There   is   a   difference   of   opinion   where  the  first  stone  should  be  laid.  

According  to  some  northern  ācāryas,  the  1st   foundation   stone   should   be   laid   in  the   following   corners   of   the   slab   when  the   Sun   is   in   the   depicted   signs   of   the  Zodiac.  

Some  south   Indian  ācāryas   suggest   that  the   1st   stone   should   always   be   laid   in  the  North–east  regardless  of  the  month.

Bhūta-bali Vidhānam

Placation of the elementals ! Be seated, do ācamanam, guru dhyānam, śānti pāṭha etc.

Saṅkalpam — oṁ adya pūrvokta guṇa viśeṣaṇa visiṣṭāyāṁ asyāṁ śubha tithau kariṣyamāna asya bhūmi pūja karmaṇi pūrvāṅga bhūta-bali-dānam ahaṁ kariṣye || On  this  auspicious  day  characterised  by  the  afore-­‐mentioned  astrological  parameters,  as  an  ancilliary  to  this  bhumi-­‐puja    I  now  make  offerings  to  all  the    bhūtas  of  the  directions.  

! Make 8 sthandilas (or place banana leaves etc.) at the 8 cardinal directions of the land. ! Māṣa-bhakta-bali — Mix yoghurt, lac-dye (alakta or any red food dye) and black gram

(maṣa) place in a clay cup on the left hand corner of an inverted triangle. Repeat phaṭ 7 times over it.

! Go in procession to the 8 directions around the land and make the following panchopacāra offerings including a generous dollop of the māṣa-bali mixture.

oṁ bhūtāḥ pretāḥ piśācāśca ye vasantyatra bhūtale | te gṛhnantu mayā dattam balim etaṁ prasādhitam || 1 || pūjitā gandha-puṣpadyair balibhis tarpitās tathā | deśād asmād viniḥsṛtya pūjāṁ paśyantu mat-kṛtām || 2 ||

 vetālāśca piśācāśca rākṣasāśca sarīsṛpāḥ | apasarpantu te sarve caṇḍikāstreṇa tāḍitāḥ || 4 ||

yad atra saṁsthitaṁ bhūtaṁ sthānam āśritya sarvadā | sthānaṁ tyaktvā tu tat sarvaṁ yatreṣṭhaṁ tatra gacchatu || 5 ||

 

Saṅkalpaḥ — Resolve

śuklāṁ baradharaṁ viṣṇuṁ śaśi varṇaṁ caturbhujaṁ | prasanna vadanaṁ dhyāyet sarva vighnopa śāntaye ||

asyāṁ śubha tithau asya yajamānasya upāta samasta durita kṣaya dvāra śrī iṣṭha-devatā prītyartham prāripsyamāna vāstunaḥ śubhatva saṁpattaye nirvighnena nirmāṇa siddhaye ca gṛha/āśrama/kāryālaya nirmāṇaṅga bhūtam bhūmi pūjām kariṣye — tad aṅgatvena nirvighnena parisamāptyartham ādau vighneśvara pūjām kariṣye ||

āvāhayet tato bhūmiṁ sarvābharaṇa-bhūṣitām | dvibhujāñca trinetrāñca karaṇḍa-makuṭānvitām || hema-yajñopavītañca pītanetrāṁ suyauvanām | pītañca pita-vastrañca puṇḍarīka-dalaikṣaṇām || kṛtāñjali puṭovā'pi cotpalālāñcitantu vā | bhūmi devi svarūpāya sarvābharaṇa sundarim ||

śukla-varṇāṁ viśālākṣīṁ kūrma-pṛṣṭhopari sthitām | sarva śasyāśrayāṁ devīṁ dharām āvāhayāmyaham ||

upacāras — oṁ bhūṁ bhūmyai namaḥ ||

Bhu Devī nāmavalli — oṁ bhūmyai namaḥ | mahīṣyai | pṛthivyai | vasundharāyai | vasudhāyai | vāsavyai | hiraṇya-garbhiṇyai | samudravatyai | mahī-dharaṇyai | viṣṇu-patnyai | vyāpinyai | dharāyai ||

oṁ dhanur-dharāyai vidmahe sarva siddhyai ca dhīmahi | tanno dharā pracodayāt ||

Prārthana

viṣṇu-patnīṁ mahīṁ devīṁ mādhavīṁ mādhava-priyām | lakṣmīṁ priya sakhīṁ devīṁ namāmyacyuta vallabhām ||

samudra vasane devī pārvata-sthana maṇḍale | viṣṇu-patnī namastubhyam khanana-kriya kṣamasva me ||

sa tyaṁ bṛhad ṛtam u graṁ dīkṣā tapo brahma ya jñaḥ pṛthi vīṁ dhārayanti | sa no bhūtasya bhavya sya patny-u ruṁ lo kaṁ pṛthi vī na ḥ kṛṇotu || Expansive   Truth   and   Strict   Law,   the   Initiation,   Spiritual   Discipline,   the   Veda,   and   Sacrifice   uphold   the  Earth.  May   she,   the  Queen  of   all   that   is   and   is   to  be,  may  Prithivī    make  ample   space  and   room   for  us.  (A.V.12:1:1)  

śīlā bhūmi r aśmā pāṁsuḥ sā bhūmi ḥ sandhṛtā dhṛtā | tasyai hira ṇya-vakṣase pṛthi vyā a kara ṁ nama ḥ || Rock  earth,  and  stone,  and  dust,  this  Earth  is  held  together,  firmly  bound.    To  this  gold-­‐breasted  Prithivī  mine  adoration  have  I  paid.  (A.V.12:1:26)   yat te bhūme vi khanāmi kṣi praṁ tad api rohatu | mā te marma vimṛgvari mā te hṛda yam arpipam ||

Whatever  I  dig  from  you  O  Earth  may  that  have  quick  renewed  growth.    May  we  not  injure  your  vital  centers,  may  we  not  inure  your  heart.  (A.V.  12:1:35)  

bhūme mātar ni dhe hi mā bha drayā supra tiṣṭhitam | sa ṁvi dānā di vā ka ve śrīyāṁ mā dhehi bhūtyāṁ ||

O  Earth,  my  Mother,  set  thou  me  happily  in  a  place  of  security.  In  harmony  with  Heaven,  O  enlightened  one,  grant  to  me  glory  and    material  wealth.  (A.V.12:1:63)

Nāga Pūjā

! Use either a nāga-stone image, a maṇḍala or a kumbha.

Dhyānam anantaṁ sarva nāgānām adhipam viśvarūpiṇam | jagataṁ śāntikartāraṁ maṇḍale sthāpayāmyaham ||

oṁ bhūr bhuvas suvaḥ, ananta-nāga-rāja ihāgaccha iha tiṣṭha, anantaya nāgarājāya namaḥ | anantam nāga-rājam āvāhayāmi sthāpayāmi || Upacāras — om anantāya nāgarājāya namaḥ ||

oṁ nava-kulāya vidmahe, viṣa-dantāya dhīmahi, tannas sarpaḥ pracodayāt || nāmavalli — oṁ anantāya namaḥ | śeṣāya | vāsukaye | śaṅkhāya | padmāya | kaṁbalāya | karkoṭāya | aśvatarāya | dhṛtarāṣṭrāya | śaṅkha-pālāya | takṣakāya | kāliyāya | kapilāya ||

Sarpa Sūkta namo 'stu sa rpebhyo ye ke ca pṛthi vīm anu | ye a ntari kṣe ye di vi tebhya s sa rpebhyo namaḥ || 1 ||

Homage  to   the  dragons  which  are  on  the  earth,   the  dragons   in   the  atmosphere  and   in   the  sky   to   those  adversaries  homage.    

ye vo ro ca ne di vo ye vā sūrya sya raśmiṣu | yeṣāṁ a psu sada skṛtaṁ tebhya s sa rpebhyo namaḥ || 2 ||

Those  that  are  in  the  vault  of  the  sky,  or  those  that  are  in  the  rays  of  the  Sun,    those  whose  seat  is  made  in  the  waters;  to  those  dragons  obeisance.    

ye iṣa vo yātu dhānānāṁ ye vā vana spatīguṁ raṇu | ye vā va teṣu śera te tebhya s sa rpebhyo namaḥ || 3 ||

Those  that  are  the  missiles  of  sorcerers,  of  those  that  are  among  the  trees,  or  those  that  lie  in  the  wells;  to  those  adversaries  obeisance.    TS.  4;2;8g    

Prārthana brahma-loke ca ye sarpāḥ śeṣanāga purogamāḥ | namo’stu tebhyaḥ suprītāḥ prasannās santu me sadā || 1 || viṣṇu-loke ca ye sarpāḥ vāsuki pramukhāścaye | namo’stu tebhyaḥ suprītāḥ prasannās santu me sadā || 2 || rudra-loke ca ye sarpāḥ takṣaka pramukhās tathā | namo'stu tebhyaḥ suprītāḥ prasannās santu me sadā || 3 ||

Donation of a golden/silver nāga to the Brāhmin:

Hariḥ om tat sat | kṛta-saṁskāra karmaṇaḥ sāṅgatārthaṁ imaṁ hemaṁ/rajatam nagaṁ sa-kalaśaṁ sa-vastraṁ sa-dakṣiṇaṁ tubhyaṁ ahaṁ saṁpradade na mama | anena suvarṇamaya/rajata-maya nāga dānena anantādayo nāga-devatā priyatām ||

! Offerings are now made in the 8 cardinal directions to the Dik-pālakas. ! The offerings consist of a slice of the big green pumpkin – on this a large pinda of rice and a

libation of blood or water dyed red. ! Recite each dhyana sloka and offer pancopacara puja – gandha, puṣpa, dhūpa, dīpa (clay

lamp) and then the bali.

Saṅkalpam — oṁ adya pūrvokta guṇa viśeṣaṇa visiṣṭāyāṁ asyāṁ śubha tithau kṛtasya asya bhūmi pūja karmaṇi sāṅgatā siddhyarthaṁ dig-pāla pūjana pūrvakaṁ sthāpita devatābhyo bali-dānam ahaṁ kariṣye || On  this  auspicious  day  characterised  by  the  afore-­‐mentioned  astrological  parameters,  as  an  ancilliary  to  this  bhumi-­‐puja    I  now  make  offerings  to  all  the    eight  regents  of  the  directions.  

Indra indro'marāvati nāthaḥ śaci devyāstu nāyakaḥ | vajrāyudhasya prācīśaḥ tasyai cairāvato gajaḥ ||

daitya-darpa vināśāya sahasrākṣāya dhīmate | kuliśavya grahastāya namaste'stu śatakrato ||

I   salute   you,   O  wise  King   of   the   Gods,  who   destroyed   the   pride   of   the   titans   and   performed   a   hundred  sacrifices.   bho! Indra! svāṁ diśam rakṣa, baliṁ bhakṣa, asya yajamānasya sakuṭumbasya saparivārasya, āyuḥ kartā, kṣema kartā, śānti kartā, puṣṭi kartā, tuṣṭi kartā, varado bhava | anena balidānena indraḥ priyatām || O  Indra  guard  your  direction,  accept   this  offering,  be  generous   to  us,    and  make  this  yajamana  and  his  extended   family   long-­‐lived,   replete   with   well-­‐being,   peace,   strength,   contentment:   may   you   be   pleased  with  this  offering.   Agni agnis tejovati vāsiḥ svāhā devyāḥ priya patiḥ |

meṣārūḍho śakti-dharaḥ diśāgneyāṁ pratiṣṭhitaḥ ||

mukhaṁ yaḥ sarva devānāṁ yena havyaṁ tu nīyate | yena pravartate sarvaṁ namaste'stu havir-bhuje || 2 ||

I  salute  you,  O  Lord  of  Fire,  the  mouth  of  all  the  gods,  the  one  who  conveys  the  oblations  and  by  whom  everything  revolves.  

bho! agne! svāṁ diśam rakṣa, baliṁ bhakṣa, asya yajamānasya sakuṭumbasya saparivārasya, āyuḥ kartā, kṣema kartā, śānti kartā, puṣṭi kartā, tuṣṭi kartā, varado bhava | anena balidānena agniḥ priyatām ||

