MOUNTAIN SPORTS

VAUDE’s roots are in mountain sports.

We share our passion for high altitude,

summer thunderstorms and snowstorms

with many mountain sport fans. For all

types of mountain sports – from alpine

tours to climbing and hiking, you are

ready for anything the mountains demand

of you with VAUDE products.

The Austrian mountain guide, Stephan Keck, belongs

to the VAUDE Alpine Team. He is constantly setting

out for new destinations and is comfortable anywhere

where the conditions are extreme – be it alpine

climbing, mountain climbing at high altitudes or on

skis in winter. Our Product Development Team has

profi ted from his experiences for over 9 years now.

You are always venturing out for new destinations and summits.

What motivates you?

The mountains give me a kind of freedom that’s diffi cult to fi nd in today’s

society. On my mountains I feel free from restraints and ties. I can set my

own limits and push them as far as possible.

Nature is fascinating and, at the same time, an unpredictable force.

What extremes have you experienced on your tours?

Once I was on a solo tour in a snowstorm. Learning to overcome fear and

allow myself to move with nature instead of against it has been the most

powerful experience I’ve had. But the indescribable feeling of the ski down

after climbing Mount Everest is a close second.

I’m sure you’ve already planned your next adventure.

What’s your next destination?

I’m setting out to fi nish my “Crossing the Seven Summits” project. It involves

climbing the seven highest mountains on all seven continents, and getting to

know and absorb the surroundings and characteristics of each mountain.

Is there always a moment in which you feel rewarded for your venture?

Being able to experience foreign regions and cultures is something that

makes all my efforts worthwhile.

Where else would you like to venture to explore?

I would like to traverse the Amazon together with my family by foot and raft,

coming as close to nature as possible. From the Amazon’s source in Bolivia

to the where the river meets the ocean in Brazil.

3.1. 2.

The mountain knows no compromises. Neither do we. Mountains are the reason why VAUDE exists.

Rooted deep in the world of mountain sports,

VAUDE never forgets its origins: it all began

with ropes and backpacks which the pas-

sionate mountaineer, Albrecht von Dewitz,

introduced to the market in 1974 when he

founded the company.

Today we still set our standards by the moun-

tains. The pounding heart of the climb and

the peace and quiet at the summit spur us on.

Mountains enrich us with great experiences

and always impress us with something new.

They communicate a profound respect for

nature: those who conquer a mountain usually

return changed.

The VAUDE Team shares this passion for

nature and the mountains. Our enthusiastic

product developers work hand-in-hand with

a team of experts comprised of professional

athletes, mountain guides, as well as sport

and altitude specialists. This is how we are

able to guarantee optimal quality and safety

without compromise.

Sometimes venturing out means simply waiting.

Waiting for Godot:

Extreme climber, Hans-Jörg Auer, known for his

free-solo ascent from “Path through the fi sh“

(Marmolada, Dolomites) is waiting for good

conditions before his fi rst ascent on his route of

the same name on the Torres del Paine.

Follow along with him on his tour:

Or just photograph the QR code with

your smartphone and experience

the world of VAUDE online.

Centro Alpino in El Chalten at the foot of Cerro Torre Hans-Jörg Auer and Much Mayr in front

of the face of the Torres del Paine

There are some ventures you have to tackle in stages: such as an expedition

to the granite towers of Patagonia, where weather conditions determine

mountain climbers’ success or failure like no other region in the world. At the

foot of the granite giants Cerro Torre and Fitz Roy, VAUDE supports the Centro

Alpino – a meeting place for climbers from all over the world.

In bad weather, the Centro offers waiting climbers comfortable overnight lodging

and plenty of options for waiting out the weather with its small café, an alpine

library, a topo collection and a boulder room. International top athletes

depart from here on their adventurous ascents of Fitz Roy, Cerro Torre and

the other mountains in Patagonia. The unique Patagonian landscape and

nature exude a deep fascination. We have already equipped several climbing

expeditions in this area, so, it’s very important to us to be present on-site.

Repeat winner of the World Cup, Kilian Fischhuber,

along with two-time World Champion and repeated

World Cup winner, Angela Eiter, are among the

world’s best climbers and boulderers. They both

have been members of the VAUDE Climbing Team

for years.

You have pretty much achieved everything already, and yet you both still

venture out time and again. Where do you fi nd your motivation?

