While I’ve had many dreams in my life—artist, fashion designer, and yes, a teacher, at some point—the idea of being a fiction writer has
stuck with me over the years. But the only prob-lem is that I’ve had many ideas, but none of them felt quite right. I can’t count how many unfinished novels sit on my laptop. For National Novel Writ-ing Month a couple of years ago, I stumbled upon an idea that struck me more than any of my previous writing endeavors: a story about a girl who steps into a comic book-esque alter-nate universe. It was the first time I had ever had an idea like that, and I liked it. But eventually, I lost interest. Like so many others, it didn’t feel right. A couple of months ago, I stumbled upon another idea that seemed like a light at the end of the tunnel: a novel that explores what it would be like if Jackson had superheroes. While Jackson isn’t as dark as cities such as Gotham or Starling City, it’s definitely got a little bit of that edge. And when a crime happens, it does make it seem like superheroes would be a good idea. But so much more about Jackson in-spired me to write this novel. For one thing, the people in the metro area served as a big inspiration. It truly is the people that make this city so great. That’s why we’ve taken it upon ourselves in Jackson Free Press and BOOM Jackson to highlight the creativity and ingenuity of local people through the Best of Jackson contest. For instance, you have restaurant entre-preneurs such as Jesse Houston and Grant Hutcheson who, in the span of their first year of business at Saltine Oyster Bar (see page 54) and The Pig & Pint (see pages 48-49), respectively, have managed to do their work so well that they received more than one Best of Jackson award. Jackson’s neighborhoods also inspired me. Fondren won Best Tourist Attraction, and Bel-haven came in as a finalist for Best Reason to Live in Jackson. In BOJ, we use Jacksonians’ votes as a way to essentially create a guide to the area, to high-light what you should do, who you should meet and where you should go.
Like the rest of the city, JFP/BOOM staff-ers pride ourselves on our creativity, and to me, this has been one of our most creative and fun issues to put together. And it would have been much harder if I didn’t have a team behind me. BOOM Assistant Editor and JFP Music
Editor Micah Smith shares the load of work with me each issue. He
helps me assign, does some of the dirtier work (like
putting together the issue “dummy” for the team) and like many of the oth-er JFP/BOOM staffers, keeps me from going in-
sane when things get over-whelming. I’d also like to
give a shoutout to the design department—Art Director Kris-
tin Brenemen, Ad Designer Zilpha Young and Design Intern Joshua Sheriff.
Kristin takes my ideas and turns them into re-ality, making creative designs such as the one for the Whammy Burger at Burgers & Blues (see page 50). Along the way, she takes time to teach Josh. Zilpha designs incredible ads and helps Kristin keep the issue moving. Next, I’d like to mention Jackson Free Press Daily Editor Dustin Cardon, who is an incredibly talented writer and helps me out with factcheck-ing and so many other things. Then there’s JFP News Editor R.L. Nave. He is a talented writer as well, and when I’m hav-ing a particularly overwhelming moment, I can always count on his unique sense of humor and brand of sarcasm to make me laugh. And, of course, I couldn’t possibly do this without the help of our fearless leaders Editor in Chief Donna Ladd and Publisher Todd Stauffer. No matter how crazy it gets, they always manage to keep the wheels turning. I’ve now passed my two-year mark with Jackson Free Press and BOOM magazine. It’s been a crazy ride, and just as Best of Jackson highlights the good parts of the city, I hope I’ve done my best to communicate my love for Jack-son and Mississippi. And I hope it keeps getting better. The city will continue to be an inspiration for both my novel and my everyday life.

• Southern Komfort Brass
Band, which won Best Cover Band, Best Original Band and Best Jazz Band, performed a second line stomp during the party, leading an indoor parade.
• DJ Phingaprint got the crowd on its feet and dancing, as always with a great mix of songs, from “Uptown Funk” to the “Cha Cha Slide.”
• Salsa Mississippi dancers,
including Shawntel McQuarter,
performed a traditional samba performance on center court.
• Inky the Clown made cool balloons for everyone. He made Editor-in-Chief Donna Ladd a hat that Jackson Free Press staffers later turned into an alien intern. Sadly, the balloon intern is no longer with us.
