Dear ISP Community,

I am delighted to invite you to read this Annual Report for the fiscal year2007-08. In it you will find a review of the year’s financial results.

The academic year 2007-08 began with more space for both the Primaryand Secondary Schools as grades 4 and 5 moved back to Rue du Ranelagh, enabling us to unite the Primary School again with Nursery-Grade 5 at thesame campus. Secondary School in turn gained four classrooms andadditional extra space that had been used for subjects such as the arts. The School also improved spaces by renovating the Drama room andscience labs in the Secondary School and the art room and play space atthe Primary School.

Academically, ISP acted on the “Matters to be Addressed” that arose fromthe PYP and MYP evaluation visits which have improved the programs andtheir delivery to the children. The IB Diploma results were also somethingto be proud of with a pass rate of 95% and a status of one of the topschools in the world for Bilingual diplomas, a particularly challenging thingto accomplish. The School’s strategic plan, and the various actioncommittees that have resulted from it, are evolving nicely with staff, parents and Trustees who have given much of their time towards schoolimprovement. We take seriously our partnership with all of ISP’sstakeholders. You enrich the School with your generous support, asvolunteers, and through financial donations. The fiscal year 2007-08brought in € 248,000 in donations, which have allowed us to end the yearpositively when a loss was budgeted.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank, recognize and honor thenumerous individuals, foundations, and corporations who have given oftheir time, money and effort to help ISP realize its goals and advance itsmission. Finally, I would like to acknowledge our faculty and staff whoseefforts every day bring vitality and substance to our IB curriculum.

We are very proud of what we have accomplished together, and mostexcited about our future.

Audrey PeverelliInterim Head

Dear ISP Community,

In accordance with French law and our own by-laws, I am pleasedto provide you with a summary of the financial statements for thefiscal year from 1 September 2007 to 31 August 2008.

Total revenue amounted to € 14,031,905.68 with revenuegenerated from tuition fees at € 13,615,433.

Total operating expenses was € 14,364,194.42 with salaries andcharges amounting to € 9,110,887.05. Depreciation andexpenses for premises rose significantly, reflecting the acquisitionof a new building. Building acquisition costs are non-recurring.

Operating income totaled € 99,837.80.

The school’s strategic decision to purchase the 98 Ranelagh buildingproved to be successful as the Primary School and the School asa whole grew this year, achieving its forecast enrollment figures. The 2007-08 net result is € 143,112, an increase of 29%compared to the previous year. The forecast 2007-08 budget had

anticipated a deficit due to the property acquisition, but anexceptional level of fund raising and donations, reaching€ 233,831.79, coupled with slightly higher enrollment figures andcontinued prudent cost management, allowed the school to posta positive result ahead of schedule.

The net result for the fiscal year ended August 31, 2008 of€ 143,112.57 is allocated as follows: € 46,870.14 to endowmentfunds and € 96,242.43 to reserve funds.

Tota l reser ves , inc luding endowment funds, is now€ 3,561,247.07.

The current global financial crisis and economic recession haveled us to adjust our forecasts and to extend our risk analysis. While costs have not been cut, new expenditure programs arebeing carefully monitored. The school’s strong balance sheet andcontinued prudent financial management allows us some comfortas we enter harder times to ensure the financial security of theAssociation in the coming year.

A school’s endowment is its savings account. A healthyendowment ensures that funds will be available shouldthere be an urgent need in the future. Generally, anendowment is divided into three parts:

• Professional Development for the Faculty(Gareth F. Jones Fund)

• Financial assistance and scholarships• Buildings & maintenance.

To date, the endowment at ISP is € 46,870.14.This fund, begun in 2006, is invested in an interestbearing account and will continue to grow throughfuture donations.

With close to 200items in the silent and live auctions, a raffle, and many, generous individual donations, the event was one ofthe key reasons that the annual donations to ISP were higher than ever. It is with much appreciation that weacknowledge the following donors and committed volunteers.

When people ask me about my month in Namibia, I always find myself ata loss for words. Our time in Namibia cannot be captured in a conversation,or PowerPoint, or article; Namibia was an experience which marked us allin ways so profound.

NamibiaRevisitedBy Erika Moyer, Grade 11For the second year in a row, a groupof ISP students and teachers spentthree weeks in the summer of 2008working and learning in Namibia insouthern Africa. The students arenow interested in making “FightingPoverty in Rural Namibia” theirprimary cause over the next severalyears.

As I have spent most of my life inCosta Rica, I know what a developingcountry is like and what help is needed. But Africa, Namibia specifically, wasan entirely different experience.I have been for tunate to haveparticipated in both visits that ISP hasorganized to this country, the first onebeing in July 2007.

Our principal goal for the communityand service trip to Namibia this pastsummer was to contribute and tomake as much a difference in ruralNamibia as we could in three weeks. We started with a visit to theOkabarara High School in a rural areawhere we painted classrooms andtiled floors. At this time we alsowanted to select among the studentsthose who did not have the meansto cover the school costs, and makeit possible for them to finish theirschooling. After examining differentcases, we chose to sponsor Matjua, aseven year old local boy, who wouldcome and spend the day with us.Matjua’s family could not afford topay for the school tuition and neithercould the family of Delicia, a girl at

the same farm as Matjua. We decidedwe would pay for both Matjua andDelicia’s entire schooling. They arenow attending the Step For Childrenprimary school.

However, there was yet anotherproblem. Matjua and Delicia bothlived about 15 kilometers away fromthe school and could not possiblywalk that far every single morning.Since we had some remainingmaterials, we used those and hiredsomeone to build a shelter for bothfamilies. In this way, they will nowlive near the school and won’t have towalk such a distance to receive aneducation. I feel we succeeded inchanging Matjua’s and Delicia’sfuture.

In helping these two youngNamibians we were also helpingou r se l ve s , b y d i s cove r i ng , o rrediscovering, the good feelingthat comes from helping others.
