  • Spring is in the air, and it is certainly welcome after one of the coldest winters I can remember. March Madness and Major League Baseballs opening day are already behind us, so with the Masters just a few days away, other telltale signs of the new seasonwarmer weather and blooming flowers not excludedare upon us.

While I believe there are more among us who long for summer in the midst of winter than those who dont, its still hard to recall such great a consensus of folks pining for balmier days. This I gauge this from the upswing in ticket sales for V3s annual tent party on the turn at Atlanta Steeplechase. (On sale until the event date, April 24.)

In the three years we have thrown this little shindig, we have used every ticket on the shelf and each time have been forced to order more. Even with the economy in turmoil last year, people still packed the V3 tent to take in the revelry that has become synonomous with our growing company.

I cant quite put my finger on the true reason our tickets still manage to sell out weeks in advance, but my guess is that, somehow, Steeplechase serves as a light at the end of the tunnel from the waning, cold, hard winter months. The elaborate hats, colorful cocktail dresses, seersucker jackets and ear-to-ear smiles are the true ushers of spring in my eyes, and the hosts are the rolling green fields at Kingston Downs.

So, I guess its official: Spring is here, ladies and gentlemen, and this year we at V3 Magazine offer you all our version of a (refined) southern revival to celebrate the seasons arrivalon the 24th, of course.

  • When Bush 43 extended a hand to the failing U.S. auto industry in 2008, Ford Motor

Company was the only player among The Big Three to politely decline. Now, just two

years later, local lots such as COURTESY FORD LINCOLN MERCURY are seeing increased sales and a potential re-staking of the

    automakers claim to greatness

  • he American auto industry is still struggling to emerge from one of the worst crises in its more than

100-year history. In fact, the past couple of decades have not been altogether positive for an industry that once led the world in automotive production. The Big Three of General Motors, Chrysler and Ford have seen better days. Foreign competitors Toyota and Honda have been successful in not only attracting a substantial share of the U.S. market, but also in building U.S.-based production facilities, making them directly (and indirectly) responsible for creating hundreds of thousands of domestic jobs.

In a way, these Japanese giants have risen above their national origins, blurring the lines as to what is considered a domestic or foreign-made car, as thousands of their vehicles roll off the assembly line every year in states like West Virginia, Texas and Alabama. But Ford, GM and Chrysler, companies that made their mark by way of American ingenuity and hard work, are still part of a powerful industrial legacy in which we as Americans take tremendous pride.

As the damage caused by the 2008 recession began to be assessed, it looked as though each of the Big Threes namesakes were on the brink of collapse. Thousands upon thousands of jobs, including those once filled through hundreds of subsidiary and/or industry dependent companies,

could possibly lay in ruins. Though spared, GM and Chrysler would

later accept over $13 billion in federal funding from the government, hence finding themselves in Chapter 11 limbo. The United States would eventually become GMs majority shareholder, and Chrysler would find Italian shareholders in Fiat. Ford, though financially bruised, would survive the crisis and end 2008 with losses amounting to $14.8 billioni.e., the worst year in its 105-year history.

But now, with 2008 long in its rearview and a bang-up 2009 rebuilding year that proved to be one of its best to date, local sales associates says this show of strength will no doubt continue into 2010. And having seen its U.S. market share increase to 17 percent this Februaryup 3 percent from this time last yearThey may well be right. One Rome based dealership, Courtesy Ford Lincoln Mercury of

Rome, has seen a gradual but steady rise in new car sales over the past year, a trend employees attribute to Fords improved engineering and to their own dealerships commitment to quality service. Though some disgruntled consumers turned to Ford following GM and Chryslers acceptance

of billions in federal aid, Courtesy dealer principal Kim Leggett doesnt see backlash against competitors as the true harbinger of increased sales. Instead, Leggett believes that Fords commitment in recent years to design better vehiclesin spite of its financial difficultieshas led to its recent resurgence.

Fords products in the past few years, in terms of quality and safety, are highly ranked, says Leggett. They made the decision around 2006 to revamp the company and offer the consumers more options, especially in terms of fuel economy, and they are reaping the benefits now And it certainly helps business on our end.

According to the experts, Ford offered an impressive lineup of award-winning vehicles for 2009 and 2010. The redesigned Ford Fusion, which first debuted in 2006, won this years coveted Motor Trend Car of The Year Award, and the Fusion Hybrid was named North American Car of the Year. Sales of the Fusion have increased 116 percent since February 2009.

As has been the case for the for the past 33 years, Fords F-Series was Americas best-selling truck in 09, with the F-150 receiving Motor Trend Truck of the Year honors.

The model that perhaps received the

most buzz this year, however, was the sixth-generation Taurus. The new Taurus is not even the same car, Leggett claims. They named it Taurus, but thats as far as it goes. It is competing with a much higher end luxury car than in the past. The sleek, full-sized sedan was named Car of the Year

    T

  • by Esquire, a magazine that one wouldnt associate with the no-frills Taurus of old.

