    Another artist working with paper but with an alternative methodology and goal is Wei Jia whouses collage. Weis works with p aper relate to calligraphy with which he embellishes his workssuraces as well as its layers to explore his cultural roots. Wei incorporates both the purposeul andaccidental eects o his paper and paints within its layers, either calligraphic text with meaning

    or lettering or its own sake. Oten, these pages contain his very own poems rom which he isinspired to do the calligraphy. Ater Chinese custom Wei was trained at an early age in traditionalpainting using ink and paper, poetry and calligraphy. The Four Gentlemanly Accomplishmentsmusic, art, scholarship and games o skill is a Chinese theme that holds calligraphy close to its coreand crosses the boundaries between art and scholarship. Weis paper palimpsests are made withxuan paper that has been painted or that contains calligraphy that he usually tears in long stripsbeore adhering them to the layered surace. The multiple layers pulsate through to the suracecreating an uneven surace suggesting much hidden content. Weis process involves incorporatingthe accident much like the Surrealists who delighted in serendipitous encounters. But, Wei alsoengages with the idea o chance that relates to Dada art and specifcally to Hans Arps Collage