Yama yama saṁyamani nāthaḥ śyāmalāya namaḥ priyaḥ | daṇḍa-bhṛn mahiṣārūḍho dakṣinasyāṁ diśi sthitaḥ || yena saṁhriyate sarvaṁ yena dharmaśca rakṣyate | yasmād bibheti loko'yaṁ preta-nātha namo'stu te ||

I  salute  you,  O  Lord  of  the  Dead,  the  one  who  protects  the  Dharma,    who  terrifies  the  whole  world,  and  by  whom  all  is  eventually  taken.

bho! yama! svāṁ diśam rakṣa, baliṁ bhakṣa, asya yajamānasya sakuṭumbasya saparivārasya, āyuḥ kartā, kṣema kartā, śānti kartā, puṣṭi kartā, tuṣṭikartā, varado bhava | anena balidānena yama priyatām ||

Naiṛṛti krṣṇāṅgana purāṅg yasya dīrghā bhāryam arohayaḥ | śastra kunto naiṛrtasya naiṛrtyāṁ diśi śthitaḥ || rākṣasā yātudhānāśca piśācāśca śrayanti yam | tasmai niṛrti rudrāya rākṣasāṁ pataye namaḥ ||

I  salute  you,  Wrathful  Nairriti,    Lord  of  the  demons,  in  whom  all  the  Rakshasas,  Yatudhanas  and  Pisachas  take  their  refuge.  

bho! niṛrti! svāṁ diśam rakṣa, baliṁ bhakṣa, asya yajamānasya sakuṭumbasya saparivārasya, āyuḥ kartā, kṣema kartā, śānti kartā, puṣṭi kartā, tuṣṭi kartā, varado bhava | anena balidānena niṛrtiḥ priyatām ||

Varuṇa puri śradhāvati yasya priyā bhārya ca kālikā | makara-vāha pāśa-dharo varuṇa paścim-eśvaraḥ || yena saṁrakṣyate sarvaṁ yasmin sarvaṁ pralīyate | amogha-pāśa-hastāya tadapāṁ pataye namaḥ ||

I  salute  you,  O  Lord  of  the  Waters,  who  carries  the  peerless  noose,  who  sustains  all  life  and  into  whom  all  is  dissolved  in  the  end.  

bho! varuṇa! svāṁ diśam rakṣa, baliṁ bhakṣa, asya yajamānasya sakuṭumbasya saparivārasya, āyuḥ kartā, kṣema kartā, śānti kartā, puṣṭi kartā, tuṣṭi kartā, varado bhava | anena balidānena varuṇaḥ priyatām ||

I  salute  you,  Lord  of  the  Cosmic  Life  Force,  the  master  of  all  living  beings,  who  supports  all  life  through  the  respiratory  process.

Kubera kuberas cārakāryāṁ astu citrarekha priyaṅgaṇaḥ | hayavāho khaḍga-dharaḥ udīcyāṁ diśi vartate || yat prasādājjagat sarvaṁ dhanena paripūryate | yakṣa-guhyaka-nātha ca dhana-nātha namo'stu te ||

I  salute  you,  O  Lord  of  Wealth,  the  master  of  all  the  Yakshas  and  Guhyakas,  and  the  one  by  whose  grace  the  world  is  filled  with  prosperity.

tad eva lagnam sudinam, tad eva tāra balam candra balam tad eva | vidyā balam daiva balam tad eva, lakṣmīpate te aṅghriyugam smarāmi ||

When  the  lotus  feet  of  the  Lord  of  Lakshmi  are  recalled  to  mind,  there  is  a  good  ascendant,    a  good  day,  strength  of  constelation  and  Moon,  power  of  wisdom,  energy  of  divinity.  

hariḥ om tat sat. śubhe śobhane muhūrte, asya śrī bhagavato mahā puruṣasya, śrī viṣṇoḥ ājñayā pravartamānasya ādya brahmaṇo dvitīya parārdhe, śrī śveta varāha kalpe, vaivasvata manvantare, kali yuge, kali-yugasya prathama pāde, bauddha āvatāre, śakābde meroḥ dakṣiṇa/paścima/uttara dik bhāge, ________ deśe, ________ rājye ________ mahānagari antargate, asmin vartamānām vyavahārikānām prabhavādi ṣaṣṭi saṁvatsarānām madhye ________ nāma saṁvatsare, ________ ayane, ________ ṛtau ________ māse, ________ pakṣe, ________ tithau, ________ vāsare, ________ nakṣatra yuktāyāṁ, śubha yoge śubha karaṇe śrī viṣṇu yoga, śrī viṣṇu karaṇe, sakala graha guṇa viśeṣaṇa visiṣṭhāyāṁ, asyāṁ śubha tithau ________ gotrodbhavasya, ________ nakṣatre jātasya ________ nāma yajamānaḥ || asyām śubha tithau bhagavad ājñayā bhagavad kaiṅkarya rūpam _______ nakṣatrasya _______ gotrasya _______ nāmadheya yajamānasya prarīpsyamāna vāstunaḥ śubhatva saṁpattaye nirvighnena nirmāṇa siddhaye ca gṛhe nirmāṇaṅga bhūtaṁ śila-nyāsaṁ kariṣye || with  the  sanction  of  the  Supreme  Lord  and  in  order  to  invoke  His  grace,  so  that  this  yajaman  .....................  and  his  wife  ....................  [all  the  people  of  this  city]  may  obtain  auspiciousness  and  prosperity,  and  that  this  house  [temple]  may  be  completed  without  let  or  hindrance,  as  an  ancillary  rite  to  the  construction  I  now  perform  the  foundation  laying  ceremony.

puṣpa arcana - oṁ varuṇāya namaḥ, pracetase, surūpiṇe, apām-pataye, makara-vāhanāya, aneka maṇi-bhūṣitāya, jalādhipataye, pāśa-hastāya, sakala-tīrthādhi-pataye |

oṁ jala-bimbāya vidmahe, nīla-puruṣāya dhīmahi, tanno varuṇa pracodayāt

oṁ namo namaste astu sphaṭika prabhāya suśveta-vastrāya, sumaṅgalāya supāśa-hastāya jhaṣāsanāya jalādhināthāya varuṇāya namo namaḥ || ! the mouth of the vessel with the right hand or show the aṅkusha mudra, or touch with a bunch

of kuśa grass:—

śivā āpaḥ santu — santu śivā āpaḥ | saumanasyam astu — astu saumanasyam | akṣataṁ cāriṣṭaṁ cāstu — astvakṣatam ariṣṭam | bhavadbhir anujñātaḥ puṇyāhaṃ vācayiṣye — vācyatām ||

puna stvā ‘’di tyā ru drā vasa va s sami ndhatām | puna r bra hmāṇo vasunītha ya jñaiḥ | ghṛtena tvaṃ ta nvaṁ vardhayasva | sa tyās sa ntu yaja mānasya kāmāḥ || (V.S. 12:44)

Again  let  the  Ādityas,  Rudras,  Vaus,  and  Brahmans  with  their  rites  kindle  you,  O  blazing  Agni;  Wealth-­‐bringer!  May  the  offered  ghee  increase  your  body:  May  the  Sacrificer's  wishes  come  true.  

bho brāhmaṇā ! asya yajamānasya puṇyāhaṁ bhavanto bruvantu | oṁ puṇyāham astu x 3

sva sti mi trā varuṇā sva sti pa thye revati | sva sti na indra ścāgniśca sva sti no adite kṛdhi || Prosper  us,  Mitra,  Varuna.  O  wealthy  Pathya,  prosper  us.  Indra  and  Agni,  prosper  us;  prosper  us  you,  O  Aditi.  

bho brāhmaṇā ! asya yajamānasya svasti bhavanto bruvantu || oṁ svastir astu x 3

ṛdhyāsmā ha vyair nama so pa sadya | mi traṁ de vaṃ mi tra dheya ṃ no astu | a nūrādhān ha viṣā va rdhaya ntaḥ | śa taṃ jīvema śa rada s-savīrāḥ ||

ābra hman brāhma ṇo bra hma varca sī jāyatām asmin rāṣṭre rāja nya iṣa vya ś śūro mahāra tho jāyatāṃ, dogdhrī dhe nur voḍhā 'na dhvān āśus sapti ḥ pura ndhri yoṣā ji ṣṇū ra the ṣṭhās sa bheyo yuvā'sya yaja mānasya vīro jāyatāṃ, nikāme ni kāme naḥ pa rjanyo varṣatu pha linyo na oṣa dhayaḥ pacyantāṃ yoga kṣe mo na ḥ kalpatām || In  the  Priesthood  let  there  be  born  the  Brahmana  illustrious  with  Spiritual  Knowledge;  In  the  kingdom  let  there  be  born  a  prince,  a  skilled  archer,  a  hero  and  a  great-­‐car-­‐warrior;  the  milch  cow;  the  ox  capable  of  bearing  burdens;  the  swift  race  horse;  the  industrious  woman;  the  victorious  warrior,  the  youth  fit  for  the  assemble.  To  this  sacrificer  may  a  hero  be  born.  May  Parjanya  send  rain  according  to  our  needs,  may  the  plants  ripen  with  fruit  and  may  acquisition  and  preservation  of  possessions  be  secured  for  us.  

taccha ṃyo rāvṛṇīmahe | gātuṃ ya jñāya | gātuṃ ya jña-pa taye | dai vī sva stir a stu naḥ | sva stir mānu ṣebhyaḥ | ūrdhvaṃ ji gātu bheṣa jam | śanno astu dvi pade | śaṃ catu ṣpade || We  worship  the  Supreme  Being  for  the  welfare  of  all.  May  we  be  free  from  all  miseries  and  shortcomings  so   that  we  may  always     chant   in   the   sacrifices   and   for   the  Lord  of   Sacrifices.  May   the  medicinal   herbs  grow  in  potency,  so  that  diseases  can  be  cured  effectively.  May  the  devas  grant  us  peace.  May  all  human  beings  be  happy,  may  all  the  birds  and  the  beasts  also  be  happy.    Om  Peace  Peace  Peace.  

svāminaḥ manaḥ samādhīyatām — samāhita manasaḥ sma || prasīdantu bhavantaḥ — prasannāḥ sma ||

! Varuṇa udvāsanam ! Sprinkle everything with the holy water:—

apavitraḥ pavitro vā sarvā vasthāṃ gato'pi vā | yassmaret puṇḍarikākṣaṃ sa bāhya abhyantara śuciḥ || Whatever  state  one  may  be  in;  whether  ritually  pure  or  impure,    one  is  immediately  purified  by  remembrance  of  the  Lotus-­‐eyed  Lord  Krsna.

Clearing  of  the  Space  ! With the scattering of yellow mustard seed evict the elementals of the building site.

yad atra saṁsthitaṁ bhūtaṁ sthānam āśritya sarvadā | sthānaṁ tyaktvā tu tat sarvaṁ yatrasthaṁ tatra gacchatu || 5 ||

May  all  those  elementals  who  have  always  inhabited    this  site,  be  pleased  to  depart  hence  to  any  other  site  they  may  choose.  

apakrāmantu bhūtāni piśācāḥ sarvato diśam | sarveṣām avirodhena brahma karma samārabhe || 2 ||

I  am  about  to  begin  a  sacred  duty  so  may  all  the  elementals  and  ghosts  please  depart  to  all  directions  so  that  the  work  may  be  done  unobstructed.  

bhūta preta piśācādya rākṣasā yakṣa guhyakāḥ | sthānāt asmāt vrjantvanyat svikaromi bhuvaṁ tvimāṁ || 3 ||

Elementals,  ghosts,  spirits  and  demons  depart  hence  from  this  site  Please  go  elsewhere,  I  now  acquire  this  site  from  you.  

! Sprinkle the site with pañcagavya.

Kīlakāropaṇam

! At the four corners of the building insert the pegs;

viśantu bhūtale nāgā lokapālāśca sarvataḥ | asmin gṛhe’vatiṣṭhantu āyur bala karās sadā ||

May  the  subterranean  dragons  and  guardian  deities  that    always  dwelling  beneath  this  house  grant    longevity  &  health.  

