Colourstringsvcm.bc.ca/colourstringsBirth - 5 yearsSing! Move! Create! Colourstrings is an innovative, child-friendly approach to music education based on Kodály, Orff and Dalcroze principles. Music skills are developed through a variety of multi- sensory activities – singing, playing instruments, improvising, listening, and creative movement. Children progress from playing with a steady beat and singing in tune and gradually learn how to read rhythmic notation and notes on the staff. These age-specific, multi-sensory, playful classes will inspire your child while building a solid musical foundation and a lifetime love of music! The Colourstrings song books ensure seamless continuity between class and home. Songbooks are required for the 3-5 year classes and are available for purchase from the VCM. Suzuki violin tuitions include 16 30- or 45- minute lessons at Fee Group 2 ($56.50/h), 14 group classes per term, plus parent classes approximately every 8 weeks. NEW! Children’s Music Journeyvcm.bc.ca/music-journey4 - 5 yearsAlready in use by over 80,000 children worldwide, this unique and successful software-assisted music education program, offered for the first time on Vancouver Island, uses a cutting-edge approach to teaching children about the fundamentals of music, while developing music keyboard skills and the ability to be creative using music technology.

Students create and record music right from their very first lesson. The lessons themselves are presented by famous composers and performers brought to life through computer animation. Practicing is fun with the animated (and intuitive!) practice assistant. After practice comes more fun with interactive and educational music video games. Musical concepts learned are further reinforced through singing and movement games - learning about music couldn’t be more fun!Andrea Cave

Kelly Kirby Piano Method 4 - 6 yearsThis simple, fun approach to music is designed to capture the imagination of the young child. Ear-training, sight-reading, and piano playing are taught from the very first lesson. Singing, colouring, and crafts are incorporated into this note-reading method to compliment musical elements. Kelly Kirby is offered as private or semi-private lessons. Stella Barbon, Roger Buksa, Erin Fisher, Nicole Lavallée, Linda Low

Individual InstructionPrivate lessons may be taken individually or shared among 2 or 3 students. Lessons range in price from $56.50 to $77.00 per hour and in duration from 15 to 60 minutes per week. The following are just a few of our individual lesson offerings – those methodologies tailored specifically to young children.

Lessons aren’t just for children - we offer individual lessons in a variety of genres on just about every instrument. Shared lessons are a great way for parents and children or siblings to learn together! For a complete description of lesson options, refer to the Individual Instruction section (page 10).

Suzuki Piano 3 - 5 yearsBased on the philosophy of Dr. Shinichi Suzuki - the “mother tongue” method - that talent is not inborn, it has to be cultivated within a supportive environment.Children learn to play by ear through repeated listening and immersion in a musical environment. Note-reading is taught once the ear is sufficiently developed and piano technique is secure. Parents attend each lesson with their child, assist in daily practice, and play the Suzuki CD at home. Individual instruction

10

Individual InstructionPrivate instruction is one of the most popular things we offer. Regardless of your age, level, or instrument, we can find you a teacher that will inspire you to find your individual creative voice. With approximately 120 faculty members, the VCM will have you playing your best in no time!

The first step to beginning your individual lessons at the VCM is to tell us a bit about yourself and your musical goals. To do this, we ask that you fill out a referral form. It takes about five minutes to complete the form, which you can do online at vcm.bc.ca/student-referral-form, by phone, or in person. We’ll ask you some basic information, including your contact details, availability, musical experience and the instrument you are hoping to study. This will help us to match you with the teacher who is best suited to your individual needs. Your new teacher will contact you to arrange a short interview or “trial” lesson.

vcm.bc.ca/prospective-students

TuitionIndividual lessons fall into four Fee Groups, ranging from $51.50 to $77.00 per hour, depending on the instructor.

While our academic terms begin in September and late January respectively, you may begin lessons at any time throughout the year. Lessons are also available through the summer.

Individual Instruction

Shared and Group LessonAnother option for those interested in learning to play an instrument is shared or group lessons. A shared lesson is attended by 2 or 3 students together, and the cost is equally divided among them. Founded in 2006, the Collegium provides an enriched curriculum to talented, motivated, teenage classical musicians. The Collegium is a lively community of young musicians who are prepared to devote the time necessary to develop their musical talents and abilities.