• A bunch of really cool people
and businesses received awards during the Best of Jackson party.
• Restaurants across the metro
area brought tons of delicious food, from Broad Street Baking
Company’s famous king cake
to shrimp and grits from Saltine Oyster Bar and, really, everything in between.
• Jackie Brown Bear
(Jackson Free Press and BOOM
Jackson’s mascot) made a brief appearance. Then dropped the mic and left the stage, as usual.
• The lighting design, by Stephen Barnette, who owns Davaine Lighting, put a cherry on top of a really cool night with multiple floors of crazy
wonderful color. It felt like we were inside a huge lava lamp.

As it does every year on the last Sunday in January, the Jackson Free Press hosted its Best of Jackson party to celebrate everything that’s good about the city, whether food, places
to shop, people to meet or things to do. The JFP has been doing this for 13 years, and we know how to party. This year’s theme was Carnival, and we weren’t talking about the circus. We modeled our party off the world-famous Carnival festival, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, before Lent each year. The festival comes to life with music, elaborate costumes and floats, and samba
school, where neighbors come together to celebrate before the fasts of Lent. Jackson Free Press put its own take on Carnival, and more than 1,500 people turned up to the event in the Landmark Building downtown, complete with colorful, elaborate, feathered masks and festive dress. Some people even dressed like the dancers you’d see in the Rio parade, complete with feathery headdress and bright colors. If you attended the party, and we’re betting that you had a blast. If you could not attend, here is some of what you missed. (Be sure to subscribe to jfpdaily.com to be on the invitation list for next year. It’s free.)

Were you always active, or did you get into fitness later in life? I grew up dancing, so I was really active in that, but I didn’t really get into working out (in a gym setting) until I was in college.
What kinds of things did you start with in college? A lot of cardio and obviously dancing. I’d also do aerobics classes at the gym on (the University of Mississippi) campus. And I was just starting to do a little bit of lifting weights. I would sometimes go with my guy friends and lift a bit.
What fitness lessons do you try to impart to your clients? One of the most important things I try to teach my female clients is (weight lifting). Many women are afraid of doing it (because) they think they’ll get bulky. But, really, for your metabolism and overall health, it’s so important. Obviously, cardio is still a part of that, too, but nutrition is 80 percent of the battle. I see people killing themselves in the gym four or five times a week, but then they’re not going home and eating right, so they’re not seeing results. I talk my clients through all that to reach their fitness goals.
Clearly much of Mississippi has further to go in the fitness department than other states. Do you have any specific advice to Mississippians on being fit and healthy? Obviously, there’s an obesity epidemic. I really think peo-ple need to be more educated, especially kids. … I’m surprised when I get clients that don’t really clearly know what a carb is or how calories work, but it happens more than you’d think. I’d like to see it taught in school more (but people should also work on) educating themselves. Do some research and know what you’re putting in your bodies. There are so many resources, like documentaries, so start learning. Parents, especially, need to know what they are putting into their kids’ bodies.
How do you divide up your workouts? I do a split routine when I’m strength training, so that will be one day back and biceps, one day shoulders and triceps, one day all legs, and one day cardio and abs. I also really like to incorporate high-intensity interval train-ing (HIIT), especially with my higher-weight clients. It’s a great way to burn a lot of calories in a short amount of time.
What’s your guilty pleasure? When I’m treating myself, my fiancé (Nick Carlton) and I love to get pizza. We’ll allow ourselves one cheat a week, so mine is normally pizza with my man.

