FROM THE BOARD Summary of Board Highlights and Decisions

Thursday, February 5, 2004 Human Resources, Program & Religious Affairs Committee

_____________________________________________________________________________________ May committee meeting change The May meeting of the Human Resources, Program and Religious Affairs Committee has been changed to Monday, May 10th. It was originally scheduled for Thursday, May 6th, which falls during Catholic Education Week (Sunday, May 2nd to Friday, May 7th.) A number of special activities planned for that week in addition to local activities planned in individual schools. These include the finale to the Board’s 50th anniversary celebrations, the annual TCDSB History Fair (May 6th) and the presentation of TCDSB Sports Alumni Awards at the annual TCSAA and TDCAA Coaches' Recognition Dinner. To allow for Trustees and senior staff to fully participate in these various events, the May meeting schedule has been adjusted. The Trustee Services Committee will meet at 5:30 p.m. on May 10th, with the HR meeting beginning at 7 p.m. Preliminary report regarding grade 9 high school choices The Board received a report, which outlined that of 6,658 applications received from Toronto Catholic District School Board grade 8 students, 6,445 have indicated a TCDSB secondary school as the school of choice. Some students from other boards have also chosen a TCDSB secondary school. According to information received as of January 29th, 97 percent of TCDSB grade 8 students who have returned applications are indicating that they would like to attend a TCDSB secondary school. TCDSB students perform well on recent CAT/3 and Gates MacGinitie Reading Tests Results from the most recent CAT/3 assessment of grade 8 students, and the Gates MacGinitie Reading Test for grade 3 and 5 students were presented to the Board. The 2003 CAT/3 results indicate that TCDSB’s grade 8 students are performing at or above the national norm for all CAT/3 subtests of language arts and mathematics. Results from the Gates MacGinitie Reading Tests show grade 3 and 5 students performing at the national average, however grade 5 scores are somewhat lower than grade 3 scores. Our Water, Our Wetlands on the wall at St. Brigid MICHELE McLEAN Feb. 6, 2004 Mirror/Guardian Newspaper A Riverdale artist helped students bring a swamp to their school. Pamela Schuller worked with 459 grades 3 to 8 students at St. Brigid Catholic School, at 176 Leslie St., to create a permanent 3-D display on

the school's wall of a wetlands environment. The display is about 40-feet long. It includes animals, plants and birds, made out of papier mache and is affixed to the wall with chicken wire. After the presentation, Grade 8 student Andrew Francis, 13, pointed out an owl on the mosaic that he helped make. "It's important to learn about the wetlands," he said. Although he liked the papier mache making during the project, he said painting the owl was his favourite part. Josh Grainger, another Grade 8 student, said students worked in pairs with the artist for two days. "It was fun," he said. Kelsey Coxson, a Grade 7 student, created a yellow water lily for the project. "I learned a lot," Coxson said. Last week, the school celebrated the mosaic titled Our Water, Our Wetlands with a launch, which included Schuller, the students, school trustees Paul Crawford (Ward 12), Angela Kennedy (Ward 11), MPP Marilyn Churley (Toronto-Danforth), Ward 31 Councillor Janet Davis (Beaches-East York), MPP Michael Prue (Beaches-East York), Chris Conti from Friends of Second Marsh and Mark Mattson, an environmental lawyer. "The students have created a masterpiece that will be shared with other students for years to come," Kennedy told the students at the launch. Prue said, "We all have a role to play to save our environment." Davis said the work is beautiful. "Congratulations on your amazing work." Conti showed the students a slide presentation about the Second Marsh in Oshawa and explained how the wetlands are important to the environment. "It's a great opportunity to provide learning through the arts," Schuller told the students. "Working with the students at St. Brigid has been a pleasure."

