In January, mail your transcripts to institutions that require your first term marks. This applies mainly to universities in Eastern Canada e.g. University of Toronto, McGill etc.

For other courses taken outside of school (online, VLN, correspondence), obtain marks and transcripts for these courses. 50% of the course must be completed for an interim report card.

Distributed Learning courses must be completed by February 1, 2014 if you wish for the course(s) to be used in the calculation of your average for UBC.

Check your email and your student account to get updates of your application(s) and to identify whether you have any missing documents.

If you wish for the Ministry of Education to forward your preliminary transcript file (this will only include course completion from previous years (mainly Grade 10 and 11 courses), you must complete the Post-Secondary Institutions Selections Form (PSI) online @ www.bced.gov.bc.ca/exams/tsw/tsw/student/ by March 1, 2014. For details, check out pages 15-18.

Application deadline for UBC for Fall 2014 is February 3, 2014.

Deadline for SFU Major Entrance Scholarship: February 28, 2014.

Most institutions will send you an email or a letter to remind you to do this. Upon submitting your term two grades, you should receive information on the status of your application(s) including conditional offers of admission. For SFU, if you have not received an admission offer, self-report your term two marks to improve your chances of getting in.

Ensure you meet the deadlines for accepting offers of admission and paying acceptance deposits.

Follow-up with the institution if you have any outstanding questions (e.g. marks, course planning, fees, etc.). If required, make arrangements to write the Language Proficiency Index Test (LPI) or the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

UBC

The following information can be viewed in its entirety at the UBC Admissions Blog: http://blog.students.ubc.ca/counsellors/2013/05/24/using-bc-secondary-school-grades-in-the-2014-ubc-undergraduate-admission-decision/) “Key information for students considering applying to UBC for the September 2014 academic year Because of the high demand for places in UBC’s undergraduate programs and the need to avoid unduly long (and stressful) decision wait times, some changes are being made in how UBC requires information about BC secondary school courses. The purpose of these changes is to ensure that UBC renders timely offers of admission based upon either official or verifiable course information. The following presents an overview of how UBC will use BC secondary school courses information (including courses taken via Distributed Learning) for students applying to start at UBC in 2014.

WHAT’S NEW?

When must a course be completed in order to be used as a pre-requisite for admission to UBC? In order to be used as pre-requisites for admission to UBC, all courses (including Distributing Learning courses) must be completed by the end of June. For example, if Pre-Calculus 12 is required for admission, the course must be completed (either in-person or online) by June 30.

When must a course be completed in order to be used in the calculation of the admission average for admission to UBC? UBC determines admissibility under a holistic process, which may consider both academic performance (i.e. grades) and applicant-submitted personal profiles. In order to ensure offers of admission can be given as soon as possible, UBC requires course information early in the year. The following outlines how UBC selects course grades to be used in the calculation of the admission average:

Semestered, quartered, or self-paced courses: For the grade to be used in the calculation of the UBC admission average, all Grade 12 courses must be completed by February 1. If the course is in progress after February 1, the final grade from an equivalent Grade 11 course may be used as a substitute. This includes courses offered via Distributed Learning.

Linear courses: All in-progress Grade 12 courses following a structured linear timetable (i.e. courses start in September and end in June) can be used in the calculation of the admission average on the basis of Term 2 grades (usually available in March). This includes linear-calendar courses offered via Distributed Learning.

All other in-progress course grades available in the spring will be considered on a case-by-case basis only. Because 2014 will be a transition year in this new process, there may be some flexibility (on a case-by-case basis) for students who wish to use grades from courses they were unable to complete by February 1.

How do students send their grades to UBC? Between the first week of March and the first week of April, all BC secondary school applicants

excluding those completing the IB Diploma) must self-report the following information to UBC: Final grades (including Distributed Learning grades) that appear on their Ministry of Education portal https://www.bced.gov.bc.ca/exams/)

In-progress grades for linear courses that appear on their Term 2 report card (issued during the self-reporting period) from their home school.

How does UBC verify the grades students self-report for admission? UBC verifies courses and grades self-reported by students with information sent directly to UBC by the Ministry of Education in May. All offers of admission made on self-reported course data are conditional, subject to verification on official data from the Ministry of Education.

Page 12: VANCOUVER TECHNICAL SECONDARY P - WordPress.com · 2013-10-08 · Deadline for SFU Major Entrance Scholarship: February 28, 2014. MARCH AND APRIL Submit your term two grades by self-reporting

12 | Post-Secondary Information Booklet, Vancouver Technical Secondary School, 2013-2014

WHAT’S NEW?

