The 2014-2015 school year began on August 18th with 553 sixth, seventh, and eighth grade
students at Visintainer.
Mr. Sharosky is back for his second year as Principal after arriving last year from the Cleveland Heights-University Heights City Schools where he was principal of two middle schools-Monticello and Roxbo-ro. He moved his last school Monticello from a rating of “Academic Watch” to “Effective” on the state’s re-port card system in only two years. Prior to Cleveland Heights, Sharosky was a princi-pal, teacher, coach, and athletic director in the Twinsburg City
Schools.
“It is my great pleasure to be part of the tremendous Brunswick City Schools. We really have a family that is the staff of Visintainer and we add our parents and students to
that family.” Sharosky said.
“Last year we had some
new chal-lenges for our school with the new report card system for schools in the state of Ohio and the rating system
for teachers.
This year-we are also dealing with a change in the curriculum to a Common Core set of standards. Along with that change, there are new state tests. These are challenges, but we have a sin-gular vision of student success and the staff will work to make this happen” Mr. Sharosky
said.
“We revised our mission statement last year to reflect this change in expectations from the state.” Sharosky said. “Our mission is ‘We will pre-pare all students for college
and life by providing a challeng-ing curriculum (RIGOR) that connects students’ lives and their future (RELEVANCE) in a safe, supportive, and nurturing environment
(RELATIONSHIPS).”
As part of business this year, Viz is going to be giving the new PARCC tests mandat-ed by the state of Ohio. All the students will be taking performance-based assess-ments in February/March called “Performance Assessments.”

attended John Carroll University
and Padua Franciscan High School. I
completed my master’s degree in
Educational Leadership/

Then tt the end of the year, they will take an End-of-Course exam. All stu-dents will take reading and math. In addition, Sixth graders will take social studies tests and 8th graders take as-
sessments in Science.
Test preparations have already be-gun as teachers are working hard on planning meaningful assignments that connect to the standards established by the state of Ohio and the Common
Core.
One of the things done to prepare students to pass the state-mandated tests and make their learning more meaningful is the continuation of aca-demic teams and refinement of Profes-
sional Learning Communities (PLC’s).
The 6th grade teams consist of the Aviators: Ms. Banevich (LA), Mrs. Schweisthal (math), Mrs. Jakub (Science) and Mrs. Grebey (Social Stud-ies). Mrs. Heffner and Mrs. Davidson are Intervention Specialists for the 6th grade. The Cardinals are the other team: Mrs. Jeppe (LA), Mrs. Shepherd (Social Studies); Mrs. Carlisle (Math)
and Mrs. Wolf (Science).
The 7th grade has two teams. The Rock Stars are Miss Delnay (LA & So-cial Studies), Ms. Barnard (Science & Social Studies), & Mrs. Zielaskiewicz (Math & Social Studies); the Rock-n-Rollers are Miss Coder (LA), Mrs.
(Continued from page 1) Metzger (Science), Mr. Thompson (Social Studies) and Mr. Yoak (Math), Mrs. Ellis, Mrs. Heffner, and Mrs. Kling-
beil are the Intervention Specialists.
The 8th grade has one team this year. The Buckeyes feature Mrs. Grib-ben (LA), Mrs. Novak (Science), Mrs. Hanchuk (Math), Mrs. McCune (Social Studies), Mrs. Dooling (LA & Science), Mrs. Meczka (math & science) and Mrs. Davis (LA & Social Studies). Mrs. Ellis and Mrs. Kling-beil are the 8th grade
Intervention Specialists.
Besides the core teams, Visintainer is fortunate to have the Encore team. The En-core Tribe is Miss Schultz (Art), Mrs. Slusarski (Librarian/Media Specialist), Mr. Salisbury (Technology), Mr. Blessinger (Health), Mr. Eraybar (Band), Mrs. Barko (Orchestra), Mr. Albright (Choir), Mr. Clark (P.E.), Mr. Esterak (P.E.) and Mr. Zvara (Health). For the most part, the Encore Tribe team
teaches 6th, 7th, and 8th graders.
“Our Viz family also includes our support staff including Mrs. Eberwein, Mrs. Guddy, and Mrs. Skala who serve as paraprofessionals. Mrs. Busovicki and Ms. Fleming are the office secretar-ies and Mrs. Boytim is the Assistant
Principal.” Mr. Sharosky said.
We also have a very hard-working and caring cafeteria staff including Mrs. Crow, Mrs. Slepecky, Mrs. Morselli, and
Mrs. Coleman.
Keeping Visintainer in tip-top shape includes Mr. Savage our site manager and our two custodians Mr. Mullen and
Mr. Williamson.
Mr. Sharosky and Mr. Boytim met with 6th, 7th, & 8th grade classes the first week of school to discuss expec-
tations with the students.
“Besides letting the kids know what our expectations are for them” Mrs. Boytim said, “we also discussed the positive aspects of Visintainer. This year, the academic teams will continue to reward students for their efforts and we will honor students as ‘Students of the Week’ and ‘Month.’
This along with the ‘positive referrals’ that the students earn for positive con-tributions to school will enhance the
learning atmosphere at Viz.”
Mr. Sharosky thanked the students for their efforts but also challenged them that if we want our school to be “Excellent” it will take improvement from each and every one of them. He told them he has charged the teachers with providing them challenging work every day. He reminded them that it is a daily challenge to do everything they need to do in class every day to be
successful.