Bali Pradānam

! Offer balis beside them

agnibhyopyatha sarpebhyo ye cānye tat samāśritā | tebhyo baliṁ prayacchāmi puṇyam odanaṁ uttamam ||

To  all  the  Cosmic  Forces,    serpents  &  other  beings  that  inhabit  this  site  I  make  this  offering  of  pure  and  blessed  food.  

Vāstu Pūjanam

! Place a sapta-darbha kūrca on the maṇḍala. ! Take a flower in the hand recite the dhyāna ślokas and offer the flower on the kūrca.

vāstu martyo mahākāyaḥ kṛṣṇāṅgo rakta-locanaḥ | eka-vaktro dvi-bāhuśca barbarāṅgañca durdharaḥ || āvāhayāmyahaṁ vāstuṁ vajra-deho mahā-balam | viśvambaraṁ nāga-rūpaṁ bhū-bhār-arpita mastakam || āgaccha bhagavan vāsto sarva devair adhiṣṭita | bhagavan kuru kalyāṇam gṛhe-smin sannidho bhava ||

oṁ kṣrāṁ kṣrīṁ kṣrūṁ kṣraiṁ kṣrauṁ kṣraḥ hṛīṁ vāstu-pataye ihāgaccha ihā tiṣṭa || oṁ hṛīṁ vāstu pataye namaḥ ||

O  Vastu  who  appears  in  the  form  of  a  man,  of  aweful  appearance,  having  a  huge  body,  dark    complexion  and  red  eyes.  With  one   face  and  two    arms,    hard  to  contain.   I   Invoke  you  O  Vastu  with  the  adamantine

madhu madhuvātā ṛtāyate madhu kṣaranti sindhavaḥ | mādhvīrnas-santvoṣadhīḥ ||

śarkara āyaṅ-gauḥ pṛśnir-akramīdasanan-mātaraṁ punaḥ | pitarañca prayant-suvaḥ ||

O  Gods  may  we  with  our  ears   listen  to  what   is  good,  and  with  our  eyes  see  what   is  good,  ye  Holy  Ones.  With  limbs  and  bodies  firm  may  we  extolling  you  attain  the  term  of  life  appointed  by  the  Supreme  Lord.  (V.S.25;21)     3. Jaya-śīlā – śaṅkha kumbha

viṣṇo ra rāṭa masi viṣṇo ḥ pṛṣṭhamasi viṣṇo ḥ śñaptrestho viṣṇo s yūra si viṣṇo dhru vam a si vaiṣṇa vam a si viṣṇa ve tvā || Thou  art  the  forehead  of  Vishnu;  thou  art  the  back  of  Vishnu;  ye  two  are  the  corners  of  Vishnu's  mouth.  Thou  art  the  thread  of  Vishnu,  thou  art  the  fixed  point  of  Vishnu.  Thou  art  of  Vishnu;  to  Vishnu  thee.  (TS.  1:2:13)     4. oṁ ya māya tvā ma khāya tvā sūrya sya tvā tapa se | de vas tvā savi tā madhvā’naktu pṛthivyāḥ sa ggas spṛśa spahi | a rcira si śo cira si tapo ’si || For  Yama  thee,  for  Makha  thee.  For  Surya's  fervent  ardour  thee,  May  Savitar  the  God  with  balm  annoint  thee,    guard  thou  the  touches  of  the  earth.  Flame  art  thou,  radiance  art  thou;  heat  art  thou.    (VS.37.11)   5. Pūrṇā-śīlā - samudra kumbha

oṁ i maṁ de vā asapa tnagum su vidhvam maha te kṣa trāya maha te jyeṣṭhyāya maha te jāna rājyāyendra syendri yāya | i mam a muṣya pu tram a muṣyai pu tram a syai vi śa e ṣa vo’mī rājā somo ’smāka ṁ brāhma ṇānāguṁ rājā || O  Ye  gods,  energize  him  that  none  may  be  his  rival,  strengthen  him  for  domination,  mighty  lordship,  him,  son  of  such  a  man  and  such  a  woman  of  such  a  clan.  This  is  your    king  O  Clansmen.  Soma  is  the  Lord  and  Regent  of  us  the  brahmins.          (VS.9.40)

HOMAM Agni-mukham

oṁ bhur bhuvas suvaḥ bala-varddhana nāma agniṁ āvāhayāmi || ! Establish the fire and perform all the rites up to ājyabhāga. ! With each of the following mantras offer four oblations of ghee.

vāsto ṣpate prati jānīhyāsmān svāve śo a namīvo bha vā naḥ | yatvema he prati tanno juṣasva śaṁ no edhi dvipade śaṁ catu ṣpade svāhā || Acknowledge  us  O  Guardian  Spirit  of  the  homestead:  bring  no  disease,    and  give  us  happy  entrance.  Grant  us  that  which  we  seek  of  you,  and  prosper  our  bipeds  and  quadrupeds.    

vāsto ṣpate śa gmayāsaguṁ sadā te sakṣīmahi raṇvayā gātu matyā | āvaha kṣeme u ta yoge va raṁ no yūyaṁ pāta sva stibhi s sadā nas svāhā || Through   your   dear   fellowship   that   brings  welfare,  may  we   be   victorious,   O   Guardian   of   the   Dwelling!  Protect  our  happiness  in  rest  and  labour.  Preserve  us  evermore    with  blessings.  

vāsto ṣpate pra tara ṇo na edhi gobhir aśve bhirindo | a jarāsas te sa khye syāma pi teva pu trān prati no juṣasva svāhā || Protector  of  the  home,  be  our  promoter;  increase  our  wealth  in  cattle  and  steeds.  O  Indu.  May  we  be  ever-­‐youthful  in  your  friendship;  be  pleased  in  us  as  in  his  sons  a  father.  

amī vahā vāṣto ṣpata viśvā rūpāṇyāvi śan | sakhā su śeva edhi nas svāhā || O  Guardian  of  the  Homestead  who  destroys  all  disease  and    manifests  in  manifold  forms,  be  an  auspicious  friend  to  us.  

a bhi vo arce po ṣyāva to nṛn vāsto ṣpati ṁ tvāṣṭāra ṁ rarāṇaḥ | dhanyā sa joṣā dhi ṣaṇā namo bhi r vana spatīr oṣa dhī rāya eṣe svāhā || I   chant   the   luminous   verses   to   you,   the   nourishing   gods.   The   gods   Vastoshpati   and   Tvashtra   for   your  delight.  I  chant  the  verse  with  resignation  to  goddess  Dhishana,  dear  to  all  the  gods  and  the  bestower  of  wealth.  I  chant  to  Soma,  lord  of  delight  and  growth,  in  order  to  obtain  joy.  

vāsto ṣpate dhru vā sthūṇāṁ ‘sa traṁ so myānām | dra pso bhe ttā pu rāṁ śaśva tīnām indro munīnāṁ sakhā svāhā || O  lord  of  the  dwelling,  may  the  pillars  be  strong;  may  it  be  protective  of  the  streams  of  the  Soma-­‐distillers,  Indra  is  the  destroyer  of  the  cities  of  the  titans,  Indra  is  the  friend  forever  of  the  sages.  

! Offer one oblation with each on the names of the maṇḍala devatās.

oṁ aṁśu-māline svāhā | aṁśu-māline idaṁ na mama || jhaṣa-dhvjāya | kumārāya | vināyakāya | aśvibhyām | candrāya | durgāyai | sapta-mātṛbhyo | sthāṇave | viṣṇave | brahmaṇe || indrāya etc.

! Offer 108 oblations with each of the following mantras taking sampātam:—

Pañca Varuṇa Homaḥ

i maṁ me varuṇa śrudhī hava m a dyāca mṛḍaya |

tvām a va syurāca ke svāhā || varuṇāyedam na mama || O Lord Varuna listen now to my invocation. Be gracious even now. I approach you seeking your protection.

tat tvā yāmi brahma ṇā vanda mānas ta dā śāste yaja māno ha virbhi ḥ |

ahe ḍamāno varuṇe ha bo dhyuru śaguṁ sa mā na āyu ḥ pramoṣīs svāhā |

varuṇāyedam na mama || O Varuna! Praised by Vedic hymns, may I reach your refuge for which I long, through these oblations. I offer you abundant praise, withhold your anger now and enlighten us. Hail! ( RV 4.1.5 TS 2.5.12.3)

tvanno agne varu ṇasya vi dvān de vasya heḍo ‘va yāsi siṣṭhāḥ |

yaji ṣṭho vahni tamaś-śośucāno viśvā dveṣāgu ṁsi pramu m ugdhya smat svāhā | agni-varuṇābhyām idaṁ na mama || O Agni! Mollify the anger of the gods and Lord Varuna. The Most Worshipful, the Best-Conveyer, the Most-Resplendent as you are, With these oblations we express our gratitude; turn away from us all them that hate us. Hail! (RV 4.1.4 TS 2.5.12.3)

sa tvanno agne ‘va mo bha vo ti nedi ṣṭho a sya u ṣaso vyu ṣṭau |

ava yakṣva no varu ṇaguṁ rarāṇo vīhi mṛḍīkaguṁ su havo na edhi svāhā |

agni-varuṇābhyām idaṁ na mama || O Agni! Foremost amongst the gods, protect us at dawn and during the day and night. May we never be hindered, grant us ever expanding happiness, O you who are easily invoked. Hail! This is an offering to Agni and Varuna.

tvam a gne a yāsya yāsan manasā hi taḥ |

a yāsan havyam ūhiṣe yāno dhehi bheṣajaggas-svāhā |

agni-ayase idaṁ na mama || O Agni! You are our refuge and mental solace. O Bearer-of-oblations, vouchsafe to us healing remedies. Hail! This is an offering to Agni. (TB 2.4.1.9)

Śīlā-sthāpanam

Saṅkalpam — oṁ pūrvokta guṇa viśeṣeṇa visiṣṭhāyāṁ asyāṁ śubha tithau bhagavad ājñayā bhagavad kaiṅkarya rūpeṇa pañca śīla sthāpanaṁ kariṣye || On  this  auspicious  day  characterized  by  the  afore  mentioned  Astrological  parameters,  with  the  sanction  of  the  Supreme  Lord  and  as  service  to  Him  alone  I  now  perform  the  laying  of  the  five  foundation  stones.  

! In the Isana corner place a silver or gold ananta sesha and invoke vastu purusha:

āvāhayāmyahaṁ devaṁ bhūmiṣṭha cāpyadhomukham | vāstunāthaṁ jagatprāṇaṁ pūrvasyāṁ prathamāśitām ||

I  invoke  thee  O  Deva,  situated  in  the  earth  face  downwards.  O  Vastu  Natha  thou  art  the  life  force  of  the  world.

