GNB is a company of technical experts serving other technology experts. Since our

beginning in 1968 it has been our commitment to technology that has set us apart.

During this time we have produced outstanding, innovative products that have met the

most demanding applications in areas such as temperature extremes, large sizes,

radiation levels, vacuum levels, vibration levels, and unique applications.

However GNB is more than just technology, we are passionate about building winning

relationships. It is our corporate vision that customers will be so impressed that they say,

“Wow! We want to do business with GNB again.”

Other vacuum product companies produce large catalogs and encourage customers to

design their systems around the standardized products. However, with GNB you can

have it your way. You can select a standard item or we will custom make one just the

way you want it. Consequently, GNB is no ordinary vacuum products company. This

brochure depicts a sampling of our most popular products, but it should be treated as an

idea book—not an exhaustive product catalog. No matter what your application is,

please give us a call; and we will gladly share our technical expertise.

Primary Uses of Valves

Vacuum gate valves are used to seal against the forces that are caused by atmospheric

pressure. Some can also be used to hold small amounts of over-pressure such as an

inert atmosphere for processing or quenching. Some of the common applications are

door valves, pump isolation valves, process isolation valves, throttling valves and

roughing/venting valves.

Door valves are used in place of a lid or a door into a vacuum system. Only one side is

attached to the vacuum chamber and the other side is open to the atmosphere, thus the

sealing force can only be in one direction. They are used as an access point or to

introduce or remove products into the vacuum chamber.

Pump isolation valves are normally used to isolate the vacuum pumps from the

process. Some pumps can only run at lower vacuum levels and others can only be run

at higher vacuum levels. These valves will seal the pump from the process, so they can

stay within their operating pressure range. Cryopumps need to undergo a process

called regeneration. This must be performed periodically in order for the pumping

surfaces to be cleaned of the buildup of frozen gas molecules. To perform this process,

the pump must be sealed from the rest of the vacuum system. Pump isolation valves

are sometimes called basement valves because they are a part of the facilities that

accompany a vacuum system. Most pump isolation valves must be able to seal with the

differential pressure in either direction. The chamber can be held under vacuum while

the pump is vented, or the pump can be held under vacuum while the chamber is

vented. Pump isolation valves can also be used to isolate many other types of

equipment such as temperature probes and residual gas analyzers—any item that is

sometimes part of the process and sometimes removed from the process can be

isolated by these valves.

Process isolation valves are used for in-line processes where more than one vacuum

chamber is connected. These valves seal between parts of the vacuum system and

isolate one section from another. For example, a loadlock chamber is used to introduce

parts into a vacuum system. While the main vacuum chamber is under vacuum, the

loadlock chamber is at atmospheric pressure. After the parts are loaded into the

loadlock chamber, it is pumped down to be at a pressure that is near the main chamber.

Then the isolation valve between the loadlock and the main chamber is opened, so the

parts can be moved into the main chamber. The reverse of this process is used to

remove parts from the process without venting the main chamber.

Throttling valves are valves that can stop in a position other than fully open and fully

closed. Some have a set number of predetermined positions and others are full

throttling valves where the valve gate can stop in an infinite number of positions. The

most common use for a throttling valve is to vary the pumping speed so that a set

pressure or special atmosphere can be maintained within the vacuum chamber.

The GNB Sealing Mechanism

Most gate valves that GNB manufactures use a cam-over sealing mechanism. The

gate (sealing plate) in the valve moves back and forth in the valve body from the open

position to the closed position. Wheels on the gate keep it away from the body until the

gate is ready to seal. When the gate reaches the end of its stroke and is ready to seal,

there is an extra space which will allow the gate wheels to move toward the sealing

surface. At the same time, a second set of rollers on the gate contact a stop which will

only allow the gate to move toward the seal.

The gate is connected to another part called a carriage by a series of links. The

carriage has side rollers that guide its movement in the valve body. It also has reaction

rollers that press against the opposite side of the valve body to provide the force to seal

the gate.

Roughing valves are made to open and close while there is full differential pressure

across them. They can be used to vent a chamber or to equalize the pressure between

two chambers. They are called roughing valves because they are often used in the

rough vacuum lines in a pumping system.