How will UBC receive grades from Distributed Learning courses? Students enrolled in Distributed Learning Grade 12 courses that are either self-paced or semestered must ensure that the course is completed by February 1 in order to be used in the calculation of the admission average; or June 30 in order to meet a pre-requisite for admission. Students should ensure that final grades are submitted by the Distributed Learning provider to the Ministry of Education (either directly or via the student’s home school) so that they appear on the student’s Ministry of Education portal during the self-reporting period. Students enrolled in Distributed Learning Grade 12 courses that follow a fixed linear calendar should request their Distributed Learning provider to contact the UBC Undergraduate Admissions office in order to make arrangements to submit in-progress Term 2 grades directly to UBC.

Do final grades matter in the UBC admission decision? Yes. All offers of admission made on in-progress grades in the spring are conditional upon final Grade 12 grades. Admitted students are expected to more or less maintain their level of academic performance at point of admission through to graduation.

What does “more or less” mean? UBC understands that grades can fluctuate between February and June of the Grade 12 year. It is not our intention to take away offers of admission in the summer simply because an admitted student’s grades have gone down. Students who continue to work hard in their senior year should not worry that their offer of admission to UBC is in jeopardy, even if their final grades are lower than at point of admission.

However, in cases where the change in grades is significant, the student’s admission status will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. In some cases, students with significantly lower final grades may be asked to take a reduced course load in their first term at UBC. In more extreme cases, students may have their offer of admission revoked.” Quoted from the UBC Admission blog: http://blog.students.ubc.ca/counsellors/2013/05/24/using-bc-secondary-school-grades-in-the-2014-ubc-undergraduate-admission-decision/.

CAPILANO U Effective September 2013, Capilano U will not be offering the first year Commerce transfer program. The LPI is a requirement in order to enroll in first year English at UBC and for other institutions, the LPI is used for placement into first year English courses. Exemptions also vary from institution. Check the institution(s) of choice to determine what English marks are required to be exempted. Van Tech will possibly host an LPI sitting in April. This test is also offered for a fee at other locations several times a year. For specific test dates and to register online, check out: http://www.lpitest.ca. Registration usually opens approximately one month prior to the test date. EXEMPTIONS FROM LPI FOR UBC:

SCHOLARSHIP AND BURSARY PROGRAM (S&B Program) The S&B Program is designed to help you discover a range of financial options for your post-secondary education. Whether you’re heading to a major university (UBC or SFU), a college (Langara), a polytechnical institution (BCIT), an art school (Emily Carr), or anything else, you’ll need money to get there. Many students don’t know that there are a range of opportunities to get money for their education and even when students find scholarships that they qualify for, they don’t know how to write effective applications to get noticed among the thousand others. That’s where the S&B Program comes in. Myths about Scholarships and Bursaries Most scholarships are only for ‘A’ students False - Many athletic, skills/talents, and trades scholarships and bursaries don’t focus on grades. There may be a minimum GPA, but it’s generally low (~65%); e.g. BC Arts Council has a $4000 scholarship and applicants are judged on their portfolio and post-secondary goals. Most scholarships are for students who are involved in tons of clubs and organizations False – Sometimes it’s quality over quantity; volunteering in one or two ‘related’ organizations is better than volunteering for a variety of different random organizations not related to your career goals. There are thousands to tens of thousands of people applying so my chances are poor True for major national scholarships; False for smaller, more specialized and local scholarships and bursaries (e.g. There was a Mt. Pleasant PAC Scholarship only for Grade 12 Mt Pleasant Elementary graduates so the pool of candidates is only around 60). When applying to scholarships, I should list every single extra-curricular activity I’ve been involved in False – Remember, its quality over quantity so highlight a few really good volunteer opportunities that match what the scholarship/bursary is looking for. I haven’t done many extra-curricular activities, but it’s not too late True – Some scholarships and bursaries are academic-based and don’t place an emphasis on extra-curricular activities; some bursaries look at what you have done, but place an emphasis on what you want to do in the future with your education and need. Scholarships and bursaries are the only options I have to get money for post-secondary False – Besides scholarships and bursaries, there are government loans, bank loans, and work-study programs. And once you’re in post-secondary, there are co-op programs and in-house scholarships, bursaries, and grants. What’s the difference between a scholarship, bursary, and a loan? Scholarships: largely based on grades and extra- curricular activities/ community involvement Bursaries: mainly based on financial need, but may look at other aspects too (e.g. Grades, community involvement, career goals, etc.) Government loan: need to pay it back, but there’s no interest while you’re in school; you start paying back the loan once you graduate and the monthly minimal payment tends to be low.