A Bulldog in a Skirt// by LaTonya Miller
When she was at the top of her game, rap-per Eve called dibs on the title “Pit-bull in a Skirt.” Now, Jackson’s own Ashley Lewis can lay
claim to the top “Bulldog in a Skirt.” Voted Sexiest Bartender in the 2015 Best of Jackson contest, Lewis has been mixing up drinks that have kept customers coming back to The Bulldog (6111 Ridgewood Road) for almost three years. Lewis grew up in Oxford, Miss., and 16 years ago moved with her family to Clinton. “I was born in Texas, but I’ve been in Mississippi my whole life, pretty much,” she says. She attended Mississippi College, walking away just two semesters shy of a bach-elor’s degree in history. Then the newly divorced mom swapped school for work to support her daughter, Phoebe, now 6 years old. Two months after the restaurant opened about six years ago, Lewis went to work at Burgers & Blues. She rose quickly, going from server to managing bartender within eight months. During that time, a doctor diag-nosed Lewis with a rare form of alopecia areata. As a result, she lost all of her hair, which started growing back two years ago.
An August night out with friends in 2012 put Lewis in the right place at the right time. “I was at The Bulldog with some friends, and I began
talking to Valerie (Alexander), the general manager,” she says. “They were about to lose a girl bartender and needed a re-
placement.” One of her favorite specialties she’s created over her seven years as a bartender is the firecracker, which contains bourbon with muddled jalapeños and straw-berries. She offers some bartending tips that apply to anyone in the service industry: smile; learn how to read people; and don’t be afraid to joke with them. The Bulldog (6111 Ridgewood Road) is open Mon-day through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m., and Sun-
day from 11 a.m. to midnight. For more information, visit bulldog-jackson.draftfreak.com.

Best of Jackson’s New Facesby Amber Helsel
Saltine Oyster Bar (Best New Bar; Best Seafood) Jesse Houston opened the restau-rant in fall of last year, and has seen immense success ever since. Saltine has the distinction of being one of the only oyster bars in the area, and it focuses much of its attention to craft beer, especially with its Randall cus-tom-beer infuser (see page 54) and nautical cocktails. It won Best New Bar and Best Sea-food, and with its focus on local and fresh, it’s easy to see why Jacksonians voted for Saltine in both of those categories.
Jeffrey Jackson (Best Professor) Jeffrey Jackson is probably one of the more humble people you’ll ever meet. He’s a distinguished law professor at Missis-sippi College School of Law, with accolades such as MC’s Award for Teaching Excel-lence, under his belt. He has also authored and edited 15 volumes on Mississippi law. To learn more about him, see page 18.
Electric Dagger Tattoo (Best Tattoo/Piercing Parlor) The staff at Electric Dagger has more than 35 years of experience between them,
so you know what you’re getting when you walk in the door. Jason Thomas opened the studio in October 2013 in the lower level of Fon-dren Corner. The staff prides itself on giving clients artist-quality work. To learn more about the shop, see pages 24-25.
The Pig & Pint (Best New Restaurant; Best Place for Ribs; Best Barbecue) The Pig & Pint, which opened last year, adds inno-vative touches to traditional barbecue, such as its Pepsi-glazed baby-back ribs and barbecue tacos. I’m mak-ing myself hungry just writing about this. For more information, see pages 48-49.
Laurie Walker (Best Gospel Artist) Walker says she doesn’t consider her-self a gospel artist. She says she’s more of an “inspirational artist.” The singer released her debut album, “Free in Him: Excerpts of Life,” in November 2012 and is currently working on her sophomore one. For more information, see page 62.

This year, the Best of Jackson contest changed in one significant way and one subtle way. For the first time, there were two ballots: nominations and finalists. Along with that change came this directive: to qualify as a finalist in many of the categories, the winner
needed to be a true local, independent business, as defined by the American Independent Busi-ness Alliance. This means no big-box or chain stores. Like we do in everything, we put Jackson first. Here are a few of the newer faces this year.

