February 1st 1pm -Monday, “A Walk In The Woods “(2015) R—144 minutes In this new comedy adventure, celebrated travel writer, Bill Bryson (Academy Award winner Robert Redford),
instead of retiring to enjoy his loving and beautiful wife (Academy Award winner Emma Thompson), and large and
happy family, challenges himself to hike the Appalachian Trail - 2,200 miles of America's most unspoiled,
spectacular and rugged countryside from Georgia to Maine. The peace and tranquility he hopes to find, though, is
anything but, once he agrees to being accompanied by the only person he can find willing to join him on the trek - his
long lost and former friend Katz (Academy Award nominee Nick Nolte), a down-on-his-luck serial philanderer who,
after a lifetime of relying on his charm and wits to keep one step ahead of the law – sees the trip as a way to sneak out of paying some debts
and sneak into one last adventure before its too late. The trouble is, the two have a completely different definition of the word, "adventure".
Now they're about to find out that when you push yourself to the edge, the real fun begins Stars: Robert Redford, Nick
Nolte, Emma Thompson

C OA Library C orner It is time for a book count at the COA Library !! If you have any books that you have finished reading, it would be really helpful if you could drop them off at the library ( COA) shortly. We appreciate your help in our “book counting” project.
One of our new donations is the newest book by Khaled Hosseini entitled “And the Mountains Echoed”. He is the author of “The Kite Runners” and “A Thousand Splendid Suns”. This is an emotional, provocative and unforgettable novel about how we love and take care of one another. This story takes place in an Afghan
village and involves two young children who need support from their family.
Find this on the “New Arrivals” shelf in the COA Library and enjoy !!

Dee Yeater, RN-Chatham Town Nurse NEW TREATMENT FOR PARKINSON’S DISEASE – Mayo Clinic Health Letter 12/15
Scientists have develop a new treatment for advanced Parkinson’s disease that may work better than current oral drug therapies and may be on par with – but less invasive than deep brain stimulation.
Currently, a combination of levodopa and carbidopa (Sinemet) is one of the most effective drugs available for treating symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Traditionally given orally as a tablet, this combination medication helps relieve resting tremor, muscle stiffness, and slowness of movement, making the disease much easier to manage. Levodopa crosses the blood brain barrier and is the active drug, while carbidopa prevents levodopa from breaking down before it reaches the blood brain barrier.
But there is a downside, People who’ve taken levodopa for a long time often experience “off” times --- periods when the drug does not work as well as it should due to variations in how the body responds to the drugs. To address this problem, scientists figured they could find a way to provide continuous delivery of the medication. They developed a gel (Duopa) that infused directly into the upper part of the small intestine. The gel, which is a combination of levodopa and carbidopa, is delivered through a tube inserted into a small hole in the abdomen. This tube is attached to a portable infusion pump.
The Food and Drug Administration has recently approved Duopa for Parkinson’s disease. Physicians are just beginning to familiarize themselves with the treatment but feel it is a major shift in the way Levodopa may be administered and shows great potential as an alternative to deep brain stimulation in many cases.
Dee Yeater RN Public Health Nurse.
SHINE NEWS… Can I change my Medicare Plan after Open Enrollment?
Even though Medicare’s Annual Open Enrollment ended on 12/7/2015 (that’s the period in
which you can change your Medicare Part D Drug Plan or Medicare Advantage Plan –
Part C) you may still have some options:
For those with Medicare Parts A and B (Original Medicare): You can add a Medicare Supplement (Medigap Plan) at
any time of the year in Massachusetts. If you already have a Massachusetts Medigap Plan, you can upgrade, downgrade or
end your coverage at any time during the year.
For those with a Medicare Advantage Plan (HMO or PPO): Between January 1st and February 14th, you can drop your
Medicare Advantage Plan, effectively switching back to Original Medicare. You cannot switch to another Medicare
Advantage Plan during this time. You will be able to join a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (Part D) to add drug coverage.
You may also add a Medicare Supplement (Medigap Plan) at this time.
For Prescription Advantage members or if you are getting “Extra Help” paying for prescription drugs: You can
change your prescription plan during the year outside of the Annual Open Enrollment.
Special Enrollment Periods: You might qualify for an exception that allows you to enroll in a Part C Medicare Advantage
Plan or a Part D Prescription Drug Plan during the year. Examples may include moving in or out of your plan’s service area,
ending employer insurance, becoming eligible for or losing MassHealth coverage.
Would you like to be a SHINE Counselor? If becoming a SHINE volunteer interests you, please call Sheila Curtis,
Regional SHINE Manager for Cape and the Islands, at 508-375-6762. The training will begin in April and consists of 12 full days- 2 days per week. You will learn all about Medicare, MassHealth and other public assistance programs. You will be required to pass a certification exam at the end of the training, attend monthly meetings and volunteer at least 4 hours per week.
How can SHINE help you? State certified SHINE counselors are trained regarding the enrollment rules that may apply to your personal situation and your personal coverage choices. We are happy to talk with you at any time of the year. We can analyze your needs and compare available plans to find you the most comprehensive coverage at the best price for you. We may also be able to save you money through public assistance programs. Call the senior center (508) 945-5190 to make an appointment with a SHINE counselor.

The Friends of the Chatham Council on Aging is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that exists for the sole purpose of supporting the
programming and the services of the Chatham COA. Since our inception in 1978, we have subsidized adult education classes, legal services,
caregiver support, health screenings/education, transportation, monthly birthday parties for Chatham residents 60+ and much more. Through
fundraising and volunteer support, the Friends supplements and fills the gaps in funding the COA receives from the Town of Chatham and
grantors.