Cops mark Black History Month By RON FANFAIR

'Gains made, but more work to be done': Augustine Black History Month provides Canadians with an opportunity to celebrate African-Canadians achievements and also reflect on the trials and tribulations that Blacks faced in their struggle for equal rights, says Secretary of State for Multiculturalism Jean Augustine. "Over the years, Black Canadians have faced discrimination and the denial of equal rights," Augustine reminded the audience at the 10th annual Toronto Police Services (TPS) Black History Month launch last week. "Today, we can point to the great strides that we have made in creating a society where every citizen can feel an equal sense of belonging and an equal sense of being included. Yet, more remains to be done." In spite of the gains made, Augustine said that Canada couldn't boast of being a fully inclusive society. "We still have work to do in making sure that everyone has the opportunity to participate in the economic, political and cultural life of Canada," she said. "Black History Month, by promoting an increased knowledge of our collective stance, is an excellent way to help shape the Canada we want for our children…a country where differences are not merely accepted, but embraced and celebrated." Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services Monte Kwinter concurred with Augustine, adding that the history of Blacks in Canada is an important part of Canada's history. "The history we celebrate this month was written in the courage and persistence of the people who broke free from oppression," Kwinter said. "Even today, there are issues of racism faced by people in the Black community and that's why it's so important that we continue to work, promote and celebrate diversity in our society." Keynote speaker In keeping with this year's theme "An Investment in Our Future", organizers invited sensational 12-year-old motivational speaker Jamaal Hunte to deliver the keynote address. "In our daily lives, let us try not to see people first through colour or race, but as individual human beings," he encouraged the gathering. "…Now is the time to rid our nation from the quicksand of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood." Mayor David Miller praised the TPS and Chief Julian Fantino for partnering with the Black community to improve police/ community relations. The TPS has fostered partnerships with several Black community organizations, including the Jamaican Canadian Association (JCA), United Mothers Opposing Violence Everywhere (UMOVE) and Tropicana Community Services. Sergeant Terry James of the Employment Unit/Recruiting conceived the idea for the Toronto Police Black History Month celebrations a decade ago. "I am very proud of the fact that this event has grown over the years," said James. "However, I would like to see more Black officers be part of the celebrations and be proud of who they are." Several retired Black officers, including Larry McLarty who broke the colour bar in 1960 by becoming the first Black to be recruited by Toronto Police, were honoured at the TPS Black History Month launch two years ago.

TESS KALINOWSKI, EDUCATION REPORTER

They sit on the frontlines of the battle against childhood obesity.

Teachers like Nick Biagini of St. Bernard Elementary School near Jane and Lawrence, try to imbue their students with some of their own passion for physical fitness.

Biagini heads up the St. Bernard's Roadrunners, a club of about 100 students who run through the school's hallways when the weather doesn't permit outdoor exercise.

"I hear all these alarming statistics about obesity and this is our part in fighting it," says the Grade 7 teacher and cross-country coach, who doesn't have a physical education speciality but wants to share his own love of running.

He rewards his runners' dedication — they put in two to four kilometres a week — with a T-shirt and a Greatest Achievement Award bestowed during morning announcements. "Every year we get more and more kids joining. They love the health benefits and they love hearing their names on the announcements, and they love that they're the only ones in the school with that T-Shirt," says Biagini.

The Toronto Catholic District School Board's physical education co-ordinator, Tony Pettiti, depends on generalist elementary teachers like Biagini to deliver physical education to elementary students because the board doesn't hire specialist gym teachers at that level. Ontario's school funding formula doesn't allocate dollars specifically for specialities like gym, music and the arts. That means school boards have to find ways of making physical education a priority even in schools that don't have a passionate advocate like Biagini.

The Catholic board is implementing Physical Activity Action Planning that will require all its schools to submit plans on how they'll increase the level of activity for students. "We're asking principals to submit plans on how they can increase the activity levels for kids," said Pettiti.

The Toronto District School Board is doing a similar pilot in 35 of its schools, making physical activity part of the overall school improvement plans, said district-wide Co-ordinator for Health and Physical Education Richard Ward.

The boards are working together on a TV Turnoff Week May 3 to 9.

Pettiti calls it "a real example of collaboration between both the school board, Toronto Public Health, parks and recreation, libraries, the zoo, cultural institutions and the Toronto Heart Health partnership."

A holistic approach to the problem of childhood inactivity could hold the key to averting an impending health crisis, said Andy Anderson, a professor at University of Toronto's Ontario Institute for Studies in Education.

"The community has to assert its value on this. If the board isn't going to give you the money for a swimming program (the community) has to find a way to support that initiative," he said. Research shows children perform better in school if they get physical activity, he said.

"I would argue that the way to get numeracy and literacy is about getting children who feel good about going to school and one way that happens is often through physically active engagement," said Anderson. "Why aren't we looking at playgrounds that invite imaginative activity through the physical? We ask kids to stand out on the blacktop and not have any equipment and the kids start fighting with each other."

The Toronto-based Foundation for Active Healthy Kids, a national charitable organization advocating for children's activity, targets parents as the best bet for increasing activity levels. "The most common statistic is with respect to obesity rates," said spokesperson Michelle Brownrigg. "That is something we're aware of, but essentially, physical activity has been on the decline for more than a decade and the ages at which kids are becoming inactive is becoming lower."

