MID SERIES VACUUM PUMPS–60, 90, 100, 150WITH INTERCHANGEABLE NOZZLE DIFFUSERSFor maximum application versatility, the Mid Series utilizes modular components to allow the designer to specify only thosefeatures necessary for their specific application. Flexibility is further increased through the use of Vaccon’s interchangeablecartridge venturies. Anyone of the eight cartridges can be used with any of the three standard body styles.
Select the venturi that best fits your application based on the four performance characteristics: vacuum level, vacuum flow, evacuation speed, and air consumption (see facing page). To simplify selection, venturi performance has been separatedinto two categories, “M” for medium and “H” for high vacuum applications.

Venturi vacuum pump with silencer
Compact design–locate close to vacuum point
Venturi vacuum pump with silencer
Optional vacuum sensor (adjustable) pro-vides electrical signal
Optional vacuum gauge provides visual moni-toring, helpful when setting vacuum sensorand troubleshooting
Venturi vacuum pump with integral 6 way solenoidvalve and silencer as standard. Provides precise, rapid vacuum generation and decay.
Integral 6 way valve has dual functions with onlyone electrical connection:
1. Energizes venturi rapidly for high cycle rates–noloss due to plumbing lines.
2. A positive vacuum blow-off is created automati-cally when the valve is de-energized. This allowsthe charged air reservoir within the pump to vent-through the vacuum port for rapid part removal.
Blow-off prevents vacuum line clogging
Eliminates plumbing between components forfaster installation
Optional air reservoir (P/N QRV-10) can be addedfor even faster vacuum release.

J SERIES VACUUM PUMPS
VACCON’s J Series of air powered vacuum pumps areavailable in 16 standard models with a full range of optionalaccessories for pick and place and other similar applica-tions where reliable vacuum and high performance arerequired. J Series pumps operate with instantaneousresponse in pulsed applications or on a continuous basis.
The rugged, cylindrical design of the J series makes it idealfor use in adverse operating conditions. These mainte-nance free pumps have no moving parts or seals thatrequire replacement. The pump’s light weight, compact con-figuration facilitates installation close to the work area givingthe added advantage of increased response time andreducing the need for using a larger pump.
J Series pumps are manufactured from anodized alu-minum. For high temperature and/or caustic applications, stainless steel, PVC, and other materials are available.
A transducer produces a vacuum by forcing compressed airthrough a limiting orifice into a venturi section. As the airexits the orifice it expands, increasing in velocity to super-sonic speeds before entering the venturi section. This cre-ates a vacuum or negative pressure at the vacuum inletport located between the orifice and venturi section. Thishigh velocity insures efficient and effective operation.
ORDERING INFORMATIONSelect a J Series pump with the lowest air consumption thatmeets the application requirements based on the followingcriteria: Vacuum Level, Vacuum Flow, Vacuum Force, and Cycle Times.

VDF SERIESVARIABLE FLOW VACUUM PUMPS
The VDF Series of adjustable air powered vacuum pumpsprovides a combination of high vacuum flow rates of up to120 SCFM, and vacuum levels of up to 25" Hg. Because ofits straight-through design, the VDF Series is ideal forhandling porous materials and operation in contaminatedsituations.
We have named this unit the “Dirty One” because of itsability to pass virtually all contaminants through its internalstructure. VDF pumps can be used to pick and placeconcrete block, or packaging materials that are coated withfine powder, and are commonly used in industrial air drivenvacuum cleaners to remove liquid/solid mixtures from sumpareas.
VDF pumps are field adjustable and eliminate the need foradditional regulation of air lines to remotely vary the levelsof vacuum or flow that is required.
PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION
The variable performance of the VDF pump is achieved byincreasing the annular gap between the venturi nozzle andthe diffuser. Rotating the diffuser section counter-clockwisewill increase the opening, allowing more compressed air toflow through the unit and increasing both the vacuum flowand the vacuum level. The result is a variable vacuumpump that can be adjusted to meet an application’s exactrequirements.
FEATURES
Ideal for dirty environments
Non-clogging, straight-through design
High performance to air consumption ratio
Field adjustable for your specific application