I   pay  my   obeisance   to   thee  O   Lord   Vastu,  who   art   situated   in   the   earth,   please   grant     ever   increasing    wealth  &  food  in  my  house.   1. nandā-śilā sthāpanam — in the agnikona.

oṁ padmāya namaḥ ||

ābra hman brāhma ṇo bra hma varca sī jāyatām asmin rāṣṭre rāja nya iṣa vya ś śūro mahāra tho jāyatāṁ, dogdhrī dhe nur voḍhā 'na dhvān āśus sapti ḥ pura ndhri yoṣā ji ṣṇū ra the ṣṭhās sa bheyo yuvā'sya yaja mānasya vīro jāyatāṁ, nikāme ni kāme naḥ pa rjanyo varṣatu pha linyo na oṣa dhayaḥ pacyantāṁ yoga kṣe mo na ḥ kalpatām ||

e tan te deva savitur ya jñaṁ prāha r bṛha spata ye bra hmaṇe | tena ya jñam a va

tena ya jña-pa tiṁ te na mām a va || mano jūtir ju ṣatām ājya sya bṛha spati r

ya jñaguṁ i manta no tvariṣṭa ṁ ya jñaguṁ sami mam da dhātu | viśve de vāsa

i ha mādayantāguṁ oṁ 3 prati ṣṭha |

O  Lord  Savitar,  this  sacrifice  of  yours  they  have  proclaimed  unto  Brihaspati  the  brahmin  priest.  Therefore  protect  the  sacrifice,  protect  the  Lord  of  the  sacrifice,  protect  me.  The  rapid  flow  of  the  ghee  brings  him  delight.  Brihaspati  extend  this  act  of  worship.  May  the  sacrifice  be  restored  complete.  Here  let  the  All-­‐gods  rejoice.  Om  be  thou  established!  VS.2;12

oṁ āyuḥ kāmaṁ śriyaṁ dehi deva vāsini nandini | asmin rakṣā tvayā kāryā sadā veśmani yatnataḥ ||

O  Nandini  in  who  the  devas  dwell,  grant  us  longevity,  fulfillment  of  desires  and  prosperity.  Remain  here  protecting  this  building  with  all  your  power.   2. bhadra-śīlā sthāpanam — in the nai®rti kona

oṁ mahāpadmāya namaḥ ||

bha draṁ karṇe bhiḥ śṛṇu yāma devā bha draṁ pa śyemākṣibhi r-yaja trāḥ | sthi rair-aṅga is-tuṣṭu vāguṁ sa sta nūbhiḥ vyaśe ma de vahi ta ṁ yadāyu ḥ ||

e tan te deva ………………. oṁ 3 prati ṣṭha ||

oṁ bhūr bhuvas suvaḥ ādhāraśilo pratiṣṭitā bhave ||

bhadre tvaṁ sarvdā bhadraṁ lokānāṁ kuru kāśyapi | āyurdā kāmadā devi sukhadā ca sadā bhava || tvām atra sthāpayāmyadya gṛhe’smin bhadra-dāyine |

O  Bhadra,  scion  of  Kashyapa,  grant  eternal  auspiciousness  to  all  the  realms,  Grant  longevity,  fulfillment  of  desires  and  perpetual    happiness  O  Devi.  I  establish  thee  here  in  this  building  O  Giver  of  Auspiciousness.   3. jayā-śīlā sthāpanam — in vāyukona

oṁ śaṅkhāya namaḥ ||

viṣṇo ra rāṭa masi viṣṇo ḥ pṛṣṭhamasi viṣṇo ḥ śñaptrestho viṣṇo s yūra si viṣṇo dhru vam a si vaiṣṇa vam a si viṣṇa ve tvā ||

oṁ garga gotra samudbhūtāṁ trinetrāṁ ca caturbhujām | gṛhe’smin sthāpayamyadya jayāṁ cāru-locanām || nityaṁ jayāya bhūtyai ca svāmino bhava bhārgavī |

O  Scion  of  Garga,  three-­‐eyed  and  four-­‐armed,  O  Jaya  of  beautiful  eyes,  I  establish  thee  here  today  in  this  building.  Grant  auspiciousness  and  perpetual  success  to  the  master  of  this  house.

4. rikta-śīlā sthāpanam — In īśāna-kona.

trya ṁbakaṁ yajāmahe suga ndhiṁ pu ṣṭi vardha nam | ūrvāru kam-iva bandha nān mṛtyor mu kṣīya māmṛtāt ||

We  offer  our  homage  to  Lord  Siva,  sweet  augmenter  of  prosperity,  as  a  cucumber  from  its  stem  may  we  be  severed  from  the  bonds  of  death,  and  attain  immortality.  V.S.  3;60  

e tan te deva ………………. oṁ 3 prati ṣṭha ||

oṁ bhūr bhuvas suvaḥ ādhāraśilo pratiṣṭitā bhave ||

oṁ rikte tvaṁ rikta-doṣaghne siddhi mukti prade śubhe | sarvadā sarva doṣaghni tiṣṭhāsmiṁs tatra nandani ||

O  Rikta  thou  destroyest  the  inauspiciousness  of  numbers,  and  grantest  success  and  freedom,  may  thou  established  here    perpetualy    destroy  all  forces  of  negativity.   5. pûrṇa-śīlā sthāpanam — In the centre of the house

oṁ sarvatobhadrāya namaḥ ||

oṁ pūrṇā da rvi parā pata supūrṇā puna rāpa ta | va sneva vikrīṇāvahā iṣa m ūrja guṁ śata-krato ||

O  Ladle,  fly  away  filled,  and  well  filled  do  thou  fly  back.  Like  wares,  O  Shatakratu,  let  us  barter  nourishment  and  strength.  VS.3;49  

e tan te deva ………………. oṁ 3 prati ṣṭha ||

oṁ bhūr bhuvas suvaḥ ādhāraśilo pratiṣṭitā bhave ||

pūrṇe tvaṁ sarvadā pūrṇān lokānāṁ kuru kāśyapi | āyurdā kāmadā devi dhanadā sutadā tathā || gṛhe dhārā vāstu-mayī vāstu-dīpena samyutā | tvāmṛte nāsti jagatām ādhāraśca jagat priye ||

O  Purna  thou  art  eternally  whole,  make  this  world  complete  O  scion  of  Kashyapa,  Grant  longevity,  fulfillment  of  desires,  wealth  and  sons  O  Devi.  Thou  art  the  foundation  of  this  house  pervaded  by  the  energy  of  Vastu.  Thou  art  immortal  the  foundation  of  the  Universe  beloved  in  the  world.  

Dakṣiṇa Dānam

adya kṛtaitac chīlanyāsa karmaṇaḥ sāṅga phala prāptaye sād guṇyārthaṁ ca ācāryādibhyo dakṣiṇām sampradade || ! Loka-kṣema prārthana. ! Devatā visarjanam ! Sprinkle water from the śānti kalaśa over the heads of the yajamana and his wife. ! Āśirvādam and brāhmaṇa bhojanam

j VĀSTU ŚĀNTIḤ PRAYOGAḤ j

Please note — The Vāstu Śānti can be done with or without Homa, in this section we give first the Puja and then after the Homa. ! The family assemble in front of the house, at an auspicious moment, while chanting the

following shlokas, they enter the building with the sumangalis going in front carrying the purna kumbha and other auspicious articles.

! If the house is already lived in then this can be omitted.

pūrṇam nāri pra bha ra ku mbham e tam ghṛtasya dhārām a mṛte na saṁbhṛtām i māṁ pātṛn a mṛte nā samaṅgdhi iṣṭā-pūrtam a bhi ra kṣātyenām || Bring  forward,  O  lady,  the  well-­‐filled  pitcher,  and  the  streamsof  light  mixed  with  immortality.  Sprinkle  these  drinkers  (gods)  with  a  draught  of  Amrit.  May  all  our  meritorious  deeds  of  both  personal  and  public  fulfilment  guard  this  dwelling.  (A.V.  3:12:8)  

i mapa ḥ pra bha rāmy-aya kṣmā ya kṣma nāśa nīḥ | gṛhān upa pra sīdāmy-a mṛte na sa hāgninā || Water  that  destroys  disease,  free  from  all  contamination,  here  I  bring.  With  Agni,  the  immortal  one,  I  enter  and  possess  the  house.  (A.V.3:12:9)  

Svasti Sukta

sva sti no mimītām a śvinā bhaga ḥ sva sti de vyadi tir ana rvaṇa ḥ | sva sti pūṣā asu ro dadhātu naḥ sva sti dyāvā pṛthivī su ce tunā || May  Bhaga  and  the  Asvins  grant  us  health  and  wealth,  and  Goddess  Aditi  and  he  whom  none  resist.  The  Asura  Pusan  grant  us  all  prosperity,  and  Heaven  and  Earth  most  wise  grant  us  happiness.  

sva staye vāyum upa bravāmahai somaguṁ sva sti bhuva nasya yaspati ḥ | bṛha spatiguṁ sarva gaṇagu ṁ sva staye sva staya ādi tyāso bhavantu naḥ || Let  us  solicit  Vayu  for  prosperity,  and  Soma  who  is  Lord  of  all  the  world  for  weal;  For  weal  Brhaspati  with  all  his  company.  May  the  Adityas  bring  us  health  and  happiness.  

viśve de vā no a dyā sva staye vaiśvāna ro vasu ra gnis sva staye | de vā a vantvṛbhava s sva staye sva sti no ru draḥ pātvaguṁ ha saḥ || May  all  the  Gods,  may  Agni  the  beneficent,  God  of  all  human  beings,  this  day  be  with  us  for  our  weal.  Help  us  the  Rbhus,  the  Divine  Ones,  for  our  good.  May  Rudra  bless  and  keep  us  from  calamity.  

sva sti mi trā varuṇā sva sti pa thye revati | sva sti na indra ścāgniśca sva sti no adite kṛdhi || Prosper  us,  Mitra,  Varuna.  O  wealthy  Pathya,  prosper  us.  Indra  and  Agni,  prosper  us;  prosper  us  you,  O  Aditi.  

sva sti panthām anu carema sūryā candra masāviva | puna rdada tā ‘ghna tā jāna tā saṁ ga memahi ||

The Boiling of Milk. ! A new pot filled with milk is placed upon the stove and brought to the boil and allowed to overflow.

i haiva dhru vā prati tiṣṭha śāle’śvāvati goma tī sūnṛtāvati | ūrja svatī ghṛtava tī paya sva ty ucchra yasva maha te saubha gāya || Even  here,  O  House,  stand  on  firm  foundation,  filled  with  life-­‐energy,  frequented  by  knowledgeable  and  truthful  people.  Abundant  in  nourishment,  in  milk  and  fatness,  rise  up  for  great  joy  and  good  fortune.  (A.V.3:12:2)

Saṅkalpam — Hariḥ oṁ tat sat; govinda, govinda. govinda, mama yajamānasya upāta samasta durita-kṣaya dvārā śrīman parameśvara/nārāyaṇa prītyārtham (bhagavad ājñayā bhagavad kaiṅkarya rūpeṇa) kariṣyamāṇa asmin vāstu śanti homa karmaṇi nirvighneṇa parisamāpty-artham ādau vighneśavara pūjāṁ kariṣye || Hari  Om,  Govinda,  Today   for  absolution  of  all  my  patron's   sins  and   in  order   to   invoke   the  Grace  of   the  Supreme   Lord   on   this   auspicious   day,   in   this   Vastu   Ceremony   about   to   be   performed   I   first   offer   my  homage  to  Ganesha      for  the  successful  and  unobstructed  completion  of  the  rites.

Pradhāna Saṅkalpam

When  the  lotus  feet  of  the  Lord  of  Lakshmi  are  recalled  to  mind,  there  is  a  good  ascendant,    a  good  day,  strength  of  constelation  and  Moon,  power  of  wisdom,  energy  of  divinity.

oṁ kṣrāṁ kṣrīṁ kṣrūṁ kṣraiṁ kṣrauṁ kṣraḥ hṛīṁ vāstu-pataye ihāgaccha ihā tiṣṭa || oṁ hṛīṁ vāstu pataye namaḥ ||

O  Vastu  who  appears  in  the  form  of  a  man,  of  aweful  appearance,  having  a  huge  body,  dark    complexion  and  red  eyes.  With  one   face  and  two    arms,    hard  to  contain.   I   Invoke  you  O  Vastu  with  the  adamantine  body  of  great  strength,  clothed  in  space,    manifest  as  a  Naga,  supporting  the  earth  on  your  head.  Please  come   hither   O   Lord   Vastu,   the   one   in  whom   all   the   Devas   are   established,   grant   us   your   Grace   and   be  present  in  this  homestead.

