Vaucluse Public School Cambridge Avenue Vaucluse NSW 2030 Tel. (02) 9337 2672 Fax. (02) 9337 2163 [email protected] Niamh and Rachel from class PJ dressed to impress for NAIDOC celebrations today. It is with heavy hearts that we say farewell to Niamh as she is moving overseas. We would like to wish Niamh and her family all the very best for this new exciting adventure. We are going to miss you so much Niamh! Dear Parents Last week the email system for all DET schools was down. I was unable to receive emails from Monday 17 June until the weekend. Our newsletter was not published last week because of this. It was good to know that it was missed by many. You may have read about it in the press. Initially it was very concerning not receiving any emails but we all very quickly grew to enjoy the absence of this daily demand in our lives. This week all is restored. If you sent me an email last week would you kindly resend as many emails have not reached us. Last Monday 17 June, I accompanied one of our school leaders- Daniel McDill to the Young Minds Conference. The theme of the conference was How Do You Grow a Good Person? Daniel sat on the stage with 80 other students and the Dalai Lama. While Daniel did not get to ask a question he did get to shake his hand. It was a wonderful experience to be close to the Dalai Lama. He is a very warm and charismatic person with a great love of children. Over the two days there were some outstanding speakers. The message throughout the two days was to build resilience in our children in order to give them the skills to cope with life in the twenty first century. An important message relevant to the school holidays was to allow our children time to get bored, to do nothing, to have unstructured time and time to themselves. Einstein said out of boredom comes creativity. So these holidays try to plan for time to do nothing and see what happens. This week the Semester 1 Reports were sent home. If you did not receive your child’s report please see your class teacher. Teachers have been gathering assessment data throughout Term 2 to inform the compilation of these reports. Teams have worked together along with Support Staff to ensure report information is accurate and informative. If you wish to discuss the report do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher to organize an interview at the beginning of Term 3. Next Term we will be introducing two new initiatives. Daily fitness will take place each day before lunch. Each teacher will take their class through a rotation of fitness skills each day. More information will be available in the class bulletins at the commencement of next term. As part of the school’s sustainability program we will introduce a Nude Food Day. This will be each Wednesday where we will ask children to bring their lunch and morning tea to school in as little packaging as possible. Today we celebrated NAIDOC Week with an outstanding assembly. Each class presented a different item that celebrated the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The theme for this year proudly celebrates the 50 th anniversary of the presentation of the Yirrkala Bark Petitions to the Federal Parliament. The theme is: We Value the Vision: Yirrkala Bark Petitions 2013. In August 1963, the Yolngu people of Yirrkala in northeast Arnhem Land sent two bark petitions framed by traditional ochre paintings of clan designs to the Australian House of Representatives. Last year on our excursion to Canberra we were fortunate to be able to see the Yirrkala Bark Petitions on display in Parliament House. This was a moving experience for all of us as we read the history around the petitions.

The petitions protested the Commonwealth’s granting of mining rights on land excised from Arnhem Land reserve and sought the recognition by the Australian Parliament of the Yolngu peoples’ traditional rights and ownership of their lands. Asserting title to Yolngu country under Yolngu law, the petitions were the first traditional documents recognised by the Commonwealth Parliament and helped to shape the nation’s acknowledgment of Aboriginal people and their land rights. In the body of the newsletter are some photos of this assembly where everyone joyously celebrated our Aboriginal history and culture. A reminder that the first day of school is a staff development day and pupil free. School commences for students on Tuesday 16 July 2013. We wish you a happy and restful holiday and we hope you all enjoy spending time with those you love the most. Maureen Hallahan Principal

Vegetable Garden News

Tuesday classes saw students weeding their garden

beds and learning about the roles seasons play in our

garden. Students talked about:

The different types of vegetables that grow in

summer and winter.

Why some plants grow better in summer or

winter conditions, and

The effect the day length has on how plants

grow.

3T were assessed for their wheelbarrow skills around

the garden on a cracking meandering course I set for

them. All students passed and were exceptionally good

at it. Licences to come!

A few children have taken to the art of chicken

whispering and have become quite good at it.

See photo below of the ‘Chicken Whisperer’.

In the garden now are leeks, spring onions, celeriac,

coriander, parsley, sweet potatoes, lettuce and radishes.

It is time to plant your garlic, onions, brassicas,

potatoes, coriander, lettuce, carrots, parsnips, beetroots,

English spinach, silverbeet, broad beans and peas.

You may have noticed a broccoli crop in the chicken

shed. I have done this for a few reasons.

One for a nice crop of broccoli for our kitchen, and

secondly when we harvest the broccoli flowers to

consume, the chickens get a free feed as well.

Now some housekeeping for the garden.

Please do not:

Weed or pull out seedlings that you may think are

weeds ( if in doubt do NOT pull it out!),

Remove plants to feed the chickens.

Also thankyou to the volunteers, Nick, Justine and

Peony in the Vegetable Garden.Every bit of effort helps

and much appreciated.

If you want to help ring, email or text me and I can put

you on the text message services of when I am working,

or set you up with a task you can do in your own time as

we have plenty of large and small projects.

Cheers

Debating

In Round 1 of the Bondi District Debating we were up against Woollahra Public School. They were formidable opponents. Both our teams acquitted themselves well. In particular, Team A were just pipped at the post. Round Two will be against Bondi Public School on 25 July (Week 2 Term 3). Both teams will be working on their debating skills over the holidays. VPS Walkathon - Can you help?