The 2011 line of Fords will also offer up a few head-turners when they hit streets in coming months. The Ford Transit Connect, the popular, Euro-style commercial van voted 2010 North American Truck of the Year, will include a fully electric model for 2011, appealing to local businesses such as florists, plumbers and handymen who have predictably low-mileage daily routes and can benefit from overnight battery charging.

The return of the Ford Fiesta to U.S. roadways will also boost Fords eco-friendly stature with consumers. The 40 miles per gallon Fiesta has been a huge success in Europe and Asia, and with an attractive new design

concept and increased options, Ford expects the Fiesta to mirror its overseas success in an stateside market that appears to be warming up to smaller, more fuel-efficient automobiles. You tend to think of the sub-compact car as a lower-end vehicle, but thats not the case with the Fiesta, says Leggett. there are standard features and available options that normally are only offered in luxury vehicles.

Courtesy staffers say Ford has consistently provided them with quality products that, for the most part, can easily sell themselves based on appearance and performance alone. But to their credit, this local dealership makes it a point to offer consumers a vast range of services that only makes the decision to strap into a new Ford (or pre-owned vehicle) that much more tempting. Our body shop is probably the best kept secret in Rome, says Jon Headrick, fixed operations director for Courtesy. We are the only franchised dealer in town that has a body shop, and its fully backed by Ford. I think it says a lot about our

commitment to our customers and the cars that we sell.

Another post-purchase service that Courtesy Ford Lincoln Mercury of Rome has to offer is Quick Lane, located across Dodd Boulevard from the Courtesy showroom. Quick Lane provides fast while you wait, maintenance services including oil changes, brake repairs, as well as a huge inventory of tires to choose from. Were

going outside the box, not only working with Ford Lincoln Mercury vehicles, but all makes and models with no appointment necessary. Quick Lane has been a big avenue for developing both sales and service relationships based on customer convenience. says Headrick.

Courtesy Ford is also seeing increased interest in its stock of Ford Certified Pre-Owned vehicles, which are purported to meet a rigid 169-point

inspection before finding their way to the sales lot. From wiper blades to brake pads, skilled Courtesy service employees are said to inspect every conceivable aspect of a pre-owned car, ensuring that only the most qualified and reliable vehicles are re-sold.

If one thing is certain, it is that the next few years are going to be extremely crucial in the rebirth of the U.S. automotive industry. As new regulations are imposed, consumer tastes evolve, and technological innovation witnesses further milestones amidst a fractured, yet recovering economy, winners and losers will no doubt be determined based on their own merit.

Some companies have faltered in this new phase of the race. Ford, on the other hand, believes it is once again inching its way to the forefront of American car-making, relying on forward-thinking product lines that are designed to be best in class for quality, safety, and fuel economy. You can see all these exciting new models for yourself, at Courtesy Ford Lincoln Mercury of Rome. VVV

  • o little has the Icelandic language changed since the days of the Vikings, that many modern day Icelanders can

still read historical documents dating back 1,000 years. To keep the language purei.e., free of foreign wordsan official government agency exists to create Icelandic words for new inventions and terms.

So, I ask: Is there an Icelandic term for yall? Probably not, says my Icelandic friend. However, he supposes they could make one.

The official language of Iceland is of course Icelandic. Yet, most Icelanders speak English rather fluently, or can at least understand it, even with the added difficulty of a Southern drawl. Our token word, yall, was instantly recognizable to just about everyone we met on the island due to a lovely invention called American television. But, rather than the double-take I often receive stateside when this word slips out in the company of non-Southerners, my native tongue was welcomed and appreciated.

In the company of my dear friend, Marie Edwards, I traveled to Iceland in February

to prepare for this summers Southern Treks adventure (see V3 October 2007, November 2008, et al). Prior to our trip, I had several preconceived notionsmisconceptions, actuallyabout Iceland, just as I have found many others to also believe.

Isnt Iceland freezing? Well, no. Is there even anything to do there? Actually, yes. Now, I would like to clear up these

falsehoods in more detail and share some interesting findings from our excursion to this wonderful and fascinating place.

Probably the worst part about Iceland is its name. Surprisingly, Iceland has a relatively mild climate due to its position in the Gulf Stream. Icelands capitol, Reykjavik, is typically warmer than New York City in the winter. And, if I had to guess, I would say Rome probably saw more snow this year than many parts of Iceland.

But they dont call Iceland the land of fire and ice for nothing. It has five glaciers covering 4,500 miles of land, on an island that is only 103,000 square kilometers total.

Three of Icelands glaciers are considered to be the largest in Europe, and the best part is you can actually walk on them, which is something our Southern Treks adventurers will get to do this coming summer.

