LED technology has evolved to last longer, offer better quality luminescence and mostimportantly, to save up to 60% energy as compared to traditional lighting solutions.Awhile back, applications for LED lighting were nothing more than Christmas lights andlaser beams. However, the LED lighting technology has swiftly developed to be one ofthe leading and prominent lighting solutions in today’s market. From hand held itemssuch as flashlights to vehicles and commercial buildings, a vast range of products areimplementing LED technology. Due to their versatility, light emitting diodes have alsodiscovered some innovative and interesting applications, made possible by the latest intechnology. Everyday more and more people are realizing the energy­efficiency benefitsof LED lighting.

Designs in apparel cannot be discussed without some cutting edge designers. Californiabased, Janet Cooke Hansen is the ‘Chief Fashion Engineer’ of Enlightened Designs Inc.She has designed custom LED pieces for Cirque du Soleil, “Dancing With The Stars,“Kanye West, as well as many others. Ready­to­wear pieces are available to the publicfor under $100. The creativity does not stop there. Designed at Soomi Park in Korea,LED eyelashes are switched on and off when the wearer tilts her head forwards andbackwards.   Costume   make   up   is   revolutionized   by  LED   lighting   technology.Cosmetically, they are bewildering and awe inspiring, and essentially like having a setof tiny torches beaming out from your eyes. Ph.D. student Leah Buechley developed amagnificent and actually pretty useful LED cyclist’s jacket. Comic book enthusiasts willidentify the central Iron Man Arc Reactor in her design, and for cyclists the arrows serveas indicators. Innovation, technology and safety make this jacket a hit among cyclist andmotorbike enthusiasts.

The bionic contact lens is probably one of the most cutting edge creations.  You mayhave near perfect vision with your current contact lenses, but do they allow you to readyour   emails   right   on   your   retinas?   Developed   by   Aalto   University   in   Finland,   theamazing “bionic” contact lens is a prototype that, in the future, could allow mankindinto a virtual reality with endless possibilities. Those using a Bionic contact lens wouldpotentially be able to “see” what they might on their computer screen without the needfor anything but   their  eyes and these contacts.  The  lens  transmits  information to atransparent sapphire chip that contains a single micro­LED.

It is apparent that everything from headlights to TVs, clothing and wallpaper are nowbeing lit up by the versatile LED lighting technology. LEDs are super­compact, don’temit heat and use just a fraction of the energy, unlike incandescents. In addition theirflexible, plastic design allows them to be used in a wonderful variety of innovative andtruly creative ways that other types of lighting just can’t fathom.
