“Valley News and Views” is a publication of the Valley of Cambridge, A.A.S.R., and is published four times each year.

SPRING CLASS TO BE NAMED FOR ROGER C GAUL, 33° The Valley of Cambridge has named its Spring 2014 Class for Roger C Gaul, 33°. Illustrious Brother Gaul was raised a Master Mason in Shade River #453 at Chester, Ohio in 1963 and served as Master in 1990. Roger joined the Valley of Cambridge with the Fall Class of 1991, served as Most Wise Master of Rose Croix in 2011/2012, and received his 33° in 2005 at Grand Rapids, Michigan. He is a member and past presiding officer of the York Rite Bodies of Middleport, Ohio. He is a Knight York Grand Cross of Honour, a member of the Red Cross of Constantine, the Ohio College of Societas Rosicruciana in Civitatibus Foederatis, Order of Eastern Star and a variety of other appendant masonic bodies. He was the York Rite’s Most Illustrious Grand Master of Royal & Select Masons of Ohio in 2003 and Grand Governor York Rite College in Ohio. He served for 11 years on the Eastern Local School Board and is now president of the Meigs County Health Board. Roger was born in Chester, Ohio, is retired from E I Dupont after 37 years as a mechanic and supervisor, and restores/collects antique Allis Chalmers tractors. Roger and his wife Paula live on a farm near Pomeroy, Ohio and he is the father of a son, Roger II, and a daughter, Lea Ann, and five grandchildren. The Valley of Cambridge is happy and honored to name their 2014 Spring Class for Roger Gaul, 33° in recognition of his many years of service to masonry and his community.

The first dues notices were sent out in

October and the second dues notice in mid

January. I am still working on addresses as we get

returned mail not only from the dues notices but

also from the Valley News and Views and the

Northern Light. The newsletters are not forwarded

but they come back to us. Each of them gets some

attention but at times you can spend a lot of time

looking and still not have an address. It is possible

to update your address and e-mail on line. Dues

can also be paid on line and each year more and

more members are taking advantage of this

service. Actually when I talk with our printer who

also does our mailing we are not in bad shape with

our address list, but it continues to be something

that needs work. Thanks for your help.

The Grand Masters One Day Class will be

April 5. I think that is the date in most, if not all, of

the Masonic Districts. Hopefully there will be more

than a few new masons who will want to affiliate

with the Scottish Rite. The Spring Reunion will be

April 12 and it will be a one day reunion. We seem

to have had nice classes for one day reunions and

hopefully this spring will see

a nice class also. In this

newsletter is a petition and

if you need more just let me

know. Blank petitions we

have and candidates we

need.

We are trying to get

this newsletter in the mail so

that it might get to you before the March 10

Degrees and Dinner at Lafayette #79. It may or

may not make it. Bulk mailings are not at the top of

the priority list for the postal service. Hopefully if it

gets to you in time you will give us a call, for a

reservation, and be in attendance. The first time at

Marietta and last year at Newcomerstown we had

good turnouts, good food, and a great time. We

sent an invitation to about 400 of the Valley’s

members with a Muskingum County mailing

address. Hopefully they will take this opportunity to

witness a couple of degrees and a free meal. See

2014 ABBOTT SCHOLARSHIP Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Cambridge

APPLICATION DATE: April 1, 2014 Named for Leon M. Abbott, Sovereign Grand Commander from 1921 to 1932, the Scholarship Program provides financial support for the continuing education of young men and women from Scottish Rite families and Masonic-related youth groups. Since1951, more than $3 million has been awarded to students in the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction.

Eligibility: Those meeting any of the following criteria are eligible to apply for the 2014 Abbott Scholarship program: ♦ A Scottish Rite Mason of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction who is currently enrolled at an

accredited college or university in an undergraduate program. ♦ A child of a Scottish Rite Mason of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction, who is a high school senior or

currently enrolled at an accredited college or university in an undergraduate program, who has attained a minimum grade point average of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale.

♦ A member of DeMolay, Rainbow or Jobs Daughters in the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction who is a high school senior or currently enrolled at an accredited college or university in an undergraduate program, who has attained a minimum grade point average of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale.

The submission date for the Valley of Cambridge is April 1, 2014 either received in the office or postmarked. Applicants must complete the form, sign the form, include all supporting documents (needed is the most recent transcript either high school or college, FAFSA form not the confirmation or worksheet, and a letter of recommendation from an ACADEMIC instructor, counselor, or advisor), and submit one copy to the Valley Secretary. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered.

On May 12 The Valley will have their

installation of officers for 2014/2015. This event is

scheduled for the Masonic Lodge in Cambridge

and will be an open installation. Page 5 in the

lower right hand corner has more information.

Hopefully you and your spouse can be with us as

we install the new officers and say “job well done”

to some of the officers who have completed their

time in office. Reservations will be needed. We try

to keep the cost as low as possible with the hope

that members will attend.

Charles Paine, 33° the Valley’s Degree

Director recently pointed out to me that many

Valleys have a Choir to compliment their degree

work. He is looking for Valley members who might

want to be a part of this new endeavor. If you have

any interest please let me know and I will pass it

along to Charles.