Growing out of several glaciers are volcanoes, and a few of them still spit lava. Currently, there are 15 active volcanoes in Iceland, and the most famous, Mount Hekla, rates among the most active in the world.

Despite one-ninth of the country being covered in ice, you can still find quite a bit of free flowing water. Over 10,000 waterfalls rush into rivers and streams here, and two of Europes most powerful waterfalls, Gullfoss and Dettifoss, can be found just outside the capitol. Some of Icelands waterfalls tell stories, like the one behind Childrens Fallsnamed for a tale of two children who fell to their deaths from a stone archway into glacial waters. Others appear to emerge from under the lava fields, like the aptly named Lava Falls. In fact, there are waterfalls that still have no official titles because there are simply too many to bother with to name them all.

    S

SO, I ASK: IS THERE AN ICELANDIC TERM FOR YALL? PROBABLY

NOT, SAYS MY ICELANDIC FRIEND. HOWEVER, HE SUPPOSES THEY

    COULD MAKE ONE.

And we are not talking about just any regular old hot pool, either. The Blue Lagoon is quite possibly the biggest and most beautiful you are likely to see. Rising out of miles of dull, moss-covered, petrified lava, sits sparkling blue-green water atop a white silica mud base. Talk about an oasis in a strange desert.

Something every Southern woman understands is the need for a good pampering, and that is exactly what you get when you visit Icelands Blue Lagoon. A soak in the massive geothermal pool can even help to cure skin problems such as psoriasis.

Treat yourself to a mud mask during the soak?

Yes, please. Steam bath and lava cave? Dont mind if I do. No, not every town in Iceland has a Blue

Lagoon, per se, but they do have outdoor swimming pools that are open year round.

Would you believe that outdoor swimming is the most popular sport in Iceland? This is true simply because the outdoor pools are made bearable by the heat

of geothermal power. Even the swimming area on the beach in Reykjavik is heated by geothermal power.

Actually, the majority of the country is run on geothermal power. Giant cylinders can be seen around the country, acting as housing units, as can the miles of pipeline that run alongside the highway, carrying boiling hot water to towns and cities directly from the source.

The biggest and most powerful hot spring in Europe is found in western Iceland, with a flow rate of 50 scalding hot gallons of water per second at 200 degrees. (They say an egg can be fried on the hot pipes in just two seconds.)

That being said, steam, whether it comes in the form of hot pools or geysers, can be spotted all around the country. Reykjavik literally means smoky bay, and was named so by the first official settler in 1870 after he saw steam and mist rising from the ground. That first settler, a Norseman, then began a long, rich Viking historysomething that

modern Icelanders are still very proud of. Viking museums and historical sites pop

up around every corner in most Icelandic municipalities. You can even walk on the original front steps at the home of historys two most famous Vikings, Leif Erickson (who was the real discoverer of America years before Christopher Columbus) and his

father, Eric the Red. Or perhaps youd like to partake in a traditional Viking meal at any number of nearby establishments. (Just make sure to forego the rotten shark).

Speaking of food, Iceland is becoming known around the world for its freshnot at all rottenand highly organic cuisine. Being a remote island, fresh seafood is available in abundance and the pollution-free water and air make for excellent fare. In the summer months, sheep are free to roam the countryside (sometimes at the

Icelandic cheese, butter and skyr, a yogurt-like substance, are deemed pure enough that they are now being exported to Whole Foods locations in the U.S.

Still, the favorite snack food of Iceland is the hot dog, which explains the line outside of the small wiener stand just off Reykjaviks harbor. If you get one, dont expect American-style fries to arrive on the side. Icelandic potatoes are small, maybe a tad bigger than our potatoes, because they are the only crop grown outdoors during a relatively short growing season. This renders the fries much smallerand probably healthierthan our own.

Just as the potatoes are the only crop grown outside, Icelandic horses are the only domesticated animals to stay outside year round. Over 100,000 Viking horses (as they are more commonly known in Iceland) call the island home, and many are exported each year. Once they are exported, they

are never allowed to return. This practice has allowed the breed to remain pure for over a millennium.

Of course, this would imply that horseback riding is a popular sport in Iceland, but there are many others. Hiking, biking, whitewater rafting, ice climbing, snowmobiling and caving are just a few of

the adrenaline-pumping activities available to visitors. Because of the mild climate, lack of pollution and abundance of open space (only 310,000 people live in Iceland, and most of them live in Reykjavik), there is plenty of reason to play outdoors.

In the summer, Iceland has nearly 24 hours of daylight, so you can do just about anything you want under the midnight sun. Golf under the midnight sun on one of Icelands 50 golf courses, or maybe a lazy twilight fishing for trout in one of the countrys gorgeous, gleaming streams.

