Malissa Spacek of BA Med Spa& Weight Loss Center hasstrong concerns over the grimoutlook concerning Oklahoma’sobesity percentage, which was atan alarming rate of 31.4 percentin 2012, up from 30.4 percentjust one year prior. The nationalobesity rate is 35.7 percent.“This is a crucial and dangerousissue, but the great thing is thatthis is something we can dosomething about.”

To show faith in this laststatement, BA Med Spa &Weight Loss Center is initiatingits 2013 90-Day Weight LossChallenge. Clients who beginthe medically supervised program in January, whichincludes an initial visit and evaluation with lab tests, will beweighed at the beginning andend of 90 days. Weight loss often increasesone’s confidence and selfesteem, but combating obesity isimportant for far more than cosmetic reasons. According tothe Centers for Disease Control, obesity is related to a whole hostof health problems and diseases, including coronary heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, somecancers (including endometrial, breast and colon), high cholesterol, sleep apnea and other respiratory problems, osteoarthritis, reproductivehealth complications, and somemental health conditions likedepression. Therefore it is nosurprise that the costs of obesityreported by the CDC are stag-gering. For example, in 2008, it

Belinda Stewart, R.N. andmedical manager at EmergeMedical Day Spa, expands onthis thought by encouragingclients to focus on treating aproblem that is of top priority tothem and then, after visiting thespa, decide if they want to pursue other personal skin goals.“A person might come in for amassage and after touring thefacility, she finds out we dolasers and peels,” Belinda says.“Her positive experience heremight make her feel ready todeal with other problems, likebrown spots on her nose or

Kathy Trevino had been overweight her entire life, fromchildhood throughout herteenage and adult years. Whenshe had children in her late twenties, the pounds really beganto pack on and her weight problem got worse and worse. Bythe time she was in her early forties, she weighed 262 poundsat 5’ 4”. “I had severe chronicpain in my lower back, and myphysician told me that if I didn’tdo something about my weight, Iwould be in a wheelchair by theage of 50,” says Kathy.

One of Kathy’s coworkerssuggested she look into weightloss surgery, and that her insur-ance might pay for it because itwas causing her back pain. Kathychecked with her insurance com-pany and was referred to Dr.Luis Gorospe at OklahomaPremier Bariatrics. “I had heardabout Lap-Band surgery withcelebrities like Al Roker, andfound out that it is less invasiveand has a quicker recovery timethan other weight loss surgeries.I went to Dr. Gorospe’s seminarand decided I had to nothing tolose,” says Kathy.

In December of 2007, Dr.Gorospe performed Lap-Band

even for my children. I’m nolonger the obese mom; I’m anormal mom.”

Kathy recommends Dr.Gorospe to anyone consideringweight loss surgery. “Dr.Gorospe has an excellent bedsidemanner, and he will actuallyspend time with you to go overyour questions and concerns. Ibelieve he’s not only a good doctor, but a good person.”

If you are morbidly obese

surgery on Kathy, and her lifehasn’t been the same since.Kathy has lost around 110pounds and kept the weight off.“The changes in my life havebeen dramatic. I no longer havepain in my lower back, I canmove around much better, I haveso much more energy, and I’mable to see my kneecaps! There’salso the physical part – at 47, I’venever looked better. It haschanged every aspect of my life,

and suffering from medical complications stemming frombeing overweight, surgery may bethe right answer for you. Withso many options available, it canbe stressful and confusing choosing where to go, who tosee, and what surgery is right foryou. To help answer these questions, Dr. Gorospe offersfree weekly seminars.

During the seminars, Dr.Gorospe explains the entireprocess from beginning to endand assists the small group ofattendees in determining if theyare qualified for surgery. Heoffers roux-en-y gastric bypass, adjustable banding (i.e. the Lap-Band surgery that Kathyreceived), and gastric sleeve surgeries.

Gastric bypass and gastricsleeve surgeries are generally preferred for patients who needto lose a very large amount ofweight (between 80 and 100pounds, with a body mass indexor 40 of higher) and suffer fromco-morbid conditions such asdiabetes and high blood pressure. “These surgerieschange the person’s hormonalcomponents immediately, andthere is almost 100 percent

improvement of their diabetes ifthey are on one oral medicationonly. Approximately 80 percentof patients who were on highblood pressure medications nolonger need their meds afterthese surgeries,” explains Dr.Gorospe. “Lap-Band surgery istypically for those who need tolose a smaller amount of weight, who are approximately 50pounds overweight with a BMIof 30 to 34.”

