LAWCO LORE

Message From The Presidents Desk

It's summer and time to get out walking in the cemeteries and taking

tombstone pictures. However, I've been sidelined by a knee injury.

The float for the Memorial Day parade in Ironton was a success

again this year. Photos are included in this newsletter. Next year's float will

honor the Bicentennial of Lawrence County Ohio. Start collecting and send-

ing in your information now so you don't miss out.

Please send your pictures and stories to us so we can share them

with others. It may seem "old hat" and just a story that you thought everyone

knew about, but it could unlock a brick wall for someone else. Queries are

free.

Our annual library lock-in is Friday, July 31, starting at 6 PM. We will have supper before we

get started. We will provide the meat so bring a salad or dessert. Let us know if you plan to attend.

The room only holds about 30 people. The Hamner room has hidden treasures. I always find

something new. Talking to other researchers can also get you rejuvenated. People are attending from

out-of-state so come and share. Lawrence County is an almost 200- year- old wealth of history. We

will stay until you want to leave.

The July 4 meeting has been canceled due to the holiday. See you in September.

Blast From The Past

The Lawco Lore edition from May 1985 provides the debut for the Lawrence County seal. Betty Burcham and Barbara Rutledge were noted as key contributors to the design as well as Manuel Garcia, an exchange student who lived with the Burchams and drew the original design. The symbols on the seal are described as: the sun rays taken from the Great Seal of the State of Ohio, the dome of the present courthouse, an iron furnace, outline of the county with townships marked, Rome Beauty apple and the Lizzie Bay - a Lawrence County based packet boat. In the outer ring is the Ohio symbol, the Buckeye. The next edition of the Lore says: “On November 6, 1985, the Lawrence County Commissioners adopted the seal designed by our organization as the Official seal of Lawrence County. Lee Daniel, our very talented member, rendered the final version of the seal in a combination of pencil, Indian ink and acrylics.” And now thirty years later we are still proudly displaying this seal across the county.

Debbie Campbell Represents Cabell County Genealogy at Meeting

Debbie Campbell, president of the KYOWVA Genealogical and Historical Society, gave a presentation about doing research in WV at our May 2nd meeting. She brought the two Cabell County Heritage Books. Debbie al-so explained what is in their library and the hours. I have been there, and if you have ancestors in Cabell Co. or counties near by, you should visit. The parade theme for this year was “U.S.A. Strong” and the Society did a fine job of

displaying the theme by honoring Civil War soldiers of Lawrence County. Don Clark and David

Bradley did a fabulous job assembling the float. We all appreciate your hard work and dedication!

Wayne V. Rucker (11 May 1921-5 June 2015)

On June 5, 2015, my wonderful

stepfather and friend passed away. Wayne Rucker, blessed with 94 years of life, was a World War II veteran, having served as a medic, watched over prisoners, and helped wire the bombs in England and France. His suitcases were packed for Japan, but fortunately the war came to an end.

After the war Wayne began working

as a carpenter in the Columbus, Ohio, area, retiring in 1988. He returned to his native Lawrence County in 1991 and married my mother, a childhood friend, in 1992. After her death in 1996, I continued to visit with him and learned so much about his family. The son of Joseph and Emma Reynolds Rucker, he never forgot people he had known many years ago.

Both the Ruckers and Reynolds and

many of his older-generation family mem-bers were also natives of Lawrence County.

I loved to hear his stories and will

always remember his laugh when telling a funny story. Wayne was the last member of his immediate family, which included five sisters and two brothers. Wayne was laid to rest in the Rucker Family Cemetery beside his first wife Edna and daughter Ruth. Military rites were conducted by V.F.W. Post # 8850.

He will be sorely missed by his daughter Alice, other family members, and all who knew and

loved him. One day when I was leaving his house, I hugged him and told him I loved him. He replied, “I

love you and that is not going to change.” I will never forget him and the many conversations we enjoyed, and I am so grateful he was part of my life.

From the Ironton Register….

Sadie BROUGH probably won’t mean much to you. But Julia MARLOWE will.

They were one and the same.

Ironton Evening Tribune September 4, 1938

When the famous actress Marlowe was a familiar figure to Irontonians she was a wisp of a child, about five

years old. Her family, the Broughs, was a transient one, much like many others who, in the period following

the Civil War, were attracted to Ironton’s mills and foundries for work and daily bread. Sadie’s father was as

itinerant shoe worker who brought his

family here in the early ‘70s.

Some have handed down the story

through the generations that Sadie’s

mother managed a saloon, but there is

nothing in surviving annals to verify this.

And Sadie, herself, is remembered as a

youngster in wretched surroundings, poor

and dirty, but even then standing out from

the crowd as a beautiful child.

In years to come, Sadie climbed

above her family background and inferior

heritage to become the greatest

Shakespearean actress of her day, not as

Sadie Brough, but as Julia Marlowe. She

later married E.H. SOUTHERS, with

whom she played in Shakespearean

drama.