Theres deep-sea fishing, too. Fishing is Icelands largest export, so its likely you will get lucky. But, if you want the biggest catch, you will have to get in line for a whole different type of license. By biggest catch, I mean whales. The Icelandic government reintroduced whaling in 2006, much to the dismay of animal activists and popular whale-watching tour companies. The whaling ships can be seen in Reykjaviks harbor, directly across the boardwalk from the whale-watching boats.

We were willing to bet their captains do not talk much.

In summary, if you can imagine yourself cruising through an iceberg lagoon, taking a dip in a natural hot pool, or even hiking across miles of glaciers, then Iceland is the place your for. The best part about it is that it is much closer than you think. Its just a five-hour flight from Boston, making it our closest European neighbor, and there couldnt be a better time to visit than now. Like the U.S., Iceland is going through some rather difficult economic times. Their economy crashed several years ago and has yet to begin a true recovery. The U.S. dollar remains most welcome in the lions share of Icelandic establishments, just as our yall is. So, to that I say, Come on over, yall! VVV

Discover why, when it comes to the diagnosis and treatment of sleep-related problems in the year 2010, the dedicated and determined staff

hen the staff at Floyd Medicals Sleep Disorders Center, accredited by the American

Sleep Disorders Association, devoted themselves to the renovation of the facility just last year, no detail was too small for a place dedicated to the fascinating study of sleep.

We worked with the architects and designers to make the center a very soothing place, says polysomnographic technologist and Sleep Disorder Center (SDC) coordinator, Jill Hawkins. I spent a lot of time with them [discussing layout and color scheme] because we wanted it all to be calming and relaxing. They came to me and asked how we wanted the new department to be laid out. We laid it out based on noise issues, technician needs and, of course, patient needs.

Have you ever spent hours counting the minutes til dawn? Have you counted one too many sheep? What about those restless legs?

Most of us have suffered from some sort of sleep-related problem at one time or another. Maybe weve missed out on some much needed R&R, a successful attempt to drop a bad habit, or have even taken some medicine to help us out. But sometimes a restful night is harder, or even impossible, to get. And this isnt a problem that can be easily ignored; the effects of lack of sleep are more pervasive than you might think.

Sleep is so important because we spend a third of our lives sleeping, and it affects how you spend the other two-thirds of your life, Hawkins explains. It affects your health, emotions, relationships, and so much more.

The SDC at Floyd Medical Center is certainly equipped to help a person finally experience a good nights sleep. Their night technicians, fully trained in the fields of respiratory and sleep-related disorders, observe their patients bedtime behavior from a spacious room across a large hall. Even the halls length was specifically designed to limit disturbance to a sleeping patient.

The Centers monitoring technology isnt large and cumbersome. In fact, at first glance, it is deceptively simplistic. But once the data screens pop up, it is apparent that only registered personnel could begin to interpret

the symbols, lines and patterns streaking across the monitor.

During a sleep study, a patient can rest assured that each of the following is being carefully observed and monitored in order to find the core problem: Brain wave and muscle activity, heart rate, eye movement, breathing, blood-oxygen levels, leg movement, body position, snoring, sleep-talking, and chin position. (According to SDC staffers, the position of the chin can determine whether or not a person is awake.)

And what if a sleep study participant does wake up and needs to use the restroom? Although he or she is connected to a number of wires, which transmit the needed information, the connection is easily removed.

The technicians watch the patient on video through their computers, says Hawkins, so if they see any abnormal behavior, such as the patient trying to get up or [if he or she] waves for their attention, they can see. And all those wires connected to the patient are going into this one box. She points to the device seen on pages 36-37. So they can just disconnect the patient from the box to allow them to move around, and while they are connected, the length of the wires lets them toss and turn freely as they sleep.

Some of the amenities offered to SDC patients are convenient closets, bariatric chairs and beds, flat-panel televisions, Sleep Number brand bedsall in a refined, hotel-esque setting. It is a look and feel very different from the hospital environment just outside the hallway. We have tried to make the Center as homey as possible, Hawkins says. We want our patients to feel more like they are at a hotel than a hospital.

But there is even more to the Center than meets the eye. Hawkins points a second time: Up there is the camera [we use to] observe the patient. The microphone and intercom system are right here [on the nightstand], which picks up any sound throughout the room.

Hawkins then explains the process of a sleep disorder diagnosis. The first night [we perform what] is called a diagnostics sleep study. Its purpose is to determine if a patient has any type of sleep disorder, whether it is sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, or any one of the many disorders. Then, he or she would come back in to go over their results with the doctor. The doctor determines what

is needed to treat the disorder; treatment may be medication. Most of the time, there is no need to spend another night at the center. But, depending on the disorder, sometimes more information is required.

Anyone with concerns about their own sleeping patterns and habits is encouraged to contact the Floyd SDC. Staffers advise that if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, you may benefit from a sleep study: regular difficulty sleeping, remaining

tired after at least 7 hours of sleep, and/or a reduced or impaired ability to perform regular daily activities. People with certain health problems and/or taking certain types of medication may be more prone to sleep disturbances, as well.

