  • Outline

    We will discuss:

    • the importance of knowing individual students’ personal learning styles.

    • the meaning of the acronym ‘V.A.K’.

    • examples of teaching strategies that are suited to each learning style.

    • what kind of learner you are.

    • Explore activities/ resources that suit Multi-modal learning style.

  • What are Learning Styles and Why are they Important?

    • Learning styles are the way in which people learn.

    • Some people can just naturally pick up a skill or learn a piece of information but most people can’t.

    • We can put different learners into different categories based on the way they learn. Why would we want to do this?

    • These categories allow us, as teachers, to apply different strategies.

PresenterPresentation NotesLearning styles are the way in which people learn.

Some people can just naturally pick up a skill or learn a piece of information but most people can’t.

We can put people into categories based on the way they learn. Why would we want do do this? To help us to teach them things better and ensure they are getting the most from their learning experience.

These categories allow us, as teachers, to apply different strategies. These strategies make sure time is not wasted. All students will learn through any strategy eventually but by targeting them with the correct strategy, they learn new topics quicker and can therefore cover more subject areas.

  • What are the Main Learning Styles? There are four different learning styles. These are:

    • V.A.R.K is often shortened to V.A.K.

    • Can you think of some examples of the kinds of techniques you should use that help each type of learner to take on information?

    - Visual

PresenterPresentation NotesDiscuss the types of learning style, according to V.A.R.K.

Then explain that this is often referred to a just V.A.K.

Ask students to come up with techniques that are suited to visual learners. Answers are on the next slides.

  • What Kind of Learner are you?You can visit the following website and find out what kind of learner you are:

    http://vark-learn.com/the-vark-questionnaire/teaching-questionnaire/

    • Was this what you expected?

    • What kind of learner do you think you are?

PresenterPresentation NotesThose who are multimodal in their preferences can be more flexible about how they take in and give out information than those with a VARK profile that emphasizes a single preference. They tend to be able to match their preferences with whatever mode(s) are being used.

  • What kind of learner do you think you are?

PresenterPresentation NotesDepending on your scores; you could have a multimodal learning preference such as VK or VAKThose who are multimodal in their preferences can be more flexible about how they take in and give out information than those with a VARK profile that emphasizes a single preference. They tend to be able to match their preferences with whatever mode(s) are being used.

  • V.A.K Suggested Resources / Activities

PresenterPresentation NotesThose students who tend to have more than one learning preference; they are called bi-modal and those who have 3 learning preferences are called multi-modal learners.Of course, if those learners will be given the information in both ways, they will learnt better.

    Teaching Techniques

    PresenterPresentation NotesLet’s try it

  • Running-Dictation Activity• Set-up: Prepare a short text that incorporates the

target grammar or vocabulary. • Print copies to be placed around the classroom

throughout the activity.• Students can work in pairs or threes. One is the

designated writer and the other is the runner (they can only read and speak)

    • Action: One runner from each group “runs” to the text and memories as much as possible, returns to the writer and reports what was read. This continues until the text is complete.

    • Review: Pass out copies of the text so students can check their work

  • Tic-Tac-Toe

    • Set-up: Prepare flashcards for taught vocabulary or question cards.

    • Divide the class into 2 teams (X and O). • Action: A student from the 1st team will choose a

flashcard and act out the word and his team should guess it. If the answer is correct, they will place an X; if wrong the 2nd team will answer and place an O.

    • This continues a team has 3 in row.

PresenterPresentation NotesThe object of Tic Tac Toe is to get three in a row. You play on a three by three game board. The first player is known as X and the second is O. Players alternate placing Xs and Os on the game board until either opponent has three in a row or all nine squares are filled.

  • Finger-Wrap Activity

PresenterPresentation NotesFinger-Wrap Activity. To be played in groups of 5Each person can only use one finger and his/her other four fingers should be taped. The five people will represent the fingers of one hand. The group wraps the gift.
