utilizing the church for our meetings and socials. Once they have completed

construction of some storage closets in the fellowship hall, we will be able to

LOV NOTES

January 2016

Next Meeting: February 6, 2016 at 9:00am. Denny’s

Restaurant in Fletcher Hills

Hostesses: Jean Shogren & Linda Rawlinson

The Ladies of Valhall for many years have traditionally cel-

ebrated the beginning of the Christmas season with a lunch-

eon that we invited lodge members, relatives and friends to

share with us. Over the years the entertainment took on

many different themes. A few that come to my mind in-

cluded: members doll collections, Norwegian silver collec-

tions, history of Christmas songs, San Diego Mannskor and

Singing Sisters serenaded us, Geir from Lilia perfume

charmed us and more recently readings from Ibsen plays.

I proposed that our luncheon be held at a member’s private

home this year instead of a hotel. Anne Hoidal took on the

challenge and provided her home and a menu that one

might experience during a holiday visit to Norway. Due to

the number of guests Anne could comfortable seat at a sit

down affair, we decided to break with tradition and invite

only LOV members. Anne Charlotte Harvey entertained us

with a humorous 1910 telephone conversation between two

Minnesota Norwegian ladies. Anita Reith was surprised to

win a Norwegian hand carved figure after she found an

almond in her rice cream dessert.

During our first meeting in January, after a review of our

2015 activities, Anne Hoidal provided us with a presenta-

tion on the challenges of translating Norwegian literature.

Four poems were read, first in Norwegian by Anne and then

in English by Tam. The four selections were from Paul-

Helge Haugen’s 1979 Stone Fences.

Haugen is considered to be one of Norway’s foremost

poets. The collection of poems express his thoughts on

coming of age in postwar Norway. The English translation

was published by William Mishler & Rodger Greenwald

who won a prize for translation of poetry in 1986. Though

Haugen expresses experiences taking place in Norway,

those of us who came of age here in America could also

relate to the poems read: Home From America, The Radio

and When We Were Fourteen.

His opening poem, Stone Fences, gives one food for

thought about how the toil of removing stones on farms be-

came fences leaving history’s handwriting on the land.

Today mankind’s mark on earth will continue to leave its

handwriting on the land for future generations.

Dale Roybal, LOV President

Anne Hoidal and Tam Stauatland presented comparative

readings of Norwegian literary works, read in Norwegian

and then the English translation

Anne Charlotte Harvey entertained us with a humorous

skit at the LOV Christmas party., That’s not a banana,

it’s a phone!

help setting up the meeting in this

unexpected location.

ADJOURNMENT: The next lodge

social will be February 20, with loca-

tion TBD, the next lodge meeting date

and location TBD. The next board

meeting will be Wednesday, January

20, time and location TBD. Infor-

mation will be shared via email when

dates and location are finalized for

next year.

There were 30 members present and

the lodge meeting was adjourned at

7:35 PM.

Respectfully submitted by:

Secretary

Valhall Lodge #6-25

CALL TO ORDER: President Susan

Cody called the meeting to order at

6:38 PM. There were 11 board mem-

bers present: they are listed at the end

of the minutes.

The purpose of this meeting was to

discuss a scheduling issue regarding

lodge meeting times at the Ascension

Lutheran Church and to schedule the

actual move. At this point the con-

tract has not been finalized and there

are a few decisions to be made. Rick

Hausvik and Susan Cody will be

meeting with Pastor Karin this

Wednesday to finalize details of the

lease agreement. Lease has not been

signed yet, but the church really wants

the Sons of Norway to use their facili-

ty. It turns out that the first Monday

of the month is not always available

so an alternative would be to meet on

the second Monday of the month in-

stead.

For 2016 there will be 9 meetings on

Monday evenings like the old sched-

ule. They will be in February, March,

April, May, June, September, Octo-

ber, November and December. There

will be 6 socials, in February, March,

May, September, November and De-

cember.