The work day of radio personalities Nate West and Tim Murphy of Jack-son radio station Y101.7 is anything but typical. Friends often confuse the
10 a.m. end time for The Morning Showgram as them punching out for the day. But as soon as they hand off the microphone, the real work begins. “In reality, I think the 6 to 10 (a.m. shift) I consider the easy part,” Murphy says. The hard part is deciding what they’re going to do for that four hours. “We’re always trying to find ways to turn our real-life stories and situations into entertaining radio.” That sometimes means telling listen-ers about the less flattering moments of real life. On one show, West told a story about picking up a tube of lip balm from his living room table. “As I’m about to put it on, I look at it and see a little puppy face on the side,” he says. “It says ‘Snout Stick,’ which is for dogs when their noses get raw or whatever. … I was like, ‘OK, I can turn that into a topic: What product have you used when you thought it was some-thing else?’” Slice-of-life moments like that are the program’s calling card. Every morning, thou-sands of listeners around the Jackson metro area tune in to hear about the co-hosts’ day-to-day lives and occasional mishaps. “The easiest way to relate to people is to talk about what regular people live through every day,” West says. The co-hosts’ love of radio dates all the way back to childhood. For West, it started with his youth in Clinton, Miss., calling local radio stations, guest-deejaying when possible and taking airtime where he could. When he was about 15 years old, he called Capitol Kountry 98.7, a country station that The Ra-dio People once owned. “I talked to the guy, he told me what to
say, and I did it right away,” West says. “I know dealing with younger kids, trying to get them to say something particular, you have to do it over and over and over again, and I did it in one take. The guy actually told me, ‘Man, you did a really good job. Have you ever thought about getting into radio?’” He was in 10th grade at Clinton High School when he took a part-time position at the station. After graduation in 1997, he attended Hinds Community College in Raymond for a semester and a half. Just as he ran out of funds to pay for classes, The Radio People of-fered him a full-time job at the newly launched Y101.7, which started in September 1996. “I was like, ‘Well, I’m out of money, I was paying for school to do this, and here’s the op-portunity right here,’” he says. Murphy’s career trail was a bit less di-
rect. His parents were both in the Air Force, and the family moved a number of times be-fore settling down in Yorktown, Va., when Murphy was in 7th grade. He caught the ra-dio bug when he was in 3rd grade in Little Rock, Ark. The town had a kid-friendly sta-
tion called KPAL that played novelty hits and children’s music. Murphy and his sister were regulars at the station, constantly calling in and winning prizes. The show also occasion-ally let kids on as guest deejays. “My sister got to be on the show with … Surfin’ Sam, their morning guy, and I literally cried because it was my sister’s time to be on the radio and not mine,” he says. His fascination with radio didn’t seem like a career possibility until many years later. “People ask you in high school, ‘What do you want to do? … What are you going to study?’ I’d always say, ‘Something with com-puters,’ because I liked playing ‘Doom’ and ‘Wolfenstein’ on computers,” he says. Instead, thanks to a few compliments on his voice, he entered a radio-station intern-
ship. Soon after, he attended George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., where he gradu-ated with a bachelor’s degree in communications in 2003. He bounced between ra-dio stations for a while, working on everything from college to country stations before finding his way to Y101.7 in 2009. Even after six years of working together, West and Murphy still look for ways to hone their craft, whether it’s trying new things or learning what works for others. “A lot of times, I’ll spend my day, when I leave here, listening to podcasts
of other radio shows that are in our … format and are successful across the country and kind of learn from them,” West says. “I think we’re always trying to grow and learn rather than thinking we sound better than anybody else,” Murphy says.

Electric Dagger Tattoo founder Jason Thomas says he got into tattooing for the art form and as a form of rebellion. “I didn’t get into tattooing to be an entre-preneur,” he says.
Since moving the shop into its Fondren location in October 2013, Electric Dagger Tattoo has been a staple of what many con-sider the city’s most vivacious neighborhood. “If you’re going to be in Jackson, Fondren is the coolest place,” Thomas says. Even within the one of the more popular areas of Jackson, Electric Dagger’s edge sticks out. The store is visually vibrant, with walls painted a shade of teal that hits the eye like candy. Original tattoo artwork stretches to the ceiling, providing custom-ers with an array of potential designs, should they want them. The art trends toward the psychedelic: polychro-matic skulls, animals and, of course, daggers. Staff selec-tions of everything from in-die to country music projects from the speakers when you walk in the door. “I want people to have fun in here,” Thomas says. A tattoo artist for 17 years, the meticulous designs he creates in studio and his ex-citement when discussing the craft’s modern evolution from sailors to biker gangs to the mainstream make it evi-dent that his passion is tattooing. Thomas met much of the staff years back through their shared interest that is now their profession. “I met Jason at a tat-too shop (Dermagraphics Ink) way back,” says Clint Dear, who manages Electric Dagger and is a delivery driver for Jackson Free Press and BOOM Jackson. Staff members Thomas, Dear, Mallory Palmertree and Mikey “Iron Mike” Richardson have worked alongside each other for years. After admiring the shop as outsiders, both Palmertree and Richardson sought out Thom-as in hopes of breaking into the industry.