Dr. Gorospe says the bestpart of his job is seeing theincredible changes that takeplace in his patients’ lives.“Before the surgery, many of mypatients are depressed, hate theirrelationship with food, and aretired all time. When they losethe weight, their lives are prolonged and their quality oflife is greatly improved. Theirrelationships with loved ones arebetter, and they’re able to dothings they’ve never been able tobefore. It’s very gratifying tohelp people live longer, healthier, happier lives.”

Weight Loss Can Change Your Life

You turn it on and it flowsfrom your tap, easy, convenient, potable water, technologically advanced purified water wholly fit forhuman consumption – but isit? Despite clean water laws, our tap water continues to becontaminated with a host ofpollutants – pollutants knownto increase the risk of serioushealth conditions. Conditionsamplified by the addition ofchloramines -a combination ofchlorine and ammonia, to ourdrinking water. Sounds morelike something you wouldclean with than drink.

Worldwide chlorine hasbeen used to disinfect drinkingwater. Although it is far saferthan the bacteria it destroys, when combined with chloramines and chlorine dioxide a powerful carcino-genic Trihalomethane (THMs)is formed. Linked to liver, kidney and nervous systemdisorders, THMs are formedwhen chlorine reacts with naturally occurring materialsfound in water. If you thinkdrinking bottled water protects you from these harmful contaminants, I amthe bearer of bad news. 40%of bottled water is bottled tapwater.

Yes, you read correctly. Notonly is 40% of bottled watertap water, bottled water mayor may not have received additional filtration. An inde-pendent study done by theEnvironmental Working Groupfound arsenic, THMs and 36other harmful pollutants hidden in bottled water. Inaddition, drinking from a plastic bottle is a bad idea.Plastic bottles containBisphenol- A or BPA, a synthetic hormone disruptorlinked to learning and behavioral problems, alteredimmune system function, prostate and breast cancers, early puberty in both genders, and a contributor to the healthrisks surrounding obesity. There is, however, a way to protect yourself, your family, and loved ones.

The most economical andenvironmentally sound choiceyou and your family can makeis to purchase and install awater filter in your home.Granular Carbon and CarbonBlock Filters are the most common types of counter topand under counter water filters. Granular activated carbon is recognized by theEPA as the best available technology for the removal oforganic chemicals such aschloramines, herbicides, pesticides and industrialchemicals.

For 26 years EnvironmentalResources has provided waterand air filtration services toTulsa businesses and resi-dences. Sold, installed andmaintained, our filters removea host of contaminants foundin drinking water. From thetap over the kitchen and bathroom sinks to shower-heads, ice machines, watercoolers, refrigerators, wholehouse systems, whole businesses and more, our timetested water filters deliverpure, great tasting water.Today drinking filtered water is simply a health consciousthing to do. Why not let our filters make a positive changein your life?

Do you have an elderly loved one– perhaps your mother, father ora grandparent – whose currenthome is no longer the best placeto live? The reasons for needingto transition into an independ-ent living community, residentialcare home, assisted living facilityor nursing home are vast andmay include declining physical ormental health, lack of a supportsystem available in case of emergency, or inability to takecare of home maintenanceneeds. “Many people realize,‘This is what we need to do,’ butthey’re unsure exactly how to goabout it,” says Michelle Brown,co-owner of Assisted Transitionwith Mark Smith. “Our servicesare geared toward families thathave planned ahead and are pre-pared for the change, but needhelp in finding the right homefor their loved one.”

Assisted Transition offersfree senior living placement andreferral services for the greaterTulsa area. “We are able to assistfamilies in finding the rightassisted living community, independent living community, residential care home, nursinghome, home care provider, ormemory support/Alzheimer’s

the best matched locations for aguided tour. Once a selection hasbeen made and the personmoved to the right facility, theyfollow up to ensure that allexpectations have been met.

Co-owner Mark Smith wish-es he’d had access to this servicewhen it was time for his father, who had Alzheimer’s disease, tomove out of his home. “He wasa wanderer, and we unknowinglyplaced him in a home that wasnot able to care for his needs. Hewas only there for a very shorttime before we had to move himagain. In addition to the distress,we were out several thousanddollars. If I had been given someadvice like Assisted Transitionoffers, this situation could havebeen avoided.”

Assisted Transition alsoworks with the VA to assist vet-erans in making sure they receivetheir full benefits. This service isespecially close to Mark’s heart,as he is a veteran of the AviationBranch of the United StatesArmy.

Michelle and Mark trulycare about seniors in our community and want to providefamilies the resources they needto make the transition as

community for their loved one’sneeds,” explains Michelle, a registered nurse with a specialtyin home health. “We are alsoable to help find the right respiteshort-term stay and hospicecare.”