CDF SERIES VACUUM PUMPSFOR AIR AMPLIFICATION
The CDF Series of air amplifiers generates both a highvacuum flow and a high exhaust flow using only a smallamount of compressed air. The CDF can be used for appli-cations requiring high levels of vacuum flow to rapidly evac-uate large areas. They can also be used where porosity is amajor problem and a standard Vaccon unit does not gener-ate enough flow to offset the loss of vacuum.
The unique design of the CDF pump makes it an efficientand cost effective alternative to electric blowers or largevolumes of raw compressed air.
Seven standard models are available with bores of 1/8" to2". Air velocity and flow of all models are field adjustable toprovide a wide range of conditions to meet individualapplication requirements.
Amplification ratios as high as 40:1 (output to input) can beachieved with the CDF series.
PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION
CDF pumps operate on the “Coanda Effect” where a smallvolume of compressed air is converted into a large flow ofambient air. Compressed air is emitted from an annular gapand passes over a curved surface into the throat of the unit.As the air passes over this curved surface, similar to an airfoil, a low pressure area is created inducing ambient air toflow into the throat with the compressed air.

PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION
Compressed air is fed into an exterior annular ring that hasa number of orifices leading into the main tube of a trans-ducer. As the compressed air exits from the orifices, itsvelocity increases to supersonic speed. The air forced intothe center of the tube rotates with a twisting motion similarto a worm screw. This cyclonic flow creates a powerfulvacuum capable of drawing materials into, and through thetransducer.
As a vacuum source, the DF series are capable of rapidevacuation of a large volume of air to a low vacuum level.

Silicon.......................................... High temp., FDA approved, up to 400°F (-76°F)
Polyurethane............................... Chemically resistant up to 125°F
4 BASIC CUP STYLES
STANDARD
Standard cups are flexible and work well in applications that do not requirelifting heavy loads. In food packaging for example, a standard cup can beused to apply a label to an uneven surface such as a package of chicken.
CLEATED
Cleated cups are strong with a rigid, low profile that will lift heavy loads. Thelow profile allows heavy loads to be lifted vertically without the cup “peeling”away from the product surface. These cups perform well when grippingsmooth, flat heavy objects such as steel sheet, glass (television picturetubes), and coated corrugated.
BELLOWS – with 1, 2, 3 or 4 convolutions
Bellows cups have a pliable outer rim that will conform to curved or unevensurfaces while the bellows sections compensate for inconsistent stackheights. Under vacuum, the accordion-style bellows cup will collapse oncontact. The collapsing action simulates a short cylinder stroke lifting theproduct for a short distance, possibly saving the need for a separate liftingmechanism.
OVAL
Like cleated cups, oval cups have heavy load handling capacity due to theirrigid design and large vacuum work area. Oval cups have the largest liftingforce because they provide the most surface area for a given cup footprint.
CUP STYLES
Equation for calculating vacuumlifting force using vacuum cups:Note: To covert ("Hg) vacuum level intoPSI divide by 2.
Vacuum Force (lbs.) x Safety Factor =Vacuum Level (PSI) x Surface Area (in.2)
Suggested Safety Factor:2 for cup in horizontal position. 4 for cup in vertical position

VACCON SILENCERS
Vaccon silencers are extremely effective in reducing air exhaust noise from venturi pumps and other pneumatic devices. The AA, ST, and FA51 Series reduce noise levels by up to 30 dB while allowing high flow rates with minimal back pressure.
Compact, lightweight, these silencers haveexcellent noise reducing characteristics withminimal resistance to air flow. AA Seriessilencers are almost one third smaller thancomparable products providing considerablespace savings. The large surface of the felt ele-ment resists contamination far more than othermaterials such as sintered bronze, steel mesh,or porous polyethylene.
The FA51 Series silencers offer remarkablenoise reduction for high volume exhaust appli-cations without causing back pressure.Silencers are ideal for quieting large air valvesthat must exhaust quickly to maintain highcycle rates. Vaccon uses the FA51 silencers ontheir high flow venturi vacuum pumps whereeven small amount of back pressure woulddecrease performance.
A threaded connection provides easy installa-tion for replacement element, P/N RF51
The ST-Series’ straight-through design elimi-nates clogging by allowing contaminants topass directly through the silencer. Eachsilencer is tuned in proportion to its exhaustflow to minimize noise and reduce frequency. As air passes through the silencer, noise isabsorbed by the dense felt liner. This reduceshigh pitch exhaust noise to a gentle, lowfrequency flow of air.
Even in the most adverse conditions, contami-nants pass through the silencer making the ST- Series ideal for silencing venturi pumpsthat are continuously ingesting dirt and debris.

