From the HeadmasterDear Members of the Marist College Community,

We celebrated Champagnat Day last Friday. The Mass was magnificent!! A great tribute to St Marcellin and the seventy years this College has proudly served the Marist family of Brisbane. Br Emili, the Superior General, and Br Joseph, the Vicar General, of the Marist Brothers worldwide who were able to be present at this wonderful celebration were very impressed with the boys and their active involvement in the Mass. My thanks to:

• The Mission Team• The Music Faculty• The Sound and Technology team• Mr Moniz and the Year 10 Boarding students who set up the Champagnat

Centre • Joe Gardiner 12D and his grandfather who built the boat used in the Mass• Fr Jim Hargrave• Leo Martinez 12R who spoke to Br Emili on our behalf in Spanish, and Mr Ruiz who translated Leo’s speech into

English.• Pam Stoodley who printed the Mass booklets.

At this same Mass we presented the inaugural Champagnat Day Awards. These awards will be presented to those in our Community who model to us through their daily lives the qualities that St Marcellin Champagnat shared and nurtured in the first Marist Community. The citation on the certificate reads as follows:

In his life Marcellin Champagnat displayed among others the qualities of being; Faithful, Encouraging, Persistent, Trusting, Caring, Hardworking, Generous, Respectful.

The Champagnat award acknowledges these qualities in service of theMarist College Ashgrove Community

In this inaugural year there were 3 recipients of this Champagnat Day award. These words were taken from the Mass:

“Our first today is awarded to one of our families. This family has for a number of years been an intrinsic part of many of the Marist Family celebrations and activities. One of the characteristics of Marist Education is Family Spirit. From the very beginning of this College parents of different generations have stepped forward with generosity to respond to particular needs, the family we honour today in a special way gives life to their belief that their sons’ education is important and that they are prepared to support them with the elements of service, sacrifice and commitment. They do this freely with their dedicated involvement with the Parents and Friends Association, the BBQ with homeless people especially over holiday periods, the Walkathon organisation team and in many other small ways. These elements are all part of Family life and Marist Community. Our Champagnat Day award to our Marist Family for 2010 goes to John and Debbie Moloney.

From the Headmaster Continued...

The characteristic of Presence within our Community is the hallmark of our staff member who will receive our second award today. By presence we mean a person whose faith, whose manner and whose insight are given simply, freely and with a generosity that knows no bounds in the service of this Marist Community. Our staff member’s presence in the staff room, the playground, on the BBQ with homeless people and wherever he situates himself always commands the deepest trust, respect and affection from all within our Community. The other characteristic of Marist life evident in this staff member is in the way of Mary. Our recipient’s firmness, his gentleness, and his compassion speak to us of Mary’s way of relating. He animates a love of God, a dedication to others and a passion for this Marist Community in his daily response to the little things - always with care, attentiveness and humility. Our Champagnat Day award to our Marist Staff Member for 2010 is awarded to Mr Richard Ward. The Champagnat Day award is open to any student in our College. The inaugural award goes to a Year 12 student. Our recipient for the Student award is an extraordinary young man who displays two qualities of Marist Education - those of Simplicity and Hard work. These are seen as he quietly contributes in so many different facets of College life, in his commitment to service, academic studies, and sport. In the respectful and gracious manner he shows to staff, his peers, and younger students. Our recipient is often seen before and after school assisting other students who may be struggling. It is seen in his openness to our visitors at the BBQ with the homeless. He always offers dedicated, supportive encouragement to Ashgroves’ sporting teams. It is seen in his tireless endeavours in his own academic achievements. Champagnat said ‘a good character is the source of great happiness’ - our recipients humour, warmth and determination are elements of this good character that speak to our Marist Community. Our Champagnat Day award to our Marist Student for 2010 goes to Angus Martin. This event couldn’t but help you feel proud to be a part of the Marist College Ashgrove family.

Ok everyone, it’s crunch time.

Tables for the Blue & Gold Ball have now sold out and we have started a waiting list.

There are still some seats available so please contact Community Relations Manager Kay Wells on 3858 4586 if you wish to attend this fantastic night of Marist community spirit.We are going to have a beautifully decorated room in honour of Marist’s 70th anniversary filled with more than 600 guests. We’ve booked the band, have been thinking about what meal to serve and drinks to order and just about have our auction items finalised.

The only problem is, we have not had any sponsors come on board yet. Not one. Nada. We have over 1100 families at Marist so we are asking people to think really hard about whether they can prioritise Blue & Gold ball sponsorship for this year.

We need sponsors. This makes a big difference to the amount of money we can raise for our new state-of-the-art science centre, which is a $10 million project.

Over the past two years the Blue & Gold Ball has raised more than $100,000 for the science centre, but as you can appreciate, we have a long way to go.

So, please consider becoming a $5,000 sponsor. Your table of 10 guests will enjoy full table service throughout the evening and you will receive recognition in the program, school newsletter, on the College website and during the evening’s audio-visual presentation. The Champagnat Trust has been established to provide assistance to persons in necessitous circumstances selected on the basis of financial need. The Trust takes its name from the Founder of the Marist Brothers, St Marcellin Champagnat. These bursaries are intended for our existing students and new students intending to enter the College as boarders in Years 10, 11 and 12 in 2011. Applicants must be Australian citizens or permanent residents. the closing date for applications will be wednesday 30 June 2010.

These Champagnat Trust Boarding Bursaries –

• Are generally intended for students who live in rural, regional or remote communities who would otherwise not be able to access a Marist education.

• Cover half tuition, half boarding and half compulsory fees. The remaining half tuition, half boarding and half compulsory fees and miscellaneous costs will be the responsibility of the parent/s;

Applicants must be prepared to board at the College for the period of their bursary. If at any time the student requests a change to day status the bursary will be withdrawn and full day student fees will then apply.

CarD Day terM 2

Our Card Day on 26 May was another pleasant day in the Cyprian Pavilion. We enjoyed the company of 118 guests who were mostly playing bridge throughout the day.

Thank you very much to all of our wonderful volunteers who contributed to making the day that it was, especially the mums who helped at short notice; Jo Hodgetts, Helen Buck, Adele Hamilton, Veronique Maes, Paula Cramsie, Debbie Heather, Helen Perry and Julie Stower.

Thanks to our College families who sponsored the raffle this term; Notting, Busby and Toolis Families and the Marist Old Boys Association.

Our hospitality boys were again very much involved with the day with Gary Keown’s help and it was great to have their company and baking which was readily purchased by our guests.

We would love to have some more Junior school mums come along to Card Day to volunteer. Please call us if you would like to pop in and stay for an hour. It’s a great opportunity to meet some other Marist mums and we promise that you will enjoy yourself.

P&F NewssPOrts CaNteeNsThe rugby/soccer season has been extremely busy for the sports canteen committee with a canteen being run almost every weekend this term.

Our thanks go out to the year level co-ordinators who have ensured that the canteen has enough volunteers to run smoothly each Saturday.

Thank you to Roberta Bannah, Angie Ciocca, Kerrie Callaghan, Carol Bendall, Sue Kendall, Therese Eddy and Jo Darwin for their wonderful organization in making sure that enough people are on hand each Saturday for the canteens. Thank you also to those people who have responded and have spent time in the canteen this year. Without your help there would be no canteens.

Now the rugby/soccer season is quickly coming to an end with only two home games left. This weekend sees the junior school playing Churchie and June 12 will see the last combined home games for 2010. Marist V St Laurence’s. Year 8 parents will be asked to volunteer to man the canteen for these games and if you are able to help can you please contact Jane Kinsella at [email protected] or Roberta Bannah at [email protected]

“the rugby/football round against st laurence’s will be the highlight of this year’s football season. as well as our regular match supporters, Old Boys from both Marist and st laurence’s first XV teams from 1950, 1960 and 1970 will be attending. there will also be some class reunions and a visit to the game will be part of the get together. a huge day! we encourage you to come along to this celebration and if possible to assist in the sports canteen- we will need all the help we can get!”

year 10-12 GyM DaNCe Thank you to the parents and teachers who assisted with last week’s gym dance. We realize how busy everyone is at this time of year but thank you for giving up your Saturday night to help out. For those who have never supervised a gym dance before, these are held for Years 10-12 once a term. Parent supervisors are NOT in the gym with the students but are required to “store” the hundreds of bags brought to the gym – the beginning and end of the night is very busy!

As parents it is easy to be critical of teachers (based on our son/s perceptions) – but how many of us would love their job?

We ask that you will consider spending five minutes emailing a teacher/s of whom your son has spoken fondly. A quick email can mean a world of difference to a bad day – just write their …… surname initial @ marash.qld.edu.au.

If each family would email just one teacher we would have over 1000 positive comments coming their way – a quiet achievement. If you have any difficulty or are unsure of how to spell the teacher’s name, please email me at [email protected] and I will ensure they are forwarded. And finally……Early in Term 3 we will be calling for nominations for the 2010-2011 P&F Committee. Details of nomination procedures will follow with the first newsletter. Our meeting dates for next term are July 19 and August 2 (AGM). All are welcome.

Sunday 20th June UN World Refugee Day: Every year on June 20 the world honours the courage, resilience and strength of refugees, women, men and children who are forced to flee their homeland under the threat of persecution, conflict and violence. Attention is focused not only on the plight of refugees and the causes of their exile, but also on their determination and will to survive and on the contributions they make to their host communities.

Sunday 20th June Simply Sharing Week commences: Simply sharing week is an ecumenical activity of the International aid development agencies of the Christian Churches of Australia. It is an opportunity for communities in Australia to work together to learn and act in order to make the world a better place. Simply Sharing suggests a movement towards living simply and sharing what we have. It suggests, too, that we can make a difference to the massive problems of injustice and poverty in the world: by making some sacrifices in our own lives, we can help to bring hope into the lives of others.

Feast Day of St Marcellin Champagnat Celebrations With the feast day of Marcellin Champagnat on the 6th June, the entire College Community celebrated this special event in our Marist lives on Friday 4th June beginning with the Eucharist at the Champagnat Day Mass. Celebrated by Bishop Joseph Oudeman OFMCap DD. Our Liturgy incorporated special recognition of 2010 being dedicated by the Holy Father as the Year of the Priest. It was a great pleasure to have Fr Ken Howell, Father Harry Moore SM, Fr Peter Brannelly, Fr Pat Doran and Fr James O’Donohue, who concelebrated with Bishop Joseph. As a Marist Community we welcomed Br Emili – Superior General and Br Joseph – Vicar General of the Marist Brothers. As a Community we acknowledged Christ call to each of us to come and follow him. During the mass we also celebrated and remembered those generations of Marists who have responded to the call to follow the Marist way, to be the good news of Jesus for others, particularly young people and the poor and vulnerable in our society. Jesus gathers us together. As he gathered his disciples around the boat so we also gathered together as a community. We remember that it is through those we journey with that God is revealed to us. Br Emili, the 13th successor to St. Marcellin, placed for us the World Youth Day pilgrim staff, a reminder of the challenge we have before us to follow in the footsteps of Marcellin and his companions, to leave our safe harbours and put out into the deep trying to develop a way of being, loving, and doing that is our response to Jesus’ challenge to “come, follow me”.

The Champagnat day awards were

presented to Deb and John Moloney; to Angus Martin and to Mr Richard Ward. These awards acknowledge the contributions made by these people to the Marist Community.

Social Justice Forum at Australian Catholic University On Friday 28th May twelve students from years ten and eleven accompanied by Br. Mark Fordyce, travelled to the Australian Catholic University at Banyo to participate in the Social Justice Forum Day. ACU has an impressive commitment to social justice with a strong sense of social responsibility, concern for the moral and ethical dimensions of life and dignity of all human beings. The Forum provided an opportunity for our students to engage in a range of workshops that were designed to instill passion and to further enrich

and foster social justice within them, enabling them to bring back new ideas and a sense of further commitment to the social Justice causes that Marist College supports. On the day the key note speaker was MS Therese Rein, wife of the Prime Minister, who is a psychologist and trained rehabilitation counsellor. In the past two years she has been involved in a number of issues in her official capacity including homelessness, disability and mental health. make milkshakes for families staying there looking after sick and hospitalized children.

PNG IMMERSION NEWS The immersion group travelling to Yangaroo in PNG had their preparation weekend at the Brothers residence Tugan on the 28th and 29th May. This preparation gave the opportunity for the group of pilgrims to understand a little more the significance of what they are about to undertake on behalf of Marist. Br Chris Wills the Director of MAPS (Marist Asia Pacific Solidarity) spoke about the receiving community at Yangaroo and how excited they were that we were taking the time and commitment to go and share their lives for ten days. The Immersion group will leave Australia on the 23rd June and return on the 3rd July. The commissioning prayer will take place at the Brothers Chapel on the 10th June where the staff, boys and their families will be commissioned and enjoy dinner with the Brothers Community on the same evening.

Mates Free Dress Day On Thursday 27th June the school community participated in the MATES free dress day with a gold coin donation as the major fund raiser for the MATES Program.

A big thank you to all boys, parents, staff members and marist community members for the outstanding Blue & Gold Concert. Particular congratulations to Bryce Gilholme, Brodie McAllistair and Nathan Hearn who were featured soloists on the night. The standard of performance in all items was outstanding and for the first time in the history of concerts in the Draney Theatre the Orchestra and soloist Nathan Hearn received a standing ovation for their performance of Rhapsody in Blue. Some of the many emails we received from the community included:

INstrUMeNtal rePOrts

As we are moving to a new computerised system for instrumental reports this year reports for all instrumental and vocal lessons will be sent out early in Semester 2. They will not be going out as usual with the boys’ academic reports at the end of term 2.

atteNDaNCe at lessONs*

With exams and the end of term coming up it is important that students make sure they notify the music department if they cannot make a lesson. If a student, for any genuine reason such as a test or very important lesson, is unable to attend his instrumental lesson, he must advise his teacher and the Music Department ([email protected]). In most cases, if we have prior notice, an alternative lesson time can be arranged. However, if the student does not notify us in advance, it is very difficult to make alternate lesson times. If the student simply forgets to come to the lesson, we have no obligation to make up that lesson.

When a student is absent on exams, excursions, camps etc., we will endeavor to make up this lesson at another time providing we are given prior notice by the student or his parents.

With many disruptions throughout the term it is important for parents to check this each weekend.

BlUe & GOlD 2010CONCert


Hello to you all again. We pick up our tale of Marist College Ashgrove with the departure of the legendary brother Brother Cyprian Dowd from the College at the end of his Directorship in late 1952. The Provincial Council decided that his successor would be Brother Ferrer Robinson, largely on two counts: Ferrer had been at Ashgrove since 1945, and so was well versed in its ethos and culture, and Cyprian himself recommended the appointment of someone who had been a staunch ally and deputy throughout his Directorship. The more usual practice was to bring in “new blood” from outside, so Cyprian’s endorsement was probably decisive. Ferrer moved into the Director’s Office in the Tower Block in early 1953.

Mark Farrelly’s “Canvas of Dreams”does not sing the praises of Ferrer’s period: its chapter on 1953 to 1958 is entitled “second fiddle”. The impression one gains is of a man lacking in confidence, struggling with the exacting demands of leading the College and knowing he was not quite up to the job. My personal opinion is that “Canvas of Dreams” is probably too hard on Brother Ferrer, and that this was a period when significant events in the Ashgrove saga occurred.

Certainly, he had a hard act to follow in Cyprian, and ANYONE would have suffered in comparison. Secondly, the charisma so necessary to dynamic leadership is given to very few: most of us simply have to do the best we can in the daytime, and then worry about it at night, and Ferrer was like most of us. He was small in stature, but presented a tough exterior to the world, perhaps to compensate for his smallness: the boys took to calling him “Mighty Mouse” as a result. He could be very strict, and never hesitated to use punishment, sometimes corporal. He wasn’t approachable, as Cyprian was, and scarcely, if ever, dropped his guard to reveal his inner self. He was an efficient Science and Religion teacher, well-organised and well prepared; as one former student remembers, “ You did well in Junior and Senior if you learned what he taught you.” He was also known as an excellent cricket coach, taking the First XI to many Premierships, and his 7 stone 7 Rugby League team (in the days before Union) swept all opponents away. He also had a great deal to do in the supervision of the boarders – persistent and constant in this supervision, he is remembered by one boarder as the epitome of “good order”.

His best quality, however, according to his students, was his scrupulous fairness: there was one law for all, and it applied to everyone equally. As one remembers, “it was a characteristic that was part and parcel of him.” There is an anecdote told of Ferrer as umpire of a First XI game between Ashgrove and St Laurence’s. With their last man at the wicket, SLC needed only a few runs. A terrific appeal rent the air: the outcome of the match was in Ferrer’s hands; after solemn deliberation, he announced the batsman was “not out”, and SLC went on to win. As one fieldsman remembers, “If it had gone the other way, no one would have queried it, least of all the batsman; it was that close.” Nonetheless, Ferrer as umpire had demonstrated the integrity that lay at the very core of his being.

He was also a totally committed Marist Brother, devoted to the sense of community fostered by the Order, and carried a deep sense of prayer in his life. He encouraged his students to follow Marcellin Champagnat, and one present Brother of the Ashgrove community unhesitatingly nominates Ferrer as his inspiration in deciding to join the Brothers.

His virtues, then, were manifold; he might not have been a Cyprian, but he was a capable man who was aware of his limitations, particularly in interpersonal relations, and did his best despite those limitations. That he faced challenges was undeniable, particularly with regard to the infrastructure of the school: by the mid 1950s, Marist College Ashgrove was becoming too large in student numbers for the existing buildings to accommodate. Classes were overflowing onto verandahs, and the situation had to be solved somehow. As so often in Marist College history, the situation would draw forth the personality to provide the solution, (Cometh the Hour, Cometh the Man). And while that man wasn’t Ferrer, he was wise enough to allow the man who was full rein.

But the circumstances of all that will have to wait for another day…….

Junior School NewsJUnIoR SChooL nEWS Dear Parents, Staff and Boys,

The College celebrated the Feast of Saint Marcellin Champagnat on Friday 4th June. It was a great day and I am sure the boys left the College on Friday far more aware of the influence of this young French Priest.

For our short Reflection, I will provide some personal thoughts on Marcellin Champagnat, particularly his Spirituality, after many years of association with the Marist Brothers and many Marist schools, both in Australia and South Africa.

Marcellin was the youngest of a large farming family, who were not poor. His father was very involved in civil matters and was even involved with the French Revolution. The Champagnat farm seemed to be profitable and the family lived in a modest, but adequate home. It seems to be a very warm and happy environment for the young Marcellin and an addition to the family was an aunt, who was a nun, but had been forced from her Convent during the French Revolution. She came to stay with the family at this time and I am sure there would have been interesting discussions between the aunt and Marcellin’s father!

I believe Marcellin’s mother had a profound affect on him. His mother was deeply religious and this was very much part of their home life. Her religion would have been pious, but doesn’t seem to have been rigid, or unbending or pre-occupied with rules and regulations. Marcellin always believed that Mary, the mother of Jesus, was the perfect way to follow Jesus and this would have come from his mother and, most probably, his aunt. The Spirituality of the home was a gentle and accepting spirituality and this would have affected decisions made in the home.

An example of this, I have always thought, was the decision taken regarding Marcellin’s education. When Marcellin was sent to school, as a very young child, he was badly affected by the cruelty of the teacher towards another student. He went home and informed the family that he did not want to return to school. The family agreed to this and from that day, Marcellin stayed within the confines of the farm, but started up a small business of selling lambs, which was successful. This incident illustrates for me the type of home created by Marcellin’s parents. They would have listened to the young boy, seen his anxiety about the situation and made a decision. Marcellin witnessed the qualities of profound faith, quiet listening, understanding and hard work growing-up and he would carry these gifts with him into adulthood and share them with the first Brothers, who, in turn, have passed them onto countless people ever since.

We are the inheritors of these gifts and the challenge for us is to make them relevant to our boys in this new century. At this time, my prayer is for each of our precious boys in our care and I pray that Saint Marcellin and Mary, Our Good Mother, keeps each one safe throughout their lives.

A few items of news as Term 2 draws to a close:

My sincere thanks to you all: As the term draws to an end, may I express my sincere gratitude to each of you for what you have done to make Term 2 proceed so smoothly. Most importantly, however, is your presence. Quite often we emphasise ‘what is done’ but equally important is the daily presence of each member of staff, each student, each parent and each colleague. Thank you for everything and I wish you a very relaxing and safe holiday.

Drop-off in the mornings: Very soon parents will be unable to drive up and drop off their sons in the parking area behind the Junior School, so I would suggest that parents, who use this method, find an alternate plan. The amount of parking space has already diminished due to the new building site, so it’s becoming very dangerous. The best solution might be to drop your sons in Moola Road and the boys walk into the College grounds. Thank you for your assistance with this.


Junior School NewsBrisbane Independent Schools (BIS) Competition: Chess, Public Speaking and Debating. Marist College Junior School hosted this event on Tuesday 1 June and I wish to thank each boy who participated and represented the College so well. The visiting school was Brisbane Boys’ College. The details are:

Debating: “That we rely too heavily on the internet.” Team 1, which was the Affirmative, won the debate and the boys are congratulated on their achievement. The Speaker of the Night for Team 1 was Izaac Ellings. Congratulations, Izaac. Team 2, which was Negative, did not win the debate, but the boys performed very well and are congratulated. The Speaker of the Night for Team 2 was Liam Dale. Congratulations Liam. The final BIS Competition has been cancelled, due to All Hallows inability to provide a team. Our 2 teams will debate against each other in the Draney Theatre on Monday 21 June at 9.00am.

Public Speaking:Thank you to the following boys who represented the College in Public Speaking: Alfie Green (Year 6 Gold); Samuel Nilon (Year 6 Gold); Patrick Lewis (Year 6 Blue); Rory Davidson (Year 6 Red); Jack O’Connor (Year 6 Blue) and Oscar Cooney (Year 6 Red). Junior School Sport NewsJUnIoR SChooL SPoRT The C.I.C. Rugby and Soccer season is fast coming to an end; therefore I would like to thank the people who have made this season so successful in operation of the games, participation of the players and the on field performances.Firstly, I would like to thank the outstanding and dedicated coaching staff who have given up their time to help coach and direct our boys. As well, we have many parents who have volunteered their time to also help our boys learn the sport. Secondly, without the help and support of our fine contingent of referees, we would be unable to play the games. Each weekend these referees give of their valuable time to contribute to the proud Marist sports program, always upholding the values the school stands. Finally, I would like to thank the boys for participating in Term two sport. This year, the Junior School has seen an increase in participation levels in both Rugby and Soccer which will only enhance the tradition and culture of this fine College.

C.I.C CRoSS-CoUnTRY 2010 Our Cross Country squad should be commended for the effort and commitment they displayed throughout the whole season. We had a group of about 50 boys who regularly showed up for training on Monday and Wednesday morning. With a total squad of 38 picked it was unfortunate that some boys who contributed to training sessions and C.I.C Carnivals on Friday afternoon were unable to gain selection in the C.I.C Cross Country team. Special thanks to all boys who attended training sessions and Friday afternoon C.I.C Carnivals and the army barracks time trials. The CIC Cross-Country Championships were run in overcast conditions at Minnippi Parklands on Wednesday 2nd June.

This overall result is a testament to the level of dedication and exertion the boys displayed from the start of the season which obviously progressed throughout the duration of the season. All boys who were part of the 2010 Cross-Country squad should be congratulated, regardless of whether you were selected in the final CIC team or not, your contribution to the squad should not be understated. Well done to all the boys who contributed to the 2010 Cross-Country Program.

Before we headed off for the CIC Cross-Country Championships last Wednesday we presented our Cross- Country Age Champions. These were a result of the 5 lead-up runs, with runners receiving points for each run. First place received 20 points, second 18, all the way down to 2 points for 10th place. Big congratulations must go to the following boys who consistently performed throughout the lead-up events in the CIC season.

Junior School Sport NewsC.I.C AThLETICS 2010

The Athletics season is fast approaching and we would like to encourage as many boys as possible to attend the training sessions offered on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons throughout Term 3. There are many talented athletes in the Junior School and a few may not have even tried athletics before, so we look forward to a big season; discovering talent as well as developing it.

The aim this year is to encourage as many athletes as possible to ‘have a go’. An expert multi-events coach and former teacher in the Junior School Ms Krishna Stanton has been employed along with Mrs Anne Quill, Mr Matthew Green and Mr Jamie Brauer to implement an 8 week program encompassing sprints, hurdles, jumps, throws and middle distance. Ms Stanton’s philosophy is to focus on sprints, technique and strength to build a solid base which will help and is a requirement of all other events, i.e. the boys who would normally only try out for throws or jumps can benefit from sprint training as explosiveness is important in field events.

Week 1 of the program will begin first week back in Term 3 with an orientation week where we will gauge the level of interest for each event. Weeks 2 – 9 will be conducted on a rotational basis with the boys having the opportunity to do at least 2 events at each training session.

Participation and team spirit are what Marist College Ashgrove is about, so we look forward to a large turn out for our first week back next Term. Over the remaining couple of weeks this Term we will be trialling boys in all track and field events to come up with our nominations for the North-West District trials and also for the CIC training squad.

C.I.C BASKETBALL 2010

Basketball trials will commence for all Year groups over the next few weeks. Ashgrove will enter three Year 7 teams, three Year 6 teams and three Year 5 teams into the C.I.C. competition. A reminder to all parents of basketball players that there will be no transport provided by the College for any boy playing away from the College. Basketball fixtures occur on a Friday afternoon and alternate on a home and away basis. Basketball singlets will be provided to players, therefore no need to purchase any playing attire.

CIC Tennis Selection Process & Upcoming SeasonThere are 8 teams consisting of 4 players in each team. Teams 1 – 3 ranked on ability. Team 4 is only for Year 5 players however, if a year 5 player is good enough to beat players in other teams they can play in those teams. Teams 5 – 8 ranked on ability.

Effectively there is a list of players ranked 1 to 32. If a player ranked in 25th spot challenges a player in 10th

spot and wins, that winning player takes 10th spot and the loser drops down to 11th pushing everyone below down one spot. If the challenger loses nothing happens. As this process takes a very long time we use the whole of Term 2 to sort the boys into their rankings. A challenge consists of a one set match. First to six games, no tie breaks.

