We milk 5,000 cows housed on dry lots and the somatic cell is 80,000 in the fresh cow barn, 50,000 in another barn, and 200,000 in the barn with staph cows. Production averages 75 pounds. Two barns are on Express Pre/Post and the hospital barn, which needs extra conditioning, is predipped with Express and postdipped with Valiant Pre/Post. During the winter we put more of the cows on Encore Barrier. We do a lot of different things to keep our low somatic cell counts low and the teat dips certainly help. ValiantValiantValiant:Valiant:ValiantValiantValiantValiant:ValiantValiantValiant“We have had good results with Valiant Barrier for quite some time, about 5 years now.

We were using 1% iodine before, but we were looking for a barrier for winter weather con-ditions (cows housed in open lots). I had heard good things about Valiant: other people said it worked, and it does. We signifi cantly reduced clinical cases during wet weather. Our SCC was good before, but we felt we could hold it down better through the winter and the rest of the year with Valiant Barrier, so we decided to use it year ‘round. With a SCC average of 100,000 on 2,000 cows milking 70 pounds on 3X, the milk quality bonus is signifi cant. Valiant Barrier also keeps teats in good condition – I feel that’s a big part of is signifi cant. Valiant Barrier also keeps teats in good condition – I feel that’s a big part of is signifi cantmastitis control. Plus it seals off the teats, which is important when it’s muddy or wet.”

Jeff Lund, OwnerV & L Dairy, Wendell, ID

“Anything we can do to improve milk quality and the mastitis clinical rate is all benefi cial – the teat dip is an important part of the program. We switched from an iodine dip to Valiant Barrier several years ago because we needed a barrier for the 300 of our 1,200 cows that were housed in sawdust-bed-ded freestalls. Valiant Barrier has been a superior product. We use it on all the cows - if it’s good in the most challenged area, it’s got to be good for the least challenged area. Our SCC is down, we have fewer clinical cases, and we’re averaging 88 pounds per cow per day. Though it’s hard to say what has helped the most (of all the mastitis prevention practices employed), when milk prices were low and we were looking for areas to cut expenses, we left the teat dip part alone. We’ve achieving the quality goals that we set out to achieve, so now we need to change our SCC goal from 150,000 to 120,000. Skin condition is very good. If Valiant Barrier was not a su-perior product, teat condition would be a problem on the early-lactation cows, which are milked four times a day. In the winter, we really like Artec for the fresh cows and the hospital pen. The entire herd is dipped with Artec when it’s really cold. Dave (ABS sales rep) is here every day for reproductive work so he takes care of all our dip needs. That’s a real plus. What we do out here on these dairies is for the bottom line and there may be 100 ways to get there. We’re achieving the profi tability we need - it (teat dip program) is working for us.”

ExpressExpress:“We switched from an iodine teat dip with glycerin to Express almost fi ve years ago and

never looked back. Wet weather was making a mess of the corrals and we were picking up one or two new cases of mastitis a day. With Express, the clinical rate dropped immediately. We continue to have a low rate of clinicals (17% on an annual basis, less than 1.5% per month). Our 1,100 registered Jerseys average 17,000 pounds of milk on 2X with an SCC that stays consis-tently below 200,000. Express stains the teats well and skin condition is good. Using Express tently below 200,000. Express stains the teats well and skin condition is good. Using Express tently below 200,000has also meant a lot less barrel changing.”

