September 7:
Students return to
school
June is here and once again we ask where the school year went! We’ve been busy this year
learning and relating to each other and we have seen evidence of student growth academically and
socially. We know students have developed in foundational skills and have asked ‘I Wonder’
questions for which they found many answers! They have made gains in learning how to be a
learner. Teachers and staff are delighted with the effort students have made to be the best they
can be!
Some students shared a few of their highlights from this year. Here are some of their thoughts!
Gym– Golf Manitoba
Designing our own boats
Music- the freeze game, Christmas concert, RATS, songs with instruments
Art- watercolour animals and drawing lizards
Math - adding and subtracting double digits
Going to the museum
Watching our caterpillars grow
Designing Lego cars
Learning about Mexico
Learning to take away numbers (subtraction)
Skating field trip (during Construction week)
Writing poems and making books
It was exciting to experience a few ‘firsts’ this year as we started tweeting (@NESHanover) and
began our first Student Voice group – Team NOVA (Noticeable, Open-minded, Voice, and
Action).
As we end the school year we humbly say thanks and farewells. First, we thank Parent Council for
their support and their contributions to our school days. The hot lunch program is a big favorite!
Thanks parents for your partnership as we team together to support your child(ren) in their
learning and relating. A big part of our school is our Volunteer Program – thanks to the many NES
volunteers this year! We thank Grade 4s for their help as hot lunch volunteers, Team NOVA
leaders, and referees during noon intramurals. NES wishes Grade 4 students all the best as they
move to Middle Years at NCI next year!
We have some staff changes next year. You will see some in-school changes listed in the newslet-
ter. Mrs. Katrina McAllister will be going on maternity leave for the year. Mrs. Allison Aitken will
be changing from NES Learning Support teacher to HSD Reading Clinician and will be working in
all the Early Years’ schools. Mrs. Sandra Klassen will be retiring from teaching music at NES. Mrs.
Maggie Funk , EA of 32 years, will be retiring as well. We wish each one of them all the best in
these changes and their new endeavors.
As we look ahead, we have much to look forward to! We will welcome 93 new Kindergarten
students to NES. We know they will feel part of the NES community very quickly. We will also
welcome some “new to NES” teachers – Mrs. Melissa Stewart (Gr.1), Mrs. Kate Hawgood (Gr. 2),
Mrs. Sarah Fust (Gr. 3), and Mrs. Karlissa Davidson (Music). Our new addition will provide us with
more space and we’re very happy about that!
Wishing everyone a safe and enjoyable summer wherever you may be spending it! See you
Tuesday, September 6 at our Meet the Teacher night!

We are fast approaching the end of yet another school year. With each year, the resource program expands and further
develops to meet the needs of our students and staff. We have provided learning support for specific learning needs
throughout all grade levels. Specialized support such as numeracy and literacy programs were provided through small
groups, 1:1 time with an EA, or with one of the learning support teachers.
Individualized education plans have been implemented for 10 students with higher level needs. EAL support has been
provided in class, through small groups or one-to-one, for the students who qualify. Our learning support teachers, Allison
Aitken and Leslie Bardal also provided literacy support to individuals or small groups of students from grades 1 - 4
throughout the year. Our guidance counsellor, Shannon Moffatt implemented the Feeling Buddies program with all of our
kindergarten students as well as those new students in grade 1 and 2. She has provided social-emotional support to
individual students throughout the year.
Mrs. Bardal would like to thank the parents and students that worked with her in Reading Recovery this year! Your
dedication to literacy is appreciated!
It is with very mixed feelings that we need to say farewell to one of the staff members that has been with us for the longest
at NES. We congratulate Maggie Funk on her upcoming retirement. She has been with NES for 32 years! We thank her for
the dedication she has given to NES as a grade 1 - 4 learning support teacher.
We also want to take the opportunity to congratulate Mrs. Allison Aitken on the completion of her Masters of Education
degree. She has accepted the new position as our divisional Reading Clinician. We appreciate the 8 years of dedication she
has given to NES as a grade 2 teacher and as our grade 2 - 4 learning support teacher. We welcome Brenda Lytwyn as our
new grade 1 to 4 learning support teacher for the 2016 - 2017 school year.
NES continues to benefit from excellent divisional clinicians. A big thank you for the support that Laurie Kraynyk
(Counsellor/Social Worker), Stacey Misko (Speech and Language), Stephen Schluter (School Psychologist), and Dani Mellor
(Occupational Therapist) have provided. We will announce the clinicians assigned to our school for the 2016 - 2017 school
year in the September newsletter.
The pre-kindergarten orientation took place on May 18th and 19th. It was delightful to meet the next 93 children who will
be joining our school family. We will have 5 classes attending full day, alternate day, kindergarten in the fall. Please
remember to return your child’s Eye-See-Eye-Learn optometrist form to the teacher in the fall or as you have the check up
done. If you are aware of any other students born in 2011 that have yet to register, please direct them to our office.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call. Have a fun and safe summer.

Notes from the Office...
EXTRA SAND TOYS?
The warm weather is here and the students are enjoying outdoor recess! As a school,
we are looking for outdoor sand toys for our students to play with in the sand
boxes. We would welcome any used or new donations of sand toys. Some examples
would be small shovels, castle frames, vehicles, and diggers. You are welcome to drop
them off at the office or have your child bring them to school and give them to their
teacher. Thank you for your willingness to help!