There are three categories of membership - all are open to singers, pianists and other instrumentalists. Students audition for the Collegium, and if accepted are placed in the appropriate category for their age and performance level.

Full members are usually between the ages of 13 and 18, and have reached a level of notable proficiency on their instrument: generally Grade 9 or above. They participate in a busy schedule of masterclasses, coachings, seminars, performances, and residencies by distinguished guest artists.

Associate members are students who, though they may be performing at an advanced level, cannot commit to the time required for full membership. They generally participate only in the chamber music component of the Collegium.

Junior members are those students who show promise and dedication, but who are not yet at an age or performance level that qualifies them for either Full or Associate membership.

New and continuing Collegium students are chosen annually by auditions held in May, and again in December if spaces are available.

Tuition feesThe VCM is committed to making this special program available to students who can most benefit from it. To do that, we offset the true cost of Collegium study - in the case of full members by over 50% - through donations from private donors, foundations, corporations, and financial support from the VCM itself.

Full membership: $2,500 per termIn addition to a $1,268 subsidy, every Collegium student accepted for full membership receives a scholarship of $500 per term, resulting in a net tuition of $1,232 per term. • 16 one-hour lessons per term • Weekly chamber music rehearsals and coaching • Regular masterclasses with local and visiting musicians (accompanist provided)• Soundings: occasional seminars led by invited guests where aspects of music are discussed • Performance opportunities at the VCM and elsewhere • Credit of $100 per term towards theory, history, or composition instruction taken at

the VCM. Course expenses beyond $100 are paid by the student.• String players and singers pay an addition (subsidized) fee of $80 per term and receive a

scheduled one-half hour session with their assigned accompanist once every two weeks.

Associate Membership: $385 per termThe fee paid by Associate members covers a portion of the cost of their chamber music instruction. Associate members are welcome and encouraged to attend all regular Collegium activities as auditors.

Junior Membership: $385 per termThe fee paid by Junior members covers weekly chamber music coaching, membership in a VCM orchestra or choir; group theory instruction; and masterclasses. This represents a discount over purchasing those courses separately. Junior members are welcome and encouraged to attend all regular Collegium activities as auditors and occasional participants.

In the short time since its creation in 2009, the New Orford String Quartet has seen astonishing

success, giving annual concerts at the Orford Arts Centre for national CBC broadcast and receiving unanimous critical acclaim, including two Opus Awards for Concert of the Year.

Hailed for their “ravishingly beautiful tone” as well as their “extraordinary technical skills and musicianship” the members of the New Orford String Quartet are all principal players in the Montreal and Toronto Symphony Orchestras.

Thursday, February 20 20147:30pm • Alix Goolden HallConcertmaster of the Victoria Symphony, Canadian virtuoso Terence Tam is an active chamber musician

whose performances have been heard at major music festivals around the world. The Times Colonist has praised “...Tam performed with fire and lyric power, and drew high drama from the plentiful technical hurdles of his part.”

Critically acclaimed pianist Lorraine Min has impressed audiences worldwide with her artistic brilliance and virtuosity. Cited by the New York Times for her “impeccable phrase-shaping” and “crystalline sound,” Min’s pianism continues to inspire with its indelible musicality and finesse.

AdvantageMasterclassesWhat is a masterclass?

A masterclass is a seminar for music students conducted by a master musician or clinician. Classes focus on repertoire, technique, and performance skills. Typically each student who attends plays a performance-ready piece and, in turn, listens while others play. The “master” will offer advice and guidance to the performer and to the group as a whole, often focusing on one or two performance aspects.

Masterclasses offer students the opportunity to learn from other VCM instructors, special guests, and each other. In addition to regular masterclasses in each department offered by a rotating roster of VCM faculty, past guests have included Jamie Parker, James Ehnes, Pepe Romero, Daniel Taylor, and many more.

