Overview of 2-D & 3-D in graphic design

In this lecture, we look at the foundations of what all designers should be aware of, especially from a base point of view.

A young designer these days is best friends with theircomputer and software, and that makes sense when you look at the number of possible pathways print, illustration, packaging, web design, animation and post-production in both 2D and 3D.

However we need to establish some basic fundamentals before we jump into that stage, and in that case lets look at 2D & 3D mediums that all designers in effect really need to look at.

Being able to use a range of 2D media, materials and techniques Using 2D media, work with a broad selection of techniques/ processes, for example:

• Drawing

• Painting

• Print- making

• Textiles

• Digital

• Collage / Montage

• Lens based

DrawingAlison LambertLambert usually works from more than one model, and gets ideas from photographs she has taken or found that in some way resonate with the mood or emotion she intuitively grasps as her theme. In the effort to bring her initially rather vague mental image into full manifestation, she draws over areas of the face or figure many times, rub-bing out passages and redrawing until she must resort to affixing small strips of fresh paper to the surface. The process continues--redrawing, ripping, scraping, and lay-ering--creating an almost sculptural surface of frayed, stratified paper covered with shadings of black and gray.

PaintingLucian FreudFreud’s practice to begin a painting was first drawing in charcoal on the canvas. He then applied paint to a small area of the canvas, and gradually worked outward from that point. For a new sitter, he often started with the head as a means of “getting to know”

Print Making Jim DineHis work draws significantly from Abstract Expressionism and Dada assemblage and collage techniques. But Dine’s association with Pop Art is problematic, and the artist prefers to emphasize the hands-on, gestural, and expressive in his work, rather than the mechanical and impersonal characteristics of Pop Art.

TextilesAlice KettleUseing machine embroidery and producing works the size of tapestries, exploiting the textures and effects made possible through the harnessing of a mechanical process to intuitive and creative ends. Some are reminiscent works which reference mythology and story telling, using the line of thread to connect relationships and define emotions such as suffering, hope and renewal. The figures which inhabit the work explore relationships, as do the threads, one placed next to or on top of another. The fabric and the image held together by stitch.

Collage /montageWangehi Mutu

Mutu constructs sources her collage images range from a variety of media, including commercial fashion and lifestyle pornography, and automobile and motorcycle magazines. These distorted yet elegant figures that Mutu creates are based on the concept that, “Females carry the marks, language and nuances of their culture more than the male. Anything that is desired or despised is always placed on the female body.”

CameraMany Ray

Repeated images; low angle or ground camera shots; distortion of camera focus; and he always starts with a central figure or object and comes back to.

Signage design- Scale / Alot of clients will need you to work external, and scale is one factor, knowing where your design will be seen is a key factor as well as scale factor. - Directions / instructional The function of each piece has been positioned so that each message can be clear.

- Inside & outside / Most signage will be on the exterior or interior of its facade.

- Clients details / logo placement / colour requirements

Exhibition design

- Clients space / Each presenter in a exhibtion as an allocated space, this space and direction can really effect the outcomeof a confrence.

- Clients details / logo placement / colour requirements / all ofthese details must be address in regards to sizing, printing and application.

- Cients marketing materials / On all exhibition stands there are printed materials, with bags etc...

Sustainabledesign

- Printing / Ink has alot of pressure on end costing, make sure your costings and paper have good eco ending outcomes. - Packing / More and more desingers msut look at new ways of packaginga client with eco outcomes, more eco viable overall.

- Reusable / In this day and age, we are required to think alwasy about all design to be reused in all methods.

- New methods / From printing to packaging to time schedlues many new ideas are needed to save timeand energy.

- Clients details / logo placement / colour requirements

Informationdesign

- Location / Informative signage can only really be at its most effective when placed in the most productive area.

- Directions / instructional / How to use, How to depose, Where to go, How far , How to get there, How long.

- Fonts / Localized languages really instigate the choice of clear font that can communicate from a sign that can be best used in lower case and upper case.

- Clients details / logo placement / colour requirements / required informationfor placement