Kelvin Moss, OwnerMountain Shadow Dairy, Litchfi eld Park, Arizona

“We were struggling with high SCC during El Nino when we had nearly 60 inches of rain (15 to 18 inches is normal). We saw a reduction in SCC and mastitis after making three changes: switching to Express for predipping and postdipping, singeing udders, and dragging and cleaning corral aprons daily. While our counts were decreasing, we tried a cheaper dip – but you get what you pay for. Over time our counts were going up and mastitis was increasing, so we went back to Express and it has helped us keep our SCC down. Express has been one of the tools in our total mastitis control program for four or fi ve years now; currently we use it as a predip and postdip during the winter and as a postdip the rest of the year. Teat condition is good and our clinical rate is about two per month on 850 cows milking 70 pounds per day on a 2X milking schedule. I especially like how clean and neat the system is: the dip is automatically mixed in a self-contained unit and applied with a power dipper. There’s no mess on fl oors and barrels, which is important here since we give many tours and we’re meticulous about keeping everything clean. Ap-plication requires basically zero maintenance, which helps us keep tasks simple so they will get done. When something works, we don’t like to change.”

John Konyn, Owner, John Konyn & Son DairyValley Center, CA

“In our 500 cow dairy, our SCC dropped from over 300,000 down to 150,000 – dropped in half - after we started working with our ABS representative Oscar Duarte in udder health management. The drop started when we started on Express as a pre dip and Valiant Pre-Post as a management. The drop started when we started on Express as a pre dip and Valiant Pre-Post as a managementpost dip and holding milker training schools through Oscar. We have everyone on the same page in the parlor, which is a challenge with the language barrier. We will be using Express as a pre and post dip through the summer months. In the colder months we use Express as a pre dip and Valiant Pre-Post as a post dip. We are pleased with the products, milker training and the service.”

EncoreEncore:“Encore Barrier keeps the teats in good shape – that’s the biggest plus. We don’t have to

‘grease’ teats in the winter anymore. Chapped teats were a problem during the winter when we used a 1% iodine. With Encore, teats are in better condition, our clinical rate slowed down, and we’ve culled fewer cows due to mastitis than at any time I can remember. In summer we use we’ve culled fewer cows due to mastitis than at any time I can remember. In summer we use we’ve culled fewer cows due to mastitis than at any time I can rememberExpress, but Encore Barrier is what we need for our 1,600 cows in open corrals during wet winter weather. The dips are automatically mixed - I don’t have to worry about any of it. Paul (ABS sales weather. The dips are automatically mixed - I don’t have to worry about any of it. Paul (ABS sales rep) takes care of everything. He provides tremendous service. He told me Express and Encore would be better than what we were using and it is better. When teat condition stays better and you don’t have as many bad (mastitis) cows, it’s got to be making you money.”

“We milk 500 cows three times a day and have used Valiant Pre and Encore Barrier about three years. Valiant Pre is such a good cleansing agent that we have eliminated the sprinkler pen. The main reason we decided to try Encore Barrier was because we wanted better skin condition than what we getting with an iodine dip. Encore’s emollients keep teats in very, very good condition. Since our milkers were doing a good job of pulling mastitis cows out early, we were already shipping good quality milk (herd average is 86 pounds and about 160,000 SCC; we share the milk quality bonus with our milkers), so the main difference we saw when we switched dips was a signifi cant drop in clinicals. It does a very good job lowering the incidence of new clinical mastitis cases and our clinical rate is now about 1.5%. The automatic mixing pump has been reliable and we have excellent service. Steve Bandy, our ABS Repre-sentative, is doing a wonderful job. We intend to continue using Valiant Pre and Encore Barrier.”We intend to continue using Valiant Pre and Encore Barrier.”We intend to continue using Valiant Pre and Encore Barrier

“We switched to the Encore dips because they were less expensive than what we were using and Tim (ABS sales rep) thought they would work just as well. So far, they’ve been working fantastic. We use Encore Barrier in the winter and it has kept teats softer. We have had no chapped teats and no skin cracking. During the summer we post dip with Encore Pre/Post. Since we teats and no skin cracking. During the summer we post dip with Encore Pre/Post. Since we teats and no skin crackingstarted with the Encore dips, the cell count usually has been in the 60,000 to 120,000 range. Even with extreme conditions in the corrals - our 1,650 cows are overcrowded – we’re now getting quality bonuses more often. Encore has done a terrifi c job.”