Gate Valves

GNB’s gate valves are designed to be highly

reliable in harsh environments. Some of

the unique features of the GNB valves are:

· The valves can open with adifferential pressure across the gate of 1 Torr (1.3 mbar)

· No internal lubricants

· Low maintenance

· No internal springs

· Simple adjustment of the

gate O-ring compression

6

When the movement of the gate is stopped at the travel limit, the carriage continues to

move because the actuator is attached to the carriage. The links between the carriage

and the gate now rotate until they are perpendicular with the gate. This creates a

powerful sealing force directly from one side of the valve body to the other.

All movements are controlled mechanically and there are no springs to retract the gate during

opening. This is one of the most effective and reliable gate sealing mechanisms that has

been designed. There are no lubricated parts such as balls that need to roll up a ramp.

Specifications that are common to all of GNB’s gate valves are:

Direct Linear Gate Valves

GNB manufactures a full range of direct linear gate valves where there is no motion

multiplier between the pneumatic cylinder and the carriage. These have a larger foot

print than the Space Saver valves, but have fewer moving parts. They offer outstanding

performance for industrial applications and operate well in contaminated environments.

Common sizes are ISO 100 to ISO 1320 and ASA 4 inches to ASA 52 inches. These

can easily be customized with many options including additional ports, water cooling,

protective metal guardrings (PMG) and bodies that are split in the middle.

Specifications for the direct linear valves, including PMG valves, are as follows:

Direct Linear Valve Standard Features Options

Sealing Differential 1.5 atm in Either Direction -

Slit Valves

Slit valves are often used as door valves or as process isolation valves.

Sometimes they are called a transfer valve because they can be used to seal

between two vacuum chambers and then open to have product transferred from

one chamber to the next. In-line systems and cluster systems typically use

rectangular (slit) valves. The most common material for these valves is aluminum;

however, stainless steel and mild steel can also be used.

Angle Valves

Angle valves are also called poppet valves. Generally they are less expensive than

gate valves, but because the flow path must turn a corner, they have lower conductance

than gate valves. They have few moving parts and are well suited for dirty and

contaminated environments. Smaller sizes (below 20 inches in diameter) can be

designed to open and close against full differential pressure. This makes them ideal for

the roughing lines in vacuum system.

Because angle valves are simple and direct, they can open and close quickly—

sometimes in a fraction of a second. For this reason they are often used when rapid

opening and closing is desirable.

Some angle valves are used in conjunction with diffusion pumps. Because a diffusion

pump must be oriented so that its oil flows to the bottom with gravity, these valves are

the ideal shape for mounting diffusion pumps.

CryoProducts

Cryo Products Family

The product families are: Baffles, Liquid Nitrogen Traps, and Cryo-coils

Primary Uses of Cryo Products

There are 4 primary uses of baffles and other cryo products:

1. Trapping contaminants. As oil, water, selenium, and other contaminants travel in avacuum system, they will stick to cold surfaces. Cooled baffles provide cold surfacesthat can trap the contaminants, thus protecting the process or components fromcontamination.

2. Heat shields. Processes may be hot, yet many vacuum components do not toleratehigh temperatures. A baffle will protect cryo-pumps and other components from heatby absorbing the heat load.

3. Diffusing gasses. A diffuser controls the movement of gasses in a vacuum systemduring pump-down or venting by changing the speed and direction of moving gasses.

4. Moisture Removal. Baffles can be used to increase pumping speeds by removingthe moisture (humidity) from the air in the chamber. As cryo-coils and bafflescondense the water vapor out of the air, they remove the water vapor load from thepumps and increase pumping speed.

Conductance

Because a baffle adds restriction between the pump and the vacuum chamber, it may reduce the ability of the pumping system. This reduction in conductance depends on a large number of factors such as the pressure in the vacuum system (molecular vs. laminar flow), the type of gas and the temperature of the baffle.

In the high vacuum range, an optically dense chevron style baffle that is placed between a chamber and a vacuum pump will reduce the pumping speed by roughly 50%. However, if its surface temperature is cold, it will also increase the pumping speed of the system because it will pull water vapor out of the system. The interacting factors make it difficult to calculate the overall pumping speed. For example, testing that was completed on an actual production system showed that removing a diffusion pump cold head and replacing it with GNB's chevron style baffle only reduced the pumping speed by 13% while decreasing oil backstreaming by 94%.