The National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth, released last year by Statistics Canada, showed that in 2002, 37 per cent of Canadian children aged 2 to 11 were overweight. About 29 per cent of children 10 to 11 fell into the overweight category, but about 45 per cent of toddlers, aged 2 to 3, were heavy.

While there's been a trend in Canada toward renewed commitment to physical education curriculums, families are still struggling to put activity into households where both parents work or a single parent is fighting the clock, said Brownrigg.

That's where the community comes in because too often parents are isolated. "Do you have stressed out single mothers? How do we build a community where one day somebody takes two kids to an activity structured or unstructured?" she said.

In the meantime, Brownrigg suggests there are things parents can do: Look for opportunities for unstructured activity, which has suffered because security concerns mean many

parents won't let their children play outdoors unsupervised. Look at the time your family is spending on the TV and computer. Try reducing the amount of sedentary time spent in passive activities. "If you're doing interactive play — things

that have more stimulation — that begins a process of removing the passivity of our lifestyle," she said. Leave the TV off during dinner sometimes. When planning a birthday party, put some physical activity on the agenda. Make activity time special by treasuring it as a family or allowing older children to use it as a time to get together

with their friends. If you're driving the kids to the pool or rink, look for an activity you can do as an adult while the children are

busy with their program. Parental awareness is key, says Bayview Secondary School vice-principal Susan Logue. "Parents don't have a clue what kids are doing in the evening. They think kids are on the computer doing homework when they're on MSN. (Kids) are in worlds today where they can be indoors 24 hours and involve very little physical movement."

Chicken Soup on menu for St. Joseph's students MICHELE McLEAN Beaches Mirror Feb. 13, 2004 Students at St. Joseph Catholic School in Riverdale received a taste of Chicken Soup for the Canadian Soul when the book's co-author, Janet Matthews, visited the school. The school dedicates the month of February to demonstrate empathy, understanding and compassion by studying the Chicken Soup books.

The series of books include Chicken Soup for the Soul, Chicken Soup for the Parent's Soul, Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul and Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul.

St. Joseph students started studying the books when a Grade 3 student was bullied in the schoolyard in the fall of 2002.

After the incident, a parent came up the idea of studying the books and the parent council, principal, teachers, school trustee and parish priest embraced the idea, said Marlene O'Leary, parent council secretary.

Grades 5 to 8 students had a chance to listen to Matthews and ask questions. A student asked about why the books refer to chicken soup.

"In some cultures chicken soup makes you feel better, emotionally and spiritually," Matthews said.

Grade 6 student Jamaica Ty asked Matthews how she felt when she read the stories that were submitted for the book. "It must have been hard to choose," Ty said.

"The stories were the greatest and the saddest," Matthews said. "These were people who were writing their dreams. They dealt with death and children being sick. It was very emotional."

Matthews told the students some of the stories in the book include famous Canadians Paul Henderson, Rick Hanson, Terry Fox and Wayne Gretzky.

The book also includes stories about people whose names might not be recognized.

She told the story of a six-year-old boy who lives near Ottawa and raised money for a well for students in Africa. "We as Canadians have so much," Matthews said.

"This boy at age six found out not only did kids in Africa not have toys or food, but they didn't even have water to drink. It was dirty. So he decided to build a well for them."

Matthews said through fundraising the boy succeeded and six years later, he still continues to raise money for more wells in Africa. "His mission statement is that everyone in Africa will have clean water," she said. "He's one of our Canadian heroes."

Matthews is a writer, editor, speaker and teacher. Along with co-authoring Chicken Soup for the Canadian Soul, she produced and edited Chicken Soup for the Parent's Soul. At the end of her presentation, students surrounded her to get her autograph. "Visiting schools is a good thing to do," Matthews said. "I know teachers use the chicken soup books in the classroom. Kids can connect with the stories and they start discussions."

Speaker keeps history alive Black History Month STAVROULA MEDITSKOS Etobicoke Guardian Feb. 13, 2004

History never dies. That's what Bryan Walls wants today's youth to know as they write tomorrow's history. The author and lecturer took his message to students of Our Lady of Victory Catholic School Tuesday morning in a speech about the Underground Railroad - part of Black History Month events at the school. "History has a way of coming back to us," Walls told a gymnasium full of Grades 7, 8 and special needs students. "A lot of the problems we have today are from problems we had during the days of slavery. 9/11 happened because of great hate in the world that stemmed from history," he said. Walls is the great-grandson of John Freeman Walls, a slave from North Carolina who escaped to Canada via the Underground Railroad, which was started in 1804 in Columbia, Penn. by Quaker abolitionist Levi Coffin.

