    spent her junior year at the

    Intercollegiate Center for

    Classical Studies in Rome.

    Since the Centers program

    is one semester whichrepeats in the spring, the

    fortunate few who stayed for

    a full year did most of their

    spring studies independently,

    exploring Rome and environs

    on a daily basis. After

    completing her classics

    major at Brown University,she switched fields, earning

    a Ph.D. in Italian from the

    University of California at

    Berkeley, with a concentra-

    tion in the Middle Ages. She

    taught Italian language,

    literature, and civilization at

    Vanderbilt from 1984 to 2012,when she resigned to allow

    herself more time for

    writing. She has traveled

    extensively in Italy, has twice

    taken Vanderbilt students on

    study tours of Rome, and has

    been the faculty representa-tive on two previous

    Vanderbilt alumni tours.
