February 2011. Outbreak was immediately contained

 • panH1N1-2009 swine influenza cases. Several cases in 2010 and only 3 cases in

2011 so far. H1N2 swine influenza virus has been detected in two cases recently

• H1N2 - being seen with increasing frequency – developing multiplex PCR to identify strains. Will do Matrix first and if required multiplex for typing.

• Porcine Myelopathy problem – holey spinal cord!

VDS MAFRI 2011• Bovine Anaplasmosis, - also Increasing recognition A. Phagocytophila in dogs. 6

herds with Mycoplasma suis and one PCR positive Mycoplasma ovis sheep flock – – emerging hemoparasites due to climate instability???

• Increased case of liver flukes – all ruminants – study with CVO• Liver fluke in bovine fetal liver – focal hepatic necrosis with fluke puke and fluke eggs.  • Injectable Se overdose in neonatal small ruminants – focal myocardial fibrosis and

mineralization– High liver Se levels.

• S. zooepidemicus pneumonia outbreak in barn cats

• Septicemic P. multocida Type B in sheep

• Iridovirus-like Agent Sturgeon ( confirmed on EM in 2010)

• Lawsonia enteritis in horse

Egg Drop Syndrome?• 6 flocks affected• 20 – 30% production drop

– Decreased egg #s, no shell, soft shell• No change food or water intake• Duration < 14 days• Peaks @ 8 days• Any stage of production

• One case with 10% decrease production– Associated with low dietary salt

• Ongoing disease investigation with CVO office– All test negative for infectious agents including duck adenovirus

Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease• Household with 3 pet rabbits• Most recent introduced 1 year ago• Rescue rabbit, source unknown• Died others unaffected • Strain susceptibility• Diagnostic pathologists will always be

needed

“Sick Building Syndrome”• Aug with intermittent sewer gas odour.

– Program issue (?)– Abandoned sewer pipes not capped

• Nov 16 – significant episode of respiratory discomfort by all Clin Path staff

• IAQ testing, building ventilation assessment, Occupational health physician

• June 3 – remedial work imminent• One affected laboratory – impact on ACHSN
