Corrie ten Boom“Forgiveness is possible no matter what hurts.I have experienced not through human will

power, but through the supernatural, amazing grace of the One who forgave my great debt.”

The ten Boom family left a legacy of deep Christian faith and forgiveness. They lived in the Netherlands where their father, Casper ten Boom, owned a watch

shop. Every day the family gathered to hear a reading from the Bible and share in the family business. Born in 1892, Corrie was the youngest of four children.

When she wasn’t busy with the family business, Corrie worked with disabled people, took in foster children, and ran a club for young girls. But all of that changed when war broke out in Germany. Jewish people were targeted by Nazi Germany. They were killed, imprisoned, beaten, and much worse.

In 1942, a Jewish woman came to the ten Boom house after the rest of her family had been taken. She was brought in immediately, and the “Hiding Place” was born. Corrie managed to secure ration cards for those in hiding so there would be plenty of food. They also built a secret room to keep the Jews safe.

In February of 1944, the Nazis received a tip that the ten Booms were hiding Jews and raided the home around midnight. All of the Jews were able to get into the secret room and none of them were ever found. However, the ten Booms were taken into captivity that night as they were still suspected of wrongdoing.

They were sent to Scheveningen prison where Casper (Corrie’s dad) died 10 days later. He was already in poor health at the time of arrest and could not withstand the conditions of the prison camp. Corrie and her sister were sent to another prison camp and then to Ravensbruk. Within a few months of being at Ravensbruk, her sister Betsie died from a lack of medical care and horrible conditions.

After spending almost a year in the prison camp nearly starving, being beaten daily, and lying in fleas, urine, and other disgust, Corrie was released from the prison camp. On her deathbed, Betsie had promised that Corrie would be released, and it came true just 12 days later. On the way home, she quickly realized how many people were going to need her help as they recovered from this horror. She went back to her home and began working with people who had been released from the prison camps. Many of them had nowhere to go or were suffering greatly from the emotional and physical abuse at the camps.

She also traveled the world speaking and teaching of the great hope we have in God. On one occasion when she finished speaking, she was approached by a familiar face. The man extended his hand and asked Corrie to forgive him. She immediately recognized him as one of the guards at the prison camp. Despite his horrific behavior toward her and Betsie, Corrie was able to forgive him.

Corrie’s life was one of incredible service, compassion, and love. But her willingness to forgive the unthinkable is the thing that demonstrates her love for God in a way that most people will never forget.

The Bible says that if we ask, God is faithful to forgive us of our sins. It ’s important that we ask God to do that AND that we ask for forgiveness from the person we hurt or sinned against. Is there something that you need forgiveness for? Make it right and then write about it below.