Regular masterclasses are offered in the following disciplines:

Jazz

Piano

Orchestral Strings

Classical Guitar

Voice

Winds, Brass & Percussion

Music Therapy

Music Therapyvcm.bc.ca/music-therapy

Music TherapyMusic Therapy is the skilful use of music as a therapeutic tool to restore, maintain, and improve mental, physical, and emotional health. The nonverbal, creative, and affective nature of music facilitates contact, learning, self-expression, communication, and growth.

VCM Music Therapy sessions meet the needs of children as young as 18 months old to the elderly; those of all ages with exceptionalities, conditions, or illnesses, and improve the quality of life for all. Sessions may take place in the VCM Music Therapy studios or in such facilities as hospitals, group homes, long-term care and independent living facilities, hospice, geriatric care facilities, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, and schools. Children, adolescents, adults, and elderly with the following may benefit from Music Therapy:• Mental challenges• Physical challenges • Autism Spectrum Disorders• Sensory impairments• Learning difficulties• Brain injuries• Conduct and/or behavioural

disorders• Recovery of Mental Health

from Troubling Life Events, Substance Use, and “Illness”

• Strokes/Alzheimer’s/Dementia• Palliative care

Musical activities are carefully designed to meet individuals’ needs and achieve therapeutic outcomes. Following are examples of how Music Therapy can help: • Singing improves communication, speech and language skills, articulation, breath control,

expression, and reception;• Playing instruments increases Gross and Fine motor skills such as dexterity, coordination,

balance, range of motion, strength, as well as social skills like active participation and interction, self-esteem, and cooperation;

• Rhythmic Movements and Dancing facilitates mobility, agility, balance, respiration patterns, muscular relaxation, spatial relationships, and endurance;

• Improvising offers a creative and nonverbal means to expressing feelings. Through vocal, instrumental and/or movement improvisation, one has the opportunity to make choices and deal with structure in a creative way;

• Composing develops cooperation, learning & sharing ideas and experiences, and increases social skills; and,

• Active Listening activities provide a stimulating way to develop cognitive skills such as attention, memory, and auditory perception skills.

“Music has such a strong presence in everyone’s life. No wonder using music as a therapy can have such a powerful impact. Music facilitates expression and learning, instils respect and pride, provides wellness, gives courage and offers pure abandon. It is indeed a little bit like magic.” - Dr. Johanne Brodeur

Course SelectionIf you or your child plans to register for individual lessons for the first time, you may register for single “trial” lesson with no obligation to register for more classes. Prospective students also may audit one group class session per semester before committing to the remaining classes. In order to receive a refund, trial lessons must be cancelled with 24 hours notice.

Individual Lessons Students typically have one lesson per week for 36 weeks (2 terms) from September to June (unless alternate arrangements are made directly with the instructor). Students may begin individual lessons at any time during the academic year.

Students will be referred to an appropriate instructor based on: musical background, goals, availability of lessons, and fee options. Contact us or visit our website to facilitate the referral process. Students may request lessons with a specific instructor, though the VCM cannot guarantee availability. Once an instructor is assigned, the instructor will contact the student/parent to make arrangements for lessons.

Group Classes & Ensembles Most group classes are full-year courses that run for 32 or 34 weeks (2 terms) from September to May. Adult Continuing Education classes follow the same terms as other group classes, but are often broken out into 8-, 10-, or 16-week modules. Students in group classes typically begin their studies in September. Classes fill up quickly – please register no later than one week prior to the start date. If space permits and the instructor agrees, a student may join a class already in progress. Transaction FeesNew for 2013-14, we have eliminated all registration fees, opting instead for a small per transaction fee of $2.00. Transaction fees will be charged once per receipt; yearly registration is encouraged.

Course Resource Fee and Music Rental FeeStudents are responsible for additional costs for music and books. For some courses a resource fee is due at the time of registration, which covers the cost of handouts, music, or supplies provided by the instructor. For other courses, such as ensembles, choirs, and orchestras, a music rental fee is due at registration to cover the cost of scores and parts. These fees are included in class descriptions.

VERY IMPORTANT: Instructors are directly dependent upon timely student payments. If payment is not received, the instructor is not paid. Your cooperation is appreciated.