We average around 40 sleep study patients a month; 80 percent are adults, says Hawkins. We just started the pediatric sleep studies in the fall, and are gradually seeing

Whether a child or an adult, this staff appears eager to help. If it is determined that the patient does not have a disorder, but merely suffers from insomnia, they will still try to correct the issue. Well help, says Hawkins matter-of-factly. The main thing with insomnia is to determine what is causing it. It could be [a short-term or long-term disorder], so its important to talk with a doctor to figure out what the problem is, the persons history, and how best to treat it.

Dr. Jeff Thompson, director of the Floyd SDC, says seeing the change in a patient once they are able to sleep is the most interesting and satisfying part of the job. classic was first seen on the back of its designer, French tennis great Ren The Alligator Lacoste, as he gracefully demolished his competition on the courts of Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

Since its creation in the 1920s, the polo has been the sporting shirt of

tennis enthusiasts, golfers, cricketers and, of course, polo players. But, as everyone knows, these threads have also become one

of the more common articles of clothing seen in the western world. From frat row Friday nights to church pew Sundays, T

board rooms to BBQs, the polo is a safe yet stylish choice for just about anyonegender notwithstanding.

The polo is not necessarily a wearable palate of self expression like its country cousin, the t-shirt. It just doesnt roll like that. Instead, as Lacoste first did with his alligator emblem, designers tend to leave their most distinguishing mark over the left breast, branding the shirt with a small embroidered logo. Be it a polo player,

penguin or golden bear, the unchanging label of a designer has become his or her most valuable marketing tool.

However, for Rome native, Darlington School alum and clothing entrepreneur, John

McElrath, this styling point of the polo shirt is where he believes the collared classic has become stale. Everything in the market is pushing one emblem or idea, he says. We decided it would be nice if you could create images or logos that people wouldnt have to buy into, but that could be something that represented [themselves] and would identify with their likes, hobbies or traditions.

Essentially, this was the idea that later gave birth to State Traditions, McElrath and co-founder Keith Browns start-up apparel line based out of Birmingham, Ala. Staying within the

parameters of the traditional polo, State Traditions has set out to tweak the idea of branding, allowing the consumer more freedom to express oneself via the shirts rather conservative template.

The company offers a host of colors in its high-quality, pima cotton polo line, and provides customers with their choice of American state emblems to act

as the shirts logo, with the option of any additional imagery that may align with a specific customers interests. A hunting dog, a trout or a peach are just a few of the options available for those with ties to Georgia. Themes for Tennesseeans include an acoustic guitar (paying homage to Nashville); for Kentucky, the classic image of a racehorse, among others, to show off what folks from bluegrass country are all about.

McElrath and Brown have also designed what McElrath considers to be State Traditions signature line of polos, the Traditional. Each state has a traditional image, that being the state outline itself with the flag inside the state borders, he explains. Thats something we can use across the board with any state.

State Traditions has another popular collection in the Gameday shirt, a polo geared toward college sports enthusiasts who want to show off their school colors. A maroon emblem of Alabama on white, for

instance, is perfect for Saturday afternoons in Tuscaloosa, while a burnt orange outline of the Lone Star State may serve to restore some pride for Longhorns fans after that second place finish last fall.

It may be Manifest Destiny for State Traditions as the Southern born company spreads across the nation, state by state, and McElrath is excited about the work that it will take to continue expanding his company. With most states in the Southeast already covered, State Traditions is hoping to stretch its brand to represent all 50 states, with both the Traditional and Gameday collections, as well as the customizable polos.

We love the challenge of taking on new images and logos that people relate to, says

McElrath. There have been a handful of images we have developed upon request from Alabama, Minnesota, Georgia. If we can get a foothold in each state and there is a demand, and we can find the themes and images that relate to folks in that state, we would love to represent all 50.

Business has been picking up steadily ever since State Traditions released its first shirts in the summer of 2007, and it is now busy expanding in both inventory and territory. In addition to the hundreds of options available in its line of high-end polo shirts, Traditions has begun offering accessory items such as hats, visors, koozies and, yes, even t-shirts. The Birmingham clothier, aside from its online shop, is now selling its goods through a number of fine retailers across the state of Alabama, as well as in Athens, Ga. and Charleston, S.C.

Locally, you can get a firsthand taste of State Traditions fine line of polos (et al) at this months Atlanta Steeplechase, held at Kingston Downs. The 2010 event will be McElraths second year touting the State

Traditions brand thereabouts. We are hoping to have a little bit more of

a presence at this years Steeplechase, says McElrath, and [we will have a number of items to hand out] as giveaways, marketing pieces and for sale. It should be fun.

If you cant catch the Steeplechase, State Traditions polos and accessories can be ordered online at StateTraditions.com. And if your favorite state isnt yet available, let John know what you are looking for. (New Jersey might have to wait awhile.)