Prārthana

vāstu martyo mahākāyaḥ kṛṣṇāṅgo rakta-locanaḥ | eka-vaktro dvi-bāhuśca barbarāṅgañca durdharaḥ ||

O  Vastu  who  appears  in  the  form  of  a  man,  of  aweful  appearance,  having  a  huge  body,  dark    complexion  and  red  eyes.  With  one  face  and  two    arms,    incomprehensible.  

pūjito'si mayā vāsto homādyair arcanaiḥ śubhaiḥ | prasīda pāhi viśveśa dehi me gṛhajaṁ sukham ||

You  has  been    propitiated  by  my  O  Vastu,  through  these  various    auspicious  offerings.  Have  compassion  on  me  and  bless  me  Lord  of  Space,  grant  me  domestic  happiness.  

vāstu-deva namastubhyaṁ bhūśayyā'bhirata prabho | mad gṛhaṁ dhana-dhānyādyaiḥ samṛddhaṁ kuru sarvadā ||

Obeisance  to  you  O    Lord  Vastu,    pervading    this  space.  Please  grant  me  the    perpetual  increase  of  domestic  prosperity  

deveśa vāstu-puruṣa sarva vighna-vināśaka | śāntiṁ kuru sukhaṁ dehi sarva kāmān prayaccha me ||

tat tvā yāmi brahma ṇā vanda mānas ta dā śāste yaja māno ha virbhi ḥ | ahe ḍamāno varuṇe ha bo dhyuru śaguṁ sa mā na āyu ḥ pramoṣīs svāhā || varuṇāyedam na mama ||

tvanno agne varu ṇasya vi dvān de vasya heḍo ‘va yāsi siṣṭhāḥ | yaji ṣṭho vahni tama ś-śośucāno viśvā dveṣāgu ṁsi pramu m ugdhya smat svāhā || agni-varuṇābhyām idaṁ na mama ||

sa tvanno agne ‘va mo bha vo ti nedi ṣṭho a sya u ṣaso vyu ṣṭau | ava yakṣva no varu ṇaguṁ rarāṇo vīhi mṛḍīkaguṁ su havo na edhi svāhā || agni-varuṇābhyām idaṁ na mama ||

tvam a gne a yāsya yāsan manasā hi taḥ | a yāsan ha vyam ūhiṣe yāno dhehi bheṣajaggas-svāhā || agni-ayase idaṁ na mama ||

! Offer the jayādi oblations. Uttarāṅgam

oṁ prajāpate na tvad e tānyanyo viśvā jātāni pari tā ba bhūva | yat kāmas te juhu mas tanno astu va yaggas syāma pata yo rayīṇāgass svāhā || prajāpataya idaṁ na mama || O  Lord  of  Beings,  you  alone  can  comprehend  all  these  created  forms,  and  none  beside  you.  Grant  us  our  heart's  desire  when  we  invoke  you,  may  we  become  the  lords  of  rich  possessions.  (VS.  10;20)  

oṁ bhūs- svāhā | agnaye idaṁ na mama || oṁ bhuvas- svāhā | vāyave idaṁ na mama || oṁ suvas- svāhā | sūryāya idaṁ na mama ||

yad a sya karma ṇo ’tyarīrica ṁ yad vā nyūnam i hāka ram | agniṣṭa t sviṣṭa -kṛd vidvān sarvaguṁ svi ṣṭa gam suhu tam karotu svāhā | agnaye sviṣṭakṛtedam na mama || Whatever   there  has  been  done   that   is     superfluous    or  deficient   in   this   sacrifice,  you  know   it  all,  please  accept  it  as  complete  O  Agni  Svistakrta.  

Paridhi pariharaṇam;

! Offer the paridhis into the fire after having dipped them in ghee; the middle one first followed by the three others.

Samsrāva Homaḥ

! Fill the sruva with ghee then cover with the sruk then offer a continuous stream of ghee;

svāhā || vasubhyo rudrebhya āditebhyaḥ saṁsrāva bhāgebhyaḥ idaṁ na mama ||

om bhūr-bhuvas-suvas-svāhā | prajāpataye idaṁ na mama ||

Prāyaścitta Saṅkalpam — oṁ pūrvokta guṇa viśeṣeṇa visiṣṭhāyāṁ asyāṁ śubha tithau mama upāta samasta durita-kṣaya dvārā [bhagavad ājñayā bhagavad kaiṅkarya rūpeṇa] asmin vāstu homa karmaṇi avijñāta prāyaścitta ādīni kariṣye || On  this  auspicious  day  characterized  by  the  afore  mentioned  Astrological  parameters,  with  the  sanction  of  the  Supreme  Person  and  as  service  to  Him  alone  ,  in  this  rite  of    VASTU  SHANTI    I  shall  now  make  the  atonement  offerings.  

anājñātaṁ yad ajñātaṁ yājñasya kri yate mithu | agne tada sya ka lpa ya tvaguṁ hi vettha ya thā tathagass svāhā || agnayedam na mama || Whatever    error  I  may  have  committed  in  this  sacrifice,  knowingly  or  unknowingly,  O  Agni  you  know  full  well,  please  amend  it  and  make  it  perfect.  (TB.3.7.11.5.)  

puru ṣa sammito ya jño ya jñaḥ puru ṣa sammitaḥ | agne tada sya ka lpa ya tvaguṁ hi vettha yathā tathagass svāhā || agnayedam na mama || The  Supreme  Lord  is  coequal  with  Sacrifice,  the  Sacrifice  is  coequal  with  the  Lord.  O  Agni  you  know  full  well,  please  amend  it  and  make  it  perfect.  (TB.3.7.11.5)  

yat pāka tra manasā dīna da kṣā na | ya jñasya ma nvate martāsaḥ | agni ṣṭad hotā kra tu -vid vijānan yaji ṣṭho de vāguṁ kra tu śo ya jāti svāhā || agnayedam na mama || Since  we  humans    of  feeble  energies,  with  immature  minds,  are  unacquainted  with  the  correct  procedure  of   sacrifice,  may   the  Mystic  Fire  who   is   skilled   in   the  rites,  well  knowing  all   that   is   to  be  done,   the  best  offerer,  offer  worship  (on  our  behalf)  according  to  fit  season.    (RV.10.2.5a)  

oṁ bhūs- svāhā | agnaye idaṁ na mama || oṁ bhuvas- svāhā | vāyave idaṁ na mama || oṁ suvas- svāhā | sūryāya idaṁ na mama ||

Saṅkalpam — asmin vāstu homa karmaṇi madhye saṁbhāvita samasta doṣa prāyaścittārthaṁ sarva prāyaścittam hoṣyāmi || For  all  shortcomings  that  occurred  during  the  course  of  this  sacrifice  I  now  offer    final  atonement  and  expiation.

Saṅkalpam — oṁ pūrvokta guṇa viśeṣeṇa visiṣṭhāyāṁ asyāṁ śubha tithau mama upāta samasta durita-kṣaya dvārā [bhagavad ājñayā bhagavad kaiṅkarya rūpeṇa] asmin vāstu homa karmaṇas saṁpūrṇa phala prāptyārthaṁ mṛḍa nāmāgnau pūrṇāhutiṁ hoṣyāmi | tadanantaraṁ sāṅgata siddhyarthaṁ vasorddhārāṁ hoṣyāmi ||

oṁ pūrṇāhu tim u tta māṁ ju hoti | sarvaṁ vai pūrṇā-hu tiḥ | sarva m evāpno ti | atho i yaṁ vai pūrṇā-hu tiḥ | a syām e va prati-tiṣṭhati svāhā || agnaye vauṣaṭ ||

He  sacrifices  the  best  of  final  oblations;  Totality    is  the  final  oblation;    through  that  everything  is  obtained  ;    therefore  is  this,    that  final  oblation;  in  this  is  it  established.  

Vasordhāra Homaḥ

oṁ sapta te agne sa midha s sa pta ji hvās sapta ṛṣayaḥ sapta dhāma pri yāṇi | sa pta hotrā sapta -dhā tvā ya ja nti sa pta yoni r āpṛṇasva ghṛte na svāhā || agnaye saptavatedaṁ na mama || Seven  are  your  faggots  O  Agni,  seven  your  tongues,  seven  the  seers  and  seven  the  beloved  locations.  Seven  are  the  priests  that  oblate  to  you,  seven  are  the  sources,  with  this  oblation  of  ghee  grant  us  protection.    

! Prāṇāyāma & Pariśecanam

adi te’nva magass sthāḥ | anuma te’nva magass sthāḥ | sara sva te’nva magass sthāḥ | deva savi taḥ prāsāvīḥ ||

Aditi   has   granted   us   permission,   Anumati   has   granted   permission.   Sarasvati   has   granted   permission,  Deva  Savita  has  impelled  us.  

! Valediction of Varuna from the pranita patra

varuṇāya  namaḥ  sakala  arādhanai  svarcitam  |  yathā-­‐sthānam  ….  O  Varuna  I  offer  you  all  my  homage,  please  depart  where  you  will,  for  Glory,  well-­‐being  and  the  hope  that  you  will  return.

prācyāṁ di śī de vā ṟtvijo mārjayantām || In  the  eastern  quarter    may  the  gods,  the  priests  make  me  bright.  dakṣiṇa sya di śī māsāḥ pi taro mārjayantām || In  the  southern  quarter  may  the  months,  the  manes  make  me  illustrious.  pratīcyāṁ di śī gṟhāḥ paśavo mārjayantām || In  the  western  quarter  may  the  houses,  the  cattle  make  me  illustrious.  udīcyāṁ di śyāpa oṣa dhayo mārjayantām || In  the  northern  quarter  may  the  waters,  the  plants,  the  trees  make  me  illustrious.  ūrdhvāyāṁ di śī ya jña sa ṁva tsaro ya jña-patir mārjayantām || In  the  zenith  may  the  sacrifice,  the  year,  the  Lord  of  Sacrifice  make  me  illustrious.

We  cognize  the  Mystic  Fire  within  the  soul  of  all  beings,  may  that  Illuminator  enlighten  us.    

Homage  to  Agni  agne naya su pathā rāye a smān viśvāni deva va yunāni vi dvan | yu yo ∞ya smaj-ju hurāṇam eno ∫ūyi ṣṭhānte nama uktim vi∞ema || oṁ agnaye namaḥ | agniṁ ātmanyudvāsayāmi || O  Refulgent  Agni  you  possess  all  kinds  of  knowledge  and  are  therefore  wise.  Lead  us  in  a  goodly  path  to  the    wealth  of  Beatitude.    Keep  away  from  us  corrupting  sin  which  stands  in  the  way  of  our  attainment.  We  offer  you  many  salutations.       Om  Obeisance  to  Agni  -­‐  I  return  you  to  your  place  within  my  heart    

Prārthana namaste gārhapatyāya namaste dakṣiṇāgnaye | namaḥ āhavanīyāya mahā vedyai namo namaḥ ||

Reverence  to  the  Garhapatya  fire  ,  reverence  to  the  dakshina  fire.  Reverence  to  the  Ahavaniya  fire  and  to  the  Main  Altar  I  pay  repeated  reverence.  

kāṇḍa-dvayopapādhyāya karma brahma svarūpiṇam | svargāpavarga rūpāya yajñeśāya namo namaḥ ||

I  pay  my  obeisances  to  the  Lord  of  Sacrifices  who  is  manifest  in  the  form  of  the  twin  divisions  of  the  Vedas  relating   to  Action   (karma-­‐kanda)  and   to  Knowledge   (Brahma-­‐kanda)    which  are   the   causes   of   heaven  and  liberation    respectively.  

yajñeśācyuta govinda mādhava ananta keśava | kṛṣṇa viṣṇo hṛṣīkeśa vāsudeva namo'stu te ||

Salutations  to  you  O  Krishna,  the  Lord  of  Sacrifice,  The  All-­‐pervading  One,  the  Lord-­‐of-­‐the-­‐senses,  the  Eternal  One,  the  Consort  of  Lakshmi,    the  Indweller,  and  Lord  of  the  Universe.  

mantra hīnaṁ kriyā hīnaṁ bhakti hīnaṁ hutāśana | yad hutaṁ tu mayā deva paripūrṇaṁ tad astu te ||

Deficient  as  this  sacrifice  is    in  formulae,    methodology  and  devotion  O  Agni!  Whatever  I  have  offered  my  Lord,    let  it  be  acceptable  to  you.  

prāyaścitta anya śeṣāṇi tapaḥ karmātma kāni vai | yāni teṣām aśeṣāṇāṁ kṛṣṇa anusmaraṇaṁ param ||

There  is  no  other  expiation  in  austerities    and  other  actions  whereby  everything  that  is    deficient  becomes  whole  other  than  by  the  remembrance    of    the  name  of  Krishna.  

yasya smṛtya cā nāmokta tapaḥ yajña kriyādiṣu | nyūnam sampūrṇatām yāti sadyo vande tam acyutam ||

! To the west of the well or tank erect the maṇḍapa with a madhyavedi and the grahavedi in

the NE. ! On the center vedi draw the sarvatobhadra maṇḍapa, from the left hand side establish four

kalaśas at the corners of the vedi. ! In the center establish the śānti kalaśa.