While quality is the long-term factor, the experience of actu-ally getting the tattoo is significant as well. Many customers have known Thomas and his staff since his shop was called The Ink Spot and was on Capitol Street. That was in the mid-2000s. After Capitol Street, Thomas moved his shop to a loft in the old Ironworks building on South Street, then to a space off Inter-state 55 North, before settling into Fondren Corner as Electric Dagger. The name and locations may have changed, but many of the customers have not. “Tattoo artists are like modern-day psychologists,” says Ert DiRosa, the newest addition to the Electric Dagger staff who moved to Jackson from Missouri in December. “While spend-
ing multiple hours with regular customers on the bench, they’re going to open up about their rela-tionships and struggles.” In the way that tattooing brought the Electric Dagger staff to-gether, Thomas hopes his store builds friendships among customers. “My hope is that peo-ple meet here who never would’ve met otherwise,” Thomas says. “Everyone here will say hello and talk to you.” The friendliness is not unconditional, how-ever. As more people have
accepted tattoos, many have become curious about them. Some of these newer patrons occasionally demand an overly deferential customer service that Electric Dagger has no desire providing. “If customers give us sh*t and don’t treat us with respect, we’ll kick them out,” Richardson says.
Electric Dagger Tattoo (2906 N. State St., Suite B-6) is open Tuesday-Saturday from 1 to 9 p.m. For more information, visit electricdagger.com or find the shop on Facebook and Instagram.

On March 27, The Pig & Pint chef and co-owner Grant Hutcheson was busy finalizing preparations for the an-nual Zippity Doo Dah parade weekend. He still carved out a little time to have lunch with his mom.
Hutcheson, who grew up around the corner on Lorenz Avenue and runs the business with partner Chris Clark, counts his parents, Linda and Gene Hutcheson, hospital workers and other Fondrenites among the growing number of regulars at the barbecue restaurant. “When the weather permits, we’re normally packed out for lunch,” Hutcheson says. One year has passed since The Pig & Pint’s grand opening during Zippity Doo Dah weekend in 2014 and, in a competitive and discerning local market for barbecue, Hutcheson is happy with the restaurant’s performance. He says the location, which housed a pa-rade of businesses over the years—most recently Mimi’s Family and Friends and then a farmer’s market stand for a brief time—couldn’t have worked out better. Plus, in this year’s Best of Jackson readers’ poll, The Pig & Pint captured three awards—Best Barbe-cue, Best Place for Ribs and Best New Restaurant—even though it’s the new kid on the block up against perennial powerhouses like E&L Barbecue and Chimneyville Smokehouse. Hutcheson points to the awards as evidence that the restaurant is going in the right direction and getting better every day. Clark—the “pint guy” to Chef Hutcheson’s “pig guy,” according to their business cards—is a guild-certified sommelier and oversees beer procurement that includes a total of 113 labels. The restaurant keeps eight regional beers on tap. Hutcheson, who got his start at Ridgeland’s Parker House Res-taurant when he was 15, has worked many restaurant jobs, includ-ing as a sous chef at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse. He also helped open Parlor Market in 2010, working at one point as its pastry chef.