The 2010 season will commence on 24th July and will finish on the 11th September. The season will last for 8 weeks, with a weekend off for the Exhibition break. Matches will be played on a Saturday mornings from 8.00am - 11.30am. Games will be scheduled for home and away, so it is up to the individual to find transport to the away games. Car-pooling may be necessary.

Teams will be playing home and away in the following groups: Teams one, two, five and six Teams three, four, seven and eight For first two Saturdays our home venue will be at the College courts. Following this we will have a different home venue as the Senior School uses the College courts. This will be made known in the coming weeks.


MARIST WInTER SWIMMInG PRoGRAM

Students who have a keen interest in competitive swimming or wishing to keep up their fitness over the coming winter months are encouraged to join the Marist Ashgrove Winter Swimming Program, which is currently being held at Ashgrove State School pool. The pool is heated, and sessions are available Monday - Thursday afternoons from 3.30pm - 5.15pm, and also on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 6.00am - 7.30am.

InDIVIDUAL AChIEVEMEnTS

Congratulations to Charlie Renouf (6 Red) who has been selected in the Metropolitan North U/11 Rugby League Team which will compete at the State Championships in Aspley from July 5 – 9. We all wish Charlie the best of luck at these Championships and congratulate him on the achievement of representing his Region in Rugby League.

Ashgrove Sport From the Head of Sport

RUGBY & FOOTBALL This Saturday sees the penultimate round of the AIC competition verse traditional rivals St Laurence’s College. This home round fixture will be a fitting second last round as teams in all grades and both codes jostle for premiership positions. This round shaping very much like the ‘heritage’ round as the local rivalry between IONA College and Villanova will also be tested. In the 1st XV competition Ashgrove faces yet another test in a difficult run home. The Laurie’s side was beaten by Eddies who we have in the last round. A strong and character building win over a fast out of the blocks St Pat’s side is an indicator of just how much the team has matured. The side is still relying on either IONA or St Peter’s to cause an upset to keep their premiership hopes alive. One of the big challenges for the rugby program each week is the ability to officiate our B division and under matches. This weekend alone the College has to cover 24 games not covered by QRRA appointments. I like to acknowledge the following Parents and Old Boys for their continued support and availability to ref this season: Brad Smith, Damian O’Rourke, Peter Tregenza, Andrew Cole, Andrew Carmody, Mark Fairweather, John Carol, Simon Moore, Adam Uren, Sebastian Pelly and Joel Negline. It is also pleasing to note student refs Adam Nelson, Duncan Stephens and Brad Cox obtain their accreditation and begin ref appointments for the College. The 1st XI Football side is heading for a 3rd undefeated premiership; a result not achieved at this level of competition by any College in the AIC. Comprehensive and dominate victories in the 5 rounds of competition so far have set the side up for a big finish. With the World Cup kicking off this weekend the interest in football at a local level is very strong. The aggregate results will hinge on matches v Laurie’s this Saturday. The Uhlsport Cup competition is also progressing for the 1st XI with a second group match being played on Tuesday.

NB – All after school training should finish by 5pm: especially with light fading fast this time of the year. Students need to ensure they have arranged a suitable pick up time to avoid waiting in dark areas like the Flats. The A/H Reception is located next to the Health Centre and should be used by a student if there is a problem. Alternatively, students should wait at the bus sheds for collection.

ASHGROVE EAGLES - AFL The AIC division of the Independent Schools AFLQ competition will commence on the 19th July (week 2 / term 2). The competition caters for two teams per school: 14yrs and under and a 16yrs and under side. To begin the task of selecting and organizing teams the 16 yrs players will ‘sign on’ this Friday followed by the 14yrs ‘sign on’ on Friday 18th June. To be eligible players must have participated in term 1 or 2 sports for the College.


CROSS COUNTRY The annual inter‐House cross country race known as the Harold House Pursuit of the Eagle was run as part of Champagnat Day celebrations last Friday. As at time of publication official results were not yet published.