WHERE:F is the weight of the object in pounds
(lbs) multiplied by a safety factor(See page 12)
P is the expected vacuum level in PSI,remember to convert “Hg” to PSI bydividing by 2
A is the area of the vacuum cup in sq.inches. Use the equation, Area = πd2

GUIDE TO VACUUM PUMP SELECTION
There are two types of vacuum applications
PICK AND PLACE – MATERIAL HANDLING
Referred to here as the lifting, gripping, rotating and positioning of an object throughthe use of a vacuum pump and vacuum cup
Use the Equation: Force = Pressure x Area
to Determine:
1. Lifting capacity of the pump and cup,
2. Required vacuum area, i.e. diameter of cup,
3. Required vacuum level of vacuum pump.
2 Vacuum Level Ranges - “H” for High Vacuum and “M” for Medium Vacuum.
“H” - Series (28'' Hg) for non-porous material togenerate maximum holding force.
Hint: Try P = 12.5 PSI (25" Hg) as a starting valuewhen using equation, F = P x A.
Systems Speed:Cycle rate of the pump and cup system is determined by the evacuation speed of the venturi, see “Vessel Evacuation” below.
“M” - Series (20'' Hg) for porous material togenerate medium holding force while overcomingleakage and saving compressed air.
Hint: Try P = 8 PSI (16" Hg) as a starting valueusing equation, F = P x A.
INEXACT SCIENCE
When handling porous materials such as corrugatedor heavy fabric it is hard to choose the exact pumprequired because the leakage rate is not normallyknown. Therefore, it is best to run a benchtop trial totest the ability of the pump to overcome the leakage. For existing systems, consult Vaccon for the equiva-lent pump size. In new applications, take advantage ofVaccon’s free 30 day trial to ensure proper pumpselection.
Increase safety, reliability and speed by using onesmall Fastvac pump at each cup location. Should onecup fail the others will not be affected.
VESSEL EVACUATION
In many process applications it is necessary to evacuate avessel for the purpose of purging gases, leak testing, degassing viscous fluids or the vessel may simply be thelength of tubing between the pump and cup. Knowing theevacuation speed will help determine process completiontime or the production rate of a pick and place system.
Evacuation speed is directly related to the vacuum flow ofthe pump. To use the chart of evacuation speed listed foreach venturi identify operating conditions;
Notice that the charts are based on a one cubic foot vol-ume. Evacuation speed is linear with volume, therefore a 2cu. ft. volume will take twice as long to evacuate.
1. Volume to be evacuated (Cu. Ft.), 1728 cu, in. = 1 cu. ft.
2. Desired vacuum level (“Hg),
3. Time to reach vacuum level (seconds).

GLOSSARY OF VACUUM TERMS AND DEFINITIONS
AIR CONSUMPTION: The volume of compressed air required to power the pump. Also measured in SCFM. Consumptionvaries directly with input pressure. A 1hp compressor can supply approximately 4SCFM @ 80PSI.
ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE: The atmosphere that surrounds the earth can be considered a reservoir of low pressure air. It's weight exerts a pressure that varies with temperature, humidity, and altitude. Atmospheric pressure at sea level: 29.92"Hg or 760 mm Hg.
BAROMETER: Device, usually mercury filled, that measures the atmospheric pressure.
"HG (INCHES OF MERCURY): A unit used to measure vacuum level. 29.92" Hg =14.7 psi is the maximum vacuum possibleon a standard day. 1"Hg =13.6"H2O.
SCFM (STANDARD CUBIC FEET PER MINUTE): Air at sea level 59°F 50% humidity.
VENTURI'S / EJECTORS: Same as air-powered vacuum pump, just a different name.
VACUUM FLOW: The volume of free air induced by the vacuum pump per unit of time (standard cu. ft/minute).
VACUUM LEVEL: The magnitude of the suction created by the vacuum pump. The unit of measure is mm Hg. Vacuum levelis effected by elevation and barometric pressure. For each 1,000 feet of elevation, vacuum decreases by approximately1" Hg.
VACUUM FORCE: Equal to the vacuum level times the area of the vacuum surface, i.e. holding area of a vacuum cup.