We need to vacate the Mason Lodge

by January 10. We can rent a Pod and

pack our lodge belongings in it, then

the Pod company will move it to the

church where we can unload it. Rent-

al cost is $144.99/month. The cost to

move it is $69.99. Rick proposed

buying a resin shed that we can set up

on the church property. An 8' X 10'

shed costs $699. No decision was

needed at this time about the shed.

A plan was made to start the packing

on Friday, January 8 and continue

Saturday and Sunday. Aprell Bigler

will contact other members about

helping pack up our belongings. Peo-

ple can bring boxes, tape, dollies and

other moving supplies that they might

have. We have accumulated a lot of

stuff over the years and some items

will be donated to charity before the

move. We will not have as much

overall storage space at the new loca-

tion so this is a good opportunity to

go through things.

ADJOURNMENT: Susan thanked us

all for coming and the meeting ad-

journed at 7:14 PM.

The following board members were

present: Susan Cody, Rick Hausvik,

Janet Weber, Steve Rawlinson, Judy

Sawyer, Jean Shogren, Allen Johan-

nesen, Millie Wright, Sven Olsen,

Aprell Bigler and Else Ottesen.

Norway’s Green Ships

Norway aims to have world’s most environmentally

friendly ships. Norway relies on ships as the backbone

of its national and international trade. With a coastline of

15,500 miles (25,000 km), the country also depends on

ferries to shuttle people, vehicles and goods over rivers,

harbors and fjords.

Norway is increasingly looking to greener energy

sources, and over the past two decades has built up a sys-

tem of hydro, solar and wind sources to produce up to

90% of its electricity. Much like the car industry, the

shipping industry faces tough emission regulations. Sim-

ilarly, ship manufacturers are turning toward plug-in hy-

brid technology and ships that run on electricity.

In September 2015, the Green Coastal Shipping Program

was rolled out by the Norwegian government, in con-

junction with Oslo-based company DNV GL and 25 col-

laborators from the Norwegian maritime industry. The

program unveiled five projects in an effort to promote

efficient, green ships, with the goal of having the most

environmentally friendly ships in the world.

Program Director Narve Mjøs says “The pilot projects

include several different ship types, and infrastructure

with an emphasis on alternative fuel concepts. When we

launched the Green Coastal Shipping Program, we said

we wanted to make Norway a world showcase for green

coastal shipping. With these five pioneering pilot pro-

jects we are well on our way.

”The initiative proposes expansion of shore power infra-

structure to support electric-propelled vessels, and to ex-

plore other options such as battery- and LNG (liquid nat-

ural gas)-powered or plug-in hybrid ships. According to

DNV GL, 40 hybrid vessels are on order by Norwegian

shipping companies and an additional 40 plug-in hybrid

ships will be in use within a few years.

“We envision a fleet of offshore vessels, tankers, cargo,

container, bulk and passenger ships, ferries, fishing and

aquaculture vessels, tugs and other coastal vessels, run

entirely or partly using batteries, LNG or other green

fuels,” says Mjøs. “This can contribute to exports of

good, future-oriented and environmentally friendly solu-

tions.

” The first pilot project will be a CargoFerry Plug-in Hy-

brid, a hybrid LNG/battery-propelled container ship for

short ocean voyages. The next will be a battery-powered

coastal shuttle tanker. This will be the first vessel of its

kind to use battery technology. The third project is an

ocean vessel for fishing operations that aims to find a

more energy efficient hybrid system. The fourth project

will aim to convert a cargo carrier into a battery-LNG

hybrid carrier. This may be a more cost-effective option

for small operators.

Lastly, the program seeks to pioneer a green port facility

in Stavanger with a lower carbon footprint through use of

electric cranes and vehicles. Hybrid ships will have the

ability to charge at special dockside stations. Each of

these projects will undertake a cost/benefit analysis to

weigh the environmental benefits against the price tag of

the conversions and development. Article from SON