She graduated from the Univer-
sity of Akron this past December
and worked as a long-term substi-
tute in two elementary schools this
past spring.
“I am looking forward to intro-
ducing my students to a large varie-
ty of art mediums and techniques,
as well as community art, and the
importance of having a life-long
appreciation of the arts." Schultz
said.
Renee Schweisthal is teaching
6th grade math on the Aviators
Team.
“I am very excited to be a part
of the Viz teaching staff after teach-
ing in Brunswick for 15 years. Pri-
or to teaching, I was a Child Life
Specialist at Fairview General Hos-
pital where I provided psychosocial
care to pediatric patients.”
Mrs. Schweisthal has been mar-
ried to her husband Mike for 28
years and they have three children,
Andrea, Michael and Kristin. In
addition, they have a one-
year-old Boxer named Lou-
ie.
Chad Thompson is
“new” to Visintainer, but
not “new” to teaching or
Brunswick. Mr. Thompson
is teaching 7th grade social
studies on the Rock ’N’
Rollers team.
“I have taught in the
Brunswick City Schools for the past
(Continued from page 6) and staff at Visintainer any way
possible.”
This year will be a challenge for
Mr. Zvara as he will be teaching six
classes, completing his administra-
tion internship in both the fall and
spring, along with taking a class in
the fall and spring. His goal is
to finish all his masters work
by May of 2015.
“Quick background on
myself, my family moved to
Brunswick in January of 1972.
I attended Brunswick Schools
K-12 (1988 Grad). My wife is
also a teacher at Brunswick
High School. She is a social
studies teacher and Department
Head. My wife, her parent, and
grandparent all attended Brunswick
School K-12. We have two sons
Paul who is 7 and Brock who will
be 4 at the end of September.”
Something “new” for Mr. Zvara
is in addition to his time at the mid-
dle school, he is not coaching foot-
ball this Fall.
“I have spent 18 years of my
career coaching football. But hav-

Student behavior at varsity football games
The Brunswick Blue Devils varsity
football team began their season on
Friday, August 29th, at home versus
Medina.
While the staff and students of the
team appreciate the parent, commu-
nity and student support, there are
expectations for student behavior.
“The high school administrators
attend the games, but they do not
know the middle school children”
Mr. Sharosky said. “The middle
school administrators will be at
several of the games and each prin-
cipal has reviewed with their stu-
dents what the appropriate behav-
ior looks like.“
Students are expected to sit in
the middle school student section.
They are not permitted to wander
the stadium. There are other staff
that work the games and they will
direct students accordingly. But
they often do not know the kids
as well. If students do not follow
the rules, they will be asked to
leave the stadium and potentially
be excused from future contests.

FUTURE EVENTS AT Viz-Sept.
*This is not a complete list of athletic events-please see our website
well as any clothing or shoes found.
Please remember to have names
on everything. Things that have
names on them are returned to the
students. Things without names end
up in the lost and found. Absences and tardies are normal as students are learning where their classes are and learning their new schedules. If students do miss class because of illness, please make sure they see their teachers for any missed assignments. When students are going to be absent, please call the attendance
line (24 hrs. a day) at (330) 273-0448.
Having recently completed my ten-ure as a middle school parent (my youngest child is now a 10th grader), I know middle schoolers are not the most communicative about what hap-pens at school. I am committed to making this newsletter and our web site sources of information for parents. But, that being said, please do not hesi-tate to contact the office with any con-
cerns.
Welcome to the 2014-2015 school
year! I know the staff and I are looking
forward to an excellent year at Vis-
intainer.
We are continuing our programs to
recognize students for achievement.
The “Student of the Week” program
recognizes one student from each
grade as selected by the teachers.
Students can be selected for academic
or good citizenship reasons. Students
receive a candy treat along with a cer-
tificate. Students of the Month are
also selected by the teachers. They
receive a certificate, and a candy treat.
We will also be recognizing students
for being on the Honor and Merit
rolls. Athletes of the Month will also
be selected by the coaches. Next
month’s issue of the Blue Devil Times
will highlight our September Super
Students.
The lost and found section at Vis-
intainer is in the cafeteria. Lost text-
books and binders are turned in as
Parents have inquired about Kevin Barre, our former assistant principal. I was saddened with Mr. Barre’s depar-ture. He taught in a high school prior to coming to Viz and I know he would ultimately like to be a high school prin-cipal. He was offered an opportunity to be a high school assistant at a dis-trict much closer to his home. I know he struggled with that choice, but ulti-mately took that position. He will be
missed here at Visintainer.