Many have never quite understood how a Georgia Bulldogs fan could, in good conscience, wear a Lacoste shirt. But for those conflicted fans and others like them, State Traditions would like to remember that you have other options. INSIDE&OUT

have attended many weddings and many funerals in my life thus far. I have attended only one birth. On a starry

Christmas night, no less. There comes a time in life when you

suddenly realize you are attending more funerals than weddings. Even more striking is that moment when it hits you that these funerals are not for your parents friends. They are for your friends. Maybe even men and women in whose sleeping faces you can still see remnants of the impish boy or towheaded girl of your childhood.

This is the instant when the ritual aspects of both passages (the lighting of a memory candle at a wedding; the procession of robed vergers and high-held sacred crosses at Episcopal rites) assume their place in the hierarchy of events. Sometimes they act as an emotional lifeboat in a ceremony that could otherwise storm over us.

Each of these three life eventsbirth, marriage, deathis a rite of passage cloaked in ritual and reverence. The type of ritual matters less than the meaning it conveys: This passage matters. This change in our social structure is something we must assemble to honor.

Rituals are the gossamer ties that bind us together in the eternal circle, which bends and evolves, but rarely breaks. We are that circle. We, the human family.

I have never had the line between these three life ritesbirth, marriage, deathdrawn so directly and eloquently as it

was drawn for me at the memorial service for my friend Lisa Tunnell of Atlanta.

Margaret Elise Martin Tunnell. Wife of Spencer, who loved her utterly. Daughter of Margaret Martin, who gave her life. Daughter also to the late Thomas Martin,

who gave her one of his kidneys years ago.We should all begin and end our lives as

grounded in love and family as Lisa Tunnell was. What a difference it could make to our world to have so many loved children; so many empowered, beloved wives. Imagine the force for good that could come from that much love.

I knew Lisa for almost 20 years but knew only some of her history. I never knew about

Dartmouth, the University of Virginia MBA, the lineage dating back to the Colonial era, her work with the Academy Theatre.

I knew of her enormous strength as a professional during the blink of time she served as president of the Junior League of Atlanta, steering the last days of the True Grits book project. I knew Id never seen a woman so loved by her husbandnevermind her friends. I knew that she had skin like the inside of a babys wrist and that she loved being alivevalued being alivemore than anyone I ever met.

The Reverend Geoffrey M. St. J. Hoare saw that in her, too. His words made me keenly aware that Lisas memorial service was, in the truest sense, the bookend to her wedding ceremony. Some of the same people, themes, and readings were used in both.

Because, in the end, both services were, as this wise man once put it, celebrations

of love: Effective, chosen, conscious, committed love. If you sense that what sustained Lisa was a steely will in the service of love, you would not be wrong.

I saw this same steely will in the service of love on that glorious Christmas night in 1997 when I attended the birth of Naomi Sellers, daughter of Chip and Mary Beth, blessed friends who shared with me the gift of their childs birth because they knew I

I was humbledand remain so these years laterby the experience. We were in Buckhead, less than a mile from a great hospital. Mary Beth was a nurse and in excellent health. The signs and augurs were good for a home birth until the midwifes assistant had car trouble. I was pressed into service.

Hot, wet washcloths soothed aching muscles. Prayers between pains. Back rubs and neck massages and gentle kisses from Chip. Bible verses adapted by me to the situation: Lo, though I walk through the Valley of Labor, I shall fear no pains.

Mary Beth worked hard. She rested hard. She prayed hard. She wore knee socks and a cute little top. She became more beautiful as the evening wore on.

Just after midnight, when Naomi first opened her eyes, I was there. The room was small with heat, tight with struggle, filled with triumph, protected by God. She looked past the pink of her mothers thigh (it still trembling with the effort of birth) and caught on a face. Her fathers. Smile-split, sweat-weary, love-flushed. What passed between them was as simple as it was profound:

Hello, its me. Ive been waiting for you my whole life.

When Naomi first heard her mothers voice, I was there.

Blessings on you in the name of God, she whispered. Long life to you in the name of Jesus Christ.

It was a whisper with the power of generations in it. Those words are not just Naomis birthright. They will resonate in her heart all the days of her life.

Just as other words with that same intent so obviously resonated in the heart of Lisa Tunnell. The love she walked inthat all encompassing will to love, which radiated from herwas the birthright of Lisa Tunnell.

Here is that place youve been hoping for: The place in the what if mist where these two stories converge.

A short time after Naomis birth, I began to wonder about the similarities between birth and death. For Naomi, her birth had to seem as deaththe end of existence as she had known it. There was pain, fear, chaos, darknessand then light. She could not have known that on the other side of all that were four people waiting in the light to love her. And yet there we were.