The Pig & Pint’s menu—a creation of Hutcheson, Clark and their culinary team—includes baby-back ribs with a Pepsi glaze and pork-belly corndogs. Pulled pork, chicken or brisket is available in tacos, nachos and, of course, sandwiches. All the food is made in-house, including the potato salad and salad dressing. The sauces, including tomato-based Mississippi “Sweet” BBQ, Carolina Mustard and sweet potato habanero hot sauce, are also for sale. In the past year, Hutcheson has added a Reuben, a bologna sandwich and boudin balls, which was originally a boudin-link fea-ture to the regular menu. The restaurant is planning to expand its outdoor seating by 40
percent as its next goal, en-closing the patio to help cool it down during the summer and offer warmth on colder days. The restaurant is also toying with the idea of a sec-ond bar. So far, the owners have no plans to add new locations, but the restaurant is growing its catering busi-ness. Its whole-hog catering service can come with or without a taco bar with eight different types of pickles, mango hicama slaw and a beer pico de gallo. Other ca-tering favorites are smoked beef tenderloin, New Or-
leans-style barbecue shrimp and smoked tuna dip. The Pig & Pint’s owners are excited about a new housing development going up near Hutcheson’s childhood neighbor-hood—the soon-to-be-constructed Meridian on Lakeland Drive, which Hutcheson believes will help build on the restaurant’s first-year successes. “It’s the food, it’s the atmosphere, it’s the beer selection,” Hutcheson says. “We’re definitely doing what we set out to do.” The Pig & Pint (3139 N. State St., 601.326.6070) is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. The restaurant plans to open on Sundays beginning soon. Visit pigandpint.com.

Marketing director may not sound like a career that garners much
excitement, but Tupelo, Miss., native Jordan Harris transforms average shows into amazing events, which probably helped Duling Hall win the award for Best Live Music Venue in the 2015 Best of Jackson contest. Harris, 23, graduated from the University of Mis-
sissippi in 2013 with a bach-elor’s degree in marketing and public relations. After noticing a shift in social media’s influence on how brands reach custom-ers, Harris decided that mar-keting was a perfect career fit. In college, she interned at The Lyric, a music venue in Oxford, Miss., and it was through her internship that she began volunteering for
Jackson-based entertainment company Ardenland. “A marketing position opened up last June, and Ar-den (Barnett) told me to do a project for some made-up show,” she says. “I had to do this whole marketing plan and come up with a poster with fake ads for Facebook. Arden interviewed me and another guy, and here I am.” As marketing director, Harris manages Ardenland
and Duling Hall’s social-me-dia accounts, sorts through emails, and sends out press releases and posters for Ar-denland’s next shows. Harris says she’s not tal-ented on the graphic-design side of marketing, but she helps give artists and events a fresher look. Sometimes, it’s as simple as doing social media, but with events like the Livingston LIVE Concert Series, held this May
in Madison, Harris says she had to create a new Facebook page and take the brand in a new direction targeted to a younger audience. Harris is currently work-ing on two of her biggest projects to date: the Jimmie Rodgers Music Festival, an annual festival held in Merid-ian in May, and classic-rock band Boston’s upcoming per-formance at Thalia Mara Hall in June. Harris says creating a marketing plan is a chal-lenge, but she is confident she will make it work. “It’s crazy. Every day, there’s something coming at you,” she says. “I’m kind of new, but (I’m) totally figuring out where I should market it, trying to figure out what’s best for my project.” For Harris, the best part of working with Ardenland is the feeling that she’s part of a family. Marketing, similar to running a business, can be a 24/7 job, but she says it doesn’t feel like work. “I know it sounds cliché, but I get paid to do what I love,” she says. “This job just fell into my hands at the per-fect moment.” For more information on Ardenland or Duling Hall (622 Duling Ave., 601.292.7121), visit ardenland.com.

Jackson inspirational artist Laurie Walker re-leased her debut EP, “Free in Him: Excerpts of Life,” in November 2012. The fact that it’s still affecting listeners is a testament to the qual-
ity of her music. While Walker’s next studio project is still in the future, that doesn’t mean fans have to wait to hear her soulful vocals elsewhere. Here are a few tracks that benefit from Walker’s signature sound.
“God” by 7evenThirty Jackson-native rapper 7evenThirty’s 2012 album, “Heaven’s Comput-er,” has plenty of powerhouse guest spots, but Walker’s sweet delivery on the track “God” adds another level to this emotional tale of parenthood.