Kilian: What pushes me to set out on new adventures is the feeling that

I still haven’t reached my limits. I’m driven to fi nd my limits and that’s

why I keep climbing further – on the rock and at the World Cup.

Angela: I am always searching for new challenges. It doesn’t allow me

to sit still. It drives me to the rock, because I’m only able to fi nd the

challenge I need when climbing.

Since you are both sitting relatively still, can we assume the next venture

is imminent?

Angela: Yes, of course. The World Championship in Arco (Italy) is com-

ing up and I want to win. On top of that, there are numerous World Cup

events. And I, of course, want to push my limits in rock climbing even

further.

Kilian: I’m looking forward to participating in the Boulder World Cup

again in 2011, and I’m motivated to win. And, of course, like Angy, the

World Championship in Arco is an important goal for me. I’ve never

been World Champion or European Champion and this competition is

becoming more fi erce and challenging every year. And that is exactly

my thing.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done?

Kilian: If you consider bungee jumping and skeleton racing crazy, than

those two are it. Personally, I fi nd it crazier not to go rock climbing

when the air is crisp and the sky is blue.

Angela: When I’m climbing I am sure that nothing is crazy. What’s crazy

to me are the things I can’t do. Like when I’m skiing and posing a threat

to myself and others, that’s when a lot of people probably think “who is

that crazy person?”

Is there anything for which you would drop everything and take off

immediately?

Kilian: Yes, if someone told me they’d show me a lion with a crocodile

in its mouth that is in the process of eating a hyena and so on, I would

even abandon a climb for that. But until then I will only take off for a

good rockface.

Angela: I am drawn to the many climbing areas that I don’t know yet.

Describe your feelings when you’re climbing. What drives you to go there?

Kilian: Fun, friends, nature. And the feeling of extreme concentration

and tension combined with dynamics and strength. And the sheer joy

when I’m standing on top.

Angela: Motivation and fun, the mental strength, victory over inner

weaknesses, conquering fear. Those are perhaps the most important

feelings that spur me on.

What is the one moment that rewards you for your venture?

Kilian: The moment when it’s clear – you can do it.

Angela: When I reach my goal.

Climbing gets you out closer to nature than just about anything else. Either

as part of a rope team or on your own and without extensive gear on a via

ferrata route. On via ferrata routes in the Alps, experienced climbers and

Alpinists alike can enjoy spectacular views and challenging routes without

needing their own equipment. This is reason enough for VAUDE to support

and maintain a via ferrata route: the “Schmugglersteig”, which offers differ-

ent levels of diffi culty on the mountain that leads to the Gargellner Köpfe,

Montafon, Austria. The route was given the name because it was often used

by smugglers in the past.

Via Ferrata Routes: Vertical Adventure.

A total of 900 m steel rope and about 100 steps make a whole lot of mountain

adventure possible. Experienced mountain climbers, beginners and families

alike all enjoy the two different routes on the Schmugglersteig. The more

challenging alternative integrates two round 20 m long rope bridges and

two vertical walls with ladders. Whoever ventures to the summit is rewarded

with a breathtaking 360° panorama view of the Silvretta, the Rätikon and

the Arlberg.

Backpacks: Volume and suspension systems should match the activity

planned. For a day hike, a 20 l pack with an Aerofl ex suspension system will

suffi ce. A tour lasting several days requires a sturdy load hauler with a 30 l

to 60 l capacity and a Tergolight suspension system.

Sleeping bags: Down weighs less, packs down smaller and offers a better

micro-climate for sleeping than synthetic fi ll. However, down is affected

more by moisture. That is why we recommend down for cold regions and

extreme mountain adventures, and synthetic fi ll for camping, trekking tours

and traveling.

Tents: The shape of the tent determines what kind of conditions it’s good

for. While hybrid shapes are great for extremely stormy regions, dome or

tunnel tents are better in regions with moderate climates.

PS: We also sell cookware and mess kits through our subsidiary Edelrid.

“Mountain climbing and hiking have always been an important part of my life.

I like to quote the fi lm director Ingmar Bergman, who was absolutely right when

he said: ‘Climbing a mountain is like getting older: The higher you go, the less

strength you have – but the further you can see!’ ... Having a far-reaching view of

things is especially important when it comes to nature and the environment.“

The independent photographer, author, journal-

ist and tour operator, Tobias Hauser, has been

a friend and valuable partner to VAUDE. He

presents his impressive travel experiences in

countries like Cuba and Costa Rica, amongst

others, at the renown Mundologia Festival in

Freiburg. He became a proud father in 2010.

