Judging from the informat ion we received85 weassume that all members of the falconidae and accipitridae families dothis. It is difficult to choose fro m among them. Egypti an materia lgives us no definite answer. In the reliefs the sacred bird of the Egyptianshas a stereotyped shape which, particularly in the drawing of the eye,mos t resembles the peregrine. 8~ But in the texts at least seven terms areused fo r this one figure, 37 while an examination of the mummies of ab outthree hundred and fifty birds of prey showed all the falconidae and allthe accipitridae to be represented. ~8 So the Egyp tians were not veryselective; this was even remarked on in ancient times, a9 Wit h the Greeksand particularly with the Romans the symbolism of the Egyptian bird33 Aelian.,D e N a t .
