CurriculumAtWrothamSchoolourcurriculumisdesignedtopromoteourethosofHighExpecta<ons,ChallengeandOpportunity.Weaimtocreateacurriculumthatmeetstheneedsofeverystudentwhilstofferingopporun<tytoexperience,enjoyandsucceedinawiderangeofsubjects.Webelievestronglyintheimportanceofbaciskeyskillssuchasliteracyandnumeracyandthattheseformthefounda<onforachievingprogressinallsubjectareasandimproveskillsthatfacilitatesocialmobilityandsuccessinadultlife.
Weofferanincreasinglyacademiccurriculumthatisdesignedtosupportarangeofabili<esandbalancesthiswithanappropriatemenuofvoca<onalqulaifica<ons.OurfocusisonprovidingIAGthatengagesstudentsinmakinginformedchoicesatKS4and5andchallengesstudentstoachieveandexceedpriorexpecta<ons.
Differen<a<onisakeyaspectofourcurriculumandcoursedelivery.AtWrothamSchoolweagreethatdifferen<a<onineachsubjectareaisthekeytoensuringallstudentsmakeandexceedexpectedprogress.
LowerthanexpectedLiteracyandNumeracyskillsonentryarerecognisedasabarriertogeneralcurriculumaccessforsomestudents.Wherestudentsareiden<fiedasbehindintheirprogressinMathsandEnglishweoffercatchupsessionstoquicklyimprovereading,wri<ngandnumeracyskills.ThesetakeplaceassoonaspossibleinKS3toensurethatstudentshavetheskillsneededtoaccessthecurriculumassoonaspossible.
Weemphasisethetransforma<onalpowerandimpactofcrea<vesubjectsandtheartsatKS3,4and5asavehiclefordevelopingemo<onalintelligence,confidence,resilienceandcommunica<onskills.Itisforthisreasonweplaceaclearemphasisonthesesubjectsatallstagesbutpar<cularlyatKS3.

Whyisassessmentimportant?
AtWrothamSchoolwebelieveitisimportanttomeasureandreportonallofourstudents’progressatkeypointsintheyear.Thisallowsustomonitorprogress,supportstudentstomoveforwardandtosharethisinforma<onwithparents.
Itisofthehighestimportancethatassessmentis:

PleasefindbelowanoverviewofchangestoassessmentatKS3:
- Wehaveanintroducedan‘allthroughschool’gradingsystemwhichmeansthatstudentsaregradedusingGCSEcriteriafromyear7inallsubjects.
- Eachstudenthasanindividual‘flightpath’whichmapsouttheirtargetgradesfortheendofeachacademicyear.Theflightpathissetusingthestudent’spriorabainmentatKS2(primaryschool).

- InKS4,aspartofourassessmentcycle,allsubjectswillreportonstudentprogresstowardstheirtargetgradeattwopointsduringtheyear.

TheAssessmentProcess
WrothamSchoolfullyendorsesthebeliefthatassessmentisoneofthemostpowerfultoolsinencouragingandmanagingprogress.WecollectdataattwopointsinKS3andKS4duringtheacademicyearandusethisdatatoinformplanning,interven<on,feedbackandimprovementstrategy.InKS5dataiscollectedonatermlybasisandisusedfortargebedinterven<onandac<onplanning.
Asaschoolwebelievethatassessmentshouldbetransparent,clearandalwaysfocussedonencouragingimprovementandfocus.
Markingandassessmentisusedtogivediagnos<ccommentsonhowtoimprovework.Supportisthenprovidedtohelpstudentsimprovebeforestar<ngtheprocessagain.Werefertothisas“levelling-up”asstudentsaregivenasecondchancetoreposndtomarkingandassessmenttoimprovetheirworkandtheirabainmentlevel.

Markingandqualityofworkismon<oredregularlyandthroughlyatWrotham.Modera<onsessionstakeplaceinleaduptoeverydatadropandincludescru<nyofbooksandassessmentsatKS3,4and5toobserveandmonitorthequalityofmarking,assessment,presenta<onandlevelofchallenge.MarkingismonitoredbyHODsandthroughlessonobserva<onsandlearningwalks.HODsfeedbacktheirfindingstobothstaffandtheirLineManager.
MeasuringProgress
FromSeptember2016weareusingourgenerated‘flightpaths’tosetchallengingtargetsforallyeargroups.Studentprogresswillbemeasuredagainsttheflightpathtargets.TheflightpathsarecreatedbasedonKS2averagepointscoresandforKS5thesearebasedonGCSEscores.