When Walls reached Canada in 1846, he and his wife Jane King Walls built a log cabin in Puce, Ont., which was used as one of the railroad's terminals. The terminal was designated a historic site and is now a museum in Puce, near the Windsor-Detroit border.

A dentist by trade, Bryan Walls is also the author of The Road That Led to Somewhere, an epic about his family's journey that is being made into a Broadway play and movie. He also lectures on race relations for new recruits on Toronto's Police Service.

In his speech, Walls talked about slavery's effects on black people while drawing on his own personal experiences. "Every society has gone through trials and tribulations, even slavery; but those slaves who came from Africa were treated, in the minds of the people holding them, like they weren't human. For 400 years, people thought blacks couldn't do regular things or be doctors or lawyers," he said. "Even today, I have to keep reminding people that I am like everyone else," he said.

Walls reminded students that as tomorrow's leaders, the actions they take today will determine the future, much like how his family's actions helped improve the plight of black people in Canada. "Mutual respect isn't just love, it's the first step toward reconciliation between people of different races and faiths," he said.

"The Underground Railroad was the first great freedom movement of the Americas. It was the first time people from different races and faiths worked together for harmony and justice," he said.

Walls urged students to be good citizens and praised Canada for its record on human rights and freedoms. "Canada may still have many challenges in terms of race relations, but based on my family's experiences - and they've been here for eight generations - there is no better country to live in than Canada," he said.

Principal Lillian Kurnik said the school was touched by Walls's story. "Every now and then we meet people who leave a mark on our lives, who we admire for their work. Dr. Walls, you are one of those people," said Kurnik as she presented Walls with a plaque from the school and community.

Grade 8 student Ellis Lewis said the speech enlightened him about the struggles of black people and the contributions they made to society. Fellow classmate Kyle Williams agreed. "Certain cultures weren't respected at times, but people need to see that we're all the same, that black people were no different than others," he said.

"Black History Month is Canada's history and we're learning how helpful black people were and what they did to help the country."

Abbey students cash in during stock challenge Feb. 6, 2004 Mirror/Guardian A team of students at North York's Loretto Abbey Catholic Secondary School outbid, outsold and otherwise outperformed teams from a number of other Toronto-area high schools at a special Stock Market Challenge event last week. The event provided students with an opportunity to learn about the equities market and actually engage in some mock trading to help them learn the ins and outs of the stock world.

$886,511

The winning team, which consisted of Loretto Abbey students Daphne Chan, Iris Chau, Paula Chrobak and Emma Sako, finished with a mock portfolio valued at $886,511, up roughly 77 per cent from the $500,000 imaginary fund with which they started the event.

"The Stock Market Challenge gave us a hands-on opportunity to learn how the equities market operates and how to invest in and trade on the stock market," Chan said.

WORLD TRADERS

The team was given pointers by a pair of CIBC world traders, who advised the participants on how to invest and diversify their portfolio to increase the odds of getting a good return.

The Stock Market Challenge was organized by Junior Achievement, which encourages students to learn about and participate in entrepreneurial, creative and business-world activities.

School aims for OFSAA berth VOLLEYBALL SAM LASKARIS Feb. 11, 2004 Etobicoke Guardian Fielding a youthful lineup this season has not led to growing pains for the Michael Power/St. Joseph senior girls' volleyball squad. In fact, the Etobicoke-based club was expected to finish atop the standings in the nine-team West Division of its Toronto Catholic schools league.

Michael Power/St. Joseph was in first place in its division with a 6-1 mark as it headed into its final match of the regular season.

The local side was scheduled to play against Bishop Marrocco yesterday (Tuesday), a contest held after The Guardian's press deadline.

Michael Power/St. Joseph entered that match as a huge favourite since Bishop Marrocco had failed to win any of its seven previous matches.

Regardless of the outcome of that game, Michael Power/St. Joseph will be considered one of the favourites to win the league title when the playoffs begin next week.

"They're doing amazing," said Michael Power/St. Joseph coach Jeannine Froude.

The club's roster includes 15 players. And Froude, who is in her first season of coaching the team, believes about a half dozen of them are still eligible to compete in the junior ranks.

In fact, four out of the club's six starters are juniors. They include Grade 9 twins Kristen and Nicole Kost as well as Grade 10 students Sarah Medri and Alana Battitston.