“The Purpose” by P. Lo Jetson It took a special kind of confidence in Walker’s skill for Clinton, Miss., Christian rapper P. Lo Jetson to place her on the opening track of his 2012 full-length release, let alone the title track. Here, Walker isn’t rel-egated to one role, providing backing vocals and an instantly singable chorus.
“No Fear” by J. Nathan Walker is at her most dynamic in Mississippi Delta native J. Nathan’s 2015 single, “No Fear.” While the Christian hip-hop artist’s lyrics pack plen-ty of punch on their own, Walker steals the show with appearances in the piano-laden chorus and sporadic refined vocal runs.

BEST OF JACKSON 2015: NIGHTLIFE & MUSIC from page 64
66 May - June 2015 // The City’s Business and Lifestyle Magazine bestofjackson.com | boomjackson.com
Look in the music listings in the Jackson Free Press, and you’ll probably notice several open-mic nights that take place in the metro area early in the week.
Open-mic nights are a great way for amateur performers to get their feet wet or for seasoned musicians to try out new material. Whether you fall into either of those catego-ries, Brock Bailey, who runs Open Mic Night at Fenian’s Pub, a perennial Best of Jackson winner for that Best Open-Mic Night category, has a few tips for people coming out to play.
1. Don’t fake it. “Just play to your ability. To be honest, most open-mic audiences
want to see people either be great or bomb, but if you’re not yourself, they’ll turn off immediately.”
2. Be comfortable on stage. “This is hard-er to explain, but the more you think about
(the performance), the worse it can be. You have to just do it. Chances are, you’ve practiced and know your material.”
3. Think about why you’re doing it. “Whether you’re trying out new mate-
rial or just trying to entertain, be aware of who you’re playing to.”
4. Mix it up. “I like to play a couple of cover songs before I play my own. Then, if the
audience likes it, I’ll tell them that it’s my song. I try to make it a little funny.” Another thing to remember about open-mic nights is that they aren’t just for musicians. Bai-ley says that Fenian’s welcomes comedians and poets, as well. So, start practicing your skill of choice. You never know what may happen.
Fenian’s Pub (901 E. Fortification St.) is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m., Saturday from 4 p.m to 2 a.m., and is closed on Sunday. The kitchen is open Monday through Thursday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Friday from 11 a.m. to midnight, and Saturday from 4 p.m. to midnight. Fenian’s hosts Open Mic Night weekly on Tuesday night. I have twin girls who are seniors in high school this year. I have been married for almost 30 years, I am a restaurateur who co-owns Mangia Bene with Dan Blumenthal. And I love the ’80s. So what does that mean? It means that going out for the Good family is different than for most. Our fridge is either filled
with produce and fruit to sustain the unquenchable appetites of our college-bound swimmers, or it has the remains of some Sal & Mookie’s take-out or a BRAVO! salad. And the ‘80s reference is totally random and placed just for literary effect … a foreshadowing, perhaps? That said, what are my top 10 local favorites? And how can I do this without getting in trouble with all the other restaurateurs in town? Well, here I go … cautiously.
MY LOCAL LIST
1. Kinkade’s Fine Clothing (120 W. Jackson St., Ridgeland,
601.898.0513, kinkadesfc.com) So I don’t shop. Really. That is why all you clothiers get mad at me. “Where do you get your clothes?” they ask. “Not often and on sale” is the answer. I am a sale shopper (I grew up modestly and started working when I was 13), so you will find
me at Kinkade’s in Ridgeland when Keith Kinkade sells off the outgoing season’s styles. I have followed Keith since his days working for Billy Neville at The Rogue. Do y’all remember that wall of Polos? Yes, that was a blatant ‘80s preppie reference.
2. Montgomery Ace Hardware (2801 Old Canton Road, 601.366.4441]
I said I don’t shop, but if you look at my monthly American Express bill, you will see charge after charge for Montgomery Ace Hardware in Fondren.
Funny thing is, most charges are $8 or less. Why? Because Ace is the place with the helpful hardware men. Need a screw and a gizmo to clamp down a doo-hicky? Just ask Willis White or Earnest Jones. They know the aisles like the back of their hands. And Mack Hales? That guy is resourceful, responsive and pretty darned funny. Please shop Montgomery Ace and don’t let another neighborhood hardware store go the way of leg warmers.
