Chart’s vacuum insulated pipe systems are custom engineered to meet yourapplication’s specifications. Chart’s complete system solution package ensuresquality liquid to keep your processes operating at their peak efficiency. Builtfor long-term integrity and industry-leading efficiency, these systems give youthe highest performance at the lowest operating cost.

1 Liquefied gases are stored at ultra-coldtemperatures in a vacuum insulated tank.Controls on the tank keep the pressure ofthe liquid at optimum levels to assure properliquid delivery to the application.

2 Vacuum insulated pipe connects the tank’sliquid withdrawal to the applicationequipment. The pipe is the foundation forthe system’s heat-loss efficiency and long-term integrity. It must be engineered to workwith the associated controls and accessories.

3 Chart manufactures equipment thatcontrols and provides gas to otherapplications within the facility. Ourengineers can help provide proper sizingfor vaporizers, control manifolds, etc. toserve both a liquid and gas applicationfrom a single bulk tank liquid source.

4 The application equipment is designed to utilize liquid at specific properties. The system design must take carefulconsideration of the application andequipment requirements andspecifications.

VIP to Meet the Needs of Any Application

Biological Storage and ResearchAn efficient supply of high-quality liquid nitrogen is needed to keep valuablebiological samples stored indefinitely. Today’s top medical research facilitiesdepend on a reliable liquid nitrogen supply to find cures for tomorrow’sdiseases. Any interruption in supply can result in the loss of many years of research. Chart’s experience in the biological container market makes us the first choice in vacuum insulated pipe systems for these applications.

Molecular Beam EpitaxyMBE is a method of laying down layers of materials with atomic thicknesses ona substrate (epitaxial growth). This is done by creating a “molecular beam” ofa material which impinges on the substrate in a high-quality vacuum. Acryogenic screening around the substrate minimizes fluxes of atoms from thewalls of the chamber. During this process, it is imperative that the supply ofliquid nitrogen be uninterrupted and of good quality (the right pressure andtemperature) to prevent contamination of the substrate or interruption of the process.

Food and Beverage PackagingUsing nitrogen to create positive pressure for a rigid container and displaceoxygen for a longer shelf-life requires a consistent flow of quality liquidnitrogen to the injector. With Chart’s engineered system solutions from the bulktank to the injector, you get a reliable supply of liquid nitrogen that keeps yourequipment operating at peak efficiency for maximum productivity.

Vacuum Insulated Pipe

AerospaceChart’s vacuum insulated pipe is used on launch pads delivering extremely highflow rates of liquid hydrogen and oxygen to fuel today’s demanding spaceprograms. Aerospace applications are extremely precise, requiring largerdiameters, higher pressures and intense analysis of engineering stress and heatleak. Additionally, Chart is able to meet the precision clean requirementscommon to these applications.

Food FreezingTotal system cost and efficiency is crucial in food freezing applications. Chart’ssuperior insulation technology delivers liquid nitrogen with more coolingcapacity, using less nitrogen per pound of frozen product. With our experienceand capabilities in providing complete pipe system solutions, we help maintainthe lowest total cost of ownership with the most efficient system.

Electronic Manufacturing and TestingSilicone manufacturing and cleaning applications require extremely tighttolerances on the control of liquid nitrogen flow. It is critical that the vacuuminsulated pipe system deliver the proper amount of liquid at the propertemperature to maximize wafer yield. For electronic component testing, Chartworks with today’s leading equipment manufacturers to design and manufacturepipe systems that supply the flows demanded by today’s thermal stressenvironmental test chambers. As the leading manufacturer of LN2 cooledchambers, Chart gets your pipe system right the first time.

External bellows are a good choice for our customers who need higher pressure ratings orreduced pressure drop, as the flexible bellows material is moved to the outer jacket. Thisproduct is qualified in all respects to ASME Code, Section B31.3, chemical plant andpetroleum refining piping for 150 psi. The material is very corrosion resistant. Bayonet orfield weld connections.

Our most common solution for many industrial applications. Internal bellows eliminatecontraction of the outer pipe and give it a clean look. This industrial/commercial gradeproduct is built to the same rigid requirements as ASME piping. The material is verycorrosion resistant. Bayonet or field weld connections.

The solution for helium piping starts with 2 1/2 times more insulation for super-low heatleak. Field joints are also 67% more efficient than standard piping. Chart’s helium lines arequalified in all respects to ASME Code, Section B31.3, chemical plant and petroleum refiningpiping for 150 psi.

The ultimate solution for the most demanding applications. Special Invar material is usedfor the inner pipe, eliminating the need for flexible bellows. Chart’s pipe is qualified in allrespects to ASME Code, Section B31.3, chemical plant and petroleum refining piping for 150psi. Invar’s extremely low thermal contraction eliminates the need for bellows or convolutedflex hose. All-rigid construction means design simplicity and long-term integrity; no extraweld fatigue from adding items for construction; less stress during over-the-road shipments;and minimal damage during installation. Bayonet or field weld connections.

Cryovents and Heaters

Chart’s cryovents areinstalled to enhance theperformance of the pipesystem. In normal operation, some liquid is boiled tovapor from the smallamount of heat leak intothe pipe, and the cryoventallows this gas to escape.Applications requiringcontinuous up-time of liquidin the piping system musthave a cryovent installed toensure quality liquidavailability. The result ismore efficient operation ofthe liquid supply.

Vacuum Jacketed (VJ) Valves

Cryogenic pipe systems oftenrequire valves to properlycontrol the liquid flow to theapplication. Strategicallylocated valves control flowto a branch of the system orinto a use-point drop. Avacuum insulated valve hasthe benefit of extremely lowheat leak for minimum gasboil-off, and it eliminates icebuild-up and dripping water.

Product Advantages

Available in many sizes and styles such as T or Y pattern

The more compact Y-pattern valve is generally used in vertical drops foreasier operation, better reliability and higher flow rates.

Actuators can be installed on valves for control from a remote location orsignal. Standard pneumatic actuators are often used to control flow rate oropen and close valves based on the state of a switch, control system, oroxygen system E-stop switch.

Un-insulated economical brass valves are also available for applications thathave infrequent use. It is highly recommended to locate the internal liquidtrap accessory above the valve to create a gas trap.

Product Advantages

Available in a wide variety of sizes and configurations, including vacuuminsulated exhaust connection to reduce ice build-up from the cold gas

Electric heater options also available as another solution to eliminateexhaust ice build-up

Available with pipe thread or bayonet inlets and outlets for systeminstallation flexibility

Vacuum Insulated Pipe

Flexible VacuumInsulated Pipe

Many vacuum insulated pipesystems require vacuuminsulated flexible lines. These applications includeconnection points to thebulk tank or the applicationequipment such as foodfreezers, test chambers,cryo-biological freezers ornitrogen injectors. Flexiblesections may also be used tomake installations in tight, confined spaces easier.

Vacuum InsulatedWithdrawal

One of the most importantoptions for any vacuuminsulated pipe system is thevacuum insulatedwithdrawal on the liquidstorage vessel. Because thisoption is part of the vesselvacuum system, it must bespecified with the tankorder. Chart’s engineers canhelp make sure the tankand pipe connections arecorrect for properintegration in the field.