At the top of Page 2 is the information on

the Abbott Scholarships. Each year there seems to

be one of two applications that are not considered

for one reason or another. The most common

issue is the FAFSA form. This is a multipage form

and what we sometimes get is the e-mail

confirmation that the form has been filed and we

have received worksheets. This is not the FAFSA

form and they will not be considered. Another item

is the letter of recommendation. I suppose that

your next door neighbor could be considered an

“advisor” but what we are looking for is an

“Academic” instructor, counselor, or advisor. Lots

of luck with your application but please remember

to sign the form. Also we only need the original

PERRY COUNTY SCOTTISH RITE CLUB The Perry County Scottish Rite Club will hold its next meeting on March 27,

2014 at 7:30 p.m. at Peerless Lodge #591 in Crooksville. The primary purpose of this

meeting will be to plan activities for the remainder of 2014. All Scottish Rite members

are welcome to attend and be a part of this club and their activities. The officers for

WASHINGTON COUNTY SCOTTISH RITE CLUB

The Washington County Scottish Rite Club will hold its annual ox roast

on Saturday June 7 at 6:00 p.m. at Masonic Park in Devola. This ox roast is

open to all Scottish Rite Masons, their families and guests. The Washington

County Scottish Rite Club meets at 7:30 p.m. on the 4th Friday of each

month, except November and December, at the Marietta Masonic Temple.

EAST OHIO SCOTTISH RITE CLUB

Larry Paine MSA, president of the East Ohio Scottish Rite Club has announced,

that their Spring Dinner Meeting will be Thursday March 20, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. at the

Monroe #189 F&AM in Woodsfield. Cost of the dinner will be $10.00 and reservations

are needed. The program will be about the activity that is taking place in our county

courthouses related to title searches for the oil and gas drilling and production in

southeastern Ohio. Scottish Rite Members, spouses, guests and especially candidates

for the Valley of Cambridge’s Spring Reunion are welcome to attend. For additional

We recently celebrated our 13th anniversary at a Valentine's dinner/dance hosted by the Guernsey Chapter #211 OES and Guernsey #66 F&AM. There is much to celebrate. Conducting 14,500 tutoring sessions and tutoring 250 children over 13 years is notable. These children’s lives have been enriched through the generosity of the Masonic groups. We thank the Valley of Cambridge, the Eastern Stars and the Masonic Lodge for supporting us from the beginning.

A new incentive This spring we intend to offer area teachers an opportunity to participate in our Orton-Gillingham training. This will be similar to the Columbus Dyslexia Center partnership with the Westerville School District mentioned in the November Northern Light and we may have grant funding. Why would teachers be interested in this rigorous training?

• There are bills in the Ohio Legislature; HB 96, HB 157, and also in the U.S. Congress; H.Res. #456, that recognize the need for teachers to address the needs of dyslexic children. Google: Cassidy house resolution 456 for more information.

• The Scottish Rite Orton Gillingham program has the necessary approval and accreditation to provide training mandated by these bills.

• The skills teachers learn will be helpful as the Ohio Third Grade Reading Guarantee is implemented.

T h e t u t o r i n g environment at the Dyslexia Center is unique and beneficial for all concerned. Teachers have the benefit of working one-on-one with children in a supervised practicum in the Dyslexia Center environment. They will be implementing and practicing their new skills under the guidance of experienced tutors. With this certification, they will be “ahead of the curve” as the movement to recognize the needs of dyslexic students gains momentum.

From the Scottish Rite’s perspective: A major part of the Scottish Rite mission has always been to provide our tutor-training program to public and private school teachers. Our expertise is gained from hours of work over the past 13 years and we are anxious to share what we have learned with area teachers during this endeavor.

Welcome 'ome mate! We eagerly await the return of our very first Dyslexia Center Graduate who spent last year in Australia. Join us at our graduation ceremony on May 22 at the Masonic Lodge on Wheeling Ave. at 6:00pm to hear of her successes down under and our students successes right here in Cambridge. FREE SCOTTISH RITE AUDITORIUM SHOWS FREE

There are still two opportunities for Scottish Rite Masons of the Valley of Cambridge to attend

performances in the Auditorium at no charge.

On March 26, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. the Cambridge Lions Club will present their variety show. The show is entitled “Marvelous MoTown & More” and I am sure the music will be entertaining. The interruptions and antics will produce surprises and more than a few laughs. On May 15, 2014 at 7:30 p.m.the Cambridge Singers will present their show entitled “Through

the Years”. This is the Cambridge Singers 50th annual show and will feature music from that time

period. The Cambridge Singers are supposedly the oldest mixed chorus in Ohio. These shows are

always well attended and the community’s support has been excellent.

The Cambridge Lions Variety Show and the Cambridge Singers Spring Show are both excellent

entertainment. I hope you will consider being in attendance and having a good time. After all, it is free

and as a member you are part owner of the Auditorium.

Remember all of these performances are free to Scottish Rite Members and their families.