Instructions for Using Baffles

1. A baffle must always have an unrestricted exit line. If the exit is blocked and thebaffle is allowed to warm, the expansion of the liquid and/or gas inside can causedangerous pressures to develop.

2. A baffle should not be positioned above a turbo pump or other equipment thatcannot tolerate water. When a baffle warms, moisture may drip from it.

3. A baffle or trap should not be used for applications that generate large amounts of vapors that will condense at the temperature of the baffle. When this is the

case, the baffle will "ice" quickly and become ineffective. 4 A baffle should not be used if the conductance of the pumps is marginal. A baffle

that is placed in front of a pump may reduce the pumping speed. 5 Baffles and cryo-coils should be used with caution whenever they are exposed to

a hot process. Although the initial pump-down time can be shortened, the hot process may free the trapped moisture and increase the gas load while the process is hot. You may consider hiding the baffle behind a heat shield or valve while the process is hot.

Multi-coolant Baffles

GNB’s baffles are also called multi-coolant baffles because they can be chilled by a variety of liquids. While they are often used in conjunction with a chiller, they can be used with cool water, liquid nitrogen and other liquids. Their most common use is to trap contaminates in a vacuum system. One such contaminant is oil from a diffusion pump. In the high vacuum range, molecules of diffusion pump oil can wander from the pump and contaminate the vacuum process. With GNB’s 5-bounce design, these oil molecules are trapped and then drip harmlessly back into the pump. The specifications for GNB’s baffles are as follows:

Specification Standard Features Options

Leak Rate <1x10-9 std cc/sec He -

Vacuum Rating 1x10-8 Torr (1.3x10-8 mbar) -

Body Material 304 Stainless Steel -

Chevron Material Copper Aluminum, Stainless

Surface Finish Bead Blasted -

Liquid Nitrogen Traps

Liquid Nitrogen Traps (LNTs) are similar to baffles; however, they also have a built-in reservoir to hold liquid nitrogen. For this reason, they must be designed and used for a specific orientation with respect to gravity. The reservoir provides a supply of LN2 that can last up to 12 hours. They must be periodically refilled. Equipment and accessories are available for automatic refilling if desired. The specifications for LNTs are:

Cryo Products FamilyCryo-coils

Cryo-coils are used to rapidly reduce the pressure inside a vacuum system. They use the same principle as a cryo-pump: they create a vacuum by freezing the water and other molecules. Another name for a cryo-coil is Meissner coil. Cryo-coils provide one of the fastest vacuum pumping methods because just as fast as a surface inside a vacuum chamber can be made cold, the vacuum pressure can be reduced.

Water vapor is 65% to 95% of the gas load in most vacuum systems. A cryo- coil freezes the water vapor and can reduce the pump-down time by 25% to 75%. The following chart shows the water vapor partial pressure according to temperature. The colder the cryo- coil the lower the expected vacuum pressure.

Vacuum Chamber

The product families are: UHV Chambers, HV Chambers, Rough Vacuum Chambers

and Pressure Vessels.

Introduction to Chambers

A chamber creates an enclosed space for a controlled environment. Inside the

chamber the pressure can be low or high. If the pressure is lower than the atmospheric

pressure it is called a vacuum chamber, and if it is higher than atmospheric pressure it

is a pressure vessel.

The key challenge is to create a design that will withstand the forces created by these

pressure differences. A spherical shape is the best to manage these forces, but often it

is not a practical shape to contain an object or a process. Consequently, cylindrical, D-

shaped, and rectangular shapes are commonly used.

Vacuum chambers have a special requirement of creating an environment with a

smaller number of air molecules. Some molecules are in the chamber before the

pumping process begins, others find their way into the chamber (permeation) through

the materials that are used to construct the chamber. To reach a higher vacuum level

(lower absolute pressure), special considerations must be taken to ensure the vacuum

chamber has a low gas load. The higher the vacuum, the more stringent the

requirements are in order to keep the number of free gas molecules low.