1. Anujñā

Saṅkalpam (for a well) hariḥ oṁ tatsat | …….. mama yajamāna śrī ________ śarmaṇaḥ etat kūpādhikaraṇaka pratyeka jala bindu sama-saṅkhyaka śata varṣāvicchinna svarga kāmaḥ kūpa jalāśayotsarga karma ahaṁ kariṣye || On  this  auspicious  day  on  behalf  of  my  patron  sri  ........................    we  perform  the  consecration  &  dedication  of  this  well,  may  he    dwell  in  heaven  for  as  many  years  as  there  are  drops  of  water  in  this  well.   Saṅkalpam (for a tank) hariḥ oṁ tatsat .......... mama yajamāna śrī ________śarmaṇaḥ catur-arṇavānta mahī dāna janya puṇya sama puṇya prāpti divya kāma samanvitātma kartṛ varuṇa loka gamana kāmaḥ puṣkariṇī jalāśayotsarga makhenā'haṁ yakṣye || On   this   auspicious   day   on   behalf   of   my   patron   sri   ........................     we   perform   the   consecration   and  dedication  of  this  tank.    Through  this  auspicious  act,  may  he  obtain  the  same  merit  as  accrues  to  one  who    gives  away  land  surrounded  by  four  seas,  and  may  he  obtain  to  the  region  of  Lord  Varuna.    2. Karmāṅga Abhyudayam [nāndī]

oṁ eko viṣṇur mahad bhūtaṁ pṛthak bhūtāny anekaśaḥ | trīn lokān vyāpya bhūtātmā bhuṅkte viśvabhug avyayaḥ ||

Vishnu  is  the  unique  and  unparalleled  deity  in  that  he  pervades  the  great  elements  of  different  kinds  and  the  three  worlds  of  existence.  He  is  the  Supersoul  of  all  beings  and  their  Protector.  He    transcends  all  of  them  and  is  not  touched  by  their  defects  thus  He  enjoys  supreme  bliss.  

oṁ namo brahmaṇya devāya go-brāhmaṇa hitāya ca | jagad-hitāya kṛṣṇāya govindāya namo namaḥ || oṁ devatābhyaḥ pitṛbhyaśca mahāyogībhya eva ca | namas svāhāyai svadhāyai nityam eva namo namaḥ ||

Saṅkalpaḥ Hariḥ oṁ tatsat | govinda ………….. saṅkalpita karmāṅgatayā abhyudayaṁ hiraṇya-rūpeṇa adya kariṣye || apa upaspṛśya || On  this  auspicious  day  with  the  sanction  of  the  Supreme  Being  and  as  service  to  Him  alone,    [in  order  to  absolve  myself  of  all  sins  and  to  please  the  Supreme  Lord]      I  now,  as  an  ancilliary  to  ………….  perform  the  memorial  rite  to  my  ancestors  through  charity.

hiraṇyagarbha garbhasthaṁ hema bīja vibhāvasoḥ | ananta puṇya phaladam ataḥ śāntiṁ prayaccha me ||

adya saṅkalpita …. karmāṅga bhūte’sminn abhyudaye satya-vasu saṁjñaka viśvedeva – abhyudaya saṁrakṣaka śrī mahā viṣṇu sahita, nāndī śobhana devatā prītyarthaṁ, idaṁ āgneyaṁ hiraṇyaṁ satya-vasu saṁjñaka viśvedeva abhyudaya saṁrakṣaka śrī mahā viṣṇu sahita, nāndī śobhana devatā svarūpebhyāh brāhmaṇebhyaḥ saṁpradade na mama ||

nāndī śobhana devatāḥ pitaraḥ prīyantām || ! give the money to the brahmins

svāminaḥ mayā hiraṇyena kṛtaṁ abhyudayikaṁ saṁpannam | [susaṁpannam] || May  this  memorial  rite  to  my  ancestors  done  through  these  offerings  be  acceptable.  

iḍā deva hūr manu r ya jñanīḥ bṛha spati ḥ uktāma dāni śa gu ṁ si ṣa t viśve de vaḥ sūkta -vācaḥ pṛthi vi mātar mā mā higuṁ sīḥ madhu maniṣye madhu janiṣye madhu vakṣyāmi madhu vadiṣyāmi madhu -matiṁ deve bhyaḥ vāca m udyāsaguṁ śu śru ṣeṇyāṁ ma nu ṣye bhyas taṁ mā de vā a vantu śobhāya i pi taro'nu madantu || Ida  summons     the  gods,  Manu     leads   the  sacrifice,    Brihaspati  recites   the  chants  and  acclamations.  The  All-­‐gods    recite    the  hymns,  O  Earth  Mother  do  not  harm  me.  Of  sweetness  shall  I  think,  sweetness  shall  I  produce,  sweetness  shall  I  proclaim,  sweetness  shall  I  speak,  may  I  utter  speech  full  of  sweetness  for  the  gods  and  acceptable  to  men,  may  the  gods  aid  me  to  radiance  may  the  manes  rejoice  in  me.    TS.3.3.2    iḍā ehi | a diti ehi | sara sva tyehi | śobhanaṁ śobhanam | Come  O  Ida!  Come  Sarasvati!    May  all  be  well

prasīdantu bhavantaḥ | [prasannāḥ smaḥ] Reverend  sirs  may  you  be  gratified.  

śrīrastviti bhavanto bruvantu || [astu śrīḥ] Reverend  sirs  may  we  obtain  wellbeing.  

puṇyāha bhavanto bruvantu || [puṇyāham] Reverend  sirs  may  we  be  sanctified.  

ṛdhyāsmā ha vyair nama so pa sadya | mi tram de vaṁ mi tra dheya ṁ no astu | a nūrādhān ha viṣā va rdhaya ntaḥ | śa taṁ jīvema śa rada s-savīrāḥ ||

[dīrghāyuṣyam-astu] || TB.3.1.2.1a May  we  prosper,  having  approached  with  oblations  with  salutations,  may  the  radiant  Supreme  Being  be  our  support.  May  His  bliss-­‐bestowing  Grace  with  oblations  ever  increase,  may  we  live  a  hundred  autumns  in  the  company  of    our  heroes.

I  offer  obeisance  to  the  assembly,  homage  to  the  Lord  of  the  assembly,  salutations  to  the    friends  who  go  before,  homage  to  Heaven  and  to  Earth.    T.  S.  3;2;4  

sapratha sa bhāṁ me gopāya | ya ca sabhyās sabhā sada ḥ | tān i ndriyāva ta kuru | sa rvam āyu r u pāsatām ||

May  this  august  assembly  afford  me  its  protection,  all  those  who  are  present  here.    May  they  protect  my    sense  organs,  I  offer  my  lifelong  obeisance.     TB.  1.1.10.3.5   3. Bhūtotsādhanam

! Scatter mustard seeds over all the land while reciting the following slokas and ringing the bell.

4. Vāstu Pūjā

! If possible establish a vastu-vedi or invoke vastu into a ghata or a salagrama.

oṁ hṛīṁ caturbhujaṁ mahākāyaṁ jaṭāmaṇḍita mastakam | trilocanaṁ karālāsyaṁ hāra kuṇḍala śobhitam || lambodaraṁ dīrghakarṇaṁ lomaśaṁ pītavāsasam | gadā triśūla paraśuṁ khaṭvāṅgaṁ dadhataṁ karaiḥ || asi carma dharaiḥ dhīraiḥ kapilāsyādibhirvṛtam | śatrūṇām antakaṁ sākṣādudyadāditya sannibham || dhyāyet devaṁ vāstu patiṁ kūrma padmāsana sthitam ||

I   visualize   Vastu   Purusha   the   composite   force   of   the   construction,   seated   in   lotus   posture,   having  expansive  body,    four  arms,  matted  locks,  three  eyed,  awesome  bedecked  with  necklace  and  earrings,  pot-­‐bellied,     long   ears,     hairy   robed   in   yellow.   In   his   four   hands   he   holds,   a   mace,   trident,   axe,   and  khatvangam,  the  warrior  holding  a  sword  and  shield,  surrounded  by  Kapila  and  the  others,  as  radiant  as  the  rising  sun,  the  vanquisher  of  all  forces  of  chaos.  

oṁ kṣrāṁ kṣrīṁ kṣrūṁ kṣraiṁ kṣrauṁ kṣraḥ hrīṁ vāstupate ihā gaccha ihā tiṣṭha ||

oṁ hrīṁ vāstupataye namaḥ || Vāstu Arādhanam

! Offer the 16 upacaras — puṣpai pūjayāmi:

asi carma dharāya namaḥ | kapilāsyāya | piṅgakeśāya | bhīṣaṇāya | raktalocanāya |

5. Devatā Āvāhanam

! Then offer puja to ganapati and vishnu, the navagrahas and the dikpalakas.

svāminaḥ sarva-jaganāthāḥ yāvāt pūjāvasānakam | tāvāt yūyam prīti bhāvena kumbhe/maṇḍale sannidhim kuruta || āvāhitā bhavata | sthāpitā bhavata | sannidhā bhavata | sannirudhā bhavata | sannihitā bhavata | avaguṇṭhitā bhavata | prasīdata || Upacāras — āvāhitānāṁ sarvāsāṁ devatānāṁ āsanam samarpayāmi | arghyam samarpayāmi ................... puṣpamālikām samarpayāmi | puṣpai pūjayāmi ||

6. Yupa Sthāpanam

! In the NE. corner of the well area dig a pit and place five ratnas in it and erect a yupa.

7. Varuṇa Āvāhanam

! In a kumbha of water invoke varuna;

i maṁ me varuṇa śrudhī hava m a dyāca mṛḍaya | tvām a va syurāca ke ||

tat tvā yāmi brahma ṇā vanda mānas ta dā śāste yaja māno ha virbhi ḥ |

ahe ḍamāno varuṇe ha bo dhyuru śaguṁ sa mā na āyu ḥ pramoṣīḥ || O  Lord  Varuna   listen   now   to  my   invocation.   Be   gracious   even   now.   I   approach   you   seeking   your  protection.  O  Varuna!  Praised  by  Vedic  hymns,  may  I  reach  your  refuge    for  which  I   long,  through  these  oblations.  I  offer  you  abundant  praise,  withhold  your  anger  now  and  enlighten  us.  Hail!  (  RV  4.1.5    TS  2.5.12.3)  

oṁ āyāhi bhagavan deva toya mūrte jaleśvara | śaṅkha kundendu varṇābha makara-dhvaja pāśa-dhṛk || yajñe tu saritāṁ nātha sarva pāpa praṇāśana | mayāsmin nimite kūpe sānnidhyam upakalpaya ||

oṁ varuṇa ihāgaccha iha tiṣṭha O  Lord  Varuna  All-­‐pervading  Lord  of  truth  in  the  form  of  vapour,  the  colour  of  white  conch,  bearing  the  noose  of  attachment  and    waving  the  banner  of  the  crocodile.  O  Lord  of  rivers  absolve  us  of  our  sins,  and  please  take  up  thy  abode  in  these  waters.   Having invoke Varuna offer 16 upacaras with the mula-mantra – (oṁ vaṁ varuṇāya namaḥ ) 8. Nāga pūja

oṁ ananto vāsukiścaiva karkoṭastakṣakastathā |

I   salute   the   eight   categories   of   dragons   who   represent   the   embodiment   of   wisdom;   ananta,   vasuki,  karkota,  takshaka,  nagapadma,  mahapadma,  shankha  and  kulisha,  and  all  those  dragons  having  poison  as  a  weapon,  I  devotedly  offer  my  obeisance,  please  protect  me  always.  

oṁ anantādi nāgā ihā gacchata ihā tiṣṭhata ! Smear the kupa with pancagavya ! Offer pancopacara with the mula mantra;

oṁ kūpajalāśayāya namaḥ

oṁ hriyai namaḥ | oṁ śriyai | śacyai | medhāyai | viśvāyai | lakṣmyai | 9. Pradhāna homaḥ