All services are provided atno cost. A meeting is scheduledbetween either Michelle or Markand the senior and their family, either at the Assisted Transitionoffice or at the person’s home.“We assess their situation andmatch their needs and wantswith what is available in the community,” says Michelle.“Factors may include price, geographic location, servicesavailable, environment of thefacility, and much more. As aregistered nurse for 28 years, Iam also able to read between thelines and provide insight into thesenior’s needs that the familymay not be aware of.”

After the initial meeting toestablish the senior’s needs andpreferences, Mark or Michellewill narrow down the choicesavailable and personally tour andevaluate the facilities. Upondetermining the best optionsavailable, they will personallydrive the senior and family to

comfortable as possible. “This isa difficult and confusing time forfamilies, and our goal is to makethis change easier and less stress-ful for everyone involved, withpersonalized, compassionate, selfless service,” says Michelle.

In August of last year, JanBemies decided to turn a long-time hobby into a business whenshe opened Claremore’s onlyspecialty fabric store, on the corner of Blue Starr Drive andDavis Avenue. The semi-retiredchild care administrator and herdaughter-in-law, Tammy Bemies, had been discussing starting theventure for a while. While driving around Claremore oneday after dropping her childrenoff at Claremore ChristianSchool, Tammy found the littlewhite house now referred to asthe Cotton Cottage.

“We have been very lucky,”said Jan. “The owners of theproperty were phenomenal during the start-up process. Theycompleted all the upgrades weneeded and helped with theremodel of the house. They trulywere instrumental in helping getthe place open for business.”

And since they opened fivemonths ago, they haven’tstopped going. Jan and Tammyare continually looking for waysto offer their customers personalized service.

“We make a great teambecause we work so well togetherand balance each other out,” saidJan. “I do all the quilting, andTammy handles the garments

and décor. She has a wonderfuleye for color and is very creative.”

Stacked floor to ceiling,Cotton Cottage has a very largeselection of quality, name-brandfabrics. Some of their most popular brands include RedRooster, Amy Butler, Free Spirit,Blue Hill, Hoffman and RJR. Asthe store’s name suggests, all oftheir fabrics are 100 percent cotton, and they carry a widerange of colors and styles including solids, prints, floralsand children’s designs. They alsocarry some unique characterprints such as Route 66 andJohn Deere. If you are lookingfor a specific color or design thatmay not be in stock, the staff atCotton Cottage can special orderbased on supplier availability.

In addition to great, brand-name quilting and dress fabrics,Cotton Cottage also sells laminated cotton that can beused for making waterproof creations like raincoats, bags andlunch bags. They also have agood line of flannels in stockand carry patterns, notions andfat quarters.

“If you’re a quilter, youknow what fat quarters are andwe have a great selection at agood price,” said Jan. “All of ourfat quarters are high quality and

all are priced at $1.99.”The Cotton Cottage is also

home to a long-arm quiltingmachine. If a customer createsthe quilt and needs to have itsandwiched together, they canhave it done in house starting atone cent per inch plus a $10 setup fee. They also do a little bit ofspecialized embroidery and cancreate some garments.

“We want to get the wordout – whether you want to makea nice garment or complete alarge-scale quilting project, wecan help you,” said Jan. “As wegrow, we will continue to addservices that cater to the needsof our customers, and we lookforward to growing this businessand establishing a good customerbase by providing quality prod-ucts and customer service.”

But, he adds, he wishes he hadn’twaited. “I waited because I didn’t want togo through it more than once and I hadbeen told that the replacement kneewould only last 10 or 15 years. But I wishI hadn’t, because the surgery was no problem. Once the swelling went down, Iwas able to get back to normal; everythingelse was just walking and exercise. I’vehad no problems with the new knee, andwould readily recommend knee replacement by Dr. LaButti to anyoneneeding the procedure.”

Dr. LaButti recommended kneereplacement, and Burgess had the sur-gery done on his right knee. “By then, Iwas in constant pain. Walking was verydifficult, and I had developed a severelimp. Sleeping had become an on-again,off-again experience every day. I was tothe point where I would either have tohave the surgery or retire – and I’m tooyoung to retire.”

Burgess’s surgery went well, he says.“The nurses and therapists at the hospital had me up and walking with awalker the day of the surgery. After acouple days in the hospital, I wasreleased, and then I had home therapyfor a week. Aside from the swelling inmy knee, I never really experienced anypain from the surgery.”

Burgess was on the walker for twoweeks, then a cane for two more. “Afterfour weeks, I was walking without thecane,” Burgess says. “After five, I wasdriving my car and riding my motorcycle. After six, I was dancing.” After seven,Dr. LaButti released him to work without restriction. “At week seven, when I began outpatient rehabilitation,

If you’ve experienced some type ofinjury – personal, traumatic, motor vehi-cle or at work – and are in need of anattorney, you could take a chance andscour the phone book, where you’ll findan overwhelming selection of generalpractice lawyers. Or you could call some-one who focuses exclusively on thesetypes of injuries and who is focused onhis clients’ best interests at all times.According to Attorney and Counselor atLaw John Truskett, his practice standsapart from other law firms for two mainreasons. Number one, Truskett concen-trates solely on injury cases. Numbertwo, he genuinely cares about helpingpeople and getting them the compensa-tion they deserve.

checking the door’s spring or springs.“Any garage door that is wider than 12feet should utilize two springs,” heexplains. Double doors are extremelyheavy, and a single spring is not adequateto open and close the door. If you have adouble door with a single spring thatbreaks, you probably won’t be able toopen the door. If your double door hastwo torsion springs and one breaks, youshould still be able to open the door.

If you ever decide to replace a torsionspring yourself, be extremely careful andbe sure you know what you’re doingbefore attempting the replacement. Thisis one job that is best left to professionalslike Chuck Billy and his crew atAssurance Overhead Doors.

If an incorrect torsion spring isinstalled, not only may the door not openas smoothly as it should, but the door

opener usually wears out prematurely dueto an overburdening workload. AssuranceOverhead Doors will service any brand ormodel of garage door opener. “We carrythe largest selection of torsion springs onour trucks than anyone in the area,” saysChuck, “and we won’t make a replacement until we have the torsionspring recommended for your system.”

“Our doors are made in Ponca City,Oklahoma, by Mid-America Door®.Each two-car door comes standard with adual torsion-spring system,” says Chuck.Mid-America Door was founded in 1991and manufactures steel sectional overheaddoors. The founders had a combinationof vision, a thoughtful planning process, and many collective years of overheaddoor experience. Christian author Carol Roundalways tells people, “If you hadtold me when I was younger thatI would be speaking in front oflarge groups of my peers, I wouldhave replied, 'I don't think so!'”The only ‘C’ Carol ever made incollege was in speech class. “Iwas so nervous, I would grip thepodium with sweating hands. SoI tell people now, ‘God reallydoes have a sense of humor.’”No one is more surprised thanCarol when she looks over theevents of the last year and real-izes that she has not only spokenon several occasions in front oflarge groups of women, but hasbeen interviewed on numerousradio stations across the U.S.and appeared on Christian televi-sion programs, including stationsin Atlanta, Georgia and SantaFe, New Mexico. "When I firstreceived requests to speak, I wasnervous and wasn't sure I coulddo it," says Carol. "However, mypastor said, 'Carol, God doesn'tcall the equipped; he equips thecalled.' He was telling me totrust God and keep my eyes onHim."

Carol’s speaking topics arebased on her writing, which, unlike speaking, she has always

used as daily devotionals. Herfifth book, "by FAITH alone,"another collection of hercolumns, was released inNovember.

With these completed projects under her belt, Carolhas received even more requeststo speak at women’s events, andher audiences continue to growin size. Her topics are designedto aid women in their personaland spiritual growth, with suchseminar titles as “Journalingwith Jesus,” “Perfecting yourPersonality,” and “Sharing yourFaith Story.” Carol often incor-porates humor into her writingand speaking, which is evidencedby other speech titles: “Are Youa Worry Wart?,” “I’m notMartha Stewart,” and “Don’tLook at Your Butt in theDressing Room Mirror.”

“I want to encourage otherwomen,” says Carol. "We live ina broken, confusing world. If weallow the media to dominate ourlives with all the negative news,we could easily just give up."

This call to encourage otherswas what helped Carol to notonly overcome her fear of speaking to her peers, but toactually enjoy the experience.

She began doingsmall group sessions on the topicof prayer journaling and wasasked at every session, “Do youhave a book?” With writing asher first love, Carol did not haveto be urged very strongly to produce what her listeners wereasking for: "Journaling withJesus: How to Draw Closer toGod." After receiving morerequests to speak, she publisheda companion workbook to helpwomen put the principleslearned in "Journaling withJesus" to practical use for them-selves. Her workbook, "The 40-Day Challenge," is her fourthbook. She has also authored "AMatter of Faith" and "FaithMatters," both compilations ofher weekly column, which can be

This brand-new technology produces a3-D image of the knee which allows for superior surgical accuracy and alignment. When compared to more traditional forms of navigation, theiBlock cutting guide provides a significant advantage not only for the surgeon, but for the patient as well.

When a joint is replaced, even a miniscule misalignment between theimplant and the bones can harm joint performance and longevity. This innovative technique allows for precisemeasurements made dynamically inreal time.

There are only five “iBlock” units in theUnited States, and this technology is available in Tulsa only with Dr. LaButti.