You recently became a father – Congratulations!

What does this venture into a new phase of life mean to you?

It is certainly a great adventure. Perhaps my travels as a photographer

will be a bit shorter now. We will try to travel as a family as often as we

can.

Do you experience nature differently now with your child than before?

It’s exciting to imagine how Luis perceives nature. Everything is new,

everything raises his curiosity and sometimes things seem threatening.

I may be more aware, stop more to look around at my surroundings –

What is crawling over there and who lives in that hole in the tree? I am

rediscovering nature with him.

Now you are venturing out with your family. Where is your path taking you?

New Zealand and the giant sandbox of Ninety Mile Beach. Luis will dig

in the sand and discover nature in all its diversity: keas, yellow-eyed

penguins and common brushtail possums. I will record his little adven-

ture in nature just as I will the planned hikes and mountain climbs on

the Tongariro Northern Circuit on the volcano plateau of the north island.

In any case, this venture will be a true challenge, since more spontaneity

and fl exibility will be necessary with the little one.

But this won’t be the fi rst venture Luis has been on.

What has been your most beautiful experience with your family so far?

Our fi rst trip to the Dolomites. Luis was only 3 months old and actually

slept through most of the hike. He found the groundhogs interesting and

the cows. The rock landscape – our motivation – didn’t really interest

him. Only at the summit did he really take a look around. This new

perspective on nature, with the eyes of a child, was the most emotional

experience for me on this tour.

Is there a moment that you fi nd the most rewarding in venturing out

into the next new phase of life?

We have a lot of fun with each other. At the moment, Luis likes to bite

my chin and when I do it back to him, he laughs himself half to death.

It’s moments like these and every little developmental step. Right now,

he’s starting to move from lying on his stomache to getting up on all

fours. It won’t be long until he will set out on expeditions through our

home and garden.

Tell me, Paul, Tom and Sina, ‘Forest Day’ is a big part

of your childcare center. Do you go outside even when

the weather isn’t so great?

Tom: Of course, staying inside is really boring.

When you go out for Forest Day – what do you take

with you?

Sina: Rubber boots, rain pants, my backpack ...

Tom: … a snack and something to drink!

Paul: a fi rst-aid kit, magnifying glass for bugs and a rope.

Why a rope?

Paul: To move tree trunks and big branches. We tie

them together and pull them into our camp. But the

branches aren’t from living trees.

And what do you need a fi rst-aid kit for?

Tom: In case someone cuts off a fi nger or something or

stains their ankle ... oops! sprains their ankle.

Rain pants in the summer – isn’t that too warm?

Sina: Nope, and that way no one gets ticks. Those

are easy to get in the woods. We don’t wear T-shirts

in the forest either.

What’s the most fun about Forest Day?

Sina: Looking for animal tracks, from deer or other

animals. Sometimes we leave hazelnuts on the

ground for the animals.

Paul: We’ve also seen tadpoles. We fi ll our

magnifying glass with water, then you can see

everything really good. I’ve even caught frogs and

then let them jump away.

Tom: We also found something really cool once:

a tree root that looked just like a dinosaur foot!

Then we hid it in our camp.

Thank you all and have fun on your next Forest Day!

Plain bottles for decorative bags.

Our bag collection entitled “Recycled” is something very spe-cial – not only do the bags and backpacks look simply remark-able, they are primarily made of a very special kind of material: recycled plastic PET bottles.

In the beginning was the plastic bottle… Once empty, it’s not really of much use anymore. But only at fi rst

glance – because who knows, maybe that very same bottle is now a bench at your favorite park. Or even

better yet: you are carrying it around on your shoulder – as a VAUDE bag. Cleaned and granulated PET

bottles are turned into yarn which is then spun into the innovative material that our Recycled Collection

is made of.

Plastic bottles, forgotten and disposed of become lovingly

designed bags and backpacks whose lining is made of

100% recycled material. To achieve better abrasion

resistance, the outer material is made of 55%

PET yarn and 45% polyester. A bag therefore

consists of about 12 bottles, depend-

ing on its size. Who would have

thought that a plain old

bottle can turn into

something this

beautiful?