And if mere mortals can manage such a thing, what beautiful beings and wonderful love just might be waiting on the other side of births mirror imagethis thing what we call death? VVV

    CENTS&SENSIBILITY

y fantasy is to be reincarnated in 50 years (or to still be alive

and able to comprehend in 50 years, which is somewhat more viable) so I can read what the perspective of time has lent to the current economic crisis. Perspective does not come in the moment, despite the efforts of hollering heads and opinion pundits to the contrary.

This stuff requires study. It took, understandably, more than a year for official analysts to declare that this recession began in 2007. (Pick your month. Many indicators point to the fall. But new car sales were down all spring and summer in 2007, usually the season when dealers trump the winter doldrums.) Now we are left to wonder if a recovery has begun (indicators keep going up and then dipping) or when a recovery will begin. Spring of 2009 was once predicted. Then spring of 2010, which is now, and now you read 2011. We are in unfamiliar territory.

But economists do generally agree that construction (too much housing inventory) and bad lending practices (foreclosures equals more inventory) linked us into this mess. That affects people who drive nails, people who paint, people who sell concrete, people who run forklifts, and many more. And that affects jobs. And that starts the domino effect.

Now, foreclosures are increasing again. That wont stop, but it will continue to dent new home construction, already in a long slump, as people look for homes at a discount, if at all.

It perhaps wont hit the Rome area as hard, according to Dr. R. Bruce Jones, professor of economics at Georgia Highlands College.

The Rome market hasnt been as adversely affected by foreclosures as Atlanta, Jones says. (Foreclosure notices in metro Atlanta reached a record high in March, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.) Our market is not quite as liquid as theirs, Jones says. Also, I think the local banks have done a better job with mortgages because they know their customers. Similarly, though we have some real estate speculation, its not the hundreds-of-units variety that larger markets have.

As Ive talked to business owners or sales personnel in recent months, Ive often heard words like bleak and dismal, and it seemed they were simultaneously referring to the cold, wet winter and the state of business.

But good times or bad times, things always pick up in the spring, and spring is here.

Weve definitely had a lot more interest, said Will Byington, associate broker at Toles, Temple & Wright. A lot of people are looking at houses before school gets out. [Foreclosures and unemployment] affect the market. Some people are still on the fence, but interest rates are still under five percent. I expect a big spring and a big summer. (Families planning to move to a bigger house or a different part of town typically wait until their kids are out of school for the summer.)

Spring also kicks off downtown events that draw visitors, whether from out of town or just from the suburbs, and merchants benefit from that. Sidewalk sales, classic car cruise-ins, the International Festival (April 23-24), the Clocktower Handcycling Races (April 29-30) and the free and popular First Friday concert series are among the annual events coming up. The First Friday concerts begin May 7 at Bridgepoint Plaza and start at 7 p.m., though fans start showing up earlier. Any immediate impact on downtown businesses from the concerts is probably insignificant, since most (except restaurants) close before the concerts begin, but the carryover effect and networking opportunities are there. With live music, entertainment for children and B.Y.O.B. for adults, law enforcement and non-profit food vendors, First Friday is the proverbial come-one, come-all party.

The crowds are always excellent, and we are looking forward to yet another successful season, says Jennifer Morgan with the Downtown Development Authority, which arranges most of the downtown attractions. The concerts run monthly through the first Friday in September.

Still, the economy comes down to jobs, and in turn how much people will spend. The Consumer Confidence Index, that mysterious economic measure, is down again.

The State of Georgia generally lags behind the national economy by about nine to twelve months, and Rome lags that a

little bit, Jones says. The latest predictions Ive seen indicate a bottom sometime in late 2011. That makes sense given the unemployment rates. The consensus estimate is an additional 100,000 jobs per month by the end of the year. But itd take 133,000 to employ the new entrants. Were back once again to the big question: jobs. Everything depends on jobs.

Getting back to the 50-years-from-now fantasy, Id like to read then what weve come to call this dire time. The Great Recession, as it is now and perhaps forever known, is lame. It borrows from The Great Depression, a descriptive name for a slightly differing set of circumstances, but similar in joblessness and careless risk-taking. But The Great Depression sticks for good reason. It has a ring to it. The Great Recession? Thats how Hollywood names sequels: This Two or That Returns.

Im thinking theres got to be a better name than The Great Recession. I havent come up with it yet, but whoever does should trademark it. Thats just good business sense.

BITS OF BIZFor years now, the Georgia Department of Labor has forecast that mainstay textile

manufacturing jobs will not come back to Northwest Georgia (though they wont be lost altogether). Greater Rome has not had them for a while. This is a good thing because it is not the future, for a couple of reasons. One, those jobs encouraged a legacy of little education, if a steady but low-paying wage, and, two, those jobs are gone overseas for the very foreseeable future because thats where the lower wages and lower production costs are now.