3. McDade’s Markets (various locations, mcdadesmarkets.com)
I love the smell of a real grocery store, and I like aisles I can navigate without surprises. Do I like Whole Foods Market (4500 Interstate 55 N., 601.608.0405)? Oh, yeah! Who doesn’t? That’s like Christmas in July. But man cannot live by Whole Foods alone, folks. Don’t forget our neighbors, the McDades. Greg’s been working in the grocery business since the ‘80s … maybe before?
4. Briarwood Wine & Spirits (4949 Old Canton Road, 601.956.5108,
briarwoodwineandspirits.com) And I don’t even drink. Really. I used to, back in the ‘80s, but that’s another story. Briarwood proprietors Lesley and Nathan McHardy are sharp cookies. Don’t let Nathan’s bowling shirt fool you. Under that tunic lies one of the most creative marketing minds I know. And Lesley? I have pictures of her in the ‘80s, and she was the sommelier at BRAVO! in the ‘90s and 2000s. And now she can help you find that perfect wine to drink
while watching “The Breakfast Club.”
5. Mr. Chen’s Authentic Chinese Cooking
(5465 Interstate 55 N., 601.978.1865, briarwoodwineandspirits.com) I love, love, love this addition to our town. Outstanding, authentic and tasty. They ain’t afraid of using a lot of entrails. (You can have those, Tom Ramsey. The Goods

will stick with things sans organ meat and tripe). Great food, great prices, super take-out. Oh, and lots of kitschy stuff hanging from the walls that makes me think of the ‘80s.
6. Mississippi Museum of Art’s The Palette Café (380 S. Lamar St.,
601.960.1515, msmuseumart.org) I spend a lot of time in meetings for everything from community work to civic projects to nonprofit efforts. I am
often downtown, and I love to drop by the
museum and catch a tasty bite with Nick
Wallace, Jackson’s most unique chef.
Reared in his grandmother’s kitchen in Edwards, Miss., Nick learned to love
food straight from the ground. I love
Nick’s pickles. And most everything else.
Oh, and Nick was born in the ‘80s.
7. Avondale Street to Wooddale Drive to Crane Boulevard to Nassau Street to
Greenwich Street to Cambridge Drive.
That’s the route of my nightly walk with my two dogs, Mia, a Westie, and Abbie (of Lord knows what Community Animal Rescue and Adoption mix, but precious!). We three walk these streets around 10 or 11 p.m. every night. Like watchmen, we make the rounds. I enjoy the solitude and quiet, and I often listen to podcasts such as “This American Life” or “Snap Judgment.” I do not, however, listen to ‘80s music, which is weird, but I prefer the spoken word when walking. Maybe I should see a shrink about that.
8. La Brioche (2906 N. State St., 601.988.2299, labriochems.com)
Newcomers Alejandra Sprouts and Cristina Lazzari of La Brioche are putting out the finest examples of Viennese and
high-end pastries in our market, hands down. I respect them and love what they have carved out in Fondren.
9. The University of Mississippi Medical Center
(2500 N. State St., 601.984.1000)
This is going to sound weird, but I really like this place! I have been fortunate enough to be involved in a series of projects that have taken me into “the bowels of the beast,” and I have found that UMMC is an amazing organization chock full of smart, caring people who work daily to make our lives better. Six or seven years ago, my primary doctor moved from his private practice group to the UMMC physicians, and I had my first experience in the hospital. It was
incredibly efficient. I think that I will live well
past my 80s, thanks to the work going on at the corner of State Street and Woodrow Wilson Drive.
10. Lou’s Full-Serv (904 E. Fortification St.,
601.487.6359, lousfullserv.com) Louis LaRose, Jesse Houston, Alex Eaton, Gary Hawkins and Matthew Kajdan are the young bucks of the Jackson culinary scene, and they are killing it. Fresh, amazing, incredible. You go, boys! Make old men like Dan Blumenthal and me look bad, like we are cooking in the ‘80s. We know you want to.