We need a few special mums and dads to help run the 2013 VPS Walkathon. This year's Walkathon will raise money for a fantastic projector and audio equipment for the hall. The walkathon is a great opportunity to teach kids what it means to be part of a community and how together we can achieve great things. We need a few parent volunteers to help organise this year's walkathon scheduled for Term 3. If you're interested in helping out please email [email protected]

Thank you Henry S of 3S for sharing your camp

Dance Classes

We are lucky to have secured one of Sydney’s

foremost teachers, Dale Pope. She is a senior

teacher at Sydney Dance Company as well as

choreographer to the Australia girls’ choir and

Bindy Irwin.

The children will learn some great technique, but

more importantly Dale ensures the classes are

engaging and fun so her students develop a love of

dance. The lessons will be held in the school hall.

Children will need to arrive at 8.15 for an 8.20

start. The lessons will finish at 9.10 to enable our

budding dancers time to change for school.

The students can wear whatever dance outfits

they like however sports uniforms are fine as well.

Dance shoes are recommended.

The K-2 Class is on Tuesday Morning from 8.15am

in the hall. K-2 kids must be dropped off to the

hall not at the school gates.

The 3-6 Class is on Thursday Morning at 8.15am

in the hall

Cost is $20 per lesson paid for the term in

advance to P&C. Three options to pay:

- The preferred way is a transfer of funds online

to the VPS P&C Account BSB: 032252 A/C:930

569 and include in the message "The Child's name

and dance".

- Or pay by cheque (Vaucluse Public P&C) in an

envelope to the office

- Or pay by credit card in

the clothing pool

The very colourful NAIDOC celebrations

4/5A explores a new way to raise awareness about important issues. It involves chalking the pavement

in significant colours

Yesterday we chalked the pathway into school with red, yellow and black. Unfortunately it rained during the night and washed all the chalk away, but it was the message that was important. We each wrote a letter to our neighbours to explain what we were doing. As you walk down the path later today we you will remember the path of our indigenous people to equality in the country and the hopes for the future. Class 4/5A

VOOSC NEWS

VOOSC STARS Stars for the end of Term 2 are: Floyd Yr3 Floyd, we would like you to know that your star has been awarded for kindness and respect to others, exceptional listening skills and for great sportsmanship each week. Congratulations Floyd! Noah. F Yr1 Wow Noah! you have been working really hard at earning marbles, being respectful and patient, packing away after play and being a very honest person. Noah found some money on the top field this week and handed it in to Mrs. Cohen. We are so proud of you Noah, good things happen for good deeds done! Abigail N Yr 1 Thank you Abigail for all of the little things you do to make other people feel happy! We really appreciate your exceptional dish drying service and always done with a smile! Welcome to the wall of fame. Term 2 Fees are due in full please. Thank you so much to all of the families who have kept on top of fees this term.We really appreciate it. Unpaid fees and no communication may result in positions being cancelled until all fees are recovered. If you are experiencing difficulties, please contact Lee immediately to discuss arranging a payment plan. Unfortunately, unless all fees are received we are unable to accept vacation care bookings.

Vacation Care Bookings Closed Staff has had some queries in regard to costs for vacation care which we feel requires some clarification. As a not for Profit service the fees charged are to cover the costs of providing care for your children only, there is no profit.

Vacation care venues are not always local and rarely free. They are not always within walking distance although when possible, we do try. Therefore buses are required as well as costs for the activity. These costs are on top of the daily fee which is $45.00 per day over a 10hr day! Broken down, the $4.50 per hour needs to go toward paying staff who work these hours. Staff/child ratios must be adhered to at all times and according to numbers, age and abilities of the children in our care, staff are hired accordingly. We are able to assist you with information in regard to claiming daily fee reductions through Centrelink. We also aim to keep the cost affordable for families and are respectful of how costs can affect family budgets, we all have families. The more families that book, the more we can reduce fees as expenses can be spread over a larger group. We are also respecting that our children need to have a holiday without feeling that they are always at school while the rest of their peers are somewhere exciting! Hence, some days in and some out. Local buses are not always reliable in transporting us to venues in time for booked activities, nor are they always safe. However, where possible we do try to use the public system but generally only with smaller groups. To catch Public transport during winter is a challenge in itself. We cannot predict weather; we need to walk with a mixed age group of children to catch buses, which is not always quick or dry! To Randwick alone, it requires catching 2 buses there and 2 buses back as well as walking to and from school. Often we are faced with full buses and adults who refuse to vacate their seat for children. We are not referring to our Senior Citizens or the members of our communities who are faced with physical challenge either. At times they also face the same difficulties as we do. Children who are unable to stand upright while the bus driver swings the bus into corners with the speed of a rally driver but not always the precision! Often they zoom off without waiting for passengers to be safely seated or holding a vacant pole. There are many, many risks involved, so when necessary we hire private buses to ensure the children placed in our care travel safely and arrive at all destinations in one piece. The quotes for bus hire are available for anyone who is interested in seeing how much it costs to hire buses. Please feel free to ask. We shop around for the best deal, but the costs will leave you gobsmacked. We always welcome queries of all kinds and hope that this has thrown some light on why some of the activity fees cost what they do. Thank you to all of the families who have continued to book their Vacation Care fun with us! Have a safe and happy holiday from everyone at Voosc Warm Regards VOOSC TEAM Vaucluse Out Of School Centre T/F: 9337 3031 [email protected]