Although there are no absolute technical definitions for the different vacuum ranges, the

gas flow properties change as the vacuum level increases. In common practice, the

rough vacuum range is between 7.5 Torr (10 mbar) to 7.5x10-4 Torr (1x10-3 mbar), the

high vacuum ranges is 7.5x10-4 Torr (1x10-3 mbar) to 7.5x10-9 Torr (1x10-8 mbar), and

the ultra-high vacuum range is a pressure less than 7.5x10-9 Torr (1x10-8 mbar).

Primary Uses of Chambers

Chambers have a wide range of uses. Some of the common ones are: packaging and

food processing, freeze drying, sterilization, semiconductor manufacturing, vapor

deposition coatings, refractory metal processing, heat treatment processing, crystal

growing, autoclaves, space simulation and bulk storage for gasses. The common

feature in all of these processes is the need to have a controlled environment where air

is not allowed in and the gas (if any) inside the chamber is not allowed out.

The design and materials of a chamber are determined by its pressure rating. For this

reason we categorize chambers into UHV Chambers, HV Chambers, Rough Vacuum

Chambers and Pressure Vessels.

UHV Chambers

To achieve an ultra-high vacuum level, the chamber should not have O-ring or

elastomer seals. Only metal seals can be used. The chamber should have special

surface preparations (mechanically polished or electropolished) and it must be made

from only UHV rated materials such as aluminum or stainless steel.

UHV Chambers must be made from materials that have low outgassing rates. Most

materials have gas molecules or volatile compounds at or below their surfaces. The

ability of these molecules to leave the surface and become a free gas molecule inside

the vacuum chamber is called the outgassing rate. Adsorption is the ability of a gas,

liquid or dissolved solid to adhere to the surface of the chamber. When the pressure

inside the chamber is decreased, these molecules can leave the surface (desorption)

and contribute to the gas load. Water and hydrocarbon molecules can evaporate and

add to the gas load. For these reasons, the vacuum chamber must have a surface

preparation that limits the number of molecules that will leave, and it must be cleaned to

remove contaminants.

A bakeout is the process that heats the chamber walls to intentionally energize the

molecules at the surface of the chamber to allow them to break free. This will make it

easier to evacuate the chamber to an ultra-high vacuum level. Sometimes a Residual

Gas Analyzer (RGA) is used in the chamber to determine the composition of the

remaining gas molecules. For example, an RGA could be used to show that the

chamber has a minimal amount of hydrocarbons—indicating the chamber is clean and

ready for use in UHV processes. The following specifications are relevant to UHV

chambers.

HV Chambers

There is a wide range of possibilities for vacuum chambers between the absolute

pressure range of 7.5x10-4 Torr (1x10-3 mbar) to 7.5x10-9 Torr (1x10-8 mbar). At higher

pressures, many materials can be used including mild steel, stainless steel, Teflon®,

PEEK, polycarbonate, and aluminum. At lower pressures, (higher vacuum) the choice

of materials is limited until only those that are UHV compatible may be used. The

same is true of seals. At higher pressures, silicone, Viton® A (FKM), Buna,

polyurethane, and other elastomers may be used. At lower pressures, fewer materials

can be used, and for elastomers to be used there should be dual O-rings with a

vacuum pumping port between them. The specifications for HV chambers are as

follows.

common because it has the required structural rigidity, and it is less expensive than

many other materials. The specifications for a rough vacuum chamber are as follows.

Pressure Vessels

GNB has an ASME pressure vessel certification (U-stamp), and is qualified to

manufacture pressure vessels. Any vessel that is subjected to a differential pressure

greater than 15 psi and is 6 inches or larger in diameter should be designed and

manufactured in accordance with the ASME section VIII code.*

For safety, some customers choose to have vacuum chambers built in accordance with

the ASME code even though the pressure differential is only 15 psi. Other vacuum

chambers have a dual purpose such as a vacuum heat treatment furnace. For example,

these chambers can be evacuated with a vacuum pump and then backfilled with an

inert gas at a positive pressure during the heat treatment process.

Pressure vessels are used in numerous applications apart from the vacuum industry:

diving cylinders, water pressure tanks, distillation towers, autoclaves, pneumatic storage

tanks, hydraulic accumulators, and bulk storage tanks for compressed gasses are a few

examples. The specifications for GNB’s pressure vessels are as follows:
