By far the most likely source is via email. Either: - An attachment, which contains malicious code Or - A link to a website, where an inviting link is actually an instruction to download malicious code. V4 17/02/2012 Ubestree Ltd - Registered in England and Wales No. 7556207.15 Always, always think twice before clicking on something in an email. But viruses are NOT your biggest risk ! Slide 17 Keeping it safe Internet Scams The biggest risk to your (financial) health is an internet scam. These are mostly via email, but may also come via the telephone. Im phoning from Microsoft Support. Weve had a report that your computer has been infested with a virus. Its sending out security reports, and will soon close down ! Im here to help you out Can you just. Slide 25 Keeping it safe Password management Dont use obvious passwords..please Standard minimum recommendation: o At least 8 random characters, o both letters and numbers, o both upper and lower case Use different passwords for different sites. - Especially financial or personal sites Let you Internet browsers remember passwords only if your PC is 100% physically secure. Keep your passwords in a very secure place Better still, use a password management program. V4 17/02/2012 Ubestree Ltd - Registered in England and Wales No. 7556207.24 Slide 26 Keeping it safe Password Management programmes Why ? Quick protected access to multiple different passwords Basic function: Store usernames and passwords for key applications and websites Other functions store associated info (first school?) Recommendation: PWsafe - Stores Username, Password, URL, Notes, etc, etc - Copy username or password to clip-board - Auto-type facility - Can auto-generate passwords (according to changeable rules) - Entries can be grouped (e.g. financial sites) - Find facility (useful when you have 200+ passwords...) - Backup is easy V4 17/02/2012 Ubestree Ltd - Registered in England and Wales No. 7556207.25 Slide 27 V4 17/02/2012 Ubestree Ltd - Registered in England and Wales No. 7556207. 26 Slide 28 Insuring against disaster. V4 17/02/2012 Ubestree Ltd - Registered in England and Wales No. 7556207. 27 Back up ? Slide 29 Insuring against disaster The Basic Truth If you use PCs a lot, then sooner or later: Your PC (hard disc) will fail, or You will accidentally destroy important files, (maybe complete folders), or You will accidentally completely destroy a PC. If you use a Laptop, then add You may have it stolen. V4 17/02/201228 Slide 30 Insuring against disaster. Backup Principles Make sure youve got a system back-up (a one-off action, usually) Then Back-up your files regularly - Keep your files where you can find them o Documents, Pictures, Mail, Music, etc - Regularly copy them to other media V4 17/02/2012 Ubestree Ltd - Registered in England and Wales No. 7556207.29 CD USB Stick External Hard Disk Network backup Slide 31 Insuring against disaster. Practice Using a backup programme makes life easier - Defines whats backed up, and when scheduling - Avoids re-copying files which havent changed. Traditional approach (simplified) - First time - Full backup - Afterwards back up changed files Simple approach: - Manually sync your files with a copy on other media o By definition, unchanged files are not re-copied Options - Portable media with a backup programme and off-site storage if possible (protection against fire and theft) - Network backup if secure & free Recommendation: External Hard disk + Windows backup V4 17/02/2012 Ubestree Ltd - Registered in England and Wales No. 7556207.30 Slide 32 V4 17/02/2012 Ubestree Ltd - Registered in England and Wales No. 7556207. 31 Slide 33 Keeping it Clean Disk Fragmentation When first written to disk, files are contiguous meaning that each file is in one lump.... As they are used, files can get fragmented meaning that pieces of them become scattered around the disk.... So the disk unit has to work harder - to find the data, it must run around the disk collecting the bits together. Since disk reads are a mechanical operation, this takes time, and slows down the rate at which files are read. V4 17/02/2012 Ubestree Ltd - Registered in England and Wales No. 7556207.32 Slide 34 Keeping it Clean Defragmentation The answer: Windows defragmentation tool Windows Start button:...All programs...Accessories...System Tools...Disk defragmenter The good news: 1. With modern large-capacity disk units, fragmentation is much less of a problem. 2. Windows Vista and Windows 7 both have automatic (scheduled) defragmentation turned on by default. V4 17/02/2012 Ubestree Ltd - Registered in England and Wales No. 7556207.33 Slide 35 Keeping it Clean Disk Cleanup Disks get cluttered with temporary files which take up space. The answer: Windows Disk Cleanup tool Windows Start button:...All programs...Accessories...System Tools...Disk cleanup V4 17/02/2012 Ubestree Ltd - Registered in England and Wales No. 7556207.34 Slide 36 Keeping it Clean Registry Cleanup Care needed a bit more advanced.... The Registry is a system file which contains lots of information about how programmes should run. - Windows programmes add, change and delete information in the Registry constantly. - But Windows is poor at cleaning up the Registry o The Registry gets cluttered with stuff. o This makes it big, disorganised, and slow to read Many good System cleaners are available o Usually handle both disk and registry cleanup. Recommendation: CCleaner Version 3 (free) NOTE FOR BTINTERNET / MCAFEE SUBSCRIBERS McAfee provides a PC Optimisation capability, which includes a cleanup tool.