! Varuṇa sūktam with caru made of barley

u ddutta maṁ va ruṇa pāśa m a smad avāgha ṁ vima dhyama guṁ śra thāya | athā va yaṁ āditya vra te tavānāgaso adi taye syāma || 1 || Varuna,   from   the   upmost   noose   release   us,   let   down   the   lowest   and   remove   the   midmost.   So   in   the  Dharma   may   we     become   faultless   and   achieve   the   state   of   undivided   consciousness,   O   you   who   are  undifferentiated.    (V.S.  12;12)   asta bhnādyām ṛṣa bho a ntari kṣa m ami mīta vari māṇa ṁ pṛthi vyā | asīdad viśvā bhuva nāni sa mrāḍ viśvet-tāni varu ṇasya vra tāni || 2 || The  Lord  of  all  wealth,  the  Sovereign  who  propped  up  the  heavens,  and  measured  out  the  broad  earth's  wide  expanses.  He,  King  Supreme,  governed    all  living  creatures.  All  these  are  Holy  Varuna's  operations.  (R.V.8;42;1.)   yat kiñce daṁ varuṇa daivye jane bhidro haṁ ma nu ṣyāṣcara m asi | acittī yat tava dharmā yuyopi mā mā na s tasmād ena so deva rīriṣaḥ || 3 || O  Lord  Varuna  as  undiscriminating  people  we  may  have  neglected   the   regular  daily  worship,   but  O  Varuna  such  deceit  might  have  been  done  unwittingly.  All  that  we  have  done,  all  the  Dharmas  that  we  have  transgressed;  O  Lord  Varuna  save  us    and  do  not  punish  us  for  them!   ki tāvāso yadri ’ri purṇa dīvi yad vāghā sa tyam u ta yanna vi dma | sarvā tā viṣya śithi reva de vāthā te syāma varuṇa pri yāsaḥ || 4 || The   blame   that   is   attributed   to   me   unjustly   or   the   errors     which   I   have   wittingly   and   unwittingly  committed;  may  all  these  be  effaced  by  you  O  Varuna  and  may  we  all  receive    your  grace.   ava te heḍo varuṇa amo bhi r ava ya jñobhi r īmahe ha virbhi ḥ | kṣaya nna a smabhya m asura praceto rāja n nenāgu ṁ si śiśrathaḥ kṛtāni || 5 || With  prostration,  oblations,  and  sacrifices  O  Varuna  we  mollify  your  anger.  Wise  Sovereign,      King  of  wide

! Take the pavitri from the praṇita water and sprinkle water on the head;

oṁ sumitriyān āpa oṣadhayassantu |

! Invert the pranita patra in the NE

oṁ durmitriyāstasmai santu yo 'smān dveṣṭi yañca vayam dviṣmaḥ || ! Perform purna huti

10. Dedication

! The yajaman then dedicates the kūpa for all beings —

saṅkalpaḥ ............... etat kūpa jalāśayaṁ varuṇa daivataṁ sarva bhūtopayogitvenā ahaṁ utsṛje ||

oṁ suprīyantāṁ sarva bhūtā namo bhūtoyavāsinaḥ | utsṛṣṭaṁ sarva bhūtebhyo mayaitajjalam utamam ||

I   salute   the  beings   that   reside   in  water,  may  all  beings  be  gratified  by   this  body  of  water  which   I  have  created  to  the  best  of  my  ability    for  all  beings.  

ramantāṁ sarvabhūtāni snāna pānāvagāhanaih | sāmānyaṁ sarva jīvebhyo mayā dattam idaṁ jalam ||

This  water   is   dedicated   to   the  use   of   all   beings,  may   they   enjoy,  may  all   beings  bathe,   drink  and  wash  freely  in  these  waters.  

ye ca kecid vipadyānte sva-sva-karma vipākataḥ | tat pāpanna pralipyehaṁ saphalāstu mama kriyāḥ ||

If  those  who  are  fatigued  from  the  performance  of  their  daily  labour  refresh  themselves  by  drinking  these  waters,  then  my  work  will  be  a  success.

Śālā Sūktam (A.V. 3:12)

i haiva dhru vāṁ ni mi nomi śālāṁ kṣeme tiṣṭhāti ghṛtaṁ u kṣamāṇā tāṁ tvā śāle sarva vīrās su vīrā ari ṣṭha vīrā upa saṁ ca rema || 1 || Here  I  fix  my  dwelling,  may  it  stand  in  safety,  radiant  with  light  (or  flowing  with  ghee),  may  we  approach  you  O  House  with  all  our  people  and  with  no  injury.  

i haiva dhru vā prati tiṣṭḥa śāle’śvāvatī goma tī sūnṛtāvatī | ūrja svatī ghṛtava tī paya sva ty ucchra yasva maha te saubha gāya || 2 || Stand  firm  on  this  spot  O  Hall,  possessed  of  life-­‐energy,  filled  with  knowledge  and  truthful  people,  rich  in  energy,  rich  in  milk  and  mental  clarity,  and  rise  up  for  the  enjoyment  of  good  fortune.  

dha ru ṇya’si śāle bṛhaccha ndāḥ pūti dhānyā | ā tvā va tso ga me dā ku māra ā dhe nava s sāyam āspanda mānāḥ || 3 || O  House,  you  are  a  sanctuary  for  everything.  With  your  lofty  roof  and  your  clean  corn,  May  there  come  to  you  the  calf  and  the  little  boy,  and  cattle  streaming  in  the  evening.  

i māṁ śālāṁ savi tā vāyur indro bṛha spati r ni mi notu prajānan | u kṣantūdnā ma ruto ghṛtena bhago no rājā ni kṛṣiṁ ta notu || 4 || May  Savitri,  Vayu,   Indra  and  Brihaspati  who  knows  all,  establish  this  house.  May  the  Maruts  sprinkle   it  with  water  and  light  (ghrta),  and  King  Bhaga  make  our  efforts  thrive.  

māna sya patni śara ṇā syo nā de vī de vebhi r nimi tāsy agre | tṛṇa m vasānā su manā asa stvam athāsmabhya ṁ sa ha-vīraṁ ra yiṁ dāḥ || 5 || Mistress  of  the  mansion,  our  shelter,  kind  goddess  you  were  first  created  by  the  devas.  May  you,  robed  in  thatch  be  gracious  to  us,  and  give  us  brave  sons,  happiness  and  wealth.  

ṛtena sthūṇām adhi roha vaṁśo gro vi rāja n apa vṛṅkṣva śatrūn | mā te riṣann upasa ttāro gṛhāṇāṁ śāle śa taṁ jīvema śa rada s sarva vīrāḥ || 6 || O  pillar  rise  up  with  the  Eternal  Law,  shine  brightly  and  scare  away  our  enemies.  Let  not  those  who  dwell  within  suffer.  May  we  live  for  an  hundred  autumns  with  our  heroic  people.  

emāṁ ku māras taru ṇa ā va tso jaga tā sa ha | emāṁ pari sruta ḥ ku mbha ā da dhnaḥ ka laśai r aguḥ || 7 || To   this   house  may   the   little   child   come,   the   calf   and   the   cattle   too.   To   this   house  may   the   overflowing  pitcher  come  and  jars  of  curd  as  well.  

pūrṇaṁ nāri pra bha ra ku mbham e taṁ ghṛtasya dhārām a mṛte na saṁbhṛtāṁ | i māṁ pātṛn a mṛte nā sama ṅgdhi iṣṭhā pūrtam a bhi ra kṣāty enām || 8 || O   lady,   bring   this   full   pitcher   and   the   streams   of   ghee   mixed   with   ambrosia   (amrita),   and   with   the  ambrosia  anoint  the  gods  well,  may  our  hopes  be  fulfilled,  preserve  this  dwelling.  

i mā āpa ḥ pra bha rāmy aya kṣmā ya kṣma nāśa nīḥ | gṛhān upa pra sīdāmy a mṛte na sa hāgninā || 9 ||

a gnir bhūtānām adhi pati s-sa māvatva smin brahma nn-asmin kṣatre ’syām-āśiṣya syām pu ro dhāyām a smin ka rmann-a syām de va -hūtyāguṁ svāhā | agnaya idam || 14 || 14  O  Agni  is  the  lord  of  beings,  may  He  help  me;    to  attain  Spiritual  Dominion,  to  obtain  dominion  over  the  material,  in  this  prayer,  in    this  sacerdotal  rite,  in  this  ritual  act,  this  invocation  of  the  gods.  Hail!

(apa upaspruṣya) 3. Rāṣṭrabhrt homaḥ.

ru tāṣāḍ ru ta dhāmāgni gandha rvas tasya oṣa dhayo’psa rasa ūrjo nāma sa i dam brahma kṣa tram pātu tā i dam brahma kṣa tram pāntu ta smai svāhā | agnaye gandharvāyedam || 32 || 32.  O  Maintainer  of  the  Holy  Cosmic  Order,  abounding  in  truth,  the  Mystic  Fire  is  the  Celestial  Harmony,  his  manifest  potential  are  the  herbs,    called  Nourishing.    May  he  protect  this    our    Spiritual  Dominion  ,  and      Temporal  Dominion;    to  him    all  hail!  

tābhya s svāhā | oṣadhībhyo’psarobhya idam || 33 || 33.  To  them    all  hail!  sa guṁ hi to vi śva-sāmā sūryo gandha rvas tasya marīcayo’psa rasa āyuvo nāma ..... svāhā | sūryāya gandharvāya idam || 34 || 34.   The   Conjoined,   [of   day   and   night]   lauded   by   the   Universe,   the   Sun   is   the   Celestial   Harmony,   His  manifest  potential  are    His  rays  called  the  Vital  Forces.    May  he  protect  ...................  

tābhya s svāhā | marīchibhyo’psarobhya idam || 35 || 35.  To  them    all  hail!  

su ṣu mnas sūrya raśmiś ca ndramā gandha rvas tasya nakṣa trāṇy-apsa rasa be ku rayo nāma .... svāhā | candramase gandharvāyedam || 36 || 36.   The   Highly-­‐Blessed,   radiant-­‐rayed   Moon     is   the   Celestial   Harmony,   his   manifest   potential   are   the    Asterisms  called    Luminous.    May  he  .................  

tābhya s svāhā | nakṣatrebhyo’psarobhya idam || 37 || 37.  To  them    all  hail!  

bhu jyus su pa rṇo ya jño ga ndha rvas tasya dakṣi ṇā apsa rasa s tavā nāma .... svāhā || yajñāya gandharvāyedam || 38 || 38.  The  protecting,  the    Strong-­‐winged  Sacrifice  is  the  Celestial  Harmony,  his  manifest  Potential  are  the  sacrificial  fees,  (called)    praises  .    May  he  protect  ....................  

tābhya s svāhā | dakṣiṇābhyo’psarobhya idam || 39 || 39.  To  them    all  hail!  

pra jāpa tir vi śvaka rmā mano gandha rvas tasya rk-sāmānya psa raso vahna yo nāma .... svāhā | manase gandharvāyedam || 40 || 40.   Prajapati     the   Creator   of   the   Universe,     the     Cosmic   Mind   is   the   Celestial   Harmony   ;   his   manifest  potential  are  the  Rc  and  the  Sama  verses,  called  hymns.    May  he  protect  ....................

tābhya s svāhā | adbhyo’psarobhya idam || 43 || 43.  To  them    all  hail!  

bhuva nasya pate yasya ta u pari gru hā i ha ca | sa no rāśvā-jyāniguṁ rāyas poṣaguṁ su vīryaguṁ samvatsa rīṇāguṁ sva stiguṁ svāhā | bhuvanasya pataya idam || 44 || 44.  O  Lord  of  the  world,  thou  who  dwells  above  and  below,  do  thou  give  us  increase  of  wealth,  unfailing,  rich  in  heroes,  prosperity  abiding  throughout  the  year.  All  hail.  

pa ra me ṣṭhy-adhi patir mru tyu gandha rvas tasya viśva m apsa raso bhuvo nāma .... svāhā | mrutyave gandharvāyedam || 45 || 45.  The  Supreme  Ruler   ,   the  Overlord,   the  Controller     is   the  Celestial  Harmony;  his  manifest  potential   is  the  whole    universe  called  the  worlds.    May  he  protect  .................  