The club's other starters are Laura Holland, who is in Grade 11, and Jen Lunardo, a Grade 12 student.

"The girls are a really good bunch," Froude said. "We practice four times a week and they all show up. They're very dedicated and committed."

It's no secret what the Michael Power/St. Joseph squad is shooting for this season. "We're hoping to get to OFSAA, knock on wood," Froude said.

The local school is hoping to compete at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association's AAAA tournament. That event is scheduled for March 10 and 11 in Kitchener.

In order to qualify for the provincials, Michael Power/St. Joseph would have to win its own league playoffs.

Failing that, the club could also earn an OFSAA berth by being the highest finishing AAAA school in the local playoffs. OFSAA will also stage A, AA and AAA tournaments this season. The local league is allowed to send a representative to provincial championships in each of the categories.

Falcons eye OFSAA berth SAM LASKARIS Scarborough Mirror Feb. 11, 2004 Coach Ainsworth is hoping to lead the Francis Libermann Falcons to another appearance at the provincial high school senior girls' volleyball championships. But this year it is Mark Ainsworth and not his wife, Syliva, who's guiding the Scarborough-based club.

Sylvia handled the seniors coaching duties for the Falcons last season while Mark was in charge of the Libermann junior girls' squad. The couple have flip-flopped duties this season.

The senior Falcons advanced to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) AAA tournament in Chatham last winter.

Though they did not win a medal, the Falcons did return home with the Good Spirit Award.

So far this season, the club is proving it just might have what it takes to qualify for OFSAA again and possibly even win a medal if it does compete in the provincial championships.

Libermann was sporting a perfect 7-0 record in the East Division of its Toronto Catholic schools league as it headed into its final regular season outing yesterday (Tuesday) against Jean Vanier (after The Scarborough Mirror's press deadline).

Mark Ainsworth is not surprised at how well the senior Falcons are faring thus far.

"It's a pretty good team," he said. "And they're really big compared to others."

The Falcons roster includes six-footer Paria Pishva. Though the Grade 12 student had only previously represented her school in track and field competitions, she was finally convinced to suit up for the Francis Libermann basketball team earlier this season.

That experience went well and Pishva then decided to also suit up for the volleyball squad.

"She's just progressed so well," Ainsworth said, adding Pishva has earned herself a starting role.

The Falcons roster also includes Cheryl Cobbina, who plans on following in the footsteps of her successful athletic siblings.

Cobbina's sister Jennifer is on a track and field scholarship at Indiana University while her brother Chris is on a basketball scholarship at Ohio Valley, a Division II school. Cobbina is hoping to land a volleyball scholarship from an American university.

The club's 12-player roster includes four individuals who also represented the school at OFSAA a year ago.

The Falcons are hoping to qualify for OFSAA's AAA event, scheduled for March 10 and 11 in Newmarket.

Ainsworth believes Francis Libermann was content simply participating at the provincials a year ago. And he thinks the Falcons will set their goals higher should they advance to the Ontario championships again this season.

"I think they'll be going there with the intention of getting a medal," he said.

Time is now for Blues: coach Bowled over SAM LASKARIS More from this authorFeb. 11, 2004 They're sitting in the middle of the pack, but the coach of the Senator O'Connor Blues believes volleyball success is still a strong possibility. Lorraine Kelly said the school's senior girls team has a large advantage thanks to a veteran-laden roster.

"We don't have any fifth-year players but we do have five Grade 12 players," Kelly said.

The Blues won three out of their first six matches this season.

With its 3-3 record, Senator O'Connor was tied for fourth place with two other clubs in the nine-team East Division of the Toronto Catholic schools league.

Mother Teresa and Cardinal Newman also had identical 3-3 records. Senator O'Connor, which could not finish higher than fourth in its divisional standings, was in control of its own destiny.

That's because the Blues were scheduled to play Mother Teresa and Cardinal Newman in their final two regular season matchups.

Senator O'Connor was scheduled to play Mother Teresa yesterday (Tuesday), after The Mirror's press deadline. The Blues will battle Cardinal Newman today.

The top five finishers in the East Division advance to the league's A playoffs. Squads that place sixth through ninth are relegated to the league's B-category playoffs. The Blues this season have been led by power hitter Natalie Tam and middle blocker Clarissa Ponce.

Kelly believes her squad will finish among the top five in its division and go on to enjoy some playoff success.

"I'm confident in my girls," she said. "If they play to their abilities, I think they can beat some of the higher seeds."
