On the last Sunday of the month, animal fans can fi nd the VBAS at the Burbank Town Center mall. On February 28th, the special guests were Cinnamon, Petey, and Olivia, all available dogs from the Burbank Animal Shelter. Leigh Marek, a 4-year volunteer, coordinated the event which was attended by fi ve VBAS volunteers as well as one of our esteemed cohorts from the Burbank Animal Shelter to encourage adoptions on-site. “What I fi nd most reward-ing is talking to the public about our wonderful dogs and sharing information about the Burbank Animal Shelter. Of course, it

warms my heart to see the dogs having such a great time being petted and receiving so much attention from everyone who stops by,” said Marek.

In partnership with Best Friends Animal Society, the VBAS hosted “The One” pro-motional event in early Feb-ruary 2016 at the Burbank Animal Shelter. The $14 adoption event encouraged potential adopters to fi nd “The One” for Valentine’s Day. Adoption counselors such as Steve Spears and Jason Brad-ford made themselves available during the promotion to help with the increased public interest. “The spe-cials lead to really good adoptions,” said Spears, who came in on both weekend days to help. As a result of the promotion, a total of 13 dogs and 26 cats found their forever homes.

The VBAS joined Nickelodeon Animation Studio in Burbank for their first ever dog adoption event. Along with other local rescue organizations, the VBAS was able to introduce several great dogs to some happy staffers who were glad for a fur-ry work break during their day. There was a lot of interest shown in many of the animals from all groups, and everyone had a great time. Hopefully, this will become an annual event for many years to come.

“I love how shapes and geometry can completely transform a person’s look. Some-thing simple like fringe or a side parting can really bring out the features in some-one’s face,” says Stephanie Ramirez, a hair stylist at Crowning Glory Salon in Bur-bank. Ramirez recently put her hair design skills to work for the VBAS during a fundraiser she planned herself called Cuts for Mutts.

During the one-day event each client got a shampoo, hair cut, and style. At the end of the day each client walked out looking her best, and Ramirez proudly raised $450 for the VBAS. “It was also a great opportunity to meet new clients,” Ramirez said. “As a matter of fact, two people have been back to our salon for color. I can’t wait to have another fundraiser.”

Ramirez credits her own pets with giving her the inspi-ration to help other animals in need. “My pets are both rescue dogs and the funny thing is that they are the ones who rescued me. I cannot imagine my life without them in it. Zombie and Frida are from two different shelters, but they literally cannot live without each other. This may sound silly but the love that I get from them motivates me to be a better person. I can see it in their eyes that they are grateful that they are no longer without a home. I would like for other animals to have the same chance in a loving home like my pets do.”

It is no secret that the VBAS does some pretty great things for the animals that fi nd their way to the shelter. What might be less known, and certainly not always recognized, is the hard work that the Development Team puts in to raise the funds needed for basic items like medical treatments, food, carriers, and kennels.

While making phone calls, sending emails, and arranging face-to-face meetings to ask for money is not always fun or glamorous, it is an absolute necessity. While each and every volunteer is important to the success of the shelter, the Development Team is essentially the backbone of the volunteer network that makes almost everything possible.

Networking and leveraging relationships in the community aid in making a change. One example of this is a recent donation from Traditional Equitation School. TES is a 72-acre horse boarding facility and show ground located in Burbank that provides a safe and friendly riding atmosphere for horses and students alike.

The Traditional Equitation School held a fundraiser in January to benefi t the Burbank Ani-mal Shelter and raised an amazing $850! By communicating with the VBAS Development Team, ETS was able to make the most of their donation by fulfi lling item requests from the VBAS’ Amazon wish lists. While items can be purchased and shipped to the shelter, ETS opted for a donation of an Amazon gift card, which will be used to purchase high priority items, including KMR, kitten and puppy food, bottles, and warming discs.

A huge thank you goes out to Traditional Equitation School for hosting their own fundraiser and making such a generous donation, and to our Development Team for all of their hard work and continued dedication. If you are interested in becoming a part of the Develop-ment Team, please contact Molly Stretten at [email protected].

How long have you fostered puppies?I am a veteran volunteer. I’ve fostered for about 9 years through the VBAS. When I was little, my parents fostered and ran a rescue for cats, dogs, and chickens.

What is your favorite memory with your most recent group of foster puppies? Our last set of puppies were two cute sisters. We named them Rizzo and Sandy. They were the first foster puppies we’ve had since our son was born. They were gentle and affectionate with him, and we loved that.

What is a typical day with puppies like? First thing in the morning we take the puppies out to the backyard, change the wee-wee pads, and prepare their breakfast. Throughout the day, they get supervised play-time outdoors and cuddling time indoors. Snack time is EVERY puppy’s favorite time, and we used this and treats to train them for about ten minutes daily.

What advice would you give to people interested in fostering puppies? Who can they contact if they want to help?Fostering is definitely not easy, but it is necessary and can be really rewarding. I’ve learned so much from fostering puppies, from responsibility and perseverance to car-ing and patience. Contact your local shelter or rescue group and ask about their foster program. If they don’t have one, you might be able to start one!

Scratching PostThe by Alexis Cole

Wendy Davis is best known to the world as Col. Joan Burton from Army Wives, a Lifetime Channel hit series. At the VBAS, we know Davis best as an animal lover and barn cat adopter.

Recently, Wendy decided she wanted an opportunity to give back, to help an animal that wouldn’t normally be adopted. She discovered the VBAS spon-sored a barn cat program and decided to contact us, eventually adopting Pixie. “I’m ok with Pixie not being the typical pet who pays attention to me in the way a typical pet would,” Davis shared. “She gets to have a home, hunt and see how she becomes part of our ‘farm.’”

Bonnie Caul, a longtime VBAS volunteer, met with Davis to assess where they would be able to house Pixie, Davis’s newly adopted barn cat, during her first few weeks with Davis. Confining barn cats to one location is recom-mended for the first few weeks after adoption to ensure they will stay close to their new home. Not finding a readily available spot, Caul got to work on a solution. That solution? Build a portable house for Pixie that could be re-used for future barn cats.

Fellow VBAS volunteer Tim Williams put his carpentry skills to use to build the temporary housing. Pixie’s new home came equipped with a detach-

able side wall, a weatherproof roof, and a pal-let foundation to keep her safe from the ele-ments. Inside the house, Pixie has all her feline necessities.

VBAS board member Chris de Zorzi round-ed out the team that worked to make sure that

Pixie had a successful re-homing. From Davis’s perspective, he and the rest of the team went above and beyond to bring her and Pixie together. “I am impressed with the level of commitment the volunteers had to find a home for Pixie,” she said.

The VBAS Barn Cat program was created to give unsocialized outdoor cats a second chance. Without barn cat adopters, these cats would have nowhere else to go. Plus, barn cats are excellent at keeping mice and other unwanted critters at bay! If you have a home or business that can support a barn cat, contact the VBAS at [email protected] at [email protected].