tābhya s svāhā | viśvasmā apsarobhya idam || 46 || 46.  To  them    all  hail!  

su kṣitis subhūtir bhadra krt suva rvān pa rjanyo gandha rvas tasya vi dyuto -’psa raso ruco nāma .... svāhā | parjanyāya gandharvāyedam || 47 || 47.  With  fair  abode,  fair  wealth,  doer  of  good  deeds,  holding  the  light,  Parjanya  is  the  Celestial  Harmony,  his  manifest  potential  is  the  lightening  (called)  the  radiant.      

tābhya s svāhā | vidyudbhyo’psarobhya idam || 48 || 48.  To  them    all  hail!  

dūrehe tir amruḍa yo mrtyur gandha rvas tasya pra jā a psa raso bhīruvo nāma .... svāhā | mrutyuve gandharvāyedam || 49 || 49.  He  Whose  dart  speeds  afar,  the  Pitiless,    Death  is  the  Celestial  Harmony;    his  manifest  potential    are  the    creatures,  (called)  the    Fearfull.    May  he  protect  this  .........................  

tābhya s svāhā | prajābhyo’psarobhya idam || 50 || 50.  To  them    all  hail!  

cāru h krpaṇakāśī kāmo gandha rva tasyādhayo ’psa rasa ś śocaya ntīr-nāma sa i dam brahma kṣa tram pātu tā i dam brahma kṣa tram pāntu ta smai svāhā | kāmāya gandharvāyedam || 51 || 51.  The  dear  one,  looking  with  desire,    Love  is  the  Celestial  Harmony;  his  manifest  potential  are  thoughts  (called)  burning;    May  he  protect  this    ..................  

tābhya s svāhā | ādhibhyo’psarobhya idam || 52 || 52.  To  them    all  hail!

sa no bhuvanasya pate yasya ta u pari gru hā i ha ca | ūru brahma ṇe’smai kṣa trāya mahi śarma yaccha svāhā | bhuvanasya patye brahmaṇa idam || 53 || O  lord  of  the  world,  who  dwells  above  and  below,  please  grant    extensive,  great  protection  to  this  Spiritual  Dominion    and  to  this  Temporal  Dominion  and  grant  us  peace  for  ever.  

UUUttttttaaarrrāāāṅṅṅgggaaammm Conclusion

prajāpate na tvad e tānyanyo viśvā jātāni pari tā ba bhūva | yat kāmas te juhu mas tanno astu va yaguṁ syāma pata yo rayīṇāguṁ svāhā || prajāpataya idam na mama | O  Lord  of  Beings,  you  alone  can  comprehend  all  these  created  forms,  and  none  beside  you.  Grant  us  our  heart's  desire  when  we  invoke  you,  may  we  become  the  lords  of  rich  possessions.  (VS.  10;20)  

om bhūssvāhā | agnaye idam na mama | oṃ bhuvassvāhā | vāyave ida na mama om suvassvāhā | sūryāya idam na mama

yad a sya karma ṇo ’tyarīrica ṃ yad vā nyūnam i hāka ram | agniṣṭa t sviṣṭa -kṛd vidvān sarvaguṁ svi ṣṭa guṁ suhu tam karotu svāhā | agnaye sviṣṭakṛtedam na mama | Whatever   there  has  been  done   that   is     superfluous     or  deficient   in   this   sacrifice,   you  know   it  all,   please  accept  it  as  complete  O  Agni  Svistakrta.    Paridhi pariharaṇam; ! Offer the paridhis into the fire after having dipped them in ghee; the middle one first followed

by the three others.

Samsrāva Homaḥ ! Fill the sruva with ghee then cover with the sruk then offer a continuous stream of ghee;

svāhā | vasubhyo rudrebhya āditebhyaḥ saṃsrāva bhāgebhyaḥ idam na mama | All  Hail!  To  the  Vaus,  the  Rudras  and  the  Adityas  I  offer  this  oblation.    

om bhūr-bhuvas-suvas-svāhā | prajāpataye idam na mama | To  The  Physical,  Mental  and  Spiritual  realms  All  Hail,  to  the  Lord  of  Creation  I  make  this  offering.

On  this  auspicious  day  characterized  by  the  afore  mentioned  Astrological  parameters,  with  the  sanction  of   the   Supreme   Person   and   as   service   to   Him   alone   ,   in   this   rite   of     .................     I   shall   now   make   the  atonement  offerings.  

anājñātaṃ yad ajñātaṃ yājñasya kri yate mithu | agne tada sya ka lpa ya tvaguṁ hi vettha ya thā tathagass svāhā || agnayedam na mama | Whatever    error  I  may  have  committed  in  this  sacrifice,  knowingly  or  unknowingly,  O  Agni  you  know  full  well,  please  amend  it  and  make  it  perfect.  (TB.3.7.11.5.)  

puru ṣa sammito ya jño ya jñaḥ puru ṣa sammitaḥ | agne tada sya ka lpa ya tvaguṁ hi vettha yathā tathagass svāhā || agnayedam na mama | The  Supreme  Lord  is  coequal  with  Sacrifice,  the  Sacrifice  is  coequal  with  the  Lord.  O  Agni  you  know  full  well,  please  amend  it  and  make  it  perfect.  (TB.3.7.11.5)  

yat pāka tra manasā dīna da kṣā na | ya jñasya ma nvate martāsaḥ | agni ṣṭad hotā kra tu -vid vijānan yaji ṣṭho de vāguṁ kra tu śo ya jāti svāhā || agnayedam na mama || Since  we  humans    of  feeble  energies,  with  immature  minds,  are  unacquainted  with  the  correct  procedure  of   sacrifice,  may  the  Mystic  Fire  who   is   skilled   in   the  rites,  well  knowing  all   that   is   to  be  done,   the  best  offerer,  offer  worship  (on  our  behalf)  according  to  fit  season.    (RV.10.2.5a)  

om bhūssvāhā | agnaye idam na mama | Om  to  the  material  plane  All  Hail!  oṃ bhuvassvāhā | vāyave ida na mama Om  to  the  Astral  realm  All  Hail!  om suvassvāhā | sūryāya idam na mama Om  to  the  transcendental  realm  All  Hail!  

Saṅkalpaḥ — asmin homa karmaṇi madhye saṃbhāvita samasta doṣa prāyaścittārthaṃ sarva prāyaścittam hoṣyāmi For  all   shortcomings   that  occurred  during   the   course  of   this   sacrifice   I  now  offer     final  atonement  and  expiation.  

om bhūr-bhuvas-suvas-svāhā | prajāpataye idam na mama | Om  To  the  physical,  mental  and  transcendental  realms  All  Hail!  

om śrīviṣṇave-svāhā | viṣṇave paramātmane idam na mama | Om,  To  the  Omnipresent  Lord  All  Hail!      

oṃ rudrāya paśupataye svāhā | rudrāya paśupataye idaṃ na mama Om,  To  the  Destroyer,  the  Lord  of  all  beings,  All  Hail!          

Pūrṇahuti Final Offering

Saṅkalpaḥ — oṃ pūrvokta guṇa viśeṣeṇa visiṣṭhāyāṃ asyāṃ śubha tithau bhagavad ājñayā bhagavad kaiṅkarya rūpeṇa asmin .................... homa karmaṇaḥ saṃpūrṇa phala prāptyārthaṃ ............. nāmāgnau pūrṇāhutiṃ hoṣyāmi | tadanantaraṃ sāṅgata siddhyarthaṃ vāsordhārāṃ hoṣyāmi ||

oṃ sapta te agne sa midha s sa pta ji hvās sapta ṛṣayaḥ sapta dhāma pri yāṇi | sa pta hotrā sapta -dhā tvā ya ja nti sa pta yoni r āpṛṇasva ghṛte na svāhā || agnaye saptavatedaṃ na mama || Seven  are  your  faggots  O  Agni,  seven  your  tongues,  seven  the  seers  and  seven  the  beloved  locations.  Seven  are  the  priests   that  oblate  to  you,  seven  are  the  sources,  with  this  oblation  of  ghee  grant  us  protection.    (KYV.  1.5.3.2)

prācyāṁ di śī de vā ṟtvijo mārjayantām In  the  eastern  quarter    may  the  gods,  the  priests  make  me  bright.  

dakṣiṇa sya di śī māsāḥ pi taro mārjayantām In  the  southern  quarter  may  the  months,  the  manes  make  me  illustrious.  

prtīcyāṁ di śī gṟhāḥ paśavo mārjayantām In  the  western  quarter  may  the  houses,  the  cattle  make  me  illustrious.  

udīcyāṁ di śyāpa oṣa dhayo mārjayantām In  the  northern  quarter  may  the  waters,  the  plants,  the  trees  make  me  illustrious.  

ūrdhvāyāṁ di śī ya jña sa ṁva tsaro ya jña-patir mārjayantām In  the  zenith  may  the  sacrifice,  the  year,  the  Lord  of  Sacrifice  make  me  illustrious.  

oṁ va iśvāna rāya vi dmahe | lālīlāya dhīmahi | tanno agniḥ praco dayāt We  cognize  the  Mystic  Fire  within  the  soul  of  all  beings,  may  that  Illuminator  enlighten  us.

Homage to Agni

agne naya su pathā rāye a smān viśvāni deva va yunāni vi dvan | yu yo dhya smaj-ju hurāṇam eno bhūyi ṣṭhānte nama uktim vidhema || oṁ agnaye namaḥ agniṁ ātmanyudvāsayāmi || O  Refulgent  Agni   you  possess   all   kinds   of   knowledge  and  are   therefore  wise.   Lead  us   in  a  goodly  path  to  the    wealth  of  Beatitude.    Keep  away  from  us  corrupting  sin  which  stands  in  the  way  of  our  attainment.  We  offer  you  many  salutations.  Om  Obeisance  to  Agni  -­‐  I  return  you  to  your  place  within  my  heart  

Prārthana

namaste gārhapatyāya namaste dakṣiṇāgnaye | nama āhavanīyāya mahā vedyāi namo namaḥ ||

Reverence  to  the  Garhapatya  fire  ,  reverence  to  the  dakshina  fire.  Reverence  to  the  Ahavaniya  fire  and  to  the  Main  Altar  I  pay  repeated  reverence.  

kāṇḍa dvaya upapādhyāya karma brahma svarūpiṇam | svarga apavarga rūpāya yajñeśāya namo namaḥ ||

I  pay  my  obeisances  to  the  Lord  of  Sacrifices  who  is  manifest  in  the  form  of  the  twin  divisions  of  the  Vedas  relating   to  Action   (karma-­‐kanda)   and   to  Knowledge   (Brahma-­‐kanda)    which   are   the   causes   of   heaven  and  liberation    respectively.  

yajñeśācyuta govinda mādhava anata keśava | kṛṣṇa viṣṇo hṛṣīkeśa vāsudeva namo'stu te ||

Salutations   to   you   O   Krishna,   the   Lord   of   Sacrifice,   The   All-­‐pervading   One,   the   Lord-­‐of-­‐the-­‐senses,   the  Eternal  One,  the  Consort  of  Lakshmi,    the  Indweller,  and  Lord  of  the  Universe.  

mantra hīnaṃ kriya hīnaṃ bhakti hīnaṃ hutāśana | yad hutaṃ tu mayā deva paripūrṇaṃ tad astu te ||

Deficient  as  this  sacrifice  is    in  formulae,    methodology  and  devotion  O  Agni!  Whatever  I  have  offered  my  Lord,    let  it  be  acceptable  to  you.  

prāyaścitta anya śeṣāṇi tapaḥ karmātma kāni vai | yāni teṣām aśeṣāṇāṃ kṛṣṇa anusmaraṇaṃ param ||

There  is  no  other  expiation  in  austerities    and  other  actions  whereby  everything  that  is    deficient  becomes  whole  other  than  by  the  remembrance    of    the  name  of  Krishna.  

yasya smṛtya cā nāmokta tapaḥ yajña kriyādiṣu | nyūnam sampūrṇatām yāti sadyo vande tam acyutam ||

oṃ śrī kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa
