WELCOME
it has been a year of doing. a year of successes. a year of changing lives. and we could not have done it without your dedication, passion and time. Truly a year of transforming plans into action, watching ideas take shape and seeing hard work pay off, the 2012-2013 campaign year has been one full of wonder, pride and collaboration by so many dedicated people.
We are reminded daily of the collective power we have, power generated by the joint efforts of so many talented people who give so much of themselves to create a better and brighter southern Nevada. With our sincerest thanks, we’d like to recognize each and every person who touches our organization. Whether it is by giving, volunteering an hour or a day, or by rallying others and advocating on behalf of our initiatives, it is your support that helps firmly build a stronger foundation for our community. This year, we have so many successes for which to be grateful.
Through our combined time, talent and resources, we are shaping a preschooler’s education, so she faces better, more promising life outcomes. Without you, Delilah would not be where she is today (see her story on page 5). We are affecting an on the edge high-schooler, driving her towards options and resources, so she will have a better life. Without you, Melisa would not be as ready as she is to graduate and to get out into the world. We are giving underinsured children a medical home, preventative care and immunizations. VaRon’s son would not be as healthy and as prepared as he is without you (see his story on page 9). We are giving underserved families an extra lifeline, during difficult financial times, to access the resources they need to get a solid tax refund to invest in their futures, or to get financial education so they can better navigate the system. Sandra Hill reminds us of how powerful free tax preparation was to her (see her story on page 7). With her return, she was able to fill a gap and get back on her feet. She would not be where she is today without you.
This strong foundation of support, partnership and belief in a better tomorrow has enabled us to achieve far-reaching goals in the areas of Education, Financial Stability and Health. The numbers of lives we have touched is staggering, but not only that, it is the fact that this influence has created a new path, a new future, a completely redirected route to success for so many people. We have seen perspectives change through transformative volunteer projects. To get out of our normal comfort zones and to work shoulder to shoulder with new people to read to children, beautify a neighborhood, or to assist someone through a complex tax preparation is life-changing, for the volunteer and for the community itself.
You are the doers, the dreamers, the believers, the optimists, the change agents. You don’t talk about what things could be, you act now to make them what they should be. We are proud to stand with you as our partners, supporters and friends. Every day, we continue to build our future through the collective action that you bring through your efforts. For helping one person truly helps so many more. Touching one life touches so many other lives. Success is like a ripple in water, flowing out to so many others.
On behalf of your many friends throughout United Way and within this community, thank you for what you do to impact lives. Thank you for believing, for doing, for dreaming.Together, we can change lives. Together, we ARE changing lives. Together, we LIVE UNITED.
Sincerely,
Cass Palmer Don GibePresident and CEO Volunteer Board ChairmanUnited Way of Southern Nevada United Way of Southern Nevada

BUILDING BLOCKS OF A GOOD LIFE
United Way of Southern Nevada is part of a worldwide movement to create communities where all individuals and families achieve their human potential. United Way works to advance the common good through our focus on Education, Financial Stability and Health, the building blocks of a good life. We recruit people and organizations from around the community who bring passion, expertise and resources needed to get things done. Together, person by person, we can make lasting change.

FINANCIAL STABILITYWe improve the financial capability of hardworking individuals and families by helping them navigate the complicated waters of personal finance, get the most from their earnings and save for the future so they can weather any storm.
HEALTHWe help underserved children and families get access to healthcare for preventative care, a medical home, immunizations and dental care so that they can live healthier lives.

DRIVING RESULTS THAT ALLoW CHILDREN To THRIVE
2010-2013:
• More than 35,000 high school students and their families have received information, support and resources to increase on-time graduation.
• More than 64,000 hours of professional development have been deployed, strengthening the skill base and competency of early childhood educators.
• More than 18,000 pre-k students and their families have participated in family engagement workshops, contributing to more confident, healthier and happier families.
• More than 1,000 kids were given preschool scholarships, helping to get students off to a strong start with a solid academic foundation.
Enrollment in quality early childhood education programs improves student performance all the way through on-time high school graduation by building a solid foundation for a lifetime of learning.
A single mother of five-year-old
Delilah, Vanessa was raising
her daughter at home and didn’t have the resources to send her to preschool until she found out about United Way’s Tuition Assistance Preschool Scholarship (TAPS) program. With this tuition assistance, Vanessa was able to obtain
VANESSA AND DELILAH’S SToRY
quality early childhood education for Delilah and prepare her for school.
“Early childhood education has had a big impact on Delilah’s life,” said Vanessa. “She is now able to interact and she’s learned to spell and do math.”
She described Delilah as very shy and without a desire to learn before preschool.
“Delilah can spell now. She knows the sounds that the letters make,” said Vanessa. “She loves to read the Biscuit books, we read together every night.”
United Way invests in the education of children under the age of six because the years between birth to six are the most crucial years of brain development.
One component of the qualifications for funding is family engagement, so Vanessa volunteered at Delilah’s preschool. The preschool saw her dedication and commitment and hired Vanessa as a substitute teacher, helping to bring in needed income while Vanessa studies to become a pharmacist.
Because of United Way, Vanessa can focus on building a future for her and her daughter.
“Preschool is very expensive,” said Vanessa. “I wouldn’t have been able to afford it and send Delilah to preschool without the help of United Way.”
To Vanessa, the significance of starting her daughter out with meaningful support and the educational background to succeed is significant.
“Preschool is very important for children,” said Vanessa. “It gives them the confidence they need to succeed and prepares them for kindergarten. If children don’t have early childhood education, they start out behind.”
The benefits of early childhood education are evident as Delilah proudly recites the alphabet. “Thank you United Way for making it possible for my daughter to be in preschool,” said Vanessa.

DRIVING RESULTS THAT ALLoW INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES To PRoSPER
2010-2013:
• More than 18,100 total tax returns have been filed, with $13.3M in tax credits returned and a total of $23.9M in tax refunds provided back into the community.
• More than 17,000 kids, grades 1-5, participated in financial literacy education, showing a 49% increase (in ‘11-‘13) in financial fluency.
• More than $18,500 saved by the students of Walter Bracken Elementary School through the “Piggy Bank” program.
• Nearly 3,100 high school students received financial literacy education in 26 high schools through the United Way/Citi “$MART” Program with 61% earning their certification in financial literacy (‘12-’13 school year).
Aligning our community impact work in Education, Financial Stability and Health, United Way recognizes that it takes a healthy, educated child to become a financially self-sufficient adult, and that it takes a financially stable family to foster the health and education of its children.
Sandra didn’t know what to
expect when she arrived at
the United Way “Earn It Keep
It Save It” Super Saturday at
Heinrich YMCA on March 16.
The single mom of nine-
year-old son David knows
what it’s like to struggle. The
breadwinner for her family,
SANDRA’S SToRY
Sandra’s mom also lives at her home. Last year, Sandra went through
foreclosure and bankruptcy through circumstances beyond her control.
Finding help getting your taxes done when you have a foreclosure or a
bankruptcy is a daunting process. She checked all around town and found
that most places charged around $300 for those in situations like hers.
“Who can afford to pay $300 to get their taxes done?” said Sandra. “I am
living paycheck to paycheck.”
Then one day Sandra’s mom heard about the free tax preparation that
United Way offered on 8 News NOW. Sandra and her mom decided to check
out the event.
“I loved it!” said Sandra. “I was happy that they were able to do my taxes for
free. A gentleman took his time and was very helpful.”
Sandra could not believe the amount of money she will receive in her
return.
“I will get $3,000 back and I thought I would have to pay!” said Sandra.
Sandra’s plans for her return include paying the bills and setting some of
the money aside.
“I am trying to play catch up,” said Sandra. “It was a huge relief that took a
large burden off my shoulders.”
Sandra plans to save $1,000 to take her son David to New York.
“I want him to see where me and my family grew up and take him to some
Broadway shows and let him eat the great food in New York.”

DRIVING RESULTS THAT PRoMISE HEALTHY oUTCoMES
2010-2013:
• More than 250,000 immunizations were given to children birth to age 10, preparing kids for school, improving attendance, and increasing the chances for school success.
• More than 99,000 children, birth to age 10, received immunizations, protecting them from life threatening disease.
• More than 17,000 children received preventative medical care from a family doctor, providing them continuity of care and a medical home.
• More than 25,000 dental services were provided to families at no cost, contributing to overall health and wellness.
Since healthy children are better prepared to learn and succeed in life, United Way’s volunteers, partners, community leaders and staff are focused on the strategic alignment of our Health, Education and Financial Stability Councils.
VaRon recently joined
hundreds of other families
who brought their children to
receive free medical services
during a United Way sponsored
health event.
For the proud father of a two-
year-old son, the health event
VARoN’S SToRY
was a perfect opportunity to get his son immunized at a convenient time
and location and all at no cost.
“It was a good experience,” explained VaRon. “Everyone was nice and
helpful, it was air conditioned and there were healthy snacks.”
For VaRon the biggest benefit of attending the fair was getting his son
immunized and protecting him against diseases.
“It’s important to get my son vaccinated because who knows what would
happen, so why take a chance,” said VaRon. “I don’t have any insurance and I
was able to get my son immunized for free.”
Before immunizations were available, over 13,000 cases of Paralytic Polio
were reported each year in the United States, an average of 450 Measles
associated deaths were reported per year between 1953 and 1963 and
nearly all persons in the United States suffered from Chickenpox by
adulthood and over 100 deaths were caused by the disease per year.*
Immunizing children helps to ensure that they stay healthy and can enter
school on time, so they are better prepared to learn and succeed in life.
The health fair, sponsored by United Way, provided a full gamut of free
health assistance, including free vision screening and dental assistance from
University of Nevada, Las Vegas and Future Smiles.

United Way’s Volunteer Center is the largest community volunteer force in southern Nevada. A one-stop-shop that connects individuals, families, groups and corporations to fun, meaningful and impactful volunteer opportunities in southern Nevada, we have amassed a near army of dedicated and passionate volunteers. A deeply rewarding experience, whether you’re 18 or 80, a high school student or a retiree, volunteers make both immediate and lasting change, improving
lives and building a stronger community fabric person by person. Our mission for the Volunteer Center is to inspire, equip and mobilize people to change lives through volunteer service.
Via our volunteer website, we engage more than 6,000 individuals with more than 450 non-profit and community- based organizations in southern Nevada. Whether a volunteer is looking to read to children, prepare taxes for qualifying families, feed the hungry, or assemble hygiene kits for the homeless, UWSN can connect you to an organization in need of your help. Whether you are looking to volunteer for an hour, a day, a week or all year long, we can connect you to a project worthy of your time and effort.

NATIoNAL SERVICEThrough AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps VISTA, thousands of volunteers of all ages from across the country donate millions of hours of service each year towards education, public safety, health and the environment. Members may tutor and mentor youth, build affordable housing, teach computer skills, clean parks and streams, run after-school programs or help communities respond to disasters.
MAKING AN IMPACTIN oUR CoMMUNITY UWSN’s Volunteer Center engages people in volunteer opportunities where they can share their talents, learn new skills and create positive change as individuals. The Volunteer Center also participates in multiple National Days of Service and Corporate Service Projects throughout the year.
WoRKPLACE VoLUNTEERING UWSN’s Volunteer Center regularly partners with local businesses and corporations to design days of service for their team members. Corporations repeatedly comment on the “esprit de corps” community service inspires in their workforce. We see that those who volunteer through the workplace are appreciative to have the opportunity to do so, and those who volunteer have a greater outlook on their work and in life in general.
IMMEASURABLE VALUE While the Independent Sector has assigned an hourly value of a volunteer’s time, we view every hour spent as immeasurable.
What most people envision for their retirement probably does not include young children and going back to the classroom. But that’s exactly what Larry Backes did when he retired after spending 37 years of his life dedicated to finance and the last 17 at U.S. Bank.
LARRY’S SToRY
“I have been fortunate to receive a good education, and I experienced the importance of motivated teachers,” said Larry. “I thought that perhaps I could do the same for others.”
With a passion for education, Larry was looking for an opportunity to help inspire young children to learn. United Way’s Volunteer Center connected Larry with an opportunity to read to young children at partner child care centers that are focused on helping children enter school ready to learn at grade level or above.
“I have always loved to read and wanted to instill that desire in children,” said Larry. “I believe that if children are not exposed to the joys of reading at an early age, then it is much less likely that they will pick up the habit in later life.”
The encouragement that he received from the children inspired him to express his creative side and try his hand at writing a short story about his family dog that has been well received.
“The children get involved in the story as they hope for a happy ending,” said Larry. “I enjoy seeing the happy faces of the children and can really appreciate the passion and dedication of the pre-school workers. I know it’s a cliche, but ‘the children are our future’ so I enjoy doing my small part.”
Throughout his career, Larry supported United Way and became aware of some of the programs that it supported.
“The United Way helps the community by focusing funds and volunteers to help serve the needs of Las Vegas,” said Larry.
Larry believes that United Way makes finding a volunteer experience easy and fulfilling.
“United Way’s Volunteer Center website lists so many worthy opportunities and you can reach out to the United Way staff to help guide you in your choice,” said Larry. “The rewards to the volunteer are much greater than the effort expended.”

United Way’s Tocqueville Society was formed to deepen the understanding, dedication and support of individuals to their local United Way and to recognize their commitment to service.
Only 26 years old when he came to America in 1831, Alexis Charles-Henri de Tocqueville traveled extensively, recording his observations of life in the young nation. Tocqueville recognized, applauded and immortalized American voluntary action on behalf of the common good. He wrote: “I must say that I have seen Americans make a great deal of real sacrifices to the public welfare; and have noticed a hundred instances in which they hardly ever failed to lend a faithful support to one another,” eloquently capturing the essence of personal philanthropy that persists centuries later.

TOCqUEVILLE SOCIETY SPOTLIGHT
With more than 33 years of marriage and a family of three children and two grandchildren, Emily and Brad Neilson are the picture of stability and consistency. With deep roots in the valley, the couple believes in giving back to the community that has given so much to them. Raised in Las Vegas, Brad’s family owned and operated the Vegas Arco Truck Stop at Tropicana and Interstate 15; while Emily was raised in St. George, Utah and moved to Las Vegas when the couple married in 1980. Emily and Brad are proud of the family they have raised in Las Vegas. “Our three children are all married now, two in the last six months!” explained Emily. “We love being grandparents and look forward to our third who is expected in November.” Not afraid to get dirty and enjoy the great outdoors, the active family likes to ride motorcycles and ATVs. “Growing up, we both spent a lot of time in Pine Valley, Utah in the Dixie National Forest. It’s a wonderful escape from the harsh summers,” said Emily. “We have continued the tradition with our children and grandchildren.” When the couple isn’t cruising down the trails, they enjoy spending time in their backyard while the kids play. “For Christmas last year, Brad gave me a new playground for our backyard. I love it!” said Emily. “It’s a great excuse to sit outside in the evenings after being cooped up in an office all day, watching the grandkids play and having picnics with them in the little ‘tree house’ area.” Working her way up through the organization, Emily is the President and General Manager at 8 News NOW (KLAS-TV), while Brad left Suburban Propane to become a stay-at-home dad. “It was worth the necessary sacrifices to have one parent at home during those very busy teenage years,” said Emily. “He is a terrific dad and and an even better Papa!” Emily joined 8 News NOW when she moved to Las Vegas in 1980. “I began in support positions and spent the majority of my career working up through leadership positions in the newsroom,” said Emily. “I served as News Director for seven years and in 2004 became the General Manager. I’ve been very fortunate to have been able to stay with the same company in the same city for over 30 years.” When introduced to United Way through the 8 News NOW workplace campaign, Emily wanted to give, but didn’t have the time to figure out the best way to help. “The United Way workplace campaign solved that,” said Emily. “I’ve found people want to help, especially during tough times. They often just don’t know how or haven’t been asked.” As committed Tocqueville members, Emily and Brad believe in paying it forward. “We received help early in our marriage and we are proud to be able to help others now,” said Emily. “We hope they do the same for others.” Serving on United Way’s board since 2004 and recently elected as chairman, Emily is impressed with United Way’s goal to not just help with immediate needs, but also its discipline to dig in and achieve lasting change for families. “Even if it’s just an hour of your time or a dollar from your paycheck, it makes a difference,” said Emily. “You will be surprised at the amount of happiness it brings to your own life when you put others first. Be the example.”

United Way of Southern Nevada Women’s Leadership Council (WLC) promotes community involvement and philanthropic giving among women in our community with the purpose of furthering United Way’s Community-based agenda. United Way is in a unique position to leverage the collective giving ability of women leaders in the community.
WoMEN’S LEADERSHIP CoUNCIL VISIoN AND MISSIoNThe vision of the WLC is to strengthen the social landscape by engaging women leaders to inspire others in taking action, creating long-lasting change in the community through education, access to healthcare and financial stability. This influential group, led by volunteer co-chairwomen Cindy Brinker and Deb Mele-Blanchard, is forging the way to a better future through their gifts of time, leadership and financial support. The mission is to engage and develop our members to be leaders in creating impactful change in our community through Education, Health and Financial Stability.
WoMEN’S LEADERSHIP CoUNCIL IN THE CoMMUNITY The Women’s Leadership Council furthers the mission of United Way of Southern Nevada’s key impact areas in Health, Education and Financial Stability. Members of the WLC take action in improving the lives of southern Nevada’s children by their role in United Way’s Family Engagement Resource Centers (FERCs). The Family Engagement Resource Centers are located in five local high schools and target underserved teens who may be at risk of dropping out of school. Through their involvement, these teens and their families receive support, comfort and resources to strengthen the home-school connection and assist in keeping kids on track to graduate. The FERCs are located in the following high schools:• Clark • Sunrise Mountain• Eldorado • Western• Silverado
In addition, in partnership with Spread the Word Nevada, the WLC sponsors “Breakfast with Books” once a month at Dean Peterson Elementary School. Families are treated to a light breakfast, a book reading, and a free developmentally appropriate and enriching book to build their home libraries.

Angel Williams moved to Las Vegas with no intention of staying for longer than two years. With 10 years under her belt, Angel is planting deep roots in the city that she feels proud to call home.
“My husband and I are raising our two daughters here and have encouraged extended family to join us,” said Angel. “This is our home and we want to do our part to affect positive community experiences.”
The San Diego native and mother of two describes herself with one simple sentence.
“I am a mother, wife, daughter, a lover of food, travel, shopping, and the San Diego Chargers,” said Angel. “Go Bolts!”
As the Director of Community Relations and Business Development at Miracle Mile Shops, Angel relishes her job. She found her way to the dynamic career through her father’s guidance as a graduating college senior who had worked retail for 10 years.
“My father suggested I interview with the mall’s marketing director,” said Angel. “I landed my first mall marketing position six months later and now I’ve enjoyed a career in shopping center marketing for over 14 years.”
In her current position, Angel helps the mall to partner with different community organizations to engage a network of partners and consumers to impact change and improvement in the southern Nevada community.
“Coming through our recent recession and being inundated with news of economic instability and deep community needs, I became inspired to be a part of a solution for what is good,” said Angel. “Everyone needs a helping hand at some point; it could be an encouraging word, a sense of hope or something more tangible.”
Angel got involved with United Way’s Women’s Leadership Council (WLC) a year ago to extend her own reach into the community, supporting the core needs of women and children.
“I like the fact that United Way of Southern Nevada organizes support and resources to address three core areas of our community needs: health, education and financial stability,” said Angel. “As a member of WLC, I can contribute to those three core areas while engaging with other strong, professional and community-minded women.”
She has found that the other WLC members have inspired her to roll up her sleeves and get involved.
“It’s very inspiring to have worked with so many professional, talented and committed women in this organization,” said Angel. “I learn from them with every interaction. It’s also very uplifting in both my personal and professional life to serve the community through WLC.”
Angel has served on many WLC committees, but was deeply impacted by the opportunity to select the 2013 WLC Annual Luncheon Fashion Show honorees.
“All of our candidates had done such amazing and impactful work, I wanted them all to be honored in some way,” said Angel. “I was proud for the roles women are playing in our community, and I’m glad that the WLC recognizes and celebrates that.”
Angel strives to LIVE UNITED every day and encourages others to get involved and support United Way.
“You couldn’t pick a better organization that rallies organizations, people and resources, and does so in the most professional and efficient manner,” said Angel. “The staff at United Way of Southern Nevada teach and inspire me in their service to our community.”

YOUNGPHILANTHROPISTS
SOCIETY
United Way of Southern Nevada (UWSN) recognizes and applauds the accomplishments and efforts of this dynamic group of young philanthropists. These leaders are passionate about creating lasting change in alignment with United Way’s Community-based Agenda goals focusing on education, health and financial stability.
Young Philanthropists Society (YPS) is a membership group of young financial contributors who are committed through resources and time to give back to our community through philanthropic efforts, advocacy and volunteerism.
Members of the Young Philanthropists Society benefit by increasing their community involvement, understanding the non-profit agenda and engaging in meaningful experiences that will prepare them for community leadership.
YPS MISSIoN To make a difference in children’s lives through volunteerism, mentorship and events by harnessing the energy, commitment and diverse skills sets of the next generation of leaders.
YPS IN THE CoMMUNITYLaunched on Oct. 5, 2012, YPS created the “Piggy Bank” program as an innovative, real-world solution to teach the students at Walter Bracken Elementary School how to save and be financially responsible.
A collaboration between UWSN, YPS, Walter Bracken Elementary School, Junior Achievement, Silver State Schools Credit Union (SSSCU), Andson Foundation and various volunteers, the “Piggy Bank” program includes financial literacy curriculum and a kid-friendly bank with a bank teller counter, a TV to showcase each classroom’s savings and decals on the walls with money saving tips.
The only program of its kind in Nevada for elementary school children, the “Piggy Bank” helps children to learn how to save and make smart financial decisions at an early age so that growing up they are armed with the knowledge of the importance of saving. The “Piggy Bank” program inspired the children to save over $18,000 from October 2012 to May 2013.

TAM
MY
SHAW
Raised by a family that prevailed over adversity and escaped Vietnam to the friendly city of Las Vegas, it’s no surprise that Tammy Shaw has built a successful publishing firm and exudes a unique mix of confidence and humility.
“In 1975 my grandmother had the courage to escape South Vietnam before it fell to communism,” said Tammy. “I am so grateful for a city and country that had open arms to allow my family to thrive and live a full life.”
Through drive, perseverance, intelligence and the ability to listen to others, she started in the publishing business as a young 25-year-old, growing four successful publications, including Las Vegas Woman. Now 10 years later, she is known throughout Las Vegas and beyond for her success in the highly competitive world of publishing.
“It has been a true privilege and honor to publish Las Vegas Woman,” said Tammy. “I have had my fair share of challenges and I believe these challenges ultimately improve the magazine, our company, the employees and myself.” Describing herself as a personal growth junkie, Tammy strives to do something positive every morning whether it be reading or listening to audio books.
“I believe that there is a greater purpose for all of us,” said Tammy. “I really do my best to be better each day. I’m striving towards my ultimate purpose which is to always help and serve. It’s not about me but about who we can help.”
Inspired by the energy, tight bond and serving spirit of United Way’s Young Philanthropists Society (YPS), she joined the group and finds the time from her demanding schedule to get involved.
“It’s nice to know that there’s a large community like YPS that’s making a huge difference outside of ourselves,” said Tammy. “We encourage and lift each other up.”
Tammy explained that with YPS, philanthropy goes beyond the money.
“We are changing lives in the community,” said Tammy. “We go into schools and encourage children to become incredible members of society, to give them hope and faith.”
Recalling a memorable moment, Tammy shared how helping a young girl fit into newly donated shoes during a YPS event left a lasting impression.
“She shared with me that this is her only way of getting shoes,” said Tammy. “She gave me the biggest hug. That moment can help shape the rest of her life.”
Tammy also supports United Way by featuring those who actively support United Way in Las Vegas Woman.
“United Way is part of the glue to our community, bringing together many different organizations, individuals and businesses to have a sense of community,” said Tammy. “I feel like United Way is home, like it’s an extension of my family.” P

Balancing the demands of a successful career and raising two young children is challenging, but Jennifer Fickel tackles the challenge with grace and confidence. She is passionate about supporting United Way’s work in the community and encouraging employees to do the same. Working her way up through the corporate ladder at Enterprise Holdings, Jennifer loves her career but is also dedicated to ensuring that her young son and daughter have the love and support they need from both of their parents. “Both of us work full time and are busy with our children, watching them reach all of their milestones,” said Jennifer. “They bring us so much joy.” Raised in the quaint, small town of Roseville, California, Jennifer grew up as the youngest surrounded by two older brothers. “Being the youngest with two older brothers, I learned to have my own voice and be strong,” explained Jennifer. When she has the opportunity, Jennifer loves to go to the movies and dine out at Del Frisco’s. “My childhood favorite movie is Wizard of Oz,” said Jennifer. “I remember loving watching it transition from black and white to color with my mom growing up.” Starting her career with Enterprise Holdings as a management trainee in 1997, she now serves as the Group Human Resources Manager for over 800 employees. “I love my job,” said Jennifer. “I report to the General Manager and oversee training and development, talent acquisition and legal issues,” said Jennifer. Jennifer describes herself as very loyal, independent, passionate and strong in her convictions. These qualities impact her leadership of Enterprise Holdings’ United Way campaign. “I am not afraid to speak out and share my passion to expand the employees’ knowledge and horizons,” said Jennifer. For Jennifer, growing the Enterprise Holdings’ United Way campaign is an important personal quest. “I don’t just organize the campaign, I believe in it and I’m passionate about employees participating and giving back,” said Jennifer. “I feel strongly about donating my own personal money knowing it is giving back to our own communities and economies. If your passion lies in education, healthcare or financial stability, United Way has its hand in all of those opportunities to give back.”

A southern California transplant to Las Vegas, Carolyn Wheeler came to the Valley in 1997 to work for R & R Partners. She is focused on being a role model for her daughter who is 10 years old.
“I am a firm believer in walking the talk,” said Carolyn. “As a mother, it’s important to lead by example not only by working hard and by helping people, but by doing simple everyday things like eating right and exercising, because I want my daughter to do those things.”
With a Bachelor’s degree in sociology with an emphasis in psychology from UCLA, Carolyn still takes her daughter to Bruins games and also enjoys exercising and running, cooking, reading and traveling.
Carolyn enjoys the vibe of downtown and says her favorite restaurant is Le Thai and if she could choose one all-time movie classic, it would be The Graduate.
Growing up, Carolyn was raised by her single mother, who reinforced that even though they struggled they had something to give, especially their time and talents. And Carolyn is passing that message down to her daughter.
After leaving R & R Partners, Carolyn went the corporate angle. After having her daughter she transitioned to the non-profit arena and worked for Communities in Schools (CIS) and Junior Achievement (JA). She now uses all the experience that she gained from her different roles in marketing and non-profit communications as the Manager of Employee & Client Communications at Citibank.
“When I worked at JA and CIS, the support that we received from United Way of Southern Nevada helped us to execute our mission to help kids get food and clothing and learn how to balance their budget and connect learning to earning so they stay in school,” said Carolyn.
Through her position as the Employee Campaign Coordinator at Citibank, she found her passion in communicating United Way’s impact with employees.
“I translate how their support strengthens our community and how it affects the lives of families and friends living in our community,” said Carolyn. “Supporting United Way is a great way to leverage your time and resources to make the most impact that you can for our community.”
She believes in United Way’s work so much that she signed up to become a Women’s Leadership Council member two years ago.
“I Live United by working with others to motivate and inspire them to make a difference in our community,” said Carolyn.