The future here belongs in higher technology, healthcare, complementary education and entrepreneurs. Business leaders, government officials, chambers of commerce, development authorities and educators are in accord on that future. Accord, as long as it allows room for reasonable debate and dissent, is a proven good thing.

If accord ever comes to the long-disputed U.S. 411/Interstate 75 connector so that it can be built, it will be a great economic boost for Rome and environs, but local leaders arent sitting on their heels waiting for that to happen. The county and city-county development authorities and the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce are pursuing ways to, one, make hundreds of acres more attractive to large industry, and,

two, entice those potential large employers. Interest has increased since the recession first began, according to the Chamber, but then it goes back to employers trying to read the tea leaves and not be premature in investing.

Meanwhile, efforts continue to improve, utilize and unite with local schools one of Romes underutilized assets, the Richard B. Russell Regional Airport and available land around it. Those efforts, along with the Georgia Northwestern Technical Colleges blooming aviation school on airport grounds and students now going through the College and Career Academy, should be attractive to aviation-related industries. The regional airport has grant money in hand, more than 200 acres available, and bids out for infrastructure on the tract next to the GNTC aviation school.

If all of this seems like its going to take time to sort out, and if you may not be first in line, wouldnt you still rather be in line when the starter pistol goes off? VVV

Learning that you need to have surgery can be stressful. But when you have an experienced and compassionate surgical team on your side, you can feel taken care of, comforted and

safe. J. Kelly Mayfield, MD, Harbin Clinic general surgeon, is one of five Harbin general surgeons offering advanced surgical capabilities. Here, he answers your questions about hernias.

How do I know if I have a hernia?Hernias usually present as a protrusion or lump in the abdominal wall or groin, most commonly noticed when you cough or sneeze. Hernias can be painful but they dont always hurt. In fact, they can be present for many years without causing discomfort.

On the other hand, simply having pain in the groin or abdomen is not usually an indication that you have a hernia.

What is a hernia, exactly? In its strictest sense, the term hernia refers to a defect or hole in the tough, connective tissue layer of the abdominal wall called the fascia, causing a bulging of the abdominal wall. This is often most pronounced when the abdominal wall muscles are tightened (by straining, lifting heavy objects, coughing or sneezing).

Are there different kinds of hernias?Yes. One of the most common types of hernia is a groin hernia (inguinal hernia). These develop because of a natural weakness in the abdominal wall of the groin, and tend to be more common in men. They usually present as a bulge in the groin, sometimes extending into the scrotum.

A ventral hernia develops in the front part of the abdominal wall. These are usually near or involving the navel. A navel hernia, or umbilical hernia, is a specific type of ventral hernia.

An incisional hernia is a very common type that occurs at or near a scar from a

previous operation. Having any incision in the fascia leads to some weakening of the tissue and can lead to formation of a hernia.

A hiatal hernia is in the diaphragm (the muscle that separates the chest and abdominal cavities). Hiatal hernias are very common and dont need to be fixed unless they are associated with problems like severe reflux (heartburn) that is not controlled with medications. Hiatal hernias cannot be felt on the outside of the body and dont cause pain. They are often diagnosed by a CT scan or by endoscopy.

Why are hernias dangerous?Serious complications of an untreated hernia usually arise because of trapping of the abdominal contents within the hernia, which can cut off the blood supply to these abdominal contents and lead to injury to the tissue, or even necrosis or death of the tissue.

Can exercises to make my abdominal muscles stronger make my hernia go away?Exercises such as crunches or sit-ups that increase the pressure in the abdomen will often cause worsening of the hernia symptoms. As the muscles around the hernia become stronger, the hernia will often become more noticeable because of its relative weakness.

Do hernias always have to be fixed? No, there are some occasions when hernias should be managed without an operation. If a patient has other medical conditions which might make surgery unsafe, non-operative management might be preferred. Sometimes, hernias that are not causing symptoms can simply be watched by your doctor.

How is a hernia fixed?Hernias are repaired with an operation, usually by a general surgeon. The type of operation varies depending on patient factors and on the type of hernia.

Traditional open repairs usually involve making an incision over the site of the hernia. The hernia defect is then repaired, usually by using a piece of mesh (often a woven, plastic material) as a patch to, essentially, replace or reinforce the abdominal wall [where it is] weak.

Laparoscopic repair, or minimally-invasive hernia surgery, offers durable repair of hernia defects with smaller incisions. These procedures often cause less discomfort and may offer a quicker return to normal activities. Inguinal, ventral, incisional and hiatal hernias can all often be repaired laparoscopically. What are the risks of hernia repair?Complications from hernia surgery are very rare and should be discussed with your surgeon before the operation. Risks include infection, bleeding, recurrence of the hernia, pain after surgery, and damage to surrounding structures during an operation.

What should I do if I think I have a hernia?Anyone who thinks they may have a hernia should have a simple physical exam by a physician or other medical provider. Expensive or invasive tests are not usually necessary for diagnosis. VVV