Can we still build on local production in these times of globalization?

We at VAUDE asked ourselves this very question and then we launched

our bag and backpack collection “Made in Germany”. Here, design,

deve lopment and production come from a single source in Germany,

from Obereisenbach to be exact. Only the components were procured

from the global market. The design of the models follows a clear and

esthetic principle and the models are made of highest quality materials.

And the concept works. At the International Leather Goods Fair (I.L.M) in

Offenbach, VAUDE was honored with the highest award in the European

leather goods industry: the German Leather Goods Award. The renowned

award which is presented only once every two years went to the VAUDE

collection “Made in Germany” this time around.

Here today, the entire world tomorrow.

The way to becoming Europe’s most environmentally friendly outdoor outfi tter

starts with the product – and our Lemniscate Collection is truly a prime example.

We have made our dyeing process more environmentally friendly: instead of

the commonly used dyes baths we use the spin dyeing process. The advantage:

the fabric is dyed with an optimized ecological process. Water consumption is

reduced by almost 90% and energy consumption, CO2 emissions and the use

of chemicals by some 60%. And the best thing is no compromises have to be

made in terms of color fastness, or light and water resistance.

The Lemniscate Collection boasts yet a further special feature: all designs in

the collection are based on a fi gure eight – be it a backpack, shoulder bag,

lap top bag or sports bag.

Our all-new Packs ’n Bags collection puts color into your life – with a good conscience. By using a special dye process, we have managed to considerably reduce water and energy consumption.

Hilke Patzwall, one of VAUDE’s “green souls”, and her team are committed to corporate and product sustainability. Successfully. VAUDE is the very fi rst outdoor outfi tter to obtain certi-fi cation in compliance with the environmental “EMAS” standard. And this is something we are truly proud of.

VAUDE is entering an ecological era. The fi rst steps were taken 15 years ago.

And what has happened since?

Back in 1994, VAUDE introduced the Ecolog Network, a system for recy-

cling polyester products. With this step, VAUDE was way ahead of the

“green wave” in the outdoor industry. We were also true pioneers with our

bluesign®-certifi ed base layers which enabled us to manufacture our prod-

ucts with the largest possible degree of resource effi ciency. We have been

continually developing our environmental management system since our

initial EMAS certifi cation in 2008, and every year our ambitious environ-

mental standards are tested and scrutinized anew.

Just like in sports, the road to success can be a rocky one.

What were your challenges?

It’s a fact, not all things go according to plan. With Ecolog one of our prob-

lems was that too few people made use of it. But our goal is to become

Europe’s most environmentally friendly outdoor outfi tter. And those who

know us, know that we will not give up that easily. The knowledge that we

gained from Ecolog is now benefi tting the entire outdoor industry, with the

aim of developing environmentally friendly solutions for all.

Green Shape, bluesign®, ecosystem – they sound great – but what do they

really mean. What’s behind these names?

We combine all of our activities in terms of sustainability under the term

“VAUDE ecosystem”. This refers to our business-related activities, as well as

the manufacturing of ecological products. Two examples: at our company

headquarters, we operate with 100% renewable energy and only use recy-

cled or FSC paper. In our products we promote the use of organic cotton,

recycled fabrics or materials certifi ed in compliance with environmental

standards, predominantly bluesign®. Products that meet our strict criteria

receive VAUDE’s quality label “Green Shape”. This further contributes to

our transparency and accountability.

What motivates you to continue to act as a “green soul” at VAUDE?

I see myself as an initiator of change and as a moderator and helper in the

individual departments on their way to optimizing sustainability. Naturally,

my aim is for VAUDE to become a carbon-neutral company and that we

manufacture 100% sustainable products in the future!

What is VAUDE’s ecological vision, and what is your personal vision?

VAUDE is very well aware of its responsibility. We are constantly working on

keeping our economic activities in harmony with mankind and nature. This

is often not as easy as it sounds, but we are not ones to give up. After all,

we want to become Europe’s most environmentally friendly outdoor brand!

My personal vision is to see this holistic principle take root in our own way

of thinking, and that taking the ecologically and socially most compatible

path becomes a choice that needs no second guessing. Once we have

reach ed this stage, we will no longer need any “sustainability offi cers” – we

will all be living sustainability.