Other Fees:Returned Cheque $20.00 charged for any cheque refused for any reason by the bank. Subsequent payment can only be made by certified cheque, credit card, debit card, money order, or cash.Refund Processing Fee $25.00Late Fees* $10.00 per month * Tuition is due by September 15th for Term 1 and January 15 for Term 2.

Mid-term registrations require immediate payment.

PaymentPayment is required in full at the time of registration for the current term. A payment plan is available. If the payment plan is chosen, the balance is paid over equal monthly instalments by post-dated cheque or pre-authorized debit. Payments are due on the 15th of each month, beginning with the first month of enrolment and continuing through the end of term. Payments are divided equally among the number of months for which the student is registered. Transaction fees will be charged based on the number of payments selected.

Credit Card PolicyAs of September 2010, the VCM no longer accepts credit card payments for individual lesson tuition. Credit cards will continue to be accepted for group classes, concert tickets, donations, and other fees.

Tuition Fee Tax DeductionsRevenue Canada stipulates that tuition may be deducted if all of the following apply:• Students are studying at the RCM/VCM Grade 9 level or higher • Course fees in any calendar year exceed $100• The lessons develop the student’s skills in an occupation OR• Your child is under 16 years of age and his/her program of study fulfills the criteria for the

Children’s Arts Tax Credit programPlease visit www.cra-arc.gc.ca for more information. Eligible students may request a tax letter from the VCM after February 15 of each year for the previous tax year.

Registration, Refund and Withdrawal Policies

The Fine Print

Cancellation PolicyIf a student cancels a private lesson with reasonable notice, the instructor may wish to arrange a make-up lesson, pending the instructor’s schedule and the availability of studio space. The instructor is, however, under no obligation to make up the lesson, particularly if insufficient notice (under 24 hours) is given. Students are expected to be present for all scheduled lessons. This includes vacations, school/sport events, etc.

If an instructor cancels, they are obliged to make up the lesson. The VCM reserves the right to cancel, postpone, or combine classes and to limit registration or change instructors. Should insufficient registration cause the cancellation of a class, fees will be refunded or the student may transfer to another course if room is available.

Refunds & WithdrawalsThere are NO refunds for ensembles or group classes, except in cases of illness/injury accompanied by a doctor’s note, as their viability is based on minimum enrolments. These programs are based on a sequential curriculum that does not allow for continuous intake, therefore the space cannot be refilled if a student withdraws mid-term.

Because instructors must commit to a schedule and book a studio space, refunds for individual lessons are permitted only in cases of illness or injury (for which a doctor’s note is required) or in exceptional circumstances, such as an unexpected family relocation. All withdrawal requests must be submitted in writing or by email to the Registrar’s Office. Withdrawal requests must be made in a timely fashion and within the term to which they apply. Requests for retroactive refunds received more than one month after the cessation of attendance at lessons will not be considered. Refunds will be processed according to the following schedule and are subject to a $25 processing fee:

One week before the first lesson 100% During the first two weeks 75% During the third week 50%During the fourth week 25%After the fourth week No Refund

TransfersThe VCM encourages students to remain with the same teacher throughout the term for which they have registered. However, in exceptional circumstances, transfers may be requested through the Registrar’s Office. The Registrar will consult with the Dean and respective Department Head on a case-by-case basis. The VCM does not guarantee transfer to a different teacher, but every effort will be made to ensure students are placed appropriately with an instructor that meets their individual needs.

Statutory HolidaysIndividual lessons that fall on statutory holidays have been included in the 36-week term. Because the office and building are often closed on these days, an alternate lesson time should be arranged for those weeks. Please verify your lesson schedule with your teacher.

Please Note:The calendar is published before the beginning of the academic year, and while every attempt has been made to ensure its accuracy, the information within is subject to change. The VCM reserves the right to alter or cancel classes at any time, in cases of insufficient enrolment, instructor absence, etc. Group class and ensemble meetings that are cancelled as the result of inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances will not be re-scheduled; private lessons cancelled for such reasons may be made up at the instructor’s discretion.
