    A UNIVERSITY of Western

    Sydney research team is

    determined to help people

achieve their dying wish.Theteamis conducting an

    extensive study of the re-

    s o ur c es a n d s u pp o rt

    systems needed to allow

more people to die at homesurrounded by friends and

    family.

    The three-year research

    program is funded by the

    federal government in part-

nership with Cancer Coun-cil NSW, and will involve

    focus groups across NSW

    and the ACT.

UWS associate professorand the projectschief inves-

    tigator Debbie Horsfall said

    the research would improve

    services and networks to

assist the terminally ill andtheir carers.

    We are interested in

    looking at how people come

    together to support people

to die at home, she said.We want to hear what

works and we are not com-

    ing from a negative perspec-tive.

    We are coming from a

    positive perspective, be-

    cause most people do want

to die at home.Research assistant Niki

Read said the aim of the

project was to talk to peoplewho have cared or are car-

ing for s omeone who is

dying at home, to find out

    what does and does not

    work.We want to capture what

    works and share it with

others, she said. When there are net-

works in place, one or two

    people dont have to carry

    t h e w h ol e t h in g t h em -

    selves.She said people with ex-

    perience in caring for the

terminally ill were welcometogetin touch toshare their

    experience.
